Fall & Winter Trend to Try: Suede

You know I’m a classic style girl at heart, but I do like to look current, too. That’s why most of the fashion trends I share here at Dressed for My Day really are just classics that are “having a moment,” as we say. So when I tell you that suede is so on trend for fall and winter 2024/2025, you know that this is one trending fabric you can invest in with confidence because you’ll be able to wear it for years and years. Let’s talk a bit about how you might incorporate suede into your wardrobe now and enjoy it for seasons to come.

I think one of the reasons suede is so on trend for fall and winter is because the English countryside look is a current hot theme. That aesthetic is comprised of those distinctly British components such as riding boots, tweed jackets, barn coats and hearty trousers. But fabrics such as wool, corduroy, cashmere, leather and suede definitely play a big role in that style aesthetic, too. Thus we’re seeing suede show up in a variety of offerings for fall and winter.

In fact, I’m seeing suede dresses, pants and skirts on so many retail websites. And yes, I’m seeing the real McCoy, but also a wide offering of faux suede, too. If this is a trend you’re interested in, but don’t want to spend the money that genuine suede sometimes lists for, you can certainly find beautiful faux suede selections to suit.

If you really want to invest in suede that will stand the test of time, I’d opt for outerwear or accessories. Coats, jackets, belts, shoes and bags in suede will hold their value and their wearability longer than garments like dresses, skirts, pants or shirts, that tend to change in silhouette more frequently and faster.

I chose to invest in a beautiful Veronica Beard suede dickey jacket this fall. I believe this classic single-breasted blazer in velvety suede will continue to earn its place in my wardrobe for many years, hopefully growing softer and more fitted to my body with every wear. Although, honestly, the first time I put it on it felt like an old friend.

This will be that jacket that I reach for over and over to wear with a favorite pair of jeans, a simple turtleneck, button-up shirt or cashmere sweater and a pair of leather booties. Here I’m wearing the Duane suede jacket with my L.L.Bean slim leg jeans and a lightweight turtleneck.

I did also carry my suede bucket bag that day. But otherwise I accessorized with brown leather boots and belt, both old an no longer available. Your outfits will always look more interesting and richer if you mix textures, so definitely pair your suede leather with full grain leather.

Blessed for My Day

Yesterday I attended my daughter and her husband’s church and heard a wonderful sermon from the book of Jude. The pastor shared that not only are we to contend for “the faith” with those who might try to teach a false gospel, but we also must contend for it within. In other words, we must constantly be vigilant about the ideologies we listen to, the opinions we entertain, the information we read and the company we keep because any or all of those things can lead us astray slowly and subtly.

Ultimately we are responsible for our own discipleship. Yes, the Holy Spirit changes us from within, molding us into the likeness of Christ, but only if we cooperate, guard our hearts and participate in the spiritual disciplines. That’s why daily Bible reading, prayer and taking in good biblical teaching is important. It trains us in righteousness and helps us contend for a strong and sure faith that endures.

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all time handed down to the saints. ~ Jude 3

  1. I worry about the suede getting damaged in foul weather or little sticky fingers although the look appeals to me.

  2. I love the suede look. I purchased a suede blazer from J McLaughlin that is really good quality but a much better price point. I love yours though. I do have 2 Veronica Beard dickey blazer that I purchased last year and love. Have a wonderful visit with family. Love the BFMD.

  3. I like the look of suede, but it’s a little bit to warm of a fabric to wear in FL where I live. I know you enjoyed the visit with your daughter. I’m also visiting my daughter in GA right now. I will continue on to TN on Sat. to spend 9 days with my BFF who just celebrated her 90th birthday. Safe travels home.

  4. Hi Kay!! You look great in a jacket and jeans. That should be your go-to outfit. I love the suede.
    Have a Great day!

  5. In my mild but rainy climate, I only wear my suede jacket on bright, sunny days. And from sad experience, I cannot recommend suede skirts, pants, or dresses. Not because of style trends, but because the nap on the suede forms “shadows” and the garments get “rump-sprung” after only a few wearing.

  6. I love suede! But living in a warm climate, I only have a few select items in it (genuine and faux), worn/used primarily in winter.

  7. I love the book of Jude. Definitely we must watch against false teachers. I’ve always liked suede. I may even have had a real suede jacket in the past when it wasn’t so expensive. Now I own real suede only in shoes and boots. I have a few pieces in faux suede that are classic. I intend to wear them if it ever gets cool or cold. We just got a cold front so we’re getting there The suede jacket you’re wearing is really beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration.

  8. My challenge for the holidays usually revolves around attire appropriate for holiday performing arts events (usually concerts but not always and I don’t think the type of performance generally has a major impact on choice of attire). I live in a major metropolitan area and our performing arts venues vary from local churches to nationally known venues. I usually opt for casual (nicer jeans with a pretty jacket and scarf) for church or small venues, but what about the larger ones? I see everything there. In addition, I also often. walk to these venues – often 2 miles or so each way. So comfortable shoes are important (but pretty enough to not look inappropriate when I arrive!). Thoughts? Thanks!
