Define Your Style Refine Your Wardrobe 2024 DFMD Style Series

While the weeks of transitioning from one season to another can sometimes seem a little frustrating weather-wise, they actually serve a beautiful purpose in wardrobe planning. This is the time to map out your wardrobe for the coming season so that it is enjoyable, functional and stylish. Today I’m walking you through 7 easy steps to plan a seasonal wardrobe you will absolutely love wearing.

7 Steps to Plan a Seasonal Wardrobe You'll Love

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

As I’m writing this blog post we’re heading into fall. But these steps work for whatever the next season is on your calendar. My goal is to help you create a functional, beautiful wardrobe that makes getting dressed for your day easy and fun. This post is part of our Define Your Style…Refine Your Wardrobe 2024 style series. You can always find the other posts in this series through the link in the top menu or here.

Step 1 – Evaluate your wardrobe needs.

Well, that sounds basic enough…but also very vague. Let me explain. As you begin to think about the wardrobe you want to wear for the coming season, first evaluate the kinds of outfits you will truly need. Remember, here at Dressed for My Day I stress that we want to build a wardrobe for our real lifestyle, not the one we dream of or the one you may have just retired from (lucky dog!), but the life you’re really living.

With Black Bomber Jacket
seamless tee (TTS) // mid rise ankle pant (TTS or size up for roomier fit) (c/o) // bomber jacket (TTS) // crossbody bag (c/o) // sneakers (more economical option) // necklace (c/o) // bracelet (c/o) // earrings (c/o) // sunglasses (use code KAY10 for 10% off at Patricia Nash Designs only) – See the original blog post for details

And don’t just think about the kind of clothes you think you need for your real lifestyle, but more specifically consider the types of outfits you’ll be wearing. Look at your calendar and think about the activities you’ll be doing. Will you be hiking, antiquing, traveling, volunteering, taking care of grandchildren, caring for aging parents, working, attending women’s events, going to church, working in your yard? We don’t just want to get dressed for our day when we have something out of the ordinary to do. We want to get dressed for the everyday days, so lean into those as you consider your wardrobe needs.

  • Activity: Take just a few minutes to look through your calendar and jot down a list of activities you’ll be doing. Then make another list of the types of outfits you enjoy wearing for those activities in the upcoming season (such as “skirt, tee & denim jacket” or “stylish jeans & sweater with loafers” or maybe “dress with knee high boots”). Think outfit formulas that work for you. And be specific about the items you’ll need to make those formulas work, such as belts, shoe types, bags and jewelry.

If you need a little more help considering your real lifestyle, check out the blog post Define Your Style for Your {Real} Lifestyle.

Step 2 – Consider the current styles.

One of the ways we women of a certain age can continue to look relevant, interesting and our most youthful is to stay current with our style. That doesn’t mean you have to jump on board with every trend that blows through town by any means. In fact, adopting too many trends can have the opposite effect, causing us to look less self-confident, a little desperate and immature. At this point our style should be a well-seasoned, so to speak. We want to look a little “settled into” our style, but also current and in-the-know. It can feel like a bit of a tightrope, but I think the results are worth the effort.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

I encourage you to definitely stay true to your personal style, what you love and what makes you feel authentic and confident. But also choose a few of the most current trends that also genuinely resonate with you and incorporate them into your outfits. This year so many fashion classics are trending, making it easier than ever to be on trend but also true to a more traditional personal style. You might consider adding some leopard print, metallics, splashes of red or lacy details to your outfits. Or you could sport some slingback pumps, ballet flats, relaxed fit jeans, wide leg trousers, a chunky cashmere cardigan or a cropped or fitted blazer – all classics with staying power.

Step 3 – Re-evaluate your personal style.

If you’ve been following along with our 2024 style series to this point, you’ve probably already defined your personal style with three style angles. See the graphic below to refresh your memory. And if you haven’t yet defined your personal style with three style angles of your choice, I suggest you check out this blog post, How to Define Your Personal Style.

Kays-Personal-Style-Angles-2

But those three style angles are not chiseled into stone; you have the freedom to change them at any time. And I always feel like early fall is a time of new beginnings. So this is a great time to re-evaluate your personal style. How are those style angles working for you? Do they feel comfortable and fit your personality? Are you enjoying building a wardrobe and outfits based on them? Or do they feel like a prison locking you into something that no longer feels authentic to who you are?

Blazer with Wide Leg Ankle Jeans
tailored stretch blazer // sweater vest in the same fall berry //  Paige Anessa raw hem wide leg crop jeans // Naturalizer kitten heel slingbacks // necklace // earrings – See the original blog post for details.
  • Activity: Think back over the past week. Have the outfits you’ve worn and enjoyed reflected your three chosen style angles? Better yet, if you have them, look back over photos of outfits you’ve worn recently. Do you look authentic and like the best version of your true self in those outfits? If yes, move on with joy. If no, reconsider those three style angles. The possibilities are endless!

Step 4 – Choose your color palette.

I absolutely think it’s a great idea to have your colors analyzed to find out what hues look best on you. In fact, if it’s been a while since you had that done, you may want to do it again. Our coloring definitely changes as we age. But while I think a color analysis provides you with invaluable information, I don’t believe that’s where you should stop when it comes to your wardrobe.

Stand Collar Jacket with hidden hood

I’m a proponent of building a seasonal wardrobe with a limited color palette – one that YOU limit for yourself. When I fill my closet with every color that I can wear, I easily get frustrated when I try to create multiple outfits from those items. I prefer a closet with fewer items that easily mix and match rather than one filled with clothes in every color of my personal rainbow. It makes getting dressed so much more fun and easier.

Long Line Blazer

By the way, that doesn’t mean that everything I have in, say, berry red will mix and match and be worn together. That would be really tricky in my wardrobe. But it does mean that everything that I can wear with one berry red jacket can probably also be worn with another berry red jacket. Make sense? Plus, I just know how to work with those colors; I become an expert at wearing them. For instance, I have the right lipstick and jewelry to make them sing. And I can paint my nails a color that works with everything in my closet.

Vince Mélange Shaker stitch pullover sweater

So I always recommend that we select 3-5 neutrals we’re wear for a season and 3-5 signature colors we’ll have in our closet for that season. And hey, if you occasionally allow a rogue color into your wardrobe, no big deal. You’re in charge here! But limiting my color palette actually helps me to shop more strategically and helps me to “stay in my lane” with my personal style.

  • Activity: Take the time to make a list of the 3-5 neutrals and 3-5 signature colors you’ll wear this fall. I generally choose colors for fall and winter and then a different set for spring and summer, but you do what works for you. Make a graphic or picture of the colors and keep them in your phone for easy reference. You might want to check out the blog post Define Your Style with Colors & Neutrals for additional insights.

Step 5 – Set your budget.

It’s important to most of us to build a wardrobe that authentically reflects our personal style and works for our lifestyle, but also stays within our financial means. Nothing is more miserable than looking at a closet full of clothes that you went into debt to purchase.

Looking at the Talbots Catalog

So definitely don’t skip this step. Set your budget for replenishing your seasonal wardrobe before you start looking at catalogs and websites and store displays.

I’m frequently asked what a woman over 50 who is on a set income should budget for clothing. I honestly can’t tell you. I even asked my brother, who is a financial coach, to share his opinion, but he had no crystal clear answers. He did say, however, that clothing is one of those budget items that many people underestimate. His advice is to “get real” about all of our budget line items. Otherwise we run into problems and start robbing from Peter to pay Paul.

PUrchasing my items

I also think it’s wise to establish a clothing budget that works for you and your spouse, and then stick to it. I’m often asked about my personal clothing budget, but let me remind you that purchasing clothing is a business cost for me. That doesn’t mean that I get to deduct very much of it for tax purposes, mind you. But I purchase my clothing out of my business budget, not our household budget. Showing clothing options is what I do for a living, so I have a wardrobe that I keep for myself year over year, and then I have many more things I pass forward to others after I’m finished sharing them. No one really needs all the things I share here or on YouTube. I certainly don’t. I’m actually looking forward to the day when I retire and no longer have clothes filling up three closets!

  • Activity: Well this is obvious. But take the time to establish a budget for the season. I prefer a seasonal budget rather than a monthly one for clothing. That way I can be more strategic about sales and special offers, such as Labor Day weekend and Black Friday weekend.

Step 6 – Shop your closet first.

As you plan your seasonal wardrobe, don’t head to the store just yet. Shop your closet first. For instance, if you’re loving the splash of red that everyone is adding to their outfits this year, see if you have red items you can use already in your possession. Maybe a red shoulder bag, shoes, hat or sweater.

Lauren Ralph Lauren puffer vest
Vince Vide slingback flats // Mother the Hustler frayed ankle jeans (wearing 31) // Vince Baja crochet sweater (TTS) // Bony Levy BL Icon diamond pendant necklace // Lauren Ralph Lauren puffer vest – see the original post for details

Or if you’re wanting to wear the modern denim, see if you already have a pair of wide leg, flares or straight leg jeans from last year that you loved wearing. While these silhouettes are trending, not that much has really changed in denim from last year. So if you caught up with the trends last year, you’re probably good to go.

The New Shirt Jacket for 2024
the Legend™ Sweater Shirt // graphic tee not available // wide leg ankle jeans // sneakers (great alternative more economical) // belt // crossbody bag // necklace // bracelet // earrings – See the original blog post for details.

For instance, I was certainly tempted to buy new ankle length wide leg jeans this fall. But the Madewell wide leg jeans above from last year are still on trend, so I’m sticking with them. There’s no need to use your budget buying duplicates of things you already own and love.

  • Activity: There’s no way around it. Before you start purchasing new things for fall, I highly recommend pulling your fall and winter clothes out of storage and assessing the situation.

Step 7 – Prioritize your outfit makers.

Yes, this is the final step of planning your seasonal wardrobe, then you get to begin shopping…if you wish. When we start shopping for a new season I think it’s smart to prioritize some purchases over others. That’s a great way to stretch your budget for more impact and fewer regrets.

warm blush double-breasted blazer from Talbots
textured double-breasted blazer (TTS) // straight crop jean in tile white (run large; sized down to 29) // silk blouse in natural white (TTS) (use code 20KAY for 20% off) // pearl detail ivory sandals (TTS – now 60% off!!!) // pearl hoops // triple bead necklace // pearl bracelet // diamond pendant necklace // similar crossbody // sunglasses – See the original blog post for details.

I recommend prioritizing outfit makers. These are those pieces that add personality, style, interest to your outfits. They’ll set you apart and bring you joy, too. Yes, you absolutely need some basics, but my bet is that you have more of those already than you may think. If not, definitely stock up on a t-shirt or two, a great pair of jeans (or more if you wear them frequently), a wear-everywhere dress, a trending denim skirt and a good pair of trousers or three.

Sam Edelman Loafers

But the items I really shop for, scout out and spend the bulk of my budget on? The outfit makers:

  • jackets – jackets are sooo on trend this year (bomber, lady, blazer, trench, utility, barn, you name it!)
  • shoes – shoes can make or break your outfits, so make sure yours are in good shape and modern, but also comfortable and wearable
  • stylish dress – we all need at least one “wow” dress that stands alone and makes a statement
  • unique pullover sweaters – know the silhouette and neckline that works best for you and have a stunning sweater in each of your signature colors; also include sweaters with stripes or other interesting details
  • handbag – again, this accessory can make or break your outfits; it’s worth getting a good one or two
#Nsale Fall Outfit Inspiration
Nordstrom marled knit blazer // Allsaints Stevie cropped t-shirt // Mother the Hustler frayed ankle jeans // BL Icon diamond pendant necklace // Unity platform sneaker // Kate Spade NY large Carlyle leather tote – See the original blog post for details. (A lot of this is on sale again!)

I like to make a wish list of the outfit makers and really pursue them. I check my favorite brands to see what they’re carrying, but I also scout out others before I choose the one or two I love. These are personality driven pieces, so make sure they align with your personal style and really “tell your story.”

Paul Green Ursula Ballet Flats in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2024
Wit & Wisdom ‘Ab’solution Skyrise High Waist Ankle Bootcut Jeans // Rails Geneva Stripe cotton blend cardigan // Kate Spade NY large Carlisle leather tote // Paul Green Vienna Chelsea boots (TTS) // Bony Levy BL Icon diamond pendant necklace – See the original blog post for details.

How many outfit makers do you need? That’s really up to you. I like to wear mine frequently and have no problem, for instance, wearing one stunning blazer multiple ways for a full week of travel. So I’d just recommend having enough outfit makers so that you can easily add some polish and pizzaz to each outfit. These don’t have to be expensive or even investment pieces, by the way. I recommend high-low dressing, creating outfits from a mixture of investment-worthy pieces and those I found on sale or at a bargain store.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans
tweed bomber jacket // striped crewneck tee // corduroy hat

Let’s say, just for the sake of having a starting place, you want a dozen different outfit makers that you can weave in and out of your outfits during the upcoming season. I suggest some of those be completer pieces, such as jackets or cardigans, a couple others be accessories and the remainder be either statement tops or one-and-done dresses, depending on your personal style.

  • Activity: Spend some time looking through the catalogs of your favorite fashion retailers to see what outfit makers they are highlighting. Which ones strike you and seem to resonate with your personal style? Do you already have similar items in your closet? Throw those into the mix first. Then begin shopping for the additional statement-making items that will make your wardrobe fun, interesting and stylish.

Blessed for My Day

For the past seven days I’ve conducted a little experiment. I’ve NOT gotten dressed for my day. No I didn’t go naked. Hahaha! And I did practice good hygiene and skin care. But I didn’t put any effort into my outfits at all – no tucking, belting, accessorizing. And I didn’t wear any makeup, do much to my hair or add jewelry. In a couple of weeks I’ll sharing the findings from my little experiment in a YouTube video.

But I can tell you this much now: after the initial freedom wore within a day or two, this little project grew wearisome. I felt like I was missing out on “the party,” and I couldn’t quite figure out why. But now I know. Getting dressed for our day is one of the ways we can tangibly celebrate life. It’s similar to decorating your house, baking and lighting seasonal candles for Christmas. It prepares us aesthetically to celebrate the day. Trust me, you do not want to miss out on the celebration. Get dressed for your day.

Go then, eat your bread in happiness, and drink your wine with a cheerful heart; for God has already approved your works. See that your clothes are white all the time, and that there is no lack of oil on your head. Enjoy life with the wife whom you love all the days of your futile life which He has given you under the sun, all the days of your futility; for this is your reward in life and in your work which you have labored under the sun. ~ Ecclesiastes 9:7-9

  1. I follow several mature fashion bloggers but you are definitely my favourite because you give actually useful, actionable advice. Too often bloggers present “here’s a great outfit” and it is but then they don’t provide the context of how to style so that we can create our own great outfits without constantly having to buy new clothes. I’m quite sure I have more than enough clothes to head into fall with possibly a very few needed additions so I’m going to tackle my closet this weekend per your great advice. Thanks for everything you do for your subscribers, Kay!

    1. Wonderful. I’m so glad you found this helpful. I just try to answer the questions I think I would want the answers to. I’m so grateful I get to do what I do. 😊

  2. Oh my goodness, Kay, this post is full of great information! I’m going to have to read it a few times to absorb it all. The first part that stuck in my brain, your comments about color. I’ve been dying to start wearing my pumpkin oranges and I just got out my mustard yellows. Style, I have a new sleeveless sweater that I want to wear, but the temperatures have to cool a bit more for that. One of my struggles, shoes. They really do make an outfit, but I have tiny, wide feet. Finding stylish shoes in my size is a real challenge. Any suggestions on where to look, other than Nordstrom? I can filter by my size and width in their search engine. I know you’ve featured Ally – and I did get one pair of chocolate brown heels from them, but their prices really are out of my budget. I made the exception because I couldn’t find any other manufacturer which had a wide width chocolate brown heel, and chocolate brown is one of my signature neutrals, my “black”. Anyhow, thank you, this post is excellent, I may comment again later after I process more of it. 🙂 PS – the berry pink looks great on you! Those wisteria purples, and the light and berry pinks are great colors for you. And I really appreciate today’s BFMD. 🙂

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m very glad you enjoyed the post. I apologize, but I really don’t have any recommendations for shoes in your size. But maybe someone else will chime in with some ideas. Thank you for commenting. 😊

  3. Hi Kay and such a great post and BFMD!
I’ve been retired for 2 years and just getting to appreciate the value of putting together a wardrobe that truly suits my very casual lifestyle. I want to look great and comfortable no matter what I’m doing.
Thank you for passing along your practical and sage advice. I appreciate all you do!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. That’s very kind. I’m so glad this was helpful. I’ve learned so much myself in the past few years and I’m just passing it on. Have a great weekend! 🥰

  4. That is good advice about budgeting. In my younger days, I went to thrift stores and yard sales. I found that thrift stores in wealthy neighborhoods had some great things. It was fun to find a beautiful bargain! I don’t have to now, but it is an option that not many talk about. It is a great source for classic vintage item.

    1. Yes, those can be great sources for lovely finds, especially if you visit them often and maybe strike up relationships with the managers who can help you watch for specific types of items. Thanks so much for sharing. 😊

  5. Hi Kay I absolutely agree with what you wrote before your Devotional today , I too had 2 days when I didn’t bother ( not because I couldn’t be bothered, but because I wondered if it would make much difference to me) Blimey it did! Although I was wearing the same clothes I usually wear like you I had no makeup on , no jewellery or other embellishments , I spent 2 days not even feeling like ‘Me’ and didn’t do half the stuff I usually would , I felt invisible , a friend of my husbands called to see him and thought I was unwell , anyhow the final to this was on my 2nd day in the evening I rang one of my female friends and mid conversation she said ‘ I must tell you my daughter said it doesn’t matter when or what time of day she sees you , she said you always look polished and pulled together , even when you are out on your long walks” , well Kay that fixed it for me I’m always going to be ‘Dressed for My Day’😀. Thank you for ALL the Fabulous advice lovely lady ❤️

    1. Haha! I love that story. Thanks so much for sharing. I feel SO much better today since I’m dressed and put together for my day! 🙌🏻

  6. AS always, Kay, these are great style tips, with beautiful examples to illustrate all! Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, as it represents new beginnings and fresh perspectives, especially with regard to style and attire! In particular, I love your insights regarding jackets (that cropped sweater blazer is marvelous, and in a scrumptious color!). In my book, they are the anchors in my wardrobe and I don’t hesitate to add them (as appropriate, of course 🙂 ). Thanks for all you do!

    1. Beautiful! Yes, I’ve discovered that if you have a few statement making complete pieces you have won half the battle. A pair of jeans and a t-shirt will do if you have a great sweater or jacket. Thanks for sharing.

  7. How fun! I do follow those girls and love them! Hope you enjoyed your visit today. What a wonderful post! Will definitely be pinning this one to refer back to. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    1. Julie and I talked for 4 hours nonstop! It was a blast and one I really needed. This can be a lonely job, so it’s so rewarding to meet up with someone else who does what you do. I guess that’s how it is with everything though. 🤗

  8. Kay, first, sorry, I hope this isn’t a duplicate comment. I tried to comment earlier today but it didn’t seem to publish. Anyhow, what a great list! It took me a couple reads to absorb it all. I love that you keep us current on the styles and trends that say “today”, so we can pick and choose what and how to incorporate them into our closets. Fall does feel like a new start, and I have to admit I’m excited to pull out my pumpkin and rust oranges and my mustard yellows. I’ve been thinking of new ways to wear them, new color combinations. I also picked up a sleeveless sweater that I’m dying to wear, but I have to wait until it cools down. One of my biggest challenges though are shoes. I have tiny, wide feet, so it’s hard to find stylish shoes in my size. I search on Nordstrom’s website, but would love some other suggestions. I did buy one pair of the Ally shoes after you highlighted the brand, but they are definitely not in my everyday budget. I made an exception because they had a color and style I could not find anywhere else (dark chocolate brown heels). Really appreciated your BFMD. PS Love the berry pink color on you.
