In the past I’ve not worn my linen into the fall. But this year I acquired a few pieces of black linen that I am definitely wearing into autumn until it’s too cool to do otherwise. I thought some of my readers might be considering the same move, so I’m sharing a few ways I’m styling these casual linen separates for now and later.

I recently ordered Frank & Eileen’s Wexford wide-leg linen pants and their Dublin linen blazer, both in black. I’m already enjoying wearing them for warm summer days, but I’m seeing great possibilities for wearing them into early fall. Both of these pieces run true to size using Frank & Eileen’s size guides, but the linen pants are a very roomy fit.

For a cool summer look I wore the Frank & Eileen linen separates with a sleeveless linen seersucker shirt from Eileen Fisher. I accessorized with my cognac sandals, belt and saddle bag. While the look above is distinctly summery to me, swapping in a white graphic tee gives this outfit more of a transitional vibe.

I can certainly wear this combination now, too. I think this is a smart look for travel. In fact, I may wear this outfit for our road trip to Georgia tomorrow. And it will work perfectly for me when we fly to Texas later in September. The stretch linen fabric used in these separates makes it softer and more wrinkle resistant than most linen. But even with soft folds and creases, these casual pants and blazer look smart and unique.

For yet another option, especially as we move into September, I can swap in a dark colored t-shirt, such as this green v-neck tee. I’m not sure I like this look as well as the first two, but that may simply be because my eyes have not adjusted to such dark tones for fall. I’m still in summer gear!

But if you’re looking for a more autumnal color combination, this is definitely it. Pardon the wrinkled tee. These things sometimes happen when you’re changing clothes in the car for a photo shoot!

What do you think? Do you like the dark green and black combination? It definitely has a low degree of contrast in intensity, which is generally my goal. And green is one of my best colors since my eyes are light green. I really think my eyes just used to seeing summery combinations, but I may be wrong.

This time, continuing with the more fall-like theme, I wore my Ursula ballet flats in leopard print. They’re super comfortable and I purchased them in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale when they were 25% off.

Does it bother you that you cannot understand the ways of God? Or does it fascinate and inspire you? Personally I am thrilled that our God cannot be put within a box. Our human minds cannot dissect His ways or comprehend His plans. We cannot wrap our brains around eternity, nor can we fathom heaven. He is a mystery to use.
If I could explain everything that God does or allows, then I would be His equal. But I do not need to be His contemporary if I also want to be His child. I may not be able to understand the ways of God, but I can get to know the heart of God. And I may not be able to predict His every move or comprehend what He has done. But I can trust Him all the more because He is beyond my scope of understanding.
Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! ~ Romans 11:33

Good morning and thank you Kay for transitioning us into Fall! I have a mid September conference to attend and these outfits give me ideas. I want to be comfortable as I sit in the conference all day but yet modern and elevated as you say! Have a great trip to Georgia!
I like the dark green with the black. I would like it even more with navy blue. I just like the color combination and I also like green. It’s my favorite color!
I was going to say exactly the same thing. I am a winter, so both navy and black are in my color palette, but I think the green and navy would be a more harmonious combination.
I do like the dark green and black on you and with the cognac accessories and leopard flats. I don’t think black leather would look as good.
I’m a little iffy on the dark green with the black. For myself, I might choose a rich burgundy or a deep purple. Thanks for the inspiration to keep the black linen front and center for early fall!
I like the green and black combination, especially with the cognac and leopard accessories. I love the fall colors, and would also like it with royal blue, burgundy or plum. Thanks for the fall ideas.
Loved all 3 outfits and thank you fir helping us to do the transition into Autumn . Kay the green V Neck looks lovely on you and so good with the leopard ballet flats . The green top would also look gorgeous with some soft green linen pants and your Cognac accessories it would look quite summery , me personally I would wear it with white jeans and cognac accessories too I know like you I’m low contrast colour but I think it would make that shade of green ‘Pop’ . Loved your Devotional God is a Wonderful Mystery ❤️
I saw that you are reading The Watchmaker’s Daughter. I have read it too. Another book about Corrie Ten Boom is called The Hiding Place. It was also made into a movie. The movie came out in the 70’s. I believe the book was also written in the 70’s. The Hiding Place is written more as a story than a textbook. I thought you might enjoy it too.
Thanks Wendy. Yes, I read that one years ago, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to read it again. I remember seeing the movie in middle school. So inspirational.
The dark green T under the blazer brings the outfit right into fall. Love reading your posts
Replying to Wendy about Watchmaker’s Dtr. I read The Hiding Place with my 5th grade daughter every night. Recommended by our pastor. I am so glad we shared that experience. Reminds us to be grateful for our freedoms and what hardships others have endured.
Love the look of green on you Kay
Thanks for sharing
Hi Kay. I have always thought black and green are a great combo and this outfit looks lovely on you. But I really like the graphic tee and sneakers as well. I like a camel colour with black as well – could that work with these pieces?
Yes! I think camel would be great here, especially with those leopard print flats. I don’t think I have anything camel for here though.
Responding to Jocelyn. I love camel and black. My mom was always a big fan of camel…….very classic.
Am I doing this the right way? I will get an email comments, then press reply. But am not sure comments are going back to the original commentator?
That jacket and pants are a great set of pieces to have! I like all the looks and am a fan of the green top – one of my favorite colors, so I’m partial to it.
This is a bit off topic, but a concern as I look for boots. How do you keep blue jeans from transferring dye onto suede, light taupe and an acorn color? I’m thinking it might also be an issue with suede on sneakers. Thank you
I’ve not had that problem, but I’ve heard that washing your jeans in a cold water wash with vinegar can help set the dye. Maybe others will chime in with ideas.
