Do you ever feel like your emotions are scattered with the cares of life, like the seeds of a dandelion? Sometimes I don’t quite know where to land on an issue – whether it’s personal or in the news – because I feel so many things about it. Our emotions can be both flighty and weighty, tossing us about and pushing us around so that we can’t make wise decisions, move forward with confidence or choose godly alliances. So what’s a girl to do?
Some days my emotions push me around. Can you relate? Not only do my fickle feelings prevent me from landing squarely on the truth about something, but they can also distract me from the Source of my security and purpose. Sorting out the emotions feels somewhat like chasing lightening bugs in the dusk.
But recently I found a prayer in the Bible that reflects those same emotions. And the psalmist asked God a simple question I had never thought to ask Him.
I love that phrase, “Unite my heart to fear Your name.” In other words, the psalmist is confessing that his emotions are everywhere because he’s concerned about too many things. Maybe he fears the future, regrets the past, feels unsafe in his surroundings, doubts his capabilities or distrusts the people around him. Those feelings are pushing him here and there and everywhere. Instead, he longs to have his heart united to fear only one thing, the Lord Himself.
So that is my prayer, too. I want to be a woman who is not pushed around by her emotions or fears. I want to aim to please only One, and I want that purpose to serve as my compass throughout the day.
I look forward to reading the comments and hearing about your chosen scripture passage for the next two weeks, too. Press on, dear sister. There’s no shame in falling behind, but I’d hate for you to miss out on the blessings in store for those who get back in there and finish the course. God is at work in your life. And you will reap a harvest if you are faithful to keep planting the seed.
