I’m so glad that denim skirts have experienced a bit of a resurgence in popularity in the last couple of years. The classic denim skirt never really goes out of style, but recently we’re finding more of them available in our favorite stores as well as a variety of styles. Today I’ve got some tips for styling the classic denim skirt for summer in a modern way.

We’re continuing our 2025 Style Series today with a true summer classic – the denim skirt. You can check out the other blog posts in this year’s style series – Styling the Classics for the Modern Woman – in the top menu by clicking on 2025 STYLE SERIES. Let me know if there are other closet classics you’d like for me to style in modern ways.
Tip #1 – Choose a denim skirt that is truly a classic.
Right now you will find an abundance of different styles of denim skirts available. And if you prefer one of those more trendy silhouettes, enjoy! I think you can invest in one and enjoy wearing it for at least a couple of years without feeling out of step.

However, if you want to be able to keep your denim skirt in your closet for years, I’d go with a more traditional silhouette and style. The classic A-line denim skirt with a button and zip closure, traditional front pockets and belt loops is the one you can wear with confidence year after year, styling it in a way that looks modern for the day.

My denim skirt is from Frank & Eileen, and I do love the classic silhouette and style with the modern touch of a raw edge hemline. The light to mid wash is perfect for summer. It fits true to size; I’m wearing a 30. But I have collected a wide range of styles and price points in other denim skirts in the shopping widget at the end of the post.
Tip #2 – Wear a button-up shirt with your classic denim skirt for summer.

One of the easiest ways to style your classic denim skirt for summer is to wear it with a button-up shirt. They’re comfortable, cool and very on trend at the moment. I have chosen a multicolor floral top from my favorite button-up shirt brand, Frank & Eileen. But I’ve collected so many other options in the shopping widget at the end of the post. I especially like this option from Boden.
Of course, you can certainly wear other tops for an equally modern look with your classic denim skirt. Recently I wore mine with this linen t-shirt and the look was casual and youthful. A graphic tee is another modern option if you want to keep the look casual and effortless.

Tip #3 – Wear a belt with your classic denim skirt for summer.
Adding a belt to your outfit is so on trend right now. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the belt is the top trending accessory at this time. But even when the belt is not having a moment, adding one to your outfit is a good way to elevate your look.

My classic Italian leather belt comes in other colors and textures and fits true to size. For a summer outfit with a denim skirt, I would suggest wearing a fairly narrow belt, nothing more than 1″. I realize that it’s no fun to spend a lot of money on a belt, but if it’s an accessory you think you’ll lean into fairly often it’s worth the investment. This belt is a moderate price for good quality.

Tip #4 – Wear a feminine top with your denim skirt.
Another top option that will keep your denim skirt outfit decidedly feminine is something with a little detail. The orange gauze cotton trim detail blouse I’m wearing is from Me+Em, but I’ve found a few other nice options in the shopping widget, too. I think this color is so fun for the warmer months.

Tip #5 – Complete your denim skirt look with pretty sandals for summer.
You can opt for espadrilles or other closed toe shoes, but I think the most summery look and the most modern choice is sandals. And really anything goes. Here I’ve worn my popular Tory Burch Miller sandals in vintage vachetta, but I have other options in the shopping widget below. Another modern footwear option would be sneakers, which would look especially nice with a t-shirt for a day on your feet.

Tip #6 – Don’t forget to accessorize with jewelry.
I do like to keep my jewelry simple during the summer. But I’m always careful to add at least a few lightweight pieces. They add a little light to your look and signify that you’ve made some effort. And that effort translates as chic and stylish.

My dainty gold necklace is from Penelope. You can use code KAY20 for 20% off this and other fine jewelry there. My other pieces are from Gorjana. They’re lightweight and very versatile.
You can shop my outfits as well as other options in the shopping widget below or through the links above. Operate the shopping widget with the small arrows that appear at the sides in order to scroll to other options.
Thanks so much for dropping in for a little style inspiration. I’d love to hear from you in the comments today. Have a blessed and beautiful summer day!

Blessed for My Day
I value loyalty in a person. When someone sticks beside me through thick and thin, good times and hard, glory and gossip, I am so appreciative. What a blessing to have people who love you enough to stay true when others fail you. By this time in our lives, most of us have experienced our fair share of fair weather friends, but hopefully we can all say that we’ve had true friends and devoted family members, too.
I guess the bigger question is what kind of friend and family member have I been? Let’s pause and ask that hard question of ourselves today. More than likely we have a few regrets over times that we didn’t stick around when we should have. But there’s still room for improvement. We can commit to hear people out, to give grace, to avoid gossip and hearsay, to assume the best instead of the worst and to love to the bitter end. And having that kind of commitment to other people really begins with a heart devoted to the Lord. God values commitment – to Himself and to others. And as we become more like Him we will strive to stay committed to our relationships as well.
Many a man proclaims his own loyalty,
But who can find a trustworthy man?
A righteous man who walks in his integrity—
How blessed are his sons after him. ~ Proverbs 20:6-7
I have collected a few denim skirts over years in different lengths and washes. I even have a great denim mini skirt with a distressed hem that I wear only as a swim suit cover-up!! I am glad the soft, flowy top/blouse is returning. I love wearing those with denim skirts. And the belt is a definite “yes”! Enoy your visit with your granddaughter and her parents! She’s getting older now, and probably into everything! Time to rearrange your rooms a little now! Happy 4th!
Absolutely! Although in the end we’ll just have to “stay on her” every minute. There’s no way to toddler proof my home that quickly. Ha!
Jean skirts have never really been my thing. But boy did you style them beautifully here. LOVED your BFMD. Happy Fourth!
Thank you. That’s very kind of you.
You’re welcome. I’ve come to appreciate more and more how something that may not work for me really works amazing for other women. 🙂
OK, I’ve been influenced, I admit it! I now feel that I really need a denim skirt! Seriously, I have had it on my list, so maybe this is the year. The BFMD is so true – I think we all have regrets about how we did or did not show up – those regrets help us do better when we learn from them. Hope you have a very good holiday weekend.
Hahaha! It’s a great time to get a denim skirt for sure. And it’s a staple most of us can wear three seasons. Have a lovely weekend!
