Styling the Modern Sweater Dress for the Classic Woman Over 50

Often here at Dressed for My Day I share tips to help us style our classic pieces in a more modern way. If we want to look current but still wear our classics, it’s important to give them a modern twist. But today I’m sharing a more modern sweater dress that will freshen up your winter closet. Let’s style this current silhouette for the classic woman over 50.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. What makes this moss green sweater dress modern? Right now we’re seeing a shift to softer structure, drapey definition. That means a dress like this one that drapes the body but doesn’t have a lot of definition is very current. The sweater dress fits true to size. I purchased the large and am wearing it, but I think the medium would have worked nicely.

This moss green dress actually comes in a shorter version as well. So if that length is more suitable for your body, it would be an even more modern choice. The current way to wear shorter sweater dresses is with sheer tights, whether they are colored or skin-toned, and boots. Or you can wear them without hosiery with boots, flats or heels.

You could certainly leave this sweater dress unbelted for a very modern look. But I think most women over 50 are going to prefer to belt it, even if loosely. Adding a belt will help to define the shape as well as your proportions. This particular belt is one of my favorite purchases of 2025 because it’s so easy to adjust to fit. There are no holes, just an easy slide adjustment. I like to double it into a “knot” when I wear it with dresses like this. I’m wearing the M/L and it fits just right for this type of styling.

For a mockneck like this, I prefer not to wear a necklace. They just don’t seem to lay quite right with this neckline. So I opt for larger earrings. These baby knot earrings have been serving me so nicely. I like that the post is located in the middle of the earring rather than the top, so they don’t appear to be pulling my ear lobe down. Know how I mean? Also they’re not especially heavy, so they really don’t cause my ears to droop at all.

This modern sweater dress does feature loose bracelet length sleeves. The website says they are 3/4 length sleeves, but I beg to differ. At any rate, they’re a nice length to accessorize with a chunky bangle or statement bracelet.

Of course knee high boots are very on trend right now. And you don’t have to wear heeled boots to get a nice effect. On another day (as shown below) I did wear my heeled Ally boots with a different belt. But on this day I opted for my cognac riding boots for a slightly more casual effect. Mine are from last year or the even the year before, I’m not sure. But you’ll find similar boots of the same brand here.

I included the How I Really Dressed for My Day photo above so you could see how I styled it on a different day. I sized up in that beautiful Ralph Lauren belt because I’d read that it looks best if all of the medallions are spaced evenly, and the only way to make that happen is to size up. Sure enough, that worked nicely.

Do you ever feel stumped when it comes to selecting a coat to wear with your winter dress? I sure do. But having a classic black wrap coat in my closet this year has really solved that dilemma in a beautiful way. Mine is almost sold out (I picked it up in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in July), but they have it here in a beautiful brown which would work well, too.

Generally you want your coat to be as long as or even a little longer than your skirt or dress. But don’t let that keep you from wearing a beautiful sweater dress this winter. We all have to work with what is in our wardrobe, and building a wardrobe you love is a process that takes time and intention. Stick with me this year and I’m going to help you do just that.

Thanks so much for stopping in. I’ve included additional sweater dress options in the shopping widget below, which also contains the pieces available from my look.

Blessed for My Day

At the beginning of the year we often make resolutions to achieve you goals. But I find this is also an excellent time to evaluate my priorities. When I take a deeper look at what is driving my schedule, my bank account and my decisions, I find what I really prioritize and what has taken a back seat over time.

Today is a good day to consider what you are putting first. If we are aiming for anything less than getting to know our God and serving Him well then we may discover the root of our frustrations and anxieties. Let’s make sure that we begin our days by acknowledging Him and allowing Him to set our agendas. I find that I have less anxiety and fewer missteps if I begin my day reading my Bible and praying. How do you monitor your priorities so they stay in check?

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. ~ Matthew 6:33-34

  1. Well, that did it. I’ve been thinking about this dress since you first featured it, and I had to order it. The green is beautiful, but I went with cranberry because I have the high-contrast “winter” coloring- we’ll see! I don’t think I’ve had a sweater dress since the 80s, when they were short and triangular with those wide padded shoulders!

  2. This green dress is gorgeous and looks lovely on you
I have taken a liking to green lately and just can’t get past it!
    Great post

  3. Love the lovely green sweater dress on you. The fancier, wider belt and heeled boots looked especially nice, although I liked it both ways!

  4. The dress looks so good on you. I like how you accessorized it. I don’t have a sweater dress because it’s not cold enough. The last sweater dress I had, I donated it because it was never cold enough on Sundays when I could wear it. It would be cold during the week and I had nowhere special to go to. We’re having a warm winter. I hope it get colder so I can wear my wool coats. I’m going to take your advice and wear them instead of a puffer jacket.

  5. Yes to the wool coats! Having a weather reprieve this week (40’s). Wore a blue/green/navy Talbots long wool plaid coat yesterday and a shorter red Talbots wool coat today, and got compliments (from a person at the grocery store and also from a friend) on each of the coats. Made me feel just a little more put together. Love my dark puffers, but do nice to have a change.
