Chic Fall Outfit for a Cold Day

I had planned to take photos yesterday morning of a fall outfit, but the weather turned much colder than I had anticipated. So I ended up creating a chic fall outfit for a cold day. As much as we love layering on the style, it gets a little trickier when the temperature gets even colder. So let’s see how I created this iconic fall style that also kept me warm.

I did indeed wear this jeans and sweater outfit for some morning errands, too. I had to drive James to a dental visit for which he needed a mild sedative. So I spent the morning at the mall making a few returns and doing a little “blog research.” This outfit felt perfect for my morning out on this crisp autumn day.

Keeping it simple

I’ve discovered that the key to the most chic outfits is to keep it simple. More often than not, I tend to complicate things…in life and in outfits! But when I keep the colors and the combinations simple and lean, I’m much happier with the end product.

Start with the Sweater

I started this outfit with the sweater I wanted to wear. I chose a Nordstrom brand cashmere turtleneck sweater. It’s oh so soft, and I love the beige background and the navy stripe. Really, it reads more like a taupe than a beige to me. So classy! The sweater fits true to size for a slightly oversized fit; I’m wearing a medium.

great jeans

I like to keep the contrast in intensity low in my outfits because there is little contrast in the intensity of my physical attributes – my light green eyes, light skin and silver, blond hair. I’ve simply found that matching the contrast in intensity in my outfits to the contrast in intensity in my physical appearance helps to create the best looks. So I chose a pair of light to mid wash straight leg jeans, also from Nordstrom’s house brand. These modern silhouette jeans do not have a lot of stretch, so I sized up to a 31.

Then I completed the base layer with light to mid intensity beige suede booties. Mine are from last year and they were a top seller at DFMD last winter. They’re from Dolce Vita and they have a similar pair this year, although those look just a tad lighter.

And I finished this simple fall outfit with a beautiful navy double-faced wool blend coat. This Rails coat features a single button and is oversized intentionally (I’m wearing a medium). It’s a lovely coat for a cold fall day because it’s not lined. So I actually wore this coat comfortably in the mall, too. It looks very luxurious and sophisticated, but still felt warm, cozy and comfortable. I love how the navy coat creates a column effect over my otherwise low contrast base layers.

Everything I wore in this outfit, including my jewelry, lipstick (in Pink Bow) and belt, is from Nordstrom. I love shopping Nordstrom because they offer FREE shipping and returns all the time, they have great customer service and they offer a wide variety of styles and price points. Definitely take advantage of their rewards program by signing up for the Nordy Club if you haven’t already.

I’m linking to everything I’m wearing here as well as other personal favorites at Nordstrom below. Many of these items (not the ones I wore here, unfortunately) are included in their current Fall Sale.

Blessed for My Day

There are those who believe in God, but they do not obey Him. It’s a choice, you know. And sometimes those folks wonder why God doesn’t provide them more wisdom, more answers to life’s mysteries, more help in difficult times. I’ve even noticed that people who believe in God but don’t really honor Him are also the ones who often get angry with Him.

But the Bible makes it clear that we reap what we sow. And that includes what we gain from our relationship with God. If we fear Him and seek to honor Him, He will be intimately involved in our lives. And if we seek to know Him better by actually following the instructions we already know from Him, then He will provide for us even more insight and discernment. The Lord guides and protects those who truly demonstrate their love and respect for Him through obedience.

The secret of the Lord is for those who fear Him, And He will make them know His covenant. My eyes are continually toward the Lord, For He will rescue my feet from the net. ~ Psalm 25:14-15

  1. The turtleneck and the pendant are beautiful! I don’t usually order from Nordstrom but I need to see what they have!

    1. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The pendant has an adjustable slide, so you can really wear it with so many different necklines. I’m not wearing it at the longest by any means.

  2. I love your sweater. It looks so soft and sophisticated. Sadly, I cannot wear cashmere or any type of wool next to my skin, or I break out in an itchy rash. Can you find an alternative with that soft look in another fabric? Thanks!

  3. Such a cute outfit. You nailed it. I think a navy coat would be a great neutral to have. I tend to always think black.

  4. Kay, I absolutely love this outfit on you! I’m headed to a High School Football Game this weekend to watch my grandson and I think this would be perfect since the temp’s have fallen!! I especially loved your video yesterday and how you showed us how you style your hair. I might have missed it, but would you mind sharing what your cut is called? I’m headed to get my bob trimmed next week and I think I would love to duplicate your style. Thanks for all your inspiration!! You’re a blessing in many ways!

    1. I’m so glad you got a little inspiration from this look, Cathy, especially for a particular event. That’s great. My hairdresser calls this “a layered medium length bob with texture and lots of movement.” That’s straight from her text!

  5. Can you please provide the inseam measurement of the jeans you’re wearing? There’s nothing noted in the website description. Thank you!

    1. Yes, when I measure from the crotch, I get 27.5″. Without booties, they hit me at the ankle bone and look great with loafers, which is what I originally planned to wear for this outfit…but it was too cold that day!
