I’m so excited to share that the classic barn jacket is having its moment in the sun! Yes, this fall (and hopefully into the spring) the sturdy, rugged jacket once reserved for mucking out the stalls and gathering eggs is trending on the fashion scene. Today I’m sharing one rather casual way I’ve styled the classic barn jacket for fall, but I’ll share another slightly more polished look next week.

Since the classic barn jacket is trending, you can expect to see it worn in a variety of ways. But today I’m sharing a very quintessential, casual look for fall with my Adirondack barn jacket. I kid you not, I have wanted this very jacket for years. But I kept talking myself out of it since, well, you know, I don’t have a barn…or farm. Ha!

So when I began to see similar barn jackets pop up in other brands’ catalogs and websites this fall, I ignored all of those and headed straight to this authentic barn coat of my dreams. I’ve got a shopping widget full of other barn jacket options for you below, but I love the authentic vibes of this one. It does come in dark khaki, too, but is almost sold out in that shade. And honestly, I much prefer the versatility that this loden color gives me in my wardrobe.

For a very classic, casual look I’ve worn the Adirondack barn jacket over a relaxed fit flannel shirt in antique dress Stewart plaid, also from L.L.Bean. And I’m also wearing my L.L.Bean high rise slim leg jeans. All three items fit true to size; I’m wearing a regular medium in the jacket and shirt, and a regular 10 in the jeans.

For a little added warmth on this brisk autumn day at the MacKenzie-Childs farm and store in Aurora, New York, I wore a close-fitting (but not tight at all) turtleneck underneath my flannel shirt. I’ve had that heathered meringue layering turtleneck in my wardrobe at least four years and wear it almost weekly during the colder months. Unfortunately that exact shade is about sold out, but they have several others that I love just as much, including the heathered tan. In fact, you get a discount if you purchase two, and that would definitely be a smart move.

On this day in Aurora, I was wearing the same jewelry I almost always wear when traveling, my Lagos pendant necklace (c/o), earrings (c/o) and bracelet (c/o).

Let’s get back to that barn jacket a minute. A few of the features I especially appreciate about this particular jacket include the plaid flannel lining in the torso, the brown corduroy lined cuffs and collar, the buttoned patch pockets along with the open vertical access pockets just above. The jacket also has princess seams and a back waist tab for shaping to give a more feminine appearance.

I’ve also elevated my barn jacket outfit just a bit with brown croc embossed penny loafers (more economical option) and a coordinating brown leather belt (similar). I chose brown in order to emphasize the brown trim on the barn jacket, but cognac or other shades of brown would have worked nicely here, too.

As promised, I have that shopping widget below with other barn jacket options, too. But I can highly recommend this authentic L.L.Bean Adirondack barn coat. Oh, and did I mention that the 100% cotton canvas outer shell is water repellant? Such a great jacket! Will you participate in this trend? I’d love to hear from you today.
PS – To shop my outfit, please use the links in the text and under the photos. They wouldn’t fit in the shopping widget below with all the other jackets.

Blessed for My Day
I’ve mentioned before that the Bible tells us over and over not to fear, not to be anxious. But God doesn’t call us to something He doesn’t also equip us for. We don’t have to just muster up the courage to somehow face the giants in front of us. Paul reminded young Timothy in his last letter that God gives us power, love and discipline to overcome our fears.
The Holy Spirit within us is the power of which Paul wrote. If you have accepted Christ as your Savior, you have the Holy Spirit within to empower you for anything you face. In First John 4:18 we’re reminded that perfect love casts out fear. When you are afraid or anxious, pause to reflect on God’s love for you. It is indeed perfect and thinking on it will dispel your fears. Finally, as we spend time in the Bible daily, we develop a disciplined mind. With a mind focused on truth rather than exaggeration or hearsay, you can clear away the taunts of anxiety.
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. ~ 2 Timothy 1:7

Love the barn jacket look! The quilted ones are my favorite!
Great! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this look, Kay. I have the classic barn jacket and two quilted ones. No trend here, I’ve been wearing a barn jacket ever since I’ve had a barn! I also worked in a male dominated field where durable work clothes were necessary. I have a rule of thumb I thought you might be interested in. Although I love the green, and sometimes that is my color choice, I make a point of choosing most of my menswear style items (coats, blazers and especially flannel shirts) in feminine colors – pinks, purple, lavender, teal, baby blue, etc. Yup, even gloves and tools (the guys don’t usually grab my pink ones). That way I always feel feminine in any situation, and for those who are not sure about these kinds of styles, it’s a good starting point, I love my pink flannel shirt just as much as my cashmere sweaters!
Sounds like a plan! Thanks so much for sharing. I love your angle!
Love the jackets. I think I like the quilted ones the most! I’m so glad that you and your husband had such a good time.
Lovely! Thanks for sharing. We did indeed. Thank you.
I too have wanted that barn coat for years, and now that it’s fashionable at last I’m going for it. Between your LLBean link, a credit balance on my Bean credit card, and some Bean Bucks to spend, well, today’s the day. It’s on the way!
Hahaha! I love it!
I used to love wearing barn jackets. When I was in college, I got called “LL Bean” for wearing my barn jacket on campus. Love that verse from 2 Tim. It’s one of my favorites.
