Tips for Wearing White This Spring

I love to start wearing more white during the spring. Tradition once held that we should reserve our white pants, dresses and jackets until after Memorial Day. But that rule is long gone and, trust me, there are no fashion police who will scold you if you break out the white now. I’m sharing a couple of easy breezy white outfits today from Frank & Eileen today that you’re going to love. But I also have tips for wearing white this spring and beyond.

Wear White Tip #1 – Go head to toe!

Let’s go bold with the very first tip. Yes, you can absolutely wear just white jeans or a white jacket. But why not jump on board with the current trend of monochromatic dressing. I’m all in myself.

It's Time to Lighten Up for Spring

I’m wearing Frank & Eileen’s Belfast English Peacoat (size large) paired with their Bella Italian Sweatpant (size large), both in their super comfy white triple fleece. You can actually get the similar but cropped length jacket, the Mini Belfast, paired with the Bella as a Milan travel set. I think that is super cool. And either the Belfast or Mini Belfast will also look great with jeans and chinos (like these linen Kinsales – my favs!) and even dresses or skirts.

Travel in White

And I did indeed travel to Georgia and back in this white Belfast English Peacoat and Bella Italian Sweatpant duo. More on how that went in a bit!

Wear White Tip #2 – Add your favorite spring colors to the mix.

This may sound obvious, but it’s important to remember that absolutely everything mixes well with white. So whether you are a winter, summer, fall or spring, you can wear white (or off white if you prefer) with the colors that suit your features and your fancy.

Wear Your Favorite Spring Color with White

I topped the white Bella Italian Sweatpants with a pretty Joedy Boyfriend Button-Up Shirt in wide white and blue stripe superfine cotton. It’s still cool outside, but this cheerful stripe has me thinking of pool days.

Frank & Eileen was actually founded in 2009 when former engineer Audrey McLoghlin sought to reinvent the button-up for women —a category previously focused solely on men. And let me tell you, she came up with a good one! They now have a number of varieties to choose from in button-ups, but my favorite is the Joedy. I also have it in this French blue and classic white.

The Joedy is a boyfriend button-up shirt designed for an oversized fit. It has an extra long hem to cover your bum. And all Frank & Eileen button-up shirts are designed with the top button right between the breasts for no gaping and pulling in this area.

Wear White Tip #3 – Don’t be afraid of keeping it clean!

I do hear some women say they never wear white because they fear getting it dirty. Trust me, I’m as messy as the next gal, if not more so. But I’ve discovered that I’m just as prone to get a bright yellow mustard stain on my dark wash denim as I am a coffee stain on my whites.

Frank & Eileen

As a matter of fact I did somehow end up with coffee on my white Belfast English Peacoat as we traveled to Georgia. (Interesting fact: I cannot for the life of me drink from disposable coffee cups with lids!) But Frank & Eileen makes their clothes for real life and real women, so the bulk of their products are machine washable. As soon as I got to my mom’s house, I put my Belfast English Peacoat in the washer (in cold water) and dryer, and the stains came out.

I’ve actually washed and dried both of these pieces twice before this photo shoot, and they look good as new. If you do spill coffee on these, other whites or anything else for that matter, immediately apply either salt (great for on the road!), baking soda, or clear, white vinegar to the stain. You could also use a stain stick, of course. Then, as soon as you’re able, clean your white garments according to the care instructions.

Wear White Tip #4 – Pair white with off white or ecru for a monochromatic look.

I absolutely love white worn with off white or ecru. Really any shade of beige will do! But my Wexford Wide Leg Linen Pants are perfect in this cement shade.

And I love the relaxed fit of the Wexford, too. It does fit true to size, but my 10 is just slightly roomy on me. Honestly, that’s how I prefer my clothes. But I advise you to use Frank & Eileen’s handy size charts and their customer reviews for the best sizing information.

Wear White Tip #5 – Add texture to your white outfits.

When you do go monochromatic, it’s wise to add a little variety in the textures throughout your outfit. This doesn’t have to be complicated and a little goes a long ways. But just wearing a white cotton tee, like my Theo Perfect Tee under the linen Eileen Relaxed Button-Up Shirt is enough contrast to keep this look interesting.

I now predict that the Eileen Relaxed Button-Up Shirt in white classic linen will be my most worn shirt of the summer. Hands down. My favorite outfit formula for summer is a linen button up shirt worn over a tee or tank. And I definitely wear the white one more than any others. Because this Eileen Relaxed Button-Up Shirt is the perfect length, features only the smallest chest pocket and has roomy sleeves, I know I’m going to love wearing it. I’m wearing a size medium in the Eileen and a large in the Theo Perfect Tee.

Wear White Tip #6 – Keep your shoes light and/or bright.

Honestly, there are myriad ways you can pair your shoes with white. But I prefer to keep mine light and/or bright.

Theo Perfect Tee

What shoes are light or bright? Light shoes would include my white sneakers or ivory loafers (no, they don’t need to exactly match your white garments). But light shoes could also be a pale pastel or other shade of beige or nude. Another type of “light shoes” would be strappy, airy sandals of most any kind. You simply don’t want your shoes to look visually heavy. Bright shoes would be metallics, which always look great with white.

Blessed for My Day

As we enjoy seeing the blossom growing around us, it’s a good time to examine what it growing in our lives as well. Whatever we feed will grow. So if we feed our feelings of isolation, regret, bitterness, jealousy or criticism, those things will grow in our lives. We feed those negative attitudes by ruminating on things past, conversing with others who have them growing in their lives and failing to weed them out.

But we can also cultivate more positive and beautiful attributes in our lives. The Bible tells us that God desires to grow a beautiful garden of love, joy, peace, patience and kindness in our lives. We can also grow goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Thankfully the Holy Spirit plants and causes these godly character traits to grow in us, but we have to cultivate good soil for them by feeding it. We can do that by spending time daily with the Lord, reading His Word thoughtfully and consistently and surrounding ourselves with others who demonstrate these traits. How does your garden grow?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. ~ Galatians 5:22-23

  1. I love white pants or jeans! I wear white or off white jeans in the Winter sometimes if the weather permits, but I prefer then now in the Spring and Summer. I like all your looks, except the half tuck in the front. It is just me, you go for it. For me it looks sloppy and weird. I don’t mind the front tuck completely and leave the back out, though my husband told me my shirt was untucked when I tried it and made a face when told him it was a trend. I have purchased some pieces last year from their sister company McLaughlin and they are good quality, though both are a little spendy. I just realized different spelling so maybe not same company. Sorry. I bought the Tory Burch loafers yesterday and can hardly wait to get them. Have a blessed day,

    1. Hi Sherry. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Always welcomed. I know you are going to enjoy those loafers!

  2. I can’t drink coffee with the lid either. I think I burned my lips one time. I have to remove the lid. I love a monochromatic look in neutrals. I’m one of those that don’t like to wear white because I will get it dirty. I will wear it if I know I won’t be eating or drinking other than water. Thanks for the tips on how to clean stains. Also for the styling tips. All the outfits look nice on you.

  3. I share your pain re the coffee cups. Lol. Your looks today are what I love for spring/summer too. I do have a question for you. In the past, you’ve said that J Jill is your fav linen. Can you compare Jill with F/E for me.

BFMD is so important these days. Thanks

    1. My JJill shirt is several years old and looking a little worn and dated. This one will make a nice replacement. They are similar but this one is roomier in the arms.

        1. Mine is about four years old and mostly it just looks and feels worn out. So I’m donating it. But I also noticed that it has a very slim lapel and smaller cuffs. No big deals really, but mostly it has just been worn out. It looks a little grey even.

  4. In the south we could wear white after Easter. We always got a new dress, hat and white shoes. Friends who grew up in the Midwest had to wait until after Memorial Day. It has been hard for me to break this fashion ‘rule.’Only 10 days until I can wear my white jeans!

  5. We should all avoid using disposable cups as much as possible, but it can be convenient when traveling. Here’s a tip – be sure the sip opening in the lid doesn’t line up with the seam on the cup. If it does, the lid won’t be able to get a good seal and it will invariably drip in your lap. I am in the “remove the lid” contingent, as I like to feel the warm steam and inhale the coffee scent. Not entirely possible if the car is moving! Such a dilemma.

    1. Thanks for the tip. Honestly I just don’t like drinking from them either. But in a pinch I’ll try to remember this tip.
