Besides the glorious appearance of tulips, daffodils, azaleas and dogwoods, my favorite thing about spring is completer pieces. Hahaha! But seriously, I do indeed love the jackets and sweaters we get to add to spring outfits while the temperatures remain a little unpredictable but the season evolves. So today I thought I’d round up my favorite completer pieces and remind us of all the lovely ways we can complete our spring outfits.

I know some of my readers live in climates where the temperatures are already quite warm consistently. But I do think I have some great completer piece ideas for everyone, especially if you’ll be spending time in an overly air-conditioned setting. Truth be told, spring outfit completers come in all sorts!
Blazers
Of course one of my favorite ways to complete an outfit during the spring is with the addition of a sharp blazer. You can’t go wrong adding a classic navy or black blazer to your wardrobe because you can wear it almost year-round, depending on your location.
You can wear a classic blazer casually with modern blue jeans. Or you can wear the same blazer with coordinating suit pants, as seen below.
And I also especially love a neutral or colorful blazer with white jeans…
or white trousers.
You can also complete a spring dress with a blazer. I haven’t done that in a while. I had to reach pretty far back into the archives for this example. I’ll have to try it again soon.
I suppose my favorite way to wear a blazer in the spring is with a simple t-shirt or tank. But obviously the options are almost endless.
Cardigans
A cardigan is another great spring topper. I’d try to select a more modern option, such as a grandfather or boyfriend cardigan, which is a slightly oversized sweater with a v-neck and buttons down the front.
But another modern option is the Lady Jacket, which is a cross between a sweater and a jacket. Generally they have bold and pretty buttons space far apart on the front, but mine features a zipper.
You can wear the above lady jacket and others like it alone or unbuttoned (or unzipped) with a top underneath. These completer pieces are generally fairly substantial, so beware the heat factor.
Denim Jackets
Another one of my personal favorites for spring is a denim jacket. I’ve been wearing my Levi’s denim jacket in the classic wash Sweet Jane for over 30 years. I love wearing it with skirts and dresses.
But a blue denim jacket also works nicely with white jeans…
…or chinos.
Recently I decided a wanted a couple of new and different denim jackets since I’ve worn my classic Levi’s jackets so long and so often. I ordered this raw cut slim denim jacket as well as this drapey denim shirt jacket (love!).
Trench Coat or Jacket
Of course I also love my trench coats. Whether yours is longer or shorter, you can easily elevate any outfit with the addition of one of these classic coats.
I do wear my trench coats with dress slacks and white jeans.
But classic trenches also look great with more casual blue denim and even sneakers.
If you’re seriously in the market for a great trench coat, I suggest you check out this recent blog post in which I linked to a wide variety of them.
Button-Up Shirt
Another personal favorite spring outfit completer piece is the simple button-up shirt. I generally wear these all through summer, too, so they’re great for warmer climes.
I especially love a classic, soft chambray or denim shirt to wear over tees and tanks. But you can also get really nice results with a plaid, striped or floral button-up shirt. Below I wore a really great striped shirt under a blazer and over a Henley tee.
And later I’ll switch to wearing mostly linen shirts over tanks and tees.
My favorite sources for linen button-up shirts include J.Jill, Frank & Eileen and Eileen Fisher.
Pullover Sweater
But don’t forget you can also wear a cotton (or even cashmere) pullover sweater as a spring completer piece, too.
You can wear the pullover sweater over your shoulders and tied, like I did above. Or you can wear it loosely over your shoulders. When you’re not wearing it, just fold it up and put it in your tote!
But you can also wear the pullover sweater over a t-shirt or tank and remove it when needed.
And you can wear simple knit tops draped over the shoulder the same way, as I did below.
Windbreakers, Anoraks and Other Sporty Jackets
For more sporty occasions, think windbreakers, Anoraks and such. Look for a pretty one that works with the colors in your wardrobe and fits your style aesthetic.
PRO TIP: Always purchase a tee or tank in the same color as every jacket you bring into your closet. Check out the effect above and below.
Mac Coat
Similar to a trench coat, but generally without the belt, a mac coat is another very chic spring completer piece.
Above you can see how I styled a mac for work or church. Below I styled a similar mac last year for an elevated spring getaway.
You could create a similar look with the coat that Talbots is carrying this year. After a trench coat, I’d say a mac is a great investment for the classic closet.
Utility Jacket
The safari style utility jacket is looking a little tired these days, but I’d definitely still wear mine.
But this year we’re seeing similar all purpose jackets in more trending silhouettes, like this bomber I recently purchased (more economical option). I also shared several nice utility style jackets in yesterday’s style board post.
Kimono
If you’re in a warmer climate, you may especially appreciate these lighter weight toppers. Mine is reversible and from Johnny Was. It’s silk and I’ll have it in my closet for years to come.
But you’ll find similar simple kimonos in cotton and linen, too.
Thanks so much for stopping in for a little style inspiration. Hopefully today’s spring completer piece round-up will generate a few ideas for outfits from your own closet and it may inspire you to purchase one or two new toppers as well. Remember, you can click through to the original blog posts through the links in the captions of each of the photos. While some of these are from previous years and items are probably no longer available, others are from recent posts and definitely available. Have a happy day!

Blessed for My Day
We can apply makeup, style our hair and put together a lovely outfit. But outward adornment will never take the place of inner beautification. I discovered years ago that I was born a sinner. Left to my own devices I’m very prone to say things that are unkind, to act selfishly, to grow defensive when misunderstood and to disregard what is best for the group in deference to what suits me the most. I’m slow to hear, fast to speak and quick to anger. And, unless I’m being led by the Spirit, I tend to share more information than I should, even gossiping and criticizing and grumbling.
But that’s not the woman I want to be. And I know that clothes and makeup will never disguise the ugly that shows up when I just do and say my own thing without discretion. If I want to be a truly gracious and graceful woman, I have to take every thought captive to Christ. And I have to submit to God daily so that He can tame my tongue and soften my heart and create in me a true concern and love for others. So today and every day I come to the Lord and confess my sins. Then I ask Him to create in me a new heart. That’s where true beauty begins.
As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout
So is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. ~ Proverbs 11:22
I love the posts, the outfit ideas however I believe I looked most forward to your Blessed for my day comments at the end. I am just beginning to teach a teenage girls class at church and the focus being on serving others, leadership and the influence we as women have. Thank you
I agree with Missy. Both posts are excellent, Kay. Thank you.
Hi Kay,
I recently bought 2 Veronica Beard blazers. I am normally a size 6, and I up sized to an 8. I love the tailoring of the blazer, but it fits quite snug on me. Is the fit on that blazer when buttoned snug on you? Do you ever really button your blazer? Can you fit a sweater underneath those blazers? If I go up any further then the shoulders will not fit. Sorry for all the questions, but these blazers are expensive, and I am not sure if they fit properly. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sheila
Hi Sheila, I actually size down from a usual 10 in blazers to an 8 in my Veronica Beards, so they obviously fit me a little differently than you. Maybe you’re larger in the bosom? I actually hardly ever button my blazers at all. If I do it’s generally to tape a video and I button it so my lapel mic stays in one place. But otherwise, I do not button it, and I daresay most people do not. I also could not wear a sweater under my blazers. But that’s kind of the beauty of the dickey blazer. I almost always wear a tank or tee under my blazer, and then I may add a dickey to give it that hoodie or sweater underneath look. I hope this was helpful, and I’m really sorry that you’re struggling with this. You’re right; it’s an expensive blazer and you need to be happy with it if you’re going to keep it. Maybe try it with a simple tank or close fitting tee underneath? See if you like that look and if that’s how you would wear it.
Hi Kay,
I love jean jackets, cardis, pullovers, and knit blazers (b/c they’re a little softer and less structured). But that Mac coat… wow! I never heard of them and that’s basically what I’ve wished existed instead of trench coats, which I do not like. I will have to keep my eye out for one in a color that suits me. Thanks for that heads up!
Hello, Where did you get the navy and white Geo Coat?
The coat is black and white and it’s here: https://rstyle.me/+0oyW4sDahn3Jk1m141gkBQ
