What to Wear this Summer Instead of Shorts

Well hello! And welcome to Dressed for My Day. I’m glad you dropped in for a little style inspiration. The number one blog post ever at Dressed for My Day was this one that I published last year. In fact, that may be the blog post that originally brought you my direction. In that post, Instead of Shorts? Wear These 11 Alternatives, I shared modern styles that you can wear during the heat of the summer if you just don’t want to wear shorts. So for today’s YouTube video I decided to offer those same sorts of tips, but with up-to-date offerings.

What to Wear Instead of Shorts this Summer

Which camp are you in?

  • Alternatives? Why would I ever want to wear anything besides shorts during the summer?
  • I love my shorts, but variety is the spice of life!
  • Hmm, if I’m burning up I’ll put on shorts…but I won’t go out in public in them.
  • Nope! No shorts in my wardrobe at all!

We’re all different. And as we get older I think we all realize the necessity of giving each other a little grace when it comes to our wardrobe peculiarities. Aging is not for the faint of heart, is it? Hahaha! So whether you wear shorts most of the time during the summer or none of the time, I think you’ll find something in today’s video that you like.

Now not all the clothing or accessories shown in the video are new or available. But don’t you worry. I’ve created a shopping widget with lots of options based on the suggestions I gave in today’s episode.

When you watch the video on the YouTube channel, you’ll find the links to all the clothing and accessories in the video that’s available in the Description Box. I’m copying and pasting that information here, too. But you’ll also find most of the “instead of shorts” items in the shopping widget below.

By the way, many of the items that are available are on sale. So click through for the price. For instance, at Talbots they’ve extended Friends & Family with a new twist. Now you can get 3 items for 50% off, 2 for 40% off or 1 for 30% off. Hmmm. I may have to look things over again!

Blessed for My Day

We really shouldn’t be surprised when we discover that we’re not in sync with the world around us. But for some reason I’m always caught a little off guard when I begin to feel like I’m walking against the current rather than going with the flow. Have you been feeling that under current lately, too?

Let’s allow God’s Word to anchor us when the push and shove of emotions and appeals and even conventional wisdom begin to toss us first one way and then another. We don’t need to be surprised if we find that we feel outnumbered by those who are going in a different direction either. Instead, we can cling to the authority of God’s Word and allow it to keep us grounded and in step with our Lord.

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it. ~ Matthew 7:13-14

Spread the love
xoxo, Kay

  1. Great video Kay. I am from the mix it up camp. My legs are not as youthful as they once were but I still like a denim short. My go to is Not Your Daughters Jeans. Loved Blessed for my Day. I think everyone is feeling out of sorts with the current issues the past few months. It’s been challenging for sure.

  2. Love your video’s!! I like a mix of things to wear in the summer. I will wear shorts once in a while and if it’s really, really hot. Otherwise, I stick to pedal pusher’s (this year) or crop pants. I also wear a cute knit dress once in a while. The only jeans I like for summer are white crops. Otherwise, I get too hot in jeans. Oh, and also love my Talbots chino’s. Please don’t be hard on yourself. Your video’s are very good and I wouldn’t have picked up on the fact you forgot to talk about one of the items. I’m just hanging on WHAT you’re telling us! xoxo

  3. Loved this video, Kay. I don’t usually wear shorts but your recent post on shorts convinced me to try. Maybe I’ve been choosing the wrong style. But for the most part, I wear a lot of the alternatives. So this video gave me lots of ideas!

  4. Thanks Kay for your video, try not to worry about the occasional mistake your videos are really great, really enjoyable and informative (I think sometimes we are harder on ourselves when we make mistakes). I hardly ever wear shorts except very occasionally at home, not as happy with my legs as I once was and am a bit on the modest side anyway. I tend to wear skirts, maxi dresses and ankle length light pants of some description. It is currently winter here now so am storing this info up for next Summer. xx

  5. Hi Kay! Great choices you gave us today! Another option is the “skort.” Skorts are great for anytime you might otherwise wear shorts, but I think they are a bit more modest. The outer skirt doesn’t bind or fit too closely, so looks smooth when wearing. The underneath short fits closely and provides modesty with movement and comfort. Love my skorts!

  6. Thanks Kay! Great ideas for summer. I’m not into shorts, but you gave so many alternatives to them.
I am thankful that during this time and always, God is in control. We live in very challenging times from all angles. BFMD is such a blessing to me. You help to keep me grounded in the Word and in faith.
The Lord bless you and your family.

  8. Love your videos! What good choices!! Would love to know where the elbow length top you have on today is from?

  9. I’m going to be on the look out for the cropped, linen joggers! They are so cute!! Great suggestions! I fall into the same “camp” as you and sometimes wear shorts. I love the Aline skirts but sometimes have a hard time finding a top. I like a more fitting top with the Aline skirt. Any suggestions for tops that go with the Aline skirts? Thanks!

  10. I just wanted to comment that I look forward to your e-mails every day. I have purchased a few things that you have recommended, but that’s not the main reason I watch your videos and read your e-mails. I’ve been learning how to put together the clothes I already have in my closet in different ways. I’ve been learning to accept my body as it is. And I’ve been learning that I don’t necessarily need a lot more clothes, just a few pieces to round out my wardrobe so that I’m ready for any occasion to comes up. Thank you for showing everyday women how to look our best on a day-to-day basis. And you do it with such understated charm and grace!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing this, Joan. I really appreciate your kind and affirming words more than you know. This is exactly my goal, so I’m very grateful that you are enjoying it.

  11. Dear Kay,

Your new video is excellent and thought provoking!

You made an interesting point about clothing choices being fresh and current, especially with simple pieces. I’m always seeking this quality when shopping new or shopping my own closet. Kay, how can I be sure I achieve this, even with things I may have owned for a few years? What are your favorite ways of deciding to move something out of your repertoire? I especially have trouble with this if I sense I made a mistake in a purchase and then feel guilty passing it on. How to get better at strategic purchases, whether it’s an investment or a sale find? I’d really love a more cohesive wardrobe, and I don’t want to date myself unnecessarily or have a mish-mash of separates in my closet. I’m still a value shopper at heart, who has trouble with recognizing the investment purchases I should make.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

BTW, I’m a skirt girl. Long skirts, midi skirts, knee length skirts. That’s my game:-)

  12. I’m in the no shorts camp. I love your videos and this particular type of video is just so helpful.
Thank you for all the extra details you give us. I’ve had blogs so I know how much work they can be. All those photos! I had a garden blog one year and I fought the weather and light to get it right. The dinosaur days before good cameras.

  13. Kay….great job on your video. You are so genuine. Thank you for all your hard work putting together the videos. I look forward to your daily posts. I’m from the mix it up camp and I really enjoyed the 10 options.
