The Softer Side of Summer Style

Well hello Monday! We’re now into the long days of summer, but we continue to experience some mild days here in Ohio. And I love those days when the sun shines bright but the breezes blow cool. It’s on those softer days of summer that I reach for lightweight, but more substantial clothing, like these “new opal” slim utility pants and this whisper soft embroidered voile top. Today’s outfit is all about the softer side of summer style.

I was enthusiastically on board when I saw Talbots’ new summer collection filled with bright sunny colors. And I still am! But I also find that I’m drawn to the softer shades of summer, such as pale salmon pink, cool taupe, pearly whites and other light pastels. These are the gentle, earthy colors that remind me of the fragile shells we gather on the beach in the soft morning hours of a new day.

And these gentle hues somehow look cool and refreshing to the eye, too. Don’t you think? Not only do they create a distinctly feminine palette, but they’re just easy on the senses.

Soft Side of Summer

I think these hushed tones are especially suited to a lovely date night look. Whether you’re dining alfresco at a favorite restaurant or you’re setting a romantic table for two on your back patio, you’ll look casual but subtly sensual in your own combination of these pretty shades.

Soft Side of Summer

For today’s look I topped my “new opal” Secret Stretch Casual Utility Slim Pants with a flirty new top from J.Jill in blush pink. You may have already seen me share these Casual Utility Slim Pants in camel and sage leaf green in previous posts (such as here and here and here). They fit so nicely and wear so easily. They’re lightweight, so these full length pants are the perfect choice for summer.

Soft Side of Summer

My blush Embroidered Voile Top is almost sold out in regular misses sizes, but I have a way around that for you. I’m actually wearing a size Petite Medium, whereas I normally wear Misses Small at J.Jill. So definitely size down or consider the petite size. This pretty Embroidered Voile Top also comes in navy, but it’s available in even fewer sizes.

I love the split neckline, the embroidered floral dots and the scalloped edges on this lightweight shirt. But the flounced 3/4 sleeves are my favorite detail on the 100% cotton tunic top.

Embroidered Voile Top

The top is sheer and cool, but I don’t feel like it requires a camisole underneath. So that the top could steel the show, I kept my jewelry minimal. My necklace is no longer available, but my Kendra Scott Veronica Hoop Earrings are, and they’ve fast become my summer go-to favorites.

Soft Side of Summer

I finished my look off with my Gia Sandals (this year’s model) and my oh-so-summery straw clutch. By the way, my clutch and the Secret Stretch Casual Utility Slim Pants are 40% off with code 29238. And the Embroidered Voile Top is also 40% off the already discounted price, no code needed. The Gia Rattan Buckle Sandals are at Talbots, and there you can get 1 item for 30% off, 2 for 40% off and 3 for 50% off.

Blessed for My Day

Sometimes my life gets out of balance. Can you relate? And surprisingly, perhaps, one of the times when I’m most prone to lose the balance I try to maintain is during the summer. That’s simply because I’m prone to shift my schedule a little here and there during the summer. My normal routine is sometimes interrupted by the welcomed addition of summer house guests or vacation or my husband’s time off from work or just the longer days.

I’ve found, however, that it’s all the more important for me to withdraw and protect my alone time during these busy or long or “different” days. I encourage you to stay consistent in your daily quiet times with the Lord if you already have that pattern built into your life, too. And if you don’t, I encourage you to begin setting aside some time each day for prayer, Bible reading and meditation on biblical truth. I think you’ll be blessed by the sense of stability and balance that precious time brings to your days.

After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. ~ Matthew 14:23

Spread the love
xoxo, Kay

  1. Beautiful and soft outfit, Kay. You look lovely in it as you do in all of your outfits. I like JJill styles also. Thanks for sharing.
I treasure my quiet time with the Lord and do my best to be consistent with it. I find I get out-of-sorts when I miss my devotions.

  2. Agree Kay. I love your brights (because I love to wear brights) but this outfit is just stunning and beautiful! That petite top works perfectly! Clever!

  3. This is such a soft, beautiful look for summer!! I love JJill’s attention to detail.
Thanks for sharing thoughts for inner beauty, as well! I look forward to your blogs.

  4. Good morning, Kay! Great post, I love the idea of a softer summer style. I have the utility pants in sage and camel. Do you suggest sizing up for the opal? I always worry a bit about white/light colored pants.

    1. Hi Ellie. Thanks for sharing. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. No, I have the same size in all three pants and these are just fine. I’d suggest going with your same size. ?

  5. I just have to say your husband is doing an awesome job as your photographer! These photos are beautiful, not only of you, of course, but the background. Wow!
You look beautiful in these soft colors too!

  6. I have added more soft colors this year. I have a blouse called barley pink, not barely pink and it’s so pretty. Guess what color barley corn is? LOL. I love the chalk pink you wore a few weeks ago too. I have a huge retail outlet just minutes away but I still get cheaper online.

  7. What a beautiful outfit on you, Kay! I love wearing soft peach and soft pink during the summer. Here in south central Georgia we are being blessed with a few days of lower humidity, highs in the 80’s, and a nice breeze. Oh, if it could just stay this way. They are predicting upper 90’s this weekend with high humidity. I’m so glad that you enjoyed your outing yesterday. And I love the BFMD! My quiet time is high priority for me, so even on days when we have early morning appointments, I get up even earlier so that I can get my day started the right way.
