While other jacket styles are very on trend this year, nothing will elevate your casual fall look quite like an oversized blazer. And while fitted blazers are still a closet staple in my wardrobe, I’ve learned the value of this more relaxed style since it is especially suited to my more casual lifestyle. Let’s continue our 2025 style series, Styling the Classics…for the Modern Woman with tips for styling the classic oversized blazer for fall.

Today I’m sharing a beautiful brown and grey wool blend blazer from Madewell. It runs true to size and I’m wearing my usual size medium. On the Madewell website they supply you with eight styling ideas for this versatile blazer, so I suggest you check those out for additional ideas.

Choose an Oversized Blazer that Fits

My first tip for styling the classic oversized blazer is make sure you choose one that fits you well. Just because it’s called an “oversized blazer” doesn’t mean it should swallow you. The construction is oversized, but the jacket should still fit you nicely. The jacket won’t be fitted at the waist and it may be a little longer than other jackets. It may feature shoulder pads or slightly extended shoulders. But it should still look like your blazer, not your man’s.
Style the Classic Oversized Blazer with Feminine Touches

An oversized blazer is a menswear inspired piece. So it’s smart to keep your outfit suitably feminine by adding a pretty touch. Here I’ve styled my oversized blazer with an ultra feminine ruffle puff-sleeve top.

This pretty ruffle puff-sleeve top also comes in black and a lovely light blue (pre-order). But this tie-neck shirt or this ruffled button-up top would also make nice feminine touches. Or you could wear a classic button-up shirt and then wear pretty sling-backs as your feminine touch. Wearing a strand of pearls, a pretty brooch or a silk scarf are other ideas.
Style the Classic Oversized Blazer with Jeans

I’ve worn my classic oversized blazer with the Madewell Perfect Vintage wide leg jeans in the Enmore wash. As you can see they are not exceptionally wide; they’re more of a relaxed straight leg. I love Madewell jeans and have worn them for years. I especially enjoy the Perfect Vintage line. I generally size down to a 29 in this particular line. They’re a true blue jean with 99% cotton/1% elastane, and these zipper-fly jeans have a 10 3/4″ rise, 19″ leg opening and 30″ inseam. They come in other washes, too.

I suppose you can wear your oversized blazer with other pants in your closet. In fact, this particular blazer also has a coordinating skirt and trouser available. However, you’ll always look modern and in step if you pair your oversized blazer with equally modern jeans.
Pull Your Blazer Outfit Together with Accessories

Remember, accessories are not just the icing on the cake; they’re the icing that holds the cake together. Coordinate your accessories with the colors and vibe in your oversized blazer to pull the look together. I’ve pulled out the camel coloring in the blazer and repeated it in my suede belt and bag, as well as my leather loafers.

An oversized blazer is a great addition to your wardrobe if you live a fairly casual lifestyle. It elevates your most casual looks effortlessly, so you can step out in confidence.

You can absolutely shop this look through the links above in the captions under the photos. Blessed for My Day
Prayer is the gift of intimate conversation with our Maker. But sometimes I fall into the habit of treating my prayer time like a gripe session where I’m doing all the complaining. Other times my prayer time feels more like I’m sitting on Santa’s lap, running through the list of things I want God to do for me. What about you? How is your prayer time lately? How would you characterize it?
But the Bible makes it clear over and over that prayer is a two-way conversation with God. That means I need to approach Him as One who loves me and knows me intimately. It serves me well to set up this conversation by first spending time reading through His Word. Then I do well to spend some time acknowledging God’s character, His promises and faithfulness to keep them, His ways and His Word. And honestly, after doing those things I’m more likely to desire to simply listen, rather than rattling off my requests. I realize then that God knows, He cares, He’s already at work, He has a plan and doesn’t need me to share my plan with Him. How might you change up your conversations with God so that they feel more like a balanced conversation?
“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.
If you are willing and obedient,
you shall eat the good of the land;
but if you refuse and rebel,
you shall be eaten by the sword;
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” ~ Isaiah 1:18-20
I like the look of the oversized blazer and on you it looks great. I have to be careful with oversized blazers on my 5’3″ frame. I really like this blazer though. What do you think on this point for me? Maybe I can say no? I have so many blazers and have started rotating my Fall ones from Spring ones. Your BFMD gave me pause for thought. Though the Bible says what we want we should ask and we will receive But we shouldn’t treat him like santa clause like you pointed out lol.
It would definitely wear as a longer blazer on you. I’m personally excited about it because mostly I have fitted blazers and I’d been looking for a classic relaxed one. This one fits the bill.
Kay- I dont see the Madewell code on your LTK page. Where is it? thanks
You have to actually go to a post where I’m sharing Madewell, so this one works: https://liketk.it/5mFJU Then you copy the code after you click on an item.
Kay, I’m reading The Charles F. Stanley Life Principles Daily Bible you mentioned a year or so ago and am feeling much edified! Thanks for that.
I’m 4′ 11″ and do better with shorter jackets. I’ve had two lovely wool ones from the UK for years and am determined this is the year I truly utilize them. You’re doing a wonderful job easing me into fall in winter, my favorite seasons. So thanks for that also. Have a lovely weekend.
Love the BFMD. So true. Good reminder. I love a good blazer. Just don’t know which color yet to add.
A blazer is my favorite piece of clothing. It is often still 90 degrees through October where I live, and I can’t wait to wear jeans and a blazer. I’m always on the lookout for lightweight ones for the fall. I’d love it if you could mention or feature lightweight options. Thanks so much for the analysis you give in every blog post. It’s given me so many new options to consider and made me feel both confident and modern.
Hi Connie. This one is actually quite lightweight. I’m wearing it right this minute in fact. Not heavy at all.
I love the plaid blazer from Madewell. I have attempted to order it through your LTK SHOP and when I try to add it to my bag it just keeps spinning. Has anyone else mentioned a problem with the LYK app?
Thanks,
Janis
Not that I know of. That sounds more like a problem with the Madewell website. You have to go through the jacket link in my post to Madewell and add the jacket to your cart on their website. So it sounds like the problem is there. Maybe try again a little later or on a different device.
I love your hair!
Thank you so much. 😊
The blazer and jeans look so nice on you!!! It is a look I think almost anyone can pull off and so good for a casual lifestyle when you need/want to look a little “more.”
Another petite here who will happily admire the look on your statuesque frame! 🙂 And really, that haircut is a major wow!
