Spring Shoes (before you’re ready for sandals)

Spring is a great time to go a little lighter with our footwear. But many of us I am not quite ready to bare my feet. (I’m scheduling a day for a pedicure pronto!) So let’s check out the spring shoes we might need in our wardrobe pre-sandals.

Spring Shoes (Before You're Ready for Sandals)

You absolutely do not need all of these shoes in your wardrobe. But you’ll probably want at least three or more of the categories I’m sharing, in order for your wardrobe to function seamlessly this spring.

Also, while I stuck to neutrals for the most part in my illustration here, many of these favorites are available in other pretty spring colors, as well as animal prints and textures. So be sure to click through the links if you’re at all interested in the shoes. You may love what you find.

Shoes before Sandals

One more thing. I tried to select shoes in a variety of price points for this post. Of course, you generally get what you pay for. But, like me, you probably like to splurge on some styles, spend wisely on others and save a bundle on the trendier shoes you wear the least.

#1 – Sneakers

I hadn’t really intended to begin with the most casual shoes, but before I knew it that was how I had numbered the graphic. Ha! So we shall start with sneakers.

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker in Dusty Blue Leather

I recently picked up these Ecco Soft 7 Sneakers in Dusty Blue Leather and they are amazingly comfortable right out of the box. Yes, these are a bit pricey. I had a substantial gift card to put towards them. But if you’re traveling or standing on your feet a good bit, these are a wonderful option. They have built in arch support and padding, are constructed from an ultra-soft leather and fit true to size. Of course they’re available in a number of other colors perfect for spring.

While you don’t necessarily need blue sneakers, I do suggest you have sneakers in your wardrobe that will pair easily with many of your clothes. Sneakers aren’t just for workout wear anymore. In fact, fashion sneakers like these look beautiful and youthful with skirts, jeans, chinos and even some dresses.

#2 – Mules & #3 – Slingbacks

You might want to opt for mules if you feel like other flats are a little too stodgy for you. These easy-to-wear slip-ons are definitely still trending. And they’re available in so many different styles, patterns and colors.

Spring shoes - Mules
Everlane Day Loafer Mule in caramel

I recently ordered the Everlane Day Loafer Mule in caramel and can’t wait to try them. I’ve heard great reviews on these shoes. I did size up a half size as suggested because I’d tried the regular loafers and found them to run small (more on those in a bit).

I also purchased the Sperry Saybrook Slingback Mule in tan suede recently. Readers had been asking about my nude flats that I’d been wearing in try-on posts and I was weary of saying they were sold out. So I wanted to try to find some new neutral colored flats to offer in their stead. These Sperrys are so extremely comfortable right out of the box. They’re true to size and also available in ivory suede, coral pink suede and black.

#4 – Pointy Toe Flats

Pointy toe flats are trending this spring and aren’t we all glad? Well, except you gals who have problems with a narrow toe box. I hear ya! But if you can wear these feminine looking shoes, you’ll have plenty to choose from.

The Steve Madden D’Orsay Flat in taupe croc is a pretty example of a very utilitarian pointy toe flat that will work beautifully with so many things in your wardrobe. I love this neutral color for elongating the leg, whether you’re pairing them with a denim skirt or cropped jeans. But you’ll find many others to choose from in various price points in the shopping widget below.

#5 – Loafers

Maybe I sound like a broken record, but loafers are trending, too. Hahaha! I know some of my readers feel they look too masculine. But remember, menswear inspired fashions are having their day. The trick is to include more feminine elements in your outfit, too, in order to balance out the look.

Everlane’s The Day Loafer in caramel

I’ve heard good things about Everlane’s The Day Loafer. In fact, I ordered a pair and received them. Unfortunately they sent me the wrong color. Fortunately, I had also ordered the wrong size. Definitely size up at least 1/2 size. My usual 9.5 wouldn’t even go on my foot. But the shoe was extremely soft and luxurious, made of Italian leather. Alas, I decided to order the mules (above) instead and not run the risk of the 10s not fitting.

I personally own and love Talbots’ Taylor Laced Driving Moccasins and find them to fit nicely and true to size.

#6 – Ballet Flats

I don’t personally own any ballet flats, but many women enjoy wearing these year round. But they’re especially suitable to a spring wardrobe. These feminine shoes look great with cropped jeans or pants, but they’re also nice with skinny jeans. I’ve veered clear of them because most offer absolutely no support. But that’s not completely true anymore. You’ll find ballet flats from brands such as Vionic, Hush Puppies and Soft Walk that do indeed offer cushion and support.

Remember, many of the shoes in the shopping widget below come in additional colors and patterns.

#7-10 – Pumps

I’ve shown four different examples of pumps in the graphic above and the photos below because I know women have different preferences here.

I think this Naturalizer Banks Slingback Pump is a beautiful option for the woman who prefers or even needs a lower heel and some support. Naturalizers are generally good shoes and this slingback looks like it would function well. and I love the neutral shade, but it’s available in others as well.

Kitten heels are also definitely in style right now. But they’re also just beautiful shoes that endure the test of time. If you can possibly wear any heel at all, this little shoe can truly elevate your look. And my bet is that this Vionic Josie Kitten Heel Pump feels great on the foot. I LOVE my similar Vionic pumps.

If you can tolerate a mid-height heel, all the better. These Jaina Pumps by Sam Edelman also come in leopard print and black. The d’orsay styling makes it look even more feminine and sophisticated.

Finally, for those of you who enjoy wearing high heels, go for it! I prefer wearing pumps in the spring rather than sandals because they give a little extra warmth on those chilly days, but these nude heels will still give light and lift to your spring look.

Of course, you absolutely may wear sandals and other bare toe shoes during the spring. I’m just not ready any time soon to completely bare my feet. But I think the shoes I’ve listed here will provide plenty of styling for most any spring outfit.

Did you notice????

By the way, have you noticed my new do? That is, did you notice that things look a little different around the website? I’m so pleased with the new design. Seeing as how I hadn’t freshened things up since I moved into this space almost two years ago, I thought it was time for a new coat of paint, so to speak. My website designer did a beautiful job arranging things just the way I asked.

Specifically, I told her that many of my readers – like me – have older eyes. Hahaha! And while I wanted the space to look modern and fresh, I also wanted the print to be easy to read. We fixed things like the print size in the comment box, the size of the captions and other mechanical issues, too. Oh, and her husband designed us a new logo! It’s at the top of the page. Don’t you love it???

Please take the time to look around a little today and let me know what you think. (You can head back to the home page here.) I’ll be absolutely thrilled if everything is to your liking. But I also want to know if there is something illegible or hard to navigate. So don’t hesitate to contact me if you see something amiss.

Blessed for My Day

To bring God glory is simply to show the world a correct estimate or picture of who He is. To glorify Him is to reveal Him as He truly is to those around us. One of the ways we do that is simply by obeying Him, allowing Him to call the shots in our lives.

Today we have the opportunity to follow in Jesus’ footsteps simply by finishing the work God gives us to do. That work may be scrubbing toilets or teaching college sophomores to write. Our work may be listening to people or speaking before crowds or writing grants or calculating tax returns. Whatever work God has given you today, may you find joy and satisfaction in doing it to His glory.

I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. ~ John 17:4

Spread the love

  1. I love the bigger font! I didn’t even realize it until I got to the end of your post but it was so easy to read and I didn’t know why! I have always liked your posts because they are factual and not too fluffy but just right! I am even thinking about cutting my hair to your new length. It is so flattering.
I’m not quite as “tailored” as you but I appreciate your classic designs and feel like they are more appropriate to my life style and stage.
P.S. I like my personal emails, they make me smile.

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback Patricia. I’m glad you like the new design. Thanks so much for subscribing. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Happy Friday Kay! The dinner last night sounds so nice. I’ve seen that some churches are making the decision to have on-line services only. Is that a decision that James May have to make? Thank you so much for sharing the ECCO sneakers with arch support!! I am supposed to only wear shoes that have that feature. I am going to check to see if I can find them at DSW for a little less $$. I’m so glad you mentioned how a skin tone color shoe will elongate our legs; I want to add a pair of nice looking sneakers to my shoe collection and have been struggling with the color. While white is a fresh color, it would not be the best choice for me since I do not use fake tan or try to get a tan. And a more neutral color will look better with more of my outfits. Oh, have y’all closed on the AZ house? I sure hope so! Have a beautiful day!

    1. Hi Ginger. Yes, we sold the house in December. Yay! But we’re going to rent another year. We like our rental house well enough for now.

  3. Love your clean looking new website. It is easy to read and looks wonderful. I love, love, love the ECCO Soft Seven sneakers. Be aware if you get one pair you will be back for more colors! I have silver, navy, light blue, gray…you get the idea. But I have bad feet and need arch support. These shoes are the most comfortable for that! I am retired, so casual shoes are the order of each day. I feel very stylish in the Soft Seven, as it is a step up from regular sneakers. Plus, ECCO does run sales frequently. I don’t care if I buy last seasons colors if I’m getting them on sale. The only day I can’t wear my sneakers is with my choir robe on Sunday morning.

    1. Hahaha! I’m chuckling at your mentioning wearing the Eccos with your choir robe! I’m so glad to hear these shoes have served you well. I have so many readers with foot issues. I hope they read your comment. Did you see that I wore them in yesterday’s post too? Love that blue! Thanks for sharing Elizabeth.

  4. Kay, congratulations on 2 years of blogging! I have been following you almost from the beginning, and you are a favorite! I love classics also, and I have similar coloring to yours. I love your new haircut and website. I have been looking at Ecco shoes and love Sperry’s. I love comfort and casual fashion. Keep up the great work…..I look forward to your blog every day! Stay healthy!!

    1. Thanks so much for your encouraging words, Dawn. It’s been a great two years and I’m looking forward to more. I really appreciate faithful readers like you. Have a lovely weekend!

  5. Happy Anniversary, Kay! I enjoy receiving your daily blog. You do a great job with all the fashion pics, stories, and Blessed For My Day. Blessings to you and your family!

  6. Happy Blog Anniversary! The update looks great, Kay! I appreciate the larger font because I don’t have very good eyesight and I tend to look at the internet from my smaller iPhone 8. I enjoy your fashion and personal posts. Keep up the good work. My husband is now working from home and as a “retired stay at home mom” ?, I am somewhat self quarantining at home. I’m 62 but have no underlying conditions, and in good health/physical shape. Your (and others) fashion blog are a nice distraction from all the scary news. Wishing good health to you and your family, and to all of us. ?
