Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023

Is it getting harder? Not necessarily to memorize or meditate on God’s Word, but to stay consistent and invested? Keep in mind that the enemy of your soul does not want you to focus on the Truth; he’s the father of lies, the deceiver and the evil one. Let’s press on so that we can reap the harvest we have begun to plant in the fertile ground of our hearts and minds.

Hurting World

This past week we were once again reminded that we are living in a hurting and broken world. I’m sure that, like me, you have experienced a full range of emotions from grief to rage to fear to frustration. Worst of all, I’ve had moments when I’ve felt defeated, like all is lost and there is no hope for this world.

Maybe you, like me, wonder how in the world our kids will be able to raise their children in this tormented world. May you look around and see desperation and hate and vitriol and immorality winning the day, and you long for simpler times…or so they seemed.

Nehemiah 4:14

That’s why I’ve chosen Nehemiah 4:14 for my next memory verse. I want to remind myself daily that all is not lost, God is still in control, He still has a purpose for the Church to be here (or we wouldn’t be here) and that I need to be a spreader of hope and courage, not despair and grief.

I want to be a woman who continues to fight for her family, including those to come, and who gives others around me courage and hope to press on, too.

Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023 (7)

When we engage in conversations this month with other adults or young people who are feeling fearful about the future, let’s step up to the plate with words of truth, hope, grace and courage. Let’s have Nehemiah 4:14 in our hearts and minds so that we can speak these inspiring words with conviction.

    Thanks for the inspiration on this Palm Sunday! It indeed has been a troubling week and like you, I’m deeply concerned about the future of our grandchildren. Today, I have chosen s short but meaningful scripture.

  3. My verse from now through 4/15 is Nehemiah 4:14,
    When I saw their fear, I stood and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
    I love how brave, resourceful, and faithful Nehemiah was, and I pray we can be as he was then in the troubles of our own times.

  5. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    This is the most famous verse in the Bible, but particularly relevant as we go into Holy Week. God’s love endures forever and his grace is an amazing gift. I thank him every day for his Love for me.

  9. Thank you, Kay, for the reminder to rely on our faith in these troubling times. Even in desperate times I look for glimmers of hope. They are there. God provides them. Be observant and you will hear or see them.

    I chose the following scripture. Titus 3: 4-7
    But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of rebirth and the renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, being justified by His grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

  12. Hi all .. I have a prayer request and I can’t think of a better group than Kay and her followers here to ask to please say a little prayer for my brother-in-law George. He had lung cancer surgery 10 days ago and the surgery and recovery is not going well. My family and I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks and God bless you all.

That was a favorite verse when my daughter was in middle and high school.   33. So much anger, so much suffering. It is hard to believe the evil that some people let into their heats.
    And then we have destruction that appears out of nowhere into people’s lives like that of the tornadoes in Rolling Fork, Mississippi and in my state of Arkansas on Friday. I am so very grateful that my mother, brother-in-law, and my husband’s aunt were narrowly missed by the twister, and it is heartening to see how the people of Little Rock/North Little Rock, Wynne, AR and Mississippi are pulling together to clean up and take care of each other. I am certain the same is happening in other storm ravaged places in Iowa and Illinois.
    I think the following verse is a good one for both Holy Week and the gratitude I want to express for the deliverance of my family from danger.

    ” 10 He has delivered us from such a terrible death, and He will deliver us. We have put our hope in Him that He will deliver us again, 11 while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gift that came to us through the prayers of many. “

  36. I very much like the verse you chose, Kay, as it resonates with my concerns as well. I’ve been working through Psalm 91 which brings comfort to my soul in these days we are living in. For the next two weeks I’ll be memorizing verses 9-12

    “ for you have made the Lord, my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place. No evil will be for you, nor will any plague come near your tent. For he will give his angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, that you do not strike your foot against a stone.”

    1. I was reading through everyone’s verses and yours stood out to me. I turned this into a prayer for my son and his family who have had numerous trials over the past year. Thank you for sharing this verse. 🙂

I was so afraid I would have to talk to my sweet third grade students about what happened, but thankfully their parents kept them innocent of this latest tragedy. They wanted to tell me about their birthday parties and upcoming visits with their grandparents. So bittersweet when I think of those sweet babies in Nashville who probably were looking forward to similar events on their last day on earth. Ugh, sorry, it’s just so wrong!

    Anyway, my verse for this time is one that always brings me comfort when I’m worried: Philippians 4: 6-7

    Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present
    your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    1. Trusting in the unseen….

      When bad things happen to good people, I always want to say “It will be OK”, and I know it sounds so trite and weak to people in great suffering. We have just had devastating family news and are all heartsick over it. I have again offered up this advice of Faith.

    I am challenged when I think about the contrast of righteous and victorious with lowly and riding on a donkey.

    Continuing on the same theme I’ve chosen, which is to have at ready memory Bible verses to witness to those who would hear the Good News of salvation: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8&9 (ESV)
    A good reminder to me also– it is nothing I have done to earn salvation or to keep it… solely by the work and grace of God who opened my eyes and heart to even realize that I needed more in life. He was that “more.”

  73. As I reflect on the next passage that I have chosen, I paused to remember that all my prayers for strength, courage, help, and grace are gifts. I don’t have to pray “hard”. I only have to accept that God is in charge and I need to let go and let God. So to finish the Philippians passage I began a few weeks ago, I will mediate, be still, and allow the Lord’s message to joyfully soak in. God’s Will be done….

    She is more precious than rubies, nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand: in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.

    I love this section especially the part about peace.

    “The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. ”
    Unlike the reference to the unknown fear in v.4, this fear is a respect of a known one. Reverence and proper respect of our Heavenly Father and His holy ways ensures a protective encampment and deliverance. So if I want His surrounding protection and deliverence from evil, I need to have the proper respect for God, by recognizing who He is, and what He is capable of.
    I have found it helps me get into the proper mindset by starting any communication with Him stating some of His names and attributes, and thanking Him for specific things He has done.
    And what an endless supply of things to be thankful for!

Meditating on this verse each day will help remind me to speak kindly and only when necessary.
