Welcome to Fall Trends Week 2024 at Dressed for My Day. While we’re still soaking up the sun and beauty of the last days of summer, it’s time to start planning our fall wardrobe strategically. I’m a big advocate of planning your wardrobe around your personal style aesthetic, lifestyle and preferences, but I also think it’s smart to be abreast of the trends for the upcoming season so you can thoughtfully choose a few modern touches to add to your wardrobe. Remember, looking contemporary is one of the best ways for women over 50 to look our most youthful and vibrant, too. So we’re kicking off this week of fall trends by exploring the trending colors of fall/winter 2024.

Where do these “trending colors” come from exactly?

Each year the Pantone Color Institute™ creates a color palette based on the colors they expect to see in the New York Fashion Week shows for the upcoming seasons. These predictions are based on insider knowledge they have of the collections being prepared by the top designers. This past February, in anticipation of Fall Fashion Week in New York, Pantone released the following color palette.

If you’re reading this blog post on your cell phone or tablet, you should be able to take a screen shot of the graphic above or below for future reference. But remember, there’s nothing magic about these colors; they’re just the ones Pantone expected to see in February at the Fall Fashion Week in New York. That said, we are indeed already seeing some of these colors come to life in recently released fall collections at our favorite retailers.

We can expect to see even more of these shades in the weeks and months to come. But no one needs to feel compelled to wear all or even most of them. I suggest you look through the new trending colors for fall/winter 2024 and strategically choose the ones that best suit you. Look for the colors you love, that bring you joy. And definitely plan to wear the colors among these trending shades that suit your coloring or work well with what is already in your closet. Then let other women enjoy wearing the others.

Top 5 that we are already seeing in our favorite retailers…

I’ve spent a lot of time perusing some of our favorite retailers in search of glimpses of these trending colors for fall 2024. And I’ve also focused on the hues that, in my experience, women over 50 tend to enjoy wearing.

Italian Plum

This past spring I really enjoyed infusing my wardrobe with Pastel Lilac, one of the Pantone trending colors for Spring/Summer 2024. And now I’m excited to stay on the trajectory with the deeper, more pigmented Italian Plum.

Italian Plum is a deep, pigmented purple that borders wine or burgundy. It looks rich and elegant, but also earthy and rustic. I expect garments and accessories in this shade to look beautiful with denim, but also also navy, deep brown and even ivory or grey. Here are some of the examples I’ve seen thus far in colors similar to Italian Plum at our favorite retailers. You can even shop these by clicking on the photo.

Shades of Greens- Aventurine & Fern

Green has been trending the last couple of years, but this year the shades that we can expect to see are even more earthy and pigmented. Specifically, expect to see colors like Pantone’s Aventurine, “a mineral-based tone imbued with a hidden richness,” and Fern, a leafy green similar to an artichoke or Spanish moss.

But really you could wear any color of earthy or deeply pigmented green and feel confident with your choices. I have light green eyes, so I love wearing green. Women with blue or brown eyes often find that green works nicely for them, too.

Baritone Blue

Really we could just say that navy is trending. You may have heard a little about this in my YouTube video this past week. If not, check it out below.

See more about how to wear the trending navy HERE.

Many women opt for navy instead of black, so this color may already be in your wardrobe. You can wear it as a neutral or highlight it as one of your signature colors.

But specifically, the navy that is so on trend is a deep, midnight blue. It’s highly saturated and a little moody. Especially in fabrications of silk, satin, corduroy, wool and cashmere, this dark color is bound to look rich and elegant.

White Swan

White is trending this year in the form of of Lucent White, a bright and stark white. But you can also expect to see a lot of creamy, rich White Swan. I suspect that many women over 50 will feel more comfortable in this soft shade, depending on skin tone and hair color.

Gray- Moonstruck & Dark Dull Gray

I’m also excited to see that gray is on trend again this year. We can expect to see colors similar to Moonstruck, “a shadowy grey that lives behind the clouds, and a solid and dense grey that Pantone calls simply Dark Dull Gray.

Personally I don’t think there’s anything dull about grey. It can looks so rich and rustic, especially when worn as a background for more vibrant colors.

Of course I only highlighted a few of the colors slated to trend from the Pantone report. I personally am looking forward to wearing more navy or Baritone Blue and Italian Plum this fall and winter. But I’ll also be incorporating colors similar to Scarlet Smile ( a berry red), Winter Sky (an icy blue/grey) and Raw Umber (an earthy brown) into my wardrobe. What about you? Which of these trending colors piqued your interest?

Blessed for My Day

Life is precious; there is no doubt about that. We know it is fragile, too. But still we must hold life loosely in our hands, offering it up to the Lord daily and releasing it to Him. That’s hard for me. While I don’t necessarily hold my own life too tightly in my hands, I tend to cling to the people I love with a nervous grip. “Be careful,” I often say. “Drive safe!”

Lately I’ve been convicted that instead of telling my loved ones to be careful so much I should tell them more frequently to “have fun!” I should trust the Lord with those I love and help them to trust Him as well. And in the end I must realize that God holds them in His loving hands anyhow. If I trust God to care for them, I can help them to relax in His love and live with more passion and excitement for each day He grants.

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. ~ Philippians 1:21

  1. Italian Plum! I love burgundy and this is just a step away. I think it would look great with the also trending gray. Thanks Kay!

  2. I love seeing the expected trending colors for the up coming season. Usually I find several I like, but this time I am having a hard time finding ones I think will look good on me. Although I should say that I like grey and navy but see them as my helper colors. I am someone who likes a pop of color with outfits, so I was looking for…….. mmmmm, how to put it into words?! I like colors with pink hues in it, I don’t wear earth tones at least close to my face. Last year I did buy chocolate cord pants, because I love chocolate!

  3. I bought a really nice sweater from Kohl’s which is Navy which is edged in white stripes at the cuffs and bottom. It is 60% cotton and 40% rayon. It is a darker navy. In the spring I purchased a darker navy blouse which is embroidered with limited white floral on it from Chico’s. I entend to wear both with some dark navy slacks. I also have some a lacy teal blouse in my closet which I will wear with my either light or dark grey slacks. I also have numerous white blouses that I will wear this fall.

  4. Navy is my go to neutral. Love it paired with black, grey and a rich cranberry red. I also wear a fantastic pair of black joggers but not your typical “sweatpants” look…a more elevated type of jogger. I love pairing them with a rich red sweater or my newly purchased winter white cozy sweater.
I continue to love waking up with your blogs and weekly video. Ive even started tucking my t shirts into my jeans and feeling very comfortable with it.

  5. Hi Kay and DFMD friends. Do we have to pick just one! I really love the Fern pantsuit…..I am a redhead so I especially love blues and greens.
And I work in Healthcare and I just ordered some Plum scrubs so even working in the medical field, I will be “on trend”!

  6. Hi Kay! I’m the same way-always worried about my children’s safety. I am trying to change. It makes them afraid. Great advice!

I will try to add more brown in my wardrobe if I see something I like. I think I look good in that color. Have a great day!

  7. This answer to this question may seem obvious to some, but could you let us know which colors lean warm or cool?

Love that you’re devoting a week to fall trends and colors

    1. I’d say Tomato Cream, Golden Palm, and Red Orange are warm colors. Also Buckthorn Brown. Scarlet Smile, Baritone Blue and Italian Plum will probably be easier for those who prefer cool shades. The others could be neutrals depending on the undertones in the particular garment or accessory. And they say teal or turquoise is almost a universal color, so Aventurine should work well for anyone who wants to wear it.

  8. I love the adventurine and fern green. The creamy off white (white swan) also. Those will be the best for me. I could also wear the orange-red, but I tend to prefer pumpkin orange or coral. 🙂

  9. I’m very new to your blog and only 2nd time to comment, but wanted to tell you I love your devotion today. Its so true. I tell my adult kids all the time to “be careful” and I love what you changed it to and I’m going to try to remember to do that too. Thank you for sharing your faith. God is good and HE does have our families in HIS hands. We have to learn to let them go.

  10. Love the message. I tend to be like you about my loved ones too. I hope I can find dark or chocolate brown. Plum is a color I might try if it’s in the right shade.

  11. Lovely devotional and good reminder for me. Love the trending fall colors…I am an ”autumn“, so I could wear most all of them, except grey.

  12. The trending colors for Fall/Winter 2024 are so pretty! I’m especially excited about trying burgundy this season. Do you have any tips for styling this color in casual looks?
