We’ll be taking a deep dive into the upcoming fall fashion trends in a couple of weeks. But this week at Dressed for My Day we’re focusing on early fall outfits. For me that means things I can wear now and later. In fact, I comfortably wore the outfit I’m featuring here this past Sunday when it was steamy and hot. It’s loaded with four fall trends to wear now and later.

Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

Hopefully you saw this week’s new YouTube video, in which I highlighted over a dozen wardrobe essentials that will help make easing into fall effortless and fun. I actually gave you a preview of this outfit in that video because it does indeed include four of those wardrobe essentials. And they’re all so on trend.

Watch the video HERE on YouTube.

The Year of the Trouser

We’ll undoubtedly talk more about this in our DFMD Fall 2024 Fashion Trend Week (coming August 19-23), but we’re already well into the year of the trouser. And the trendiest (and most classic!) trouser is the high-waist, full length, relaxed silhouette trouser, made famous by the likes of Katherine Hepburn and Grace Kelly once upon a time.

My Vince wide leg trousers are a beautiful and lightweight 84% Tencel® lyocell, 9% nylon and 7% wool blend, so I can wear them now comfortably. I imagine I’ll wear them into October and then put them away until next spring. And yes, I do expect this silhouette to still be very in style next year. It’s a classic having a moment, and when that happens (think leopard print a few years back) the trend tends to last a while.

While you can style the trending wide leg trousers with heels, loafers and booties, the most contemporary and fresh way to wear them is with a great pair of sneakers. More on that in a bit. But first, I found so many great examples of the trending trouser available to wear now, so I had to share them with you. I’ve included the brand and price in the shopping widget below, but please remember that sale prices don’t always show up. And most pants come in an assortment of colors and sizes.

Sweater Vests Prevail

This is nothing new, but sweater vests continue to trend this fall. Do you like wearing them? Some can be worn alone or with tees underneath, while others look best one way or the other. You kind of have to play around with them to determine the best style for you.

Sweater Vests

The nice thing about sweater vests is that most of them are lightweight and cool enough to wear now. In fact, some are on sale because they’ve been available through the summer. I found a number of them available and have shared below. Again, sale prices don’t always show up and some come in other colors, too. In fact, my sweater vest comes in military olive and a Montauk stripe (and it’s 25% off).

Belt It

If you prefer not to tuck your tops at all, you certainly don’t have to belt your pants. But with the advent of higher rises in pants as well as the fuller leg silhouettes we’re seeing more women choose to at least front-tuck their tops for definition. Thus the belt has become all the more popular in recent years.

Belt It

Maybe you haven’t belted your shorts or cropped pants much during the summer. But as fall approaches it’s time to pull out your belts again. This year we’re seeing lots of deep chocolate brown in leather accessories, but I also anticipate the continued popularity of cognac belts, shoes and bags.

Belt It

My belt is a fairly inexpensive one from Nordstrom. And I’ve collected other options in this same cognac as well as other tones of brown and black in the shopping widget below. They say that a designer belt is a great investment, but I haven’t made that leap yet. If you have a designer belt you love, share in the comments. I’d love to hear about it.

Finish with Sneakers

I dread the day when I wake up and hear that sneakers are no longer in vogue. Since I began blogging in 2018, they’ve been gaining traction in popularity every year. Can they keep up that pace? Who knows. But for 2024 we’re still seeing the sneaker trend going strong.

Sneakers are Still On Trend

I purchased my sand biscuit combo Unity sneakers by Paul Green in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale when they were 30% off. I also got them in white. I love the way the sand biscuit combo bookends this look with the beige sweater. They have a pretty blend of cream leather, beige suede and metallic. Most importantly, I love that these sneakers have a 1 1/2″ platform, so I can have my trousers hemmed to accommodate them and still wear those pants with 1-2″ heels.

I found so many more great sneakers for you below, in a full range of prices.

Blessed for My Day

Sometimes my husband or one of my kids will vent their frustrations to me about something they’ve experienced. I have to confess, my initial response has often been to try to talk them down and temper their words. They sound so extreme. Sometimes they spill out their hurt and confusion along with things they’re “going to say” to so-and-so or, worse yet, do in the heat of the moment.

But I’ve finally learned that my husband or child has no more intention of saying those things or fulfilling those threats than I do jumping out of a plane. They’re just letting off steam to someone they consider to be a safe sounding board. And when I reprove them for their harsh tone or words I only frustrate them more. Sometimes it truly is best just to listen patiently while the other person vents. This is a good time to be “quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger.” I can be a safe place for them to let off steam so they can begin to see things more clearly as God shines a little light on the situation.

“Do you intend to reprove my words,
When the words of one in despair belong to the wind? ~ Job 6:26

  1. Good post, Kay – Thanks! Was moved by your Blessed For My Day section. Was not familiar with this scripture from Job. Read the whole thing to my husband, hoping to encourage him to ‘LET ME VENT” more without trying to talk me down as you said.

Im ready to have more of your Inner Beauty posts and videos. You do them so well and I don’t see or read others doing them at all! The Inner Beauty posts are what got me to subscribe initially.
Thanks for being a lovely addition to so many lives!

    1. Thanks for sharing that. I’m considering reviving my weekly inner beauty posts in 2025. And I’m thinking about doing an inner beauty/aging gracefully video soon too.

      1. I’m glad to hear that you’re considering to do the inner beauty posts again next year. I was always blessed by them. I like the idea of adding aging gracefully to them.

  2. Never thought of that passage from Job in the way you detailed it in your BFMD, but what an eye opener. I’m usually the one who needs to vent, and most often, family, friends or church members have tried to temper my words. That frustrates me, yet all I want to do is verbalize all my thoughts and emotions so I can sort through and make sense of them, so I can respond wisely. Maybe that’s why when people vent around me, I just let them blow off their steam until they settle down; I don’t want to frustrate them as others have frustrated me. 🙂 Anyhow, love the outfit. I just purchased my first sleeveless sweater, and love it. I have several pair of relaxed trousers and love them… and yes have worn them with a cute pair of kicks. 🙂 I don’t belt anything though, I have a very short waist and belts just look funny on me. Have a blessed day!

  3. Kay,
You have a devoted group of followers which includes me! 💕 You keep that sneaker trend going and we will follow right along! 😉 You’ve taught us to wear what we feel good and confident in and we will! Thanks and have a great day!

  4. Very nice looks. Classic trousers will always be my “signature” along with belts. And yes, I have a real weakness for designer belts in particular. I collect them, been gifted a few and have quite the collection since belts have been part of my signature look since my 20’s. I just think they elevate an outfit like no other accessory really can. I do try to only wear ONE designer piece at a time in any given outfit so if I’m wearing a designer belt (that is a logo or obvious designer belt) I pare back my bag with no obvious logo and vice versa. So I have bags and belts in the same colors that are either obviously designer or just more on the “quiet luxury” side so I can choose which accessory I’d rather have be the “star” of my outfit. I just find having more than one obviously designer item goes quickly from a classy outfit to just gaudy.
Thanks for all the great inspiration! Been getting more compliments on how I dress since I started following you.

  5. Hi Kay! Love the pants! Do you mind sharing what size you ordered? Haven’t ordered Vince pants/trousers before.

    1. Yes, I sized up to a 12. They’re a little roomy, but you don’t want this style of trouser to be snug.

  6. Kay I love your looks for less, I was able to order my grey tee for my fall wardrobe thru the LTK app…so perfect…thank you. Linda

  7. Hi. I’m definitely on the white-sneaker trend. Could you share tips for keeping them clean? How frequently? Thanks?

  8. Thank you for the Blessed For My Day section. Very helpful scripture and reminder to be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. I too am faced with similar situation almost daily and have an immediate reaction to try to have my spouse look at it differently instead of just letting him vent. After almost 40 years of knowing his reactions, he will not say or do what he says in the heat of the moment! I wrote the scripture from Job done on post-it note and placed it on my desk as a reminder! 🙂 Have a blessed day!

  9. Hi Kay I’m loving the sweater vests and the loose classic pants , has always been my favourite trouser shape especially with a belt , always loved Katherine Hepburns style and in later years she wore the Nike trainer with her pants . Thank you for all your hard work and like the other ladies mentioned I love your videos too on inner beauty/aging gracefully , you are such a good advocate for it too ❤️. I loved your Devotional so so true and I too hadn’t seen that particular scripture , what I have learned when listening to a friend or family member ( yes I’m the listener in my family ) I ask them first if they want advice or just to get it off their shoulders , then I know just what to do 💞

  10. Wow, love your devotional thoughts, but this one about someone venting to you was a help to me. We are in the ministry and this has often happened to my husband. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who has gone through this🙂
