In yesterday’s blog post I shared my absolute favorite elevated spring outfit formula, but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to share more great spring outfit formulas today. The cool days of spring sometimes seem to drag on forever. But before we know it, we’ll no longer be adding those completer pieces and our outfits will be decidedly lighter for those hotter days of summer. So before spring slips past us, I’m rounding up 6 favorite spring outfit formulas for us to wear now.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

Today I’m illustrating 6 “looser” spring outfit formulas. These are really just style formulas that you can work within other equations that you enjoy wearing. You’ll see what I mean as we get going. You can shop current looks through the links in the captions of the photo. Some photos are from previous seasons, so those items are not available. You can check out the details of all outfits in the original blog post through the link in the caption.

Bookend Your Outfit

I often forget about the opportunity to bookend my outfits by wearing the same color up top and in my shoes. But this is such a great way to pull together a look.

twill button front top // mid rise stovepipe jeans // leather sandals // bamboo handle woven tote // earrings // see original blog post here

During the winter bookending your look can sometimes look a little heavy because shoes are heavier. So drawing that much attention to a shoe with a contrasting color can in your pants or skirt makes the shoe look heavy. But during the spring and summer when our shoes are smaller or more strappy, this formula works beautifully.

Double Up Your Color Up Top

linen button front shirt// perfect reversible tank top // cropped linen pants// crochet leather handbag // sandals // earrings// necklace// stone bracelet // gold bangle bracelet // see original blog post here

I’m a big proponent of doubling up the color in your top and your jacket, cardigan or button-up shirt. I never would have thought to do this just 5 years ago, but I wear this formula on repeat since I learned it. And I always get great results.

linen button front shirt // tank// linen-blend shorts// sandals (more economical option at J.Jill) // earrings// necklace// stone bracelet // gold bangle bracelet // see original blog post here

Because this formula works so well, I always try to purchase a tank in the same color as my button-up shirts. And I often purchase a tee or tank in the same color as my blazers, cardigans or jackets, too. Here’s an example from last year below.

Go Monochromatic

A monochromatic or tonal outfit is always chic, really any time of the year. But during the spring we don’t have to include as many elements to work this equation.

A tonal outfit doesn’t have to be comprised of garments in the exact same color. And you can also wear elements in a print to create a beautiful monochromatic outfit, like I did below.

Combine Black and White with Cognac Accessories

I love the combination of black and white with cognac accessories year round. But during the spring and summer those accessories play a bigger part in the equation. My first thought might be to wear black belt, shoes and handbag with a black and white outfit. And that would be okay. But cognac leather accessories add richness and depth to this outfit formula.

At the top of the post you did see me wear ivory and black with black accessories. And I definitely think the black looks more cohesive there. But there’s just something about adding cognac (caramel, saddle leather, rich brown) accessories to black and true white.

This isn’t a rule, by the way. None of these formulas are rules. But they do yield great results, so keep them in mind as you’re putting together outfits for the spring and into summer.

Dress with Sandals

Of course wearing a dress with sandals is also perfect for summer, but now is the time to start working this formula when the weather allows.

I tend to choose sandals in a flesh tone or, my favorite with dresses, gold. But, if you choose a strappy sandal that doesn’t add a lot of “visual weight,” you could also opt for a black, cognac or colored sandal.

Jude Connally Mirabella Dress // sandals

This formula works beautifully for vacation dresses or casual outings. But it can also work for dressier occasions if you choose the sandal carefully.

Tabby midi dress (C/O) // sandals// bag // sunglasses // bracelet// earrings// similar necklace (see original blog post for details)

That’s why it’s smart to have some more casual sandals and some that are a little dressier, maybe with a heel.

Trending Polo Top with Ankle Pants/Jeans

Keep your classic outfits looking current by wearing modern elements. One of the most current looking garments that’s also a classic is a polo top.

So this spring opt for a colored top like a polo or Johnny collar instead of a basic t-shirt whenever possible. Wear one over ankle length jeans or pants and add stylish shoes – you’ve got a great spring outfit!

Thanks so much for stopping in for a little style inspiration today. If you are a regular here you know that I’ve been reusing photos from older blog posts, and you may have seen all of these before. Keep in mind that I spent a week and a half away from my photographer (my husband!). I’ll have fresh outfits for you next week. Have a great weekend!

Blessed for My Day

I think many of us are very familiar with Joshua’s proclamation to, “choose for yourselves today whom you will serve,…but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” But it wasn’t until I was reading the entire chapter 24 of Joshua this morning I noticed what came BEFORE this proclamation. Before Joshua died he rallied the people of Israel and reminded them of God’s calling and care of their people throughout the generations. He walked them step by step through hundreds of years of history with God, reminding them of His blessings and provisions.

Today we have the opportunity to do that same thing with our grown children. They may have forgotten – or never even known – how God has blessed our families in the past. But we can’t fault them for that if we don’t occasionally remind them. Orally reminding our families of God’s provision is commanded over and over in Scripture. Let’s make sure we are doing that, especially on occasions such as Easter.

“But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” ~ Joshua 24:15

xoxo, Kay

  1. Thanks for your post. I enjoy seeing photos on repeat (occasionally) because it’s a good reminder that an outfit may “work” for several reasons.
My two favorite formulas are 2 over 1 & column + completer piece. I learned both of these from you.

  2. Spring is so hard to dress for. It’s going to be 80 here in Illinois today – but low 60’s and rainy on Easter. Thanks for your different outfit formulas.

  3. I just love the J Jill linen shirt and tank combo! I think it will be a perfect addition to my spring/summer wardrobe. I like having the long sleeved shirt in the summer when the AC is just too cold.

  4. Our warmer spring days are just around the corner, here on Canada’s west coast. Your ideas have me looking forward to wardrobe adjustments. While a lighter look and feel is appealing, I’m partial to the topping layer and am collecting a couple linen button up shirts, sheer bloues and gauze shrugs.

  5. I love outfit formulas! It allows you to get dressed in a hurry and still look like you put effort into your outfit! My new favorite formula is to double the color on top. Thank you for your continued inspiration!

  6. I’ve begun doing the double on top and also monochromatic looks. With monochromatic, I will either top with my white or blue denim jacket. It looks very put together and thoughtful. Rerunning pics is not an issue for me. It just visually reinforces your point. Happy Easter Kay! HE is risen!

  7. Thank you for giving us some great Spring ideas without completer pieces. This will give me great ideas for how to dress in our warm climate.

  8. Such pretty colors in this post. I’m seeing so much yellow this year. It’s not a color I’m typically drawn to, but this season it’s getting my attention. I’m also loving lavender.

  9. I love doubling up my top color. Of all the tips you featured, I probably do that the most. 🙂

  10. I just ordered the black and white blouse this morning and got a great deal! I received the khaki Levi’s jacket yesterday and I will definitely keep it! Thank you for all of your great advice about fashion, I also look forward to reading Blessed for My Day at the end of your blog.

  11. I don’t mind that the outfits are redos they are all so pretty. I agree that we all need to be aware of our blessings.

  12. What a needed reminder in your BFMD!!! Thank you Kay!
And no need to apologize! We always need fashion reminders, too, especially of your helpful outfit formulas! I’ve been doing more doubling up on top colors…so easy!

  13. I enjoyed the throwback photos from last year! Your Veronica Beard sky blue miller jacket paired with its matching blue tank looks fabulous! I appreciate the tip to buy the same color shirt as the blazer. Happy Easter!

  14. So many good ideas / reminders! Love Cognac with black/white, actually with just about everything! Learned that from your great posts:) Monochromatic is a “go to” as is the doubling up on top. Gosh I just love J. McLaughlin, shoes are beautiful! I’m 5’2 and just can’t embrace ankle pants as I think they chops my legs off and make them look even shorter – I feel the same way about bookending. Is it just me? I’ve watched petite style YouTube video and they all say to use both; so yes, it IS just me! Thank you for all you do for us and Happy Easter!

  15. I love all the looks in this post but especially the idea of doubling up color on top. Using the same color tee or tank and jacket or shirt really pulls the look together. Love it!
