Today is Mimi Monday! Since I receive so many questions from other grandmothers about what to wear when spending a busy, active day with the grandkids, I thought I’d share some ideas today. But the outfit I’m sharing today isn’t just for Mimis or Grandmas or Nanas, of course. This is an easy-going spring outfit that looks modern and stylish, but also relaxed and comfortable.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

In my daily emails I always take Mondays to feature a few items that may be of particular interest to grandmothers. Sometimes those items are for the grandchildren themselves, and other days the items are geared to the grandmothers. I call it Mimi Monday because I’m Mimi to my little Hannah and I’m sharing my finds. But of course those items are usually of interest to an even wider audience. You can actually shop most of my Mimi Monday finds in my Mimi Mondays Shop. I’m adding to it all the time.

What to Wear for a Day with the Grandkids in Spring

I think the keys to choosing what to wear for a day with the grandkids is keeping your outfit comfortable, weather-appropriate and a little modern. Remember, even grannies can be stylish! No, your grandchildren don’t care if you are dressed to the nines, nor do you need to be. But you’ll feel more confident alongside the young mommies at the park or birthday party or t-ball game if you are wearing something that feels stylish and current. Because this is a fashion blog, I’m assuming you showed up here wanting to look at least a little fashionable, so that’s the angle we’re taking here.

Comfortable but Current Casual Pants
utility barrel pants (TTS) // similar loafer option at a more economical price

I’ve started the outfit with comfortable but current casual pants. These trending sagebrush green utility barrel pants are constructed in 98% organic cotton and 2% Elastane for ease of movement. They’re machine washable and dryable, although I would lay mine flat to air dry. They’re already under $100, but today only they are marked down 25%. They come in other colors and fit true to size; I’m wearing my usual 10 very comfortably.

Comfortable but Current T-shirt
graphic t-shirt in the pattern sketched (TTS) (Use code KAY15 for 15% off / Also in PLUS sizes!) // similar belt // necklace // large hoop earrings // small huggie earrings // small link bracelet // larger paperclip bracelet // ring

I topped the barrel pants with a fun graphic t-shirt that looks feminine and cheerful, but also modern and a little edgy. This tee is also available in plus sizes, and they do have other graphic prints. It runs true to size; I’m wearing a medium. You can use code KAY15 for 15% off the tee!

Modern Black Jacket for Everyday

Don’t forget your jacket! We all know that at this time of year the weather can change on a dime. And when you’re spending a day with the grandkids you want to be ready for anything. I’m loving the modern look of this black short anorak jacket. It fits very roomy, but I’d still say it’s true to size. I’m wearing a large because that’s what my measurements and usual size 10 call for. I can easily wear this modern jacket into the fall, so I want to be able to wear it over chunky sweaters and sweatshirts, too.

Short Anorak in Black

The short anorak jacket has a detachable hood, front flap pockets and a back vent to keep you feeling fresh in the humidity. I especially appreciate that it has both zip and snap closures. The jacket is a beautiful, functional blend of organic cotton and recycled nylon. You can machine wash and dry the jacket. It comes in two other colors, but that red sells out fast!

Of course, you can always swap in sneakers with absolutely every outfit. Right now I’m loving my Keds BlissWalk slip-on sneakers. You can use code KAYBLISSWALK30 for a short time to get 30% off of those. But another footwear option besides the loafers I wore above would be slip-on sandals. I loved my cognac crossover sandals so much I purchased them this year in black.

These sandals don’t have loads of cushion or arch support. But if you’re looking for buttery soft, easy to slip on and go and a great price (under $75 today only!), these are you shoes! Here’s a final look at the outfit with those sandals.

I think this is a fun example of a modern Mimi Monday outfit for spring. But again, the keys to getting dressed for a day with the grandkids are to consider the weather, keep it comfortable and functional, but also reach for something modern and stylish. That leaves this simple outfit formula wide open for interpretation.

I created three outfit style boards for what to wear to a grandkid’s sporting event this spring, and I shared them in my daily email today. 1. This outfit looks so comfortable yet smart. Loving the sage green color of those pants – perfect with o many other colors for spring.

  2. Unless your grandchild is an adult, sneakers would be the most practical choice for a day with a grandchild. I like your top!

    1. I agree! Think grass, dirt, concrete or gravel underfoot, and so on. On that same vein, I’d wear a outfit similar to Kay’s if I were taking the grandkids to the aquarium, a movie, or the science museum—in other words, for a quieter and less active time. But to the park or playground, or if the activity involves paint, glue, or glitter, I would definitely wear something that is easily washable (such as dark-wash jeans with a thrifted shirt that I wouldn’t miss if it got irreparably damaged).

    2. LOL! I didn’t wear sneakers every day as a mom, so I don’t think they’re always necessary for mimis either. 😊 Like I said, I think we have to take all sorts of things into consideration. I didn’t really say this outfit was for just outdoors or for young children. What about a trip to the library or a day at home playing games? I love wearing sneakers, too, but I don’t think they’re always necessary. Thanks for reading.

  3. Love that short modern rain jacket. So stylish. Not sure if I’d take XS or SM. Like you it’s nice to have room later for sweaters and sweatshirts. My Springs can be cool too here in Oregon. I haven’t ordered from this company so will check out their return policy. We just got back from visiting our grands who live just over 4 hours away. I missed them dearly and had a great Easter week with them. I had to rest up after returning home. lol They have so much energy.

    1. They have easy returns fortunately. But I do find that if you use their size guides and check the reviews you can usually gauge the sizing pretty well. I’m so glad you had a nice Easter with your family. How wonderful!

  4. Kay, I love today’s Mimi Monday outfit. You are filling my Pinterest board with great combinations, giving me ways to coordinate what I already own, as well as adding to my “watch for” list. I’m “Glammie” to seven grandchildren ranging from 7 to 18. My days are blessed with soccer, baseball, gymnastic meets and choir concerts, often several the same day. Some times I’m stuck with what to wear because the weather can go from scorching hot under the sun to drenched and windblown under an umbrella. I’d love if you could include some additional outfits for watching indoor activities. Thanks so much, your posts are not only a daily treat, but are so useful that I classify them as education!

    1. Thanks for sharing, Connie. I love that, Glammie! So fun. I’m not sure I’d change things up a whole lot for indoor activities. But I can work on that for another time. Thanks for reading along! 😊

      1. LOL. I don’t think I’ve missed others. Oh, I didn’t put one in the Talbots favorites post because it was a bonus post.

    1. Oops! I completely missed it today. I was up until 1 a.m. last night editing this week’s YouTube video, so I was somewhat in a fog as I wrote this today. Thanks so much for keeping me on my toes!

  5. I have fourteen grandkids so this blogpost really resonated with me. I love the jackets as it is still quite cool here in Wisconsin.

    1. What a blessing! Yes, we’re still having a good bit of cool weather here, too. And we could have another really cold day hit out of the blue!

      1. So true. I’m originally from the south (Georgia and South Carolina) so I know the full extremes we can have! Today started out 65 but it went down to 55 in two hours. LOL.

  6. That was great Kay! I’m so glad you style these clothes for us on a daily basis because to be honest with you, I would never even consider some of your choices if I only saw it the way it was styled in the catalog/online. Take the anorak jacket. It’s adorable! I love the style and look. It looked great with everything you had on. But if I only saw it only in the pictures online, I would have never in a million years considered it. The photos online don’t do it justice. It actually makes the jacket look unappealing and frumpy. So thank you for all the heavy lifting you do to present all this to us in a real setting worn by real people!

    1. Hahaha! I’m so glad to be of help. Did you see the red jacket? Adorable. But it keeps selling out. Thanks for sharing. 😊

  7. I wore green utility pants in the same shade of green today when I ran errands. It’s too warm for a jacket though so I just wore a T-shirt. I like the jacket. I agree with the other reader who said she would never consider it just looking at it on the website. I find that to be true for me with many items. They seem more real to see them on bloggers.

    1. I’m so glad to help you out in that way. It is quite difficult to tell how an item will look in real life sometimes. YOu’d probably be surprised at how much time I have to spend scouting things out. I often zoom in on the fabric, look for photos of other people wearing the garment and look through all of the colors so I can get a better feel for a garment. It takes quite a while, but I love doing it for this community. 😊

  8. Perfect outfit for an active day with the grandchildren. As we grandma’s know, when they are young most of your play time is on the ground, and the hardest part is getting back up, 😆 so ease of movement is essential. I have been blessed with a grandson and two granddaughters so far, and loving each and every one so much!

  9. This is exactly the type of outfit I wear for the majority of my days! I spend lots of time with the grands and other casual activities. I need comfort and the casual to go to the playground or get on the floor and play. But I still want to look put together. Thanks for the great outfit ideas!

  10. I’m Nana to four very active grandchildren who are all involved in sports and many other activities. At almost 74 I try to be as involved as I can in their lives. When I was in my thirties raising two children. I think the only pair of sneakers I owned were those I wore for exercise walking; I could walk miles across athletic fields in flip flops or loafers. However, nowadays, my feet are not as cushioned and sneakers are a definite must for most of the kid’s activities. A cross body bag is also top of the list to keep hands free. Of course, when I attend their concerts and the musical theater one girl is involved in, I can ditch the sneakers and opt for more fashionable shoes!

  11. Thanks Kay for the inspiration! I’m a new grandma and I love the outfits especially the T-shirt! I love T-shirts that are a little more elevated than a plain one!

  12. Love this casual look! I just ordered the utility pants for something different than jeans. Thanks for showing outfits like this and letting us know about the sales. 😊

  13. A perfect outfit. Suitable for nearly all occasions in my casual lifestyle as a Grandmother of nearly grown Grandchildren.

  14. Love your outfit! I’m a new grandma too so I’m here for all of the outfit suggestions! I agree washable items are best

  15. I spend a lot of time with my 7 year old granddaughter exploring the world. The other day she told me that I was old but not “really old”. Lol! I have to believe that I am not seen as “really old” by her is because of the way I dress. Thank you for your suggestions along this line.

  16. I’m so thrilled to become a grandma next month-even better I get to watch my granddaughter a couple days a week while her mama works. So I really appreciate the focus of today’s post. Taking it one step further-how can I look stylish when I wear team gear when attending a grandchild’s (or any) sporting event ?

  17. Great post! How thoughtful of you to feature what to wear with our grandchildren! I appreciate you including jackets as well, creating a complete look. I’m checking out some of these pieces you have recommended! 😊

  18. You are so sweet and helpful! I appreciate your advise as I improve my dated wardrobe over the next few years. I love the Bible verses as well!
