Happy Friday! This week has been a bear for me. Ha! Have I mentioned that I sometimes bite off more than I can handle? Hehehe! Anyhow, I think it’s going to wrap up nicely and I’ll have a chance to breathe again this weekend. So I originally planned to share another How to Style…Denim post today for Fall Denim Week 2024 like the posts from Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. But this has been the hottest week of the summer in Ohio, and I just couldn’t get the photos taken. Fortunately I had already decided to wear denim all week in real life, too. 🙌 So today I’m sharing the denim outfits I really wore this week.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

How This Works

These are my real life outfits from my own closet. Many of these things are available, but some may not be. When I can locate one quickly I’ll share substitutes and/or more economical options. But if I don’t provide one and you’d like for me to, just ask. All available items are linked in the captions of the photos. Even if they don’t look like links (sometimes they don’t highlight for some reason), they generally are. So just click through if you’re interested.

What I Wore to Travel to Columbus Friday

Friday we road-tripped to Columbus to spend the weekend with our son and daughter-in-law. We had discovered a great Mexican restaurant in route when we drove through at Thanksgiving, so we planned to stop there and then take photos for Monday’s post afterwards. I wore my light wash Madewell wide leg crop jeans with a favorite Frank & Eileen button-up shirt (sold out). I love this combo; it feels very authentic to my style.

By the way, I wear a size 29 in these jeans. For reference, I’d say my true jean size is a 30. But on these I size down. On most premium denim I size UP to a 31. But I almost always size down to a 29 at Madewell. Yep. I could wear this outfit or a similar version of it every single day. I know that not everyone likes the partial tuck, but I love it. It defines where the waist is, but still allows for a little coverage. It’s just fun and casual. That night we went to a minor league baseball game and I changed into shorts and a tee, but I neglected to take a photo.

Saturday Morning

I think this is my only non-denim outfit. Saturday morning we were at the Worthington Farmers Market as it opened at 8 a.m. I knew it would be warm and I wanted to feel a little more breezy than denim would allow for.

My Everlane joggers with an old graphic tee from Madewell fit the bill. I wore my sneakers and they felt very comfortable, but I should have worn my Sheec socks under them. I packed them but couldn’t find them that morning as I dressed. By the way, Sheec socks, like everyone else, is having a great little Labor Day Weekend sale. So if you need some no-show socks that you can wear with everything from ballet flats to sneakers to loafers to booties that really do stay in place and feel good…check them out!

Saturday Night

Saturday was James’ birthday, so we celebrated that night by going out to a nice steakhouse. I wanted to look a little more elevated, festive, so I wore my tile white jeans from Madewell. By the way, they are on sale AND an extra 40% off with code LONGWEEKEND. I wear a size 29 in these, so size down.

I kept the look soft and tonal with my smoke pink sweater vest and ivory pearl kitten heel sandals.

Sunday

Sunday morning we had coffee and the best English Muffins in Ohio (that Stephanie purchased at the farmers market) with Daniel and Stephanie and then we drove into town to shoot the photos for Tuesday’s blog post. Afterwards we snapped this photo of what I really wore to church that morning.

These mid wash jeans are from Me+Em and I had forgotten how much I love them. I really haven’t worn jeans much during the summer, so it all feels so fresh and new for me now. I appreciate that these jeans are 99% cotton with just 1% elastane for just a hint of stretch. They feel very authentic. And I like the simplicity of the straight leg ankle silhouette. I bookended the jeans with an off white sweater tank and off white sneakers.

Monday’s Outfit

Monday was just a work from home day, but I got dressed for it. I actually wore the olive green short sleeve button-up and jeans with my leopard print ballet flats during the day. But when we stopped to pick up dinner after the photo shoot for Thursday’s blog post, I had the leopard print slingbacks on.

I just received the leopard print slingbacks earlier this week, and I’m so excited to have them for fall. They’re just like my nude suede slingbacks and my gold ones, so I knew they’d be comfortable. But I just think they are the perfect splash of leopard print for so many fall outfits. I’ll be wearing them a lot.

What I Wore Wednesday

Tuesday was just one of those days. I started out behind before I even got out of bed. And I got up early! But I spent the day at my desk editing Wednesday’s YouTube video, so I didn’t get dressed for my day. But Wednesday I pulled my act together and put on my raw hem wide leg jeans and a favorite linen shirt.

We went out to dinner, so I coordinated my handbag with my leather belt and sandals.

Thursday

Earlier in the week I got these J.Crew denim trouser jeans and all week I looked forward to wearing them on Thursday. I had a nail appointment, so that gave me an excuse to get out and dress up a bit. Since they are long on me (and remember, I’m 5’8″) I have to wear a substantial heel with them. It feels silly to wear a heel this high at home for me most days, but I love slipping into them when I go out and about.

I think the blouse has actually sold out. I purchased it in the spring. But let’s focus on those jeans. They are just a beautiful silhouette and so comfortable, too. I wear my true size 30 in these for a really nice fit. Best news of all? They are 40% off this weekend. The trouser jeans do come in petite and tall sizes, but I’m wearing the classic fit. I’m 5’8″ and wearing a 2 1/2″ heel. This is definitely my favorite of the denim outfits I wore this week.

Thanks so much for dropping in. I hope you have a great weekend. Let me know if you have any questions about my denim outfits (or the other one!).

Blessed for My Day

I received the kindest email yesterday from a new subscriber. Actually I receive similar gracious emails and DMs every day from so many women. It truly is humbling. But this email landed in my email inbox at just the right time. My head was swirling with other words that didn’t feel so kind and I was doubting myself mercilessly. I was really struggling.

Interestingly James and I had just been talking about how much kind words encourage us, propel us forward. We discussed the fact that instruction and criticism can certainly have their place, but rarely do they really motivate us the way kind and encouraging words do. When I received that particular email I truly felt a lift in my spirits. And once again I was motivated to press on. Who could you motivate through encouragement and kindness today?

Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up, just as you also are doing. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11

  1. Loved the J Crew flare jeans and the blouse you wore. I rarely wear jeans. But it’s nice to see so many types. If I wear jeans, I usually wear black.

  2. I sometimes wonder about the emotional toll on bloggers. People feel free to say anything without qualms because of the anonymity. Also, sometimes the person didn’t mean it in an unkind way, but it came across that way in print. Some people are just blunt and don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I don’t think I could handle it. God bless you, Kay! You are doing a great job. You are a ray of sunshine in this difficult life!

  3. Thanks for the tips on wearing modern jeans. I’m planning to buy wide leg full length pair this season and appreciate your help. As always, your kind and gentle spirit is welcome.

  4. Great post for a blue jean gal like me. I also love to see the blast from the past with the graphic tee, which I still have. Question on the Athletica belt bag. I purchased the green one after your post and like the red too. How do you keep it from unloosening when worn as a crossbody. Also, can you, or have you demonstrated the blouse partial tuck? Not sure how to style the rest of it.

    1. Hi Cyndi. I know what you mean about the belt loosening on belt bags, but this one just doesn’t. I’ve not had a problem, either wearing it as a belt or a sling. I do always wear it in front of me, never behind. So maybe that helps. Do you mean you’d like for me to demonstrate on video somewhere? Maybe on YT or Instagram or LTK? I can do that!

  5. What great outfits Kay! I am a jean girl and definitely miss wearing them myself. All this heat in Oklahoma is too hot for jeans.🥵. Can’t wait for the video tomorrow. Hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend!

  6. I look forward to your emails Kay, and they always lift my spirits! Both the BFMD and all your hard work and time you spend creating outfits and explaining why this works or doesn’t work is an ongoing education for me!! I truly appreciate all your and James’ hard work in keeping us fashionable!! Enjoy the long weekend and try not to pay attention to any unkind words…your following has grown so much since I started following you a couple years back, clearly your positive message is being heard. I also enjoy hearing in church some of the passages of scripture i picked last year for our Sunday sessions!

  7. You are an inspiration in many ways thru your fashion sense and the daily Christian messages. I love your Sunday post too. Please don’t take this as a negative – I can’t afford $300-400 for a pair of white tennis shoes. Are these high end tennies worth the cost? Is it just how they make you feel? Are there any brands that are more reasonable priced that you would recommend? I know you and other bloggers consistently wear very expensive clothing, jewelry, hand bags, and shoes that I could never justify. But I sure like looking! haha

  8. That’s a real nice picture of you in the white jeans and pink top. I like the JCrew trouser jeans too. Yesterday I ordered trouser jeans from JCrew factory. They’re a darker wash but look similar to the ones you’re wearing. The green blouse and jeans outfit with leopard accents is also so chic. I’m going to copy that look when it’s cool enough for jeans. Always love your devotional.

  9. Nice outfits! Favorite – your outfit for James’ birthday. Pink really suits you. The color combination in that outfit reminds me of the pink blazer outfit you had a while back, with the white slacks. It’s a winner for you, for sure. The half-tuck, I will never understand. Don’t care how many mannequins, bloggers, or ads I see it/on, it looks indecisive. Your personality to me comes across as a decisive, tucked-in-shirt, belted, polished kind of gal. Like the way you have your final three outfits styled. Anyhow, yes, kind words and encouragement can make a far bigger impact yielding positive results than criticism. But it is so much more common for people to tear down, even unintentionally. So thank you for your BFMD, a good reminder to us all.
