I’ve had several people already ask me if the shacket or shirt jacket is still in style for 2024. While I’ve featured these previously oversized, rather bulky shirts worn as jackets in the past, I’ve rarely worn them in real life. They just felt a little too “lumberjack-ish” to me. What about you? But this year there’s a new shirt in town and it feels a lot more wearable to me. See if you like the new shirt jacket for fall 2024.

The new shirt jacket is a lighter, slimmer fitting shirt that can be worn as a jacket. Sure, you can easily wear a flannel or fleece shirt you already have in your closet in this capacity for the same effect. In fact, I’ll definitely be wearing my flannel shirt from Frank & Eileen this way, as I did in this blog post last year. See below.

The Faherty Brand Legend™ Sweater Shirt is just slightly heavier and thicker than a flannel shirt. Here’s how Faherty describes it:
Our Legend Sweater Shirt is superlative in every way. It’s our #1 bestseller and the coziest, softest and stretchiest shirt you’ll ever wear as a result of our unique knit fabric. The classic, rugged flannel styling is so easy to wear – on its own or as a layering piece for added style and warmth.
~ Faherty Brand
But Faherty also notes on their website that they’ve “updated this style from previous seasons to fit true to size” and that if you want a more oversized fit you should size up. I share all this simply to point out the trend this year is to wear your shirt jacket more fitted than oversized.

I ordered this Legend™ Sweater Shirt specifically to share with you the new trend in the shirt jacket. There aren’t many other examples out there quite yet, but there will be. All of the trend reports I’m reading say this is the direction these casual completer pieces are going this year. We’re moving past the oversized, heavier shirt-like jackets toward more jacket-like, fitted shirts.

I suspect that the reason shirt jackets have moved to a closer fitting and more streamlined shirt is because we’re wearing more wide-leg and relaxed fit jeans and trousers. Remember the rules of proportion. If you wear something fitted down below – like skinny jeans or leggings – you want to wear something more relaxed or even billowy up top. Thus the shirt jacket or shacket was birthed during the time when those silhouettes were more popular. But now that wide-leg jeans are trending, we need to wear something more fitted up top to create those balanced proportions.

The new shirt jacket for fall 2024 is a good casual option to wear with a simple t-shirt, jeans and sneakers combo. It provides a little more interest and depth to this outfit, but doesn’t add a lot of bulk.

This is the kind of outfit I love to wear when out exploring a little town, going to the farmer’s market, running errands or meeting up with a friend for coffee.

Like I said, there aren’t just a lot of shirt jackets out there yet. The Faherty Legend™ Sweater Shirt is pricey, but it was the best example of the standard that I could find to share with you. Check it out at the website because you’ll see other prints and colors there, too. I always think it’s important to share the “standard” when featuring a new item. Then as you see others pop up in stores over the coming weeks you’ll know what you’re looking for. I’m much more on board with the new shirt jacket for fall 2024 than I was the bulky one of the past. What about you?
I am sharing a few new shirt jackets I found at various retailers as well as links to other things I’m wearing below. Thanks so much for stopping in!

Are you a slave to anything? I have to admit, I’ve been through season of life when I was a slave to work, a slave to food and even a slave to laziness. I felt like I couldn’t get control over myself and I was held captive by the sway those things had over me.
But the Bible reminds me that if I belong to Christ, then I have been bought with a price – His death on the cross. I am not meant to live as a slave to those things or other fleshly pursuits. Instead, if I will remember that I am a servant of the Lord then I will be more likely to submit to Him rather than the desires of the flesh. And the more I walk in the Spirit – as His child and bond-servant – the easier it is to walk in the freedom that comes with that redemption.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought for a price: therefore glorify God in your body. ~ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Hi Kay, I’m not a big fan of the “shacket”. The oversized flannel ones are fine in the dead of winter over a turtleneck, but otherwise, why not just add a sweater or lightweight jacket? A denim jacket is always a winner or whatever compliments your outfit. To me a shacket is not something I see myself either needing or reaching for on a regular basis.
Yup! It’s a shirt over a shirt! I often wear a denim shirt over a T. Thanks for the post. Always enjoy them .
I didn’t like shackets. I rather use a shirt as a jacket in the summer. I have crop shirts I use as jackets too. I’m short and small so crop lengths look better on me. They hit me at the right spot. Love the devotional. I’ve been a slave to fashion. I’m trying to stop by being careful with what I buy.
I also would prefer to wear a light jacket or denim over a shirt. I’ve never bought one of these shackets. As a matter of fact this post makes me long for a super cute denim shirt I had back in the ’90s. I sure do miss my ’90s wardrobe and the body that went with it! LOL
I own a light weight cream shacket from our Marks store here in Canada and it is the perfect weight for the fall. I am now a fan.
The older I get the less likely I am to wear something that veers toward masculine. That is the problem I’ve had will Shackets and various other pieces of clothing. The one you are wearing has a soft texture and lighter look that is much more appealing to my eye than stiffer, heavier, darker fabrics I’ve seen in shackets previously. It certainly makes a difference in the vibe it gives off.
I see that the Legend Sweater Shirt is also offered by Nordstrom, but on their website the comments complain of the shirt pilling after one wear. Would you please comment about the fabric of this shirt? Do you feel the fabric will not hold up? I love the looks of this shirt/jacket but it is pricey if the quality isn’t there.
I wonder if the comments are more related to the earlier version of the shirt jacket because some of those are old and it’s a new version of the shirt, but I don’t know. If you check the FAHERTY website you’ll see that the shirt comes in several different fabrics. Anyhow I like the fabric of this one. I haven’t worn it enough to know if it will pill with wear, but I do like the feel of this one a lot. I recommend it with no reservations. But it is indeed smart to check reviews. That said, the Nordstrom listing has 166 reviews and most are very favorable.
I’ve never been a shacket girl either. They do feel a bit masculine, but the Faherty seems ok. Still, I will skip this
My question is how to keep blue jeans from leaking blue onto suede boots. I bought new ones before I recalled that fading issue. Help
I’m new to your blog. I’ve seen you before with either Cyndi or Jo-Lynne and like your style and how you own it. I’ve been leaning into this trend alittle already with my lighter weight button up shirts. I still plan to wear my heavier alittle over sized ones for walking with my leggings when the weather turns colder but yes I wasn’t as comfortable in the more lumber- Jack style ones.
Minority opinion here! I have an LLBean shacket my sister gave me years ago and still love it. I’m 4′ 11″ and not very substantially built but still embrace the lumberjack look for myself at times. I’m a rural girl by upbringing and at heart, so that probably explains it. I enjoy your posts and have learned a lot, Kay. And I’ve also learned quite a bit from the ladies who follow you. Thanks all around!
I do love the look of the LLBean shirt jackets, especially the corduroy ones. I think I included those in the shopping widget too. Thanks so much for your kind words.
Hi Kay! Enjoy your stay with your family, sounds like fun! I do like the Flahery shirt. Maybe I missed it, but did you share the size you got? I will assume a medium since you said it was true to size. I was able to size down in shackets last season, but I probably need to stick with my normal Medium in this. I am very similar in size to you.
Sorry about that. Yes, I have a medium.
Hi, Kay! Excited you’re coming to Texas. We live in Houston. If I knew you were coming here and that you’re speaking at an event which I could attend, I would make every effort to!
I like your red nails.
I never embraced the shacket
So don’t win one. I did purchase some sweater jackets and blazers, some that button and others that are simply open. For fall or spring chill I do wear jackets-/ I have Jean jackets and light cargo jackets ( talbots). I also have one Columbia rain slicker for nasty weather. I simply wear a sweater or heavy tee underneath depending….
Just wanted to tell you Kay, love your new hair cut and style, very becoming on you.
I so enjoy watching you and the fashion you bring
Look forward each week!
Take care and GOD BLESS!
Hi Kay, I like the more streamlined version of the shacket. The larger, oversized shackets overwhelm me. On a different note, have you thought about writing a post about what makes a good host? I know that’s more lifestyle than fashion but there may be more people (like me) who would like tips on what to provide for guests, etc. Thank you and I enjoy your blog!
I am 5’2” and a shirt over a tee usually makes me feel even shorter or frumpy. You make this outfit rock however. Can’t wait to see some outfits that will compliment and longnate this 65 year old body. Love your devotions too
I have owned two of these Faherty shirts for a few years now. I wear them as “jackets” because mine are oversized due to weight loss. I have the black/gray plaid and the light blue/light gray plaid. They are so soft and stretchy. My son has the men’s version too!
