Planning Valentine’s Day Fun

Gift Ideas

January 22, 2020

Hello there! I’m so glad you dropped in for this special Valentine’s Day Fun post. That red letter day will be here in less than a month and if we don’t think ahead a little we’ll likely be scrambling for ideas and a suitable gift. So I thought I’d plan out a perfect Valentine’s Day scenario for you and you can simply pick and choose which elements fit your taste, budget and romantic inclinations.

I think one of my favorite Valentine’s Days was just a few years ago when James and I decided to take a bag of KFC chicken and all the fixin’s for a picnic followed by a hike. Of course, that’s when we were living in southern Arizona, so the weather cooperated with our plans beautifully. But with a little forethought we can certainly plan something just as enjoyable this year.

So I’ve spent the past hour or so dreaming a little and imagining that perfect date for us, ahem, older couples. As emptynesters we don’t necessarily have to jump on this calendared romantic holiday quite like we used to. But still, gals, I think it’s nice to put in a little effort and make this day a sweet one for you and your love.

Here are a few suggestions with the items pictured in the graphic above and below.

1 // First let’s get you dressed. I think this red blazer is such a classic and you can style it so many ways for Valentine’s Day and beyond. It runs true to size and is constructed of a medium weight stretch cotton twill that moves with you and flatters your female silhouette.

2 // To keep your look contemporary and fresh, why not wear that red blazer over this fun but also fairly classic sweatshirt. Because it’s by the same brand as the blazer, I’m betting it runs true to size, too.

3 // Don’t forget to spray on a pretty scent if you and your guy are okay with fragrance. I’m wearing this Lancome La Vie est Belle these days and get compliments on it constantly. I spray just a bit at the breast bone and a little on the inside of my elbows or wrists, whichever are exposed.

4 // A little red nail polish would be a festive touch, too. You know I love the OPI Infinite Shine system for home manicures. And OPI has some great shades in the Infinite Shine polish. You can’t go wrong with Big Apple Red (pictured), We Seafood and Eat It lobster red or An Affair in Red Square. Don’t those names just crack you up?

5 // Let’s get your guy dressed up a little, too. You could gift him this half zip cotton and cashmere pullover. It’s available in several nice shades.

6 // Or if he’s the even more casual sort, he might like this red zip up hoodie by Hanes. And yes, it’s available in lots of other great colors if he just won’t wear the color of the day. Hahaha!

Now, let’s get the party started!

7 // One option is to stay in and prepare an extra special dinner for two. Since you probably always prepare meals for two, you’ll want to make this one something you haven’t had before. Find a new recipe or two or six in this Date Night Cookbook. The author has provided theme and execution ideas for special couples’ meals, but she also has interesting sounding recipes like Couple’s Kebabs, Sweethearts’ Caramel Pears, Tipsy Orange Salad and, ahem, Under-the-Covers Pancakes.

8 // Another option, of course, is dining out. Go ahead and purchase this gift card full of great restaurant options and, when you whip it out to pay after the meal, your husband will feel like it’s a real treat!

9 // Remember that picnic James and I enjoyed on that favorite Valentine’s Day? You could eat outside, too, if the weather permits. I love this picnic basket for adults.

10 // As your special meal comes to a close, surprise your man with a ring! That’s right! Give your guy a second wedding band that he can wear when he’s doing all those manly things like tinkering with the car. A tungsten wedding band is inexpensive, but it’s also one of the most durable metals you can buy. Plus, it’s really contemporary looking!

That evening…

Hahaha! I promise, I’m keeping this rated G!

Come home that evening to enjoy a gift or two that you’ve given yourselves as a couple.

11 // Maybe it’s time to invest a little in one of those Nespresso coffee makers that you see everyone using. Truly, if you’re a coffee connoisseur, you’re going to love the ease and the exquisite flavor of Nespresso. Can’t drink caffeine at night? They do make decaffeinated capsules.

12 // Pull out these sweet couple mugs to use with your Nespresso or with a cup of your favorite herbals teas. Honestly I don’t like a lot of the couple mugs out there. I find that most of them are a little snarky. But these are adorable!

13 // If you did a good job of dropping hints, you’ll be able to enjoy these chocolate covered strawberries he gave you that morning!

14 // You’ll have had such a good time celebrating Valentine’s Day together, you’ll want to start planning your next date. Use this sweet Date Deck to help you plan the excursion, meal and conversation topics. I forgot to include the photo for this beautiful, soft Kennebunk Bliss Plush Throw, but it would be great to cuddle up in together while sipping your beverages and planning that next outing.

15 // Wouldn’t it be nice to have this pretty wooden heart shaped planter full of succulents sitting on your coffee table? This is one of those gifts that keeps on giving.

16 // I think Valentine’s Day is a great time to buy new sheets for your bed. These Mellani 1800 count bed sheets are all the rave among bloggers right now. Evidently they are a-maze-ing. So I’ve ordered the blue paisley! They’re such a great price, you could order some for every bed in your home!

17 // As your day winds down, you could pull out your new his and hers wireless Fem earbuds from Sudio and sync them with your devices. I was gifted a set of Fem white earbuds recently and I just love the way they fit so nicely in my ears. And the sound quality is really pretty amazing. They’re perfect for Facetiming with your kids, watching your favorite YouTube videos (mine are coming soon!) or listening to your favorite music or audio books in quiet privacy.

Sudio has even given me a special 15% discount to pass on to my readers. Use code DFMD15 in checkout to receive your discount. And through February 14th, Sudio is giving customers another 10% off with the purchase of two products or more. And everyone gets a free crossbody pouch to hold your earbuds. #gifted #ad

18 // Finally, just in case your guy still isn’t feeling the love, you can give him these UGG Scuff Slippers to put beside the bed and try out in the morning. He’s going to love the warm, cozy shearling lining and the suede uppers. But I bet he’ll especially like that he can just slip them on so easily.

Blessed for My Day

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

Spread the love

  1. Great post Kay! Are the earbuds compatible with Apple devices? We normally don’t do anything special for Valentines Day, but the earbuds is a gift both of us could use. We do buy a little something for the neighbor kids that adopted us as their grandparents. Both of us do have red tops that we can wear now and later, and I have several heart necklaces and earrings. Thank you for putting this post together!!
