My 24 Favorite Outfits of 2024

December 24, 2024

Whew! Yesterday’s blog post with my Most Regrettable Purchases of 2024 was a tough one to write. But it does sound like it resonated with many of my readers, so I guess that was some redemption. Ha! Today I’m happy to turn to happier thoughts. I’ve looked through all of my photos from the past year and pulled forward my 24 favorite outfits of 2024. Fun!

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

At this time of year I like to evaluate my wardrobe and outfits from the previous 12 months. I find this exercise helpful in defining my personal style, building a wardrobe that makes it easy to put together outfits and creating looks that really resonate with me. All in all, I’m feeling pretty good about 2024. I definitely could point out outfits I wasn’t all that happy with in retrospect, but I’m happy to say that even after pulling forward my 24 favorites, I could have listed even more. That makes me feel like I’m finally nailing down my personal style.

I’m only sharing outfits that I wore for a full day “in real life.” Occasionally I create outfits for blog posts that I never actually end up wearing, although that is happening less frequently as I’m intentionally only showing things that I really would wear. In the captions of the photo, I’m linking you back to the original blog post so you can learn more, if you’d like, and you can shop available items. Let’s get started!

Veronica Beard Miller Dickey Blazer + Graphic Tee + Jeans

I didn’t have my assistant put these in any particular order because it would be grueling for me to have to rank 24 outfits in order of preference. But I can tell you that we are starting and finishing with my two absolute favorites. This combination of my Veronica Beard Miller dickey jacket with a graphic tee and full length, wide leg jeans is quintessentially my style. The jacket is my number one favorite item in my wardrobe, and this is my preferred way to wear it.

Styling the Veronica Beard Miller dickey jacket

This year in our Define Your Style…Refine Your Wardrobe style series, I decided that my three style angles are Elevated, Effortless and Classic. I think this outfit embodies all three perfectly. I could absolutely wear this outfit every day for a month and not grow tired of it. Do you have a go-to uniform that you feel like a million bucks in? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Trench Coat with Low Contrast White Jeans Outfit

I love wearing a trench coat. Again, that wardrobe basic really works for my defined personal style. So I’m always playing around with ways to style it. I think this combination of white jeans and an oatmeal colored cotton sweater works beautifully with it.

Spring Wardrobe Essential: Neutral Tote

I learned several years ago that keeping the contrast in intensity within my outfit low works best for me. I have low contrast in the intensity of my light green eyes, pale skin and silver/blonde hair. So wearing outfits that reflect that same contrast level produces great results for me. Do you know your contrast in intensity in your physical features? Learn more about this concept in this YouTube video.

Frank & Eileen Everyday Casual

Having worked with Frank & Eileen several times now, I have a number of their travel sets. But this “set” below is not actually even considered a set on their website. I happened to get these pieces separately and I just put them together this way. I love the comfort and class of this cheerful gal-about-town look.

It's Time to Lighten Up for Spring
Belfast English Peacoat in white triple fleece // Bella Italian Sweatpant in white triple fleece // Joedy Boyfriend Button-Up Shirt in wide white and blue stripe is out of stock // see original blog post here

Probably my favorite thing at Frank & Eileen, however, is their button-up shirts. My Joedy striped shirt is out of stock, and they don’t even list the Joedy anymore. But I do have several Eileen shirts that I also love, and you’ll see at least one further down our list.

Everlane Linen Trousers with a Denim Jacket

I love infusing juxtaposition into my outfits. That’s one surefire way to keep my looks a little “effortless,” which is one of my style angles. So I knew this outfit with my Everlane linen trousers and my Levi’s denim jacket had to make my list.

2 Ways to Wear Black Linen Pants this Spring and Summer
Levi’s denim jacket // white tee unavailable // linen pants // cognac belt // sandals // Veronica Beard Goody Bag // see original blog post here

That said, I think what really pulls this outfit together for me is the use of all of my cognac accessories. I learned just this year that, while you could accessorize this outfit with black sandals and bag and belt, the cognac accessories bring interest, richness and elevation to a black and white combo. Wouldn’t you agree?

Liberty Print Shirt + Jeans + Cognac Accessories

Here’s another outfit where the cognac accessories play a key role. I absolutely adore this Liberty Print Frank & Eileen shirt. And while I also wore it with linen pants, I think it looks best with blue denim.

Lessons from a Favorite Outfit
exact top and jeans are sold out // sandals // belt // shoulder bag // necklace is sold out  // bracelet // earrings // see original blog post here & here

But those cognac accessories really pull this simple combination together so nicely. I know that partial tuck is often a topic of great contention. Let’s please don’t go that direction in the comments today. These are my favorites; they don’t have to be yours. But I have to confess, that half tuck is another reason my eyes were immediately drawn to this outfit when I was looking for my favorites. It just resonates with my personal style, especially when I’m putting together truly casual outfits for an ordinary day.

Red Linen Pants + Plaid Linen Shirt

Yeah, I utilized my cognac accessories a lot this summer. They just made getting dressed so easy. Here I’m wearing them with some favorite Frank & Eileen linen trousers and linen shirt.

Linen Pants

There’s a lot of color in that outfit, especially for my taste. So I feel like the cognac and straw accessories help tone it down to a manageable level for me. Plus, let me pause to say that this and every other outfit I’m sharing in my top 24 is extremely comfortable. While I don’t consider “comfortable” to be a good style angle word because it refers to functionality, not style, I do want my clothes to feel comfortable. If you want to know more about why I don’t think “comfortable” is a good style word and what to choose instead, see this video.

Learn how to define your style HERE.

Liberty of London Print Shirt + White Linen Pants

I love wearing linen in the summer. It’s just my favorite thing. In fact, every time we read in the Bible about how we (the church) will be clothed in fine linen in heaven, I get very excited. No joke. (see Revelation 19:7-9 for one such reference.) Can you imagine what that fine linen will feel and look like? Ahh, but I digress…

Linen from Frank and eileen
wide-leg linen pants // cotton shirt is no longer available // Clarks sandals // necklace & earrings (c/o) (Use code KAY20 for 20% off at Penelope) // see original blog post here

I’m pretty sure heavenly linen is probably much more beautiful and softer that even my Frank & Eileen wide-leg linen pants, but I sure did enjoy these this summer. And of course one of my favorite ways to wear them was with this Liberty of London print shirt. I also liked the way those Clark sandals finished off the look. Talk about comfortable!

Ivory Jeans + Silk Print Shirt

Here’s another great example of a low contrast in intensity outfit. Even though this combination has a lot of color in it, the colors are framed by an ivory background, so the combination with the off-white jeans works beautifully for me.

White Jeans 2 Ways
Alice + Olivia silk print blouse is no longer available // 90’s straight crop jeans in Tile White (currently on sale! 45% off right now) // earrings (c/o) // herringbone chain (c/o) // pebble pendant necklace (c/o) // similar belt // sandals // handbag // see original blog post here

And again, I wore those cognac accessories to pull the look together. I don’t know if cognac accessories will be as “in vogue” in 2025 as they were this year, but I’ll be wearing them. It’s a classic color really, so I’ll proceed until something else strikes my fancy.

Khaki Linen Skirt & White Linen Shirt

Yep, here’s more cognac. And it perfectly pulls together this combination of khaki colored and white linen in this skirt and shirt outfit. These full skirts were so on trend this summer. I do hope that trend continues, but we’ll see. I’ll be wearing this classic skirt again regardless.

A-Line Skirts
stretch-linen skirt is no longer available // linen shirt // belt // sandals // necklace is sold out // earrings // bracelet // shoulder bag // see original blog post here

The only thing I don’t like about the outfit above is that I was wear body makeup that day. I’d been experimenting with it and didn’t have time to remove it before my photo session. But I decided it’s not for me. If I had skin issues or colorful veins I wanted to conceal, I might feel differently. And trust me, my legs are not all that pretty anymore. But I’ll just go au naturale all the same.

Off-White Faux Wrap Dress

In yesterday’s blog post about my most regrettable purchases, I listed a beautiful J.Crew white shirt dress. Like I said there, the only problem with that purchase is that it was immediately followed by the purchase of this off-white faux wrap dress from Athropologie. I ended up wearing this one frequently and never really opted for the other, even though it’s still in my closet (and I’ll try it again this summer).

Colette wrap midi dress

I remember the day we took this photo. I’d been to the mall in this outfit, and I’d gotten one compliment after another. This simple but chic combination just really presents well. It came with a same-fabric belt, but I preferred it with this cognac one. No surprise there!

Monochromatic Purple

Actually I think the name of the color of these pants is wild orchid, and I do like that better than purple. Ha! But oh how I loved wearing this striking combination. The pants are J.Jill and the top is J.McLaughlin, but once they’d met up in my closet I don’t think I ever wore one without the other.

Styling Wild Orchid Two Ways with J.Jill
Easy Linen Wide-Leg Crops in wild orchid (runs large; wearing medium but roomy) // see original blog post here

Here I did wear my gold metallic sandals rather than the cognac and I think that was a good choice. I used to wear metallic sandals almost daily in the summer, but I reached for them less this year. But I do love gold with purple…or wild orchid. My gold Julie Vos jewelry also made this combination look a little richer.

Blue Silk Shirt + White Linen Pants

I absolutely fell in love with these silk shirts that I found from Tommy Bahama. It looks to me like they may actually carry these yearly in different colors, but we’ll have to wait until this spring to know for sure. They were not inexpensive, but they sure did earn their keep in my closet. I wore the salmon colored one or this blue one almost weekly in a variety of outfits. But this combination is one of my favorites.

with linen pants
Tommy Bahama Talullah silk camp shirt is currently out of stock // white linen pants // coin necklace // chain link necklace // hoop earrings // belt // see the original blog post here

You just can’t beat the crisp, summery vibes of this white linen pants and blue silk shirt combination. Again, I completed the look with my straw bag, a cognac belt and those gold metallic sandals.

Blue Silk Shirt + Off White Jeans

Here’s another outfit combining two of the favorite pieces I’ve already shared above: that blue silk Tommy Bahama shirt and my off white jeans from Madewell. But what I really love about this outfit is the accessories.

with jeans
Tommy Bahama Talullah silk camp shirt is out of stock // Madewell tile white straight crop jeans // shoulder bag out of stock from Spartina449 // Me+Em pearl detail Nappa sandals (60% off right now) // mini pebble necklace // herringbone chain necklace // earrings // bracelet // see original blog post here

Yes, I diverged from my cognac theme and wore my ivory sandals from Me+Em with my embroidered fabric bag from Spartina449. What this favorite outfit teaches me is that every wardrobe does need a few “special items.” I’m trying to learn how to strike the preferred balance between classics and special pieces in my wardrobe. I don’t want everything to be unique or “extra,” but I also don’t want everything to be plain Jane. Know how I mean?

Casual Tonal Look for Everyday

I always have to scramble a little to put together outfits I enjoy during those transitional weeks between seasons. What about you? So in my effort to create a little transition-into-fall style inspiration, I purchased these comfortable, but classy separates from Everlane. And I fell in love with this look.

Transition Into Fall with Casual Cotton Pants
pants (TTS; wearing L) // ribbed tee (TTS; wearing L) // blazer (TTS; wearing L) // sandals // similar tote // earrings // link necklace // coin necklace // bracelet // see original blog post here

I have a penchant for black and dark grey to begin with. So I really like the way these two relaxed, “effortless” pieces play against each other to create a very chic look that is also quite casual. I finished the outfit with comfortable Naot sandals and minimal jewelry from Gorjana.

Eileen Fisher Travel Outfit

Eileen Fisher didn’t necessarily market these sort of rough-and-tumble separates as a travel outfit, but that’s what I immediately thought when I saw them. Sure enough, I loved wearing this combination on our trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York in the fall.

Reed coordinates
stand collar jacket // cargo pants // French terry top // Away Overnight Bag // sandals // necklace // earrings // bracelet // see original blog post here

I love the tonal look with a soft pop of white. Again, I completed the effortless combination with comfortable Naot sandals.

Black Linen “Suit”

These black linen Frank & Eileen separates are not really a suit, of course. But I sure did feel smart styling them as one on this particular Sunday…and several times later. I absolutely love blazers, so having a soft, casual linen blazer or two in my wardrobe makes me really happy.

Wear Now & Later Linen Separates
Dublin linen blazer // Wexford wide-leg linen pants are unavailable // sleeveless linen seersucker shirt is no longer available // cognac sandals // belt//saddle bag (Use code KAY10 for 10% off at Patricia Nash Designs) //necklace (c/o) // bracelet (c/o) // earrings (c/o) // see original blog post here

See how those cognac accessories make this black and white combination sing? Black would be okay, but just okay. Cognac makes the whole outfit look richer and more interesting.

Black Linen “Suit” with Graphic Tee

You may recognize this graphic tee. It was part of the very first outfit, which I also said was one of my two favorite. I got this tee last January from Me+Em, and I knew I’d purchased a winner the minute I added it to my cart. They sold out fairly quickly thereafter.

Black Linen Separates with a Graphic Tee
Dublin linen blazer // Wexford wide-leg linen pants are unavailable // sneakers // belt // saddle bag (Use code KAY10 for 10% off at Patricia Nash Designs // see original blog post here

But that little t-shirt has made so many outfits better. I love the ribbed fabric for a really sweet fit. And the simple black printed address on the front is just enough to add interest without being a distraction. I get so many compliments on it and questions about it, and I hate that I haven’t been able to link it. But that didn’t keep me from wearing it over and over…because it’s just that good. I’m keeping my eyes open for something similar so I can share the fun with you all, too.

Ivory Fair Isle Sweater with Grey Jeans

Ooh! Some new accessories. Ha! Indeed, I love the sweater and jeans combo here, but I also really dig these Brighton accessories. I chose them carefully when presented with a collaboration by Brighton, and I’ve absolutely loved wearing them.

Accessories from Brighton
sweater // jeans // belt // Sloane loafer  // Georgina organizer // see original blog post here

Here I think this outfit really resonates with me on several different levels. I love the combination of accessories, the jeans and sweater combo, but I also think the ivory socks make this outfit modern and fun.

Classic Fall Outfit

This outfit is from another collaboration, this time with Nordstrom. Nothing here was gifted, but I did carefully select items from Nordstrom that I felt my readers would also appreciate. I think I wasn’t quite prepared for how much I personally would like this outfit. It’s turned into a favorite that I’ve worn frequently all fall.

Chic Fall Outfit for a Cold Day
wool blend coat // jeans // cashmere turtleneck sweater // similar ankle boots // adjustable pendant necklace // earrings // belt // see original blog post here

I just think that’s such a classic fall look. And it really resonates with my personal style and my lifestyle.

Veronica Beard Suit Separates

As much as I love Veronica Beard, not everything in their line feels right for me. And it certainly takes a toll on my wallet when I shop there. Ha! But I couldn’t resist these coordinating separates for fall. I love the drape of these pants and the length of this jacket. So modern!

Netta Pant in Russet Heather
Nalani dickey jacket (TTS; wearing 10) // Netta pants (TTS; wearing 10) //  insertable cashmere dickey  //  similar tank top // loafers// bucket bag //  earrings (c/o) (use code KAY20 for 20% off) //  necklace(c/o) (use code KAY20 for 20% off) // see original blog post here

I wore this outfit to church one morning and felt really comfortable in our very casual gathering. But this look is also elevated and polished. Everything here is comfortable and feels authentic to my style. Really, when push comes to shove, that’s my criteria for a great outfit: it just has to feel authentic to me and also look a little stylish and modern.

Layered Barn Coat & Jeans

These last two outfits are ones I wore on our trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. The days were glorious and my outfits felt perfect for our outings.

Classic Barn Jacket is On Trend
Adirondack Barn Coat is no longer available // Scotch plaid relaxed flannel shirt (TTS; wearing regular medium in Antique Dress Stewart) // jeans (TTS; wearing a regular 10) // turtleneck (sized up to a large) // see original blog post here

Barn coats have been trending this fall, and I jumped in with both feet. I’d been eyeing this Adirondack barn coat from L.L.Bean for years actually, so this felt like the right time to get it. I loved creating and wearing this outfit with the jacket layered over a thin turtleneck and colorful flannel shirt. Those L.L.Bean jeans are great, too, by the way.

Hannah’s Birthday Party Outfit #1

I can’t help but think of this simple combination as Hannah’s Birthday Party Outfit #1. Ha! I knew the minute I tried it on that I’d be wearing this soft pink funnel neck top with these bedazzle ankle jeans for my granddaughter’s 1st birthday party.

Add Color and Sparkle to Your Outfits Now with Talbots
funnel neck top (c/o) TTS // jeans TTS // see original blog post here

Indeed I did, and I felt festive and pretty and happy in it. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that what you wear doesn’t matter. It may not matter to anyone else, but it certainly affects the intangibles like your attitude, your energy level, your confidence and your sociability.

Hannah’s Birthday Party Outfit #2

I also planned way in advance to wear this metallic bow sweater with those same bedazzled jeans for Hannah’s second party. This casual, more laid back party was for just our family, but I still wanted to look and feel festive.

Add Color and Sparkle to Your Outfits Now with Talbots

And yet, it was all comfortable, too. You don’t ever need to sacrifice comfort for style, but you may have to work at it!

Suede Jacket + Jeans + Booties

And like I said, these 24 favorite outfits were in no particular order. I guess really they’re probably in the order I wore them. With the exception of this one outfit. Indeed, this suede jacket and jeans outfit, along with the first blazer and jeans outfit shown, is one of my two favorite outfits of the year.

Suede Blazer
Duane suede jacket // L.L.Bean slim leg jeans // lightweight turtleneck // suede bucket bag // see original blog post here

I didn’t get to wear that suede jacket nearly as much as I wanted to this fall. But it will be in my closet for many years to come, so I’m not worried. I’ll enjoy it over and over. And more than likely this outfit is pretty representative of how I’ll be wearing it every time. Yeah, this is me.

Suede Blazer

Thanks so much for stopping in today. I’ll be doing a few more of these year in review posts over the next couple of weeks and then we’ll get started on a winter style series, Styling the Winter Classics. Blessed for My Day

Have you received any good news lately? Maybe you discovered you have a new grandbaby on the way. Or maybe you won something! Or perhaps someone you were praying for got the answer they had hoped to receive. When you receive really good news, what do you do next?

Most of us do something after hearing good news. It may be as little as a smile or as extravagant as a jig. Ha! And I’d bet many of us have told others about our good news. We want to smile, laugh, weep with joy, hug someone, skip around the room or run out and tell others. And that’s exactly the response the good news of Jesus’ birth should still bring forth even 2,000 years later. How will you express your joy this Christmas Eve?

“for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army of angels praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among people with whom He is pleased.” ~ Luke 2:11-14

  1. This was great! You looked fantastic in all of your outfits! You are beautiful inside and out! Enjoy your Christmas and celebrating the true reason for the season..Happy Birthday Jesus. Thank you for all that you do and for helping us get dressed for our day. I have learned so much and continue to learn something new everyday. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

  2. Your misses post was fun. Your hits post was spot on. Your style, especially when you wear blazers, skirts, the linen dresses….. All hits!
I love your style and would wear all the these outfits.
Happy holidays to you and all your readers!

  3. Todays blog was nice seeing what worked for you but I think for me yesterdays blog was more helpful. Those clothes that didn’t work for you were lovely but for some reason you never chose to wear them. I have those clothes in my closet. The blog helped me think through what to donate so someone else could use them. Thank you.

  4. So many nice outfits. I love the wide leg jeans outfit. I feel real stylish when I wear my JCrew factory trouser jeans in both black and dark wash. I love linen in the summer too. You inspired me to wear cognac accessories. The beige linen dress inspired me to buy a similar style from Quince. I bought a rich brown color but now I wish I had bought the beige one. What can I say you’re an inspiration not only in fashion but as a woman of faith. 🙏

  5. Hi Kay. Thank you for this wonderful post. After reading and thinking about all the outfits you posted, I agree with you about the last outfit. I love the Duane jacket, turtleneck, and LLBean jeans with your chosen accessories. Thank you for the beautiful message of hope. Merry Christmas! Love, Linda

  6. Kay all your outfits are winners! You look lovely in all of them. I appreciate all the hard work you do bringing style inspiration and knowledge to us older ladies(and younger ones too). I feel like my own style is better because of you and the lessons I’ve learned. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family. I hope it’s a joyful and restful time for you. I look forward to what your blog has in store in the new year!

  7. Merry Christmas James and Kay!
    I can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve either!
I really liked several of the outfits but my favorites were the Frank &Eileen shirt and jeans, Alice & Olivia blouse and white cop jeans, both of Hannah’s birthday party outfits and the suede jacket, jeans and booties.
I am curious about the soup you have every Christmas Eve, would you care to share what it is and maybe the recipe?
Thanks for all of your time and work you put in on your blog, it’s really a blessing to me!
    Have a wonderful Christmas!

    1. The soup is called a 7 Can Soup and it’s just three cans of Progresso Minestrone soup, two cans of Ranch Style Beans, two cans of Rotel tomatoes (I use mild because I’m a wimp) and two pound of ground beef, browned and drained. We like it with a little cheese on top and corn muffins. 🥰

      1. I made the soup this evening, it’s very good — my husband loved it 😊
        So easy to make too!
        Thank you for the recipe!

  8. Hi Kay,
I really liked your outfits which do look good on you.
I was thinking when you asked about a favorite I reach for a lot. That would have to be the fall outfit I liked to wear. It is a light long sleeve chambray shirt over a cream sleeveless shell front tucked into a Med. wash high waisted long straight leg NYDJ with a braided cognac belt. (sometimes I swapped out the jeans for the same style of long beige slacks) the pants are long enough to meet at the top of my cognac Mary Jane leather shoes.Tied at the neck of the shell I wear my favorite navy/gray/brown-congac/cream print silk 27″ square scarf. If weather calls for cooling, I wear over all a Hound’s tooth check of navy/teal/cream blazer–my first purchase from Talbots on sale! I have a tote I bought lately from Quince that called it cognac color, but more like a dark dark gold, but it works (??).
I have been inspired by how you style your outfits and I feel more confident to just “go for it.” It’s fun to try out new items with older things at times when dressing for lunch with lady friends from church or very old friends that I meet up with occasionally.
Thank you so much and have an enjoyable Christmas and New years.

  9. Thank you for so many great ideas this past year. I found your videos by accident at the beginning of 2024 and later became a subscriber. I had retired and then decided to return to college and was really struggling with how to look sharp and pulled together on campus without trying to look twenty! I have had so much fun weeding through my closet, giving away things that no longer fit my lifestyle and adding classic, but modern, basics that work together. It has been a joyful experience and I’m so grateful!

  10. Hi Kay,
Thank you for blessing my day! I appreciate your work. Can you please suggest a brand that runs log? I need 2 more inches on everything!
    Thank you,
    Kathy

    1. Hi Kathy, most premium denim runs very long in their full length jeans. Also the pricier brands, such as Vince, Me+Em and Veronica Beard all run long. I always have to have those hemmed up and I’m 5’8″. Unfortunately most of the more moderately priced brands runs shorter. I think that’s where they scrimp on fabric a bit to save money in production.
