Scripture Meditation & Memory at DFMD 2023

Do you ever feel like your emotions are scattered with the cares of life, like the seeds of a dandelion? Sometimes I don’t quite know where to land on an issue – whether it’s personal or in the news – because I feel so many things about it. Our emotions can be both flighty and weighty, tossing us about and pushing us around so that we can’t make wise decisions, move forward with confidence or choose godly alliances. So what’s a girl to do?

Some days my emotions push me around. Can you relate? Not only do my fickle feelings prevent me from landing squarely on the truth about something, but they can also distract me from the Source of my security and purpose. Sorting out the emotions feels somewhat like chasing lightening bugs in the dusk.

But recently I found a prayer in the Bible that reflects those same emotions. And the psalmist asked God a simple question I had never thought to ask Him.

I love that phrase, “Unite my heart to fear Your name.” In other words, the psalmist is confessing that his emotions are everywhere because he’s concerned about too many things. Maybe he fears the future, regrets the past, feels unsafe in his surroundings, doubts his capabilities or distrusts the people around him. Those feelings are pushing him here and there and everywhere. Instead, he longs to have his heart united to fear only one thing, the Lord Himself.

So that is my prayer, too. I want to be a woman who is not pushed around by her emotions or fears. I want to aim to please only One, and I want that purpose to serve as my compass throughout the day.

There’s no shame in falling behind, but I’d hate for you to miss out on the blessings in store for those who get back in there and finish the course. God is at work in your life.     I have picked the following scripture:
    Psalm 56:8

    You keep count of my tossing and put my tears in Your bottle.

    Both my mother (97) and my daughter (40) are really struggling. And boy, I’ve been tossing. Praying that he is with all of us, all the time.

    Psalm 33:11 “Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.” I also will include this short verse as I seem to be the only one in my famliy expectantly awaiting the return of Jesus-I think it is near, but no one else does in my family.

    Isaiah 49:23 “For they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.”

    Kay, your scripture also hits home as lately my emotions have been spiraling. As my heart keeps trying to repair itself and make room for whatever comes next to shake its core, I must remember to remain focused on my One Truest Love and His forever healing power within my heart. All in His time, I wait.

        I can’t begin to thank you enough. I know your prayers and warm kindness have helped me these past weeks more than you can imagine. The intense moments of pain from this unwelcomed grief are so incredibly unpredictable and still so overwhelming, However, I will keep reminding myself that God has sent me Angels such as yourself to help me through❤ Blessing and hugs to you my friend.

      In 2021 my mother passed away and 6 days later my sister passed away. They lived in a different state than I do, yet in the busyness of those days He gathered other believers I knew only by name to us to carry us. God has been my strength, my peace, my comfort, and sustainer through difficult times. He is no respecter of persons. What He has done for me He will do for you.
      So I’m praying you won’t have to make room for something that will shake you to the core, but you will experience the peace that surpasses all understanding and joy unspeakable and full of glory.🙏❤️

Surely it was through the Grace of God that He brought you to a place of peace. Thank you for carrying me this time around, as I seek His comfort and understanding.         1. Helena when we lose a loved one , it is so hard sometimes to even just get up in the morning and work through our usual routines, the pain and grief seems insurmountable at times . Always talk about her and encourage others to do also . Take good care of yourself and Love yourself . Do lovely little things to keep her close and always in your heart and life . And God will do the rest , he will carry you and help heal you ❤️Xx

          1. I so appreciate this, Kym. She is the first one I think of in the morning and my days right now are just filled with so much sadness. It was all too sudden and will take time to process. I guess now I need to let my faith in God get me past the pain, anger, irritability, and extreme sadness. And like you said, i need to keep talking about the incredible loveliness of her spirit and never let it go. Thank you for being another angel who has lifted me up today. Helena , this was a practical thing I did when a sudden loss of my loved one hit me , like you say grief also comes with anger and lots of irritable feelings as well as feeling like you are in a black hole you cannot climb out of . As I’m not usually an angry or irritable person and I didn’t want to hurt or alarm my loved ones . Find a room or a place in nature thats a ‘Safe’ place and by this I mean where people won’t get alarmed or think you are being attacked . Then I used to just scream at the top of my voice and scream until I cried , punching something soft like a pillow helped me to , I did this quite a few times . A little bit later into my grief I tried Meditation and still do this now , it took me quite a few goes to feel ‘right’ about it and my first few times I used to come back to awakening crying , as it can sometimes bring back old memories good and bad . I love to do this now though after my prayers and lots of times I have had answers to my questions , its a nice gentle start to my day . Lots of Loving hugs to you Helena and just know there are always people out there who care 🤗💕Xx

  24. I am watching the cross fit games this weekend. As a member and participant at a local cross fit gym I can really appreciate the efforts that these athletes make both physically, mentally and emotionally. It has prompted me to remember and think on Psalm 139: 13-14:
    For you created my inmost being;
    You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
    I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful I know that full well.
    In my 63 year old body I will never be as fast or lift as heavy or be as flexible as these athletes. But my body is still capable of so many things and still has lots of power. I can thank God for my body, care for it and appreciate all the human body is able to do by God’s design for it.

  45. I am going back to school tomorrow for our teacher PD week. I have been thinking about all the planning that our administrators have been doing in preparation for us teachers and all the prep work teachers have to do before the students arrive in classes next week here in Arkansas. With all the planning on my brain, I chose a verse about just that.

    “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.” Proverbs 16.9

    I am a big planner. I have checklists upon checklists of steps for all parts of my life, not just lesson plans. My verse is like Kay’s in that I should pay attention to what God’s way is, his steps, not mine.

    This reminds me that the first and foremost person to look to for my hope and assurance is the Lord. He will guide me into the truth.

    I continue with memorizing Psalm 40. Taken in context David needs God to deliver him from evil and from his own iniquities. God is faithful to do such a thing! In him we can hope and trust.

    My verse for today is about Strength, power by Hope in God. Romans 15:13
    May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  64. We’ve been married nearly 50 years and with 3 children have been further blessed with 16 grandchildren…kinda funny since we were told we couldn’t have children. A set of quadruplets added to our joy but I find I have a full time role to pray and trust the Lord for each one. “As for Me, says the Lord, this is my covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth nor from the mouth of your descendants nor from the mouth of your descendants descendants, says the Lord, from this time and forevermore.” Household salvation!

    Other versions of this passage say stop striving, stop fighting, be calm….. surrender. I love stopping and just mediating on these perspectives. .

  71. I’m a bit late but I definitely continuing with this challenge!I love the scripture you chose Kay and it’s perfect for what you are talking about with emotions., I may choose that in the future. I chose Phillipians 4:4-7 because this will help me right now.

    Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

I’ve been guilty of a “not so positive” attitude so I’ve chosen Philippians 4:8 as my verse for the next couple of weeks. Thank you for helping to hold me accountable. Philippians 4:8 says, Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.     We’re currently doing the Jen Wilkin study “Abide” on 1/2/3 John. It has been so good, and I have been looking for my memory verses from these books. I think about my own lack of confidence and how it can make me timid or self-conscious. And even spiritually, if I don’t make a concerted, intentionality toward “ABIDING IN HIM”, I can have a lack of confidence and shrink back from being a bold proclaimer!! Confidence comes from “knowing”…. and I want to make knowing Him my first priority! Certainly I have no trouble being bold as I share with others about my grandsons! I know them! I know what I’m talking about, and thus I feel total confidence in sharing! I never shrink back! I want to be that way with others and actually with Christ Himself…. coming forth with boldness rather than fear!

  99. As I was reading Ps 40, I was struck by the phrase “tender mercies.” Although my situation is frustrating & annoying, it is not discouraging depressing, or devastating. Yet I want to run to my Abba, begging for His tender mercies. Since a high-wind storm blew through day before yesterday we have had no power or water. Not life-shaking. Tender mercies are what I need from God right now – the mercies of peace and purpose in this situation. If His mercy should extend to restoring our power I would be most grateful. 😊
    Do I really realize the great God of creation is tender towards me?! His mercy shows in temperatures in the 70s. I don’t need to be concerned about pipes freezing. I must stop to notice the tender mercies He shows every day, even if our power isn’t restored for another 3 days or more. Another facet of our God to explore and admire amidst the everyday challenges of life.

  100. I too am feeling “pushed around” and overwhelmed by emotions and the cares of life. So the verse I’m meditating on these next two weeks is, Matt 11:28-30.

    Psalm 86… I think I will make it a ‘bonus’ verse for me. This morning I am submitting two verses I have chosen for weeks 14 and 15 … catching up again.
    This morning I am also feeling so grateful that so many years ago my life was made new in Christ, and I am praying this morning for family members who so desperately need to surrender to Him… I am reminded that not only do we become a new creation in Christ, but His mercies are new every morning..
    2Corinthians 5:17. “ Therefor if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, the old is gone, the new has come “
    Lamentations 3: 22 -23. “ The steadfast love of the Lord ever ceases, his mercies never come to an end, they are new every morning. great is his faithfulness.

  102. I can relate to your sentiments about emotions pulling you in different directions. We have spent a lot of time traveling with family this summer and my emotions have gone from highs to lows and back again.
    My verse this week revolves around family.

  105. I hear so much boasting in the media and from people around me. I was struck by this exhortation in Jeremiah 9:23-24 (ESV):

    My goal is to understand and know the Lord and to delight in steadfast love, justice and righteousness as He does.
