Styling the Winter Classics Masthead

It’s warming up nicely this week in Cincinnati, but I’m weather wise enough to know that winter is not over. Far from it. Still, since the retailers have been steadily introducing their early spring lines lately, I am starting to turn more of my focus to styling for spring. In fact, in tomorrow’s YouTube video we’ll check out some of the most wearable spring trends and how to incorporate them into your wardrobe. But before we do that, let’s style another winter classic…the black turtleneck sweater.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

Today’s blog post is part of our 2025 style series, Styling the Classics…for the Modern Woman. My goal in these posts is to share outfit formulas and tips to help you style the classics in your closet in a way that feels contemporary, up to date, but still authentic to your personal style and real lifestyle. If you don’t have or prefer to wear a black cashmere turtleneck sweater, you can probably use the same concepts I share here for other similar items in your wardrobe, such as a navy crewneck sweater or grey v-neck.

In three outfits I’m wearing my black cashmere turtleneck sweater from Talbots; however, it is almost completely sold out. It does fit true to size and is a great sweater. I’ve probably had mine several years at least. But, because it is almost sold out, I’ll link to this comparable black turtleneck sweater from Quince for the duration of the post. And you’ll notice that they actually have two options for you: a lightweight cashmere and a signature cashmere.

For our first look I’m styling this winter classic with new medium wash trouser jeans. Of all the blue washes available in jeans, when it comes to pairing with black I prefer a medium wash. To me, the light wash is too great of a contrast with black and the dark wash is too similar. But a pretty mid wash blue jean looks really sharp with a black sweater. This rose lark wash is a new one and it’s going to serve me very well into spring and summer.

It might seem like black accessories would be the obvious choice here. But I think using brown accessories really makes this outfit pop with interest but still look cohesive.

One of my favorite style hacks is to wear the same color or neutral in your top and outerwear. So I added my black quilted puffer jacket. I love the way this mid blue, black and brown ensemble pulls together.

I wore very little jewelry here; just bold gold earrings and a bangle. But you could add a pendant necklace if you like.

Pro Tip: Giving your sweater a front tuck and adding a belt will immediately elevate your outfit exponentially. Don’t rule it out just because you don’t love your figure. Defining your waistline and wearing clothes that fit is so much more attractive than wearing your clothes baggy and with no definition.

Next I styled our winter classic black turtleneck sweater for a chic work look.

wool coat (similar option with a few more sizes and additional options) // black turtleneck sweater // pants // boots (use code KAYBOOTS for $50 off your first pair of Ally boots.) // gloves // purse // belt // earrings // similar sunglasses

Most everything I’m showing in this look, except the accessories, is almost sold out or no longer available. But remember, I’m styling our hero piece with selections from my closet. Hopefully you can duplicate these looks with things from yours, too, if you desire.

I’ve simply worn the black turtleneck sweater over warm wool pants in a soft camel. And this time I have leaned into those black accessories – from my shoulder bag to my gloves, from my belt to my booties – to complete the outfit.

Black and camel (of any shade) is a classic combination. So of course you could flip this outfit and wear a camel sweater with black pants, too. I considered wearing my brown boots here, even tried them on. But they just seemed to class with the pants and distract from the overall look. If I were wearing pumps here instead of booties, I could have worn my nude pumps or black ones equally well. But since I was wearing booties, I think the black, balanced by all the black above, was the right choice.

Again, I love the effects you get doubling up the color or neutral of choice in your sweater and outerwear. You’ll never go wrong with that formula.

Pro Tip: I like to keep several lint rollers around since I wear black so frequently. I keep one in my office (where my mirror is), in a drawer at our front door and in the car. It’s hard to get every bit of fuzz, but I give it a try!

And for our final look (that I’m modeling) I created a column of black by wearing the cashmere turtleneck over black jeans and then topping the duo with a contrasting color coat. A column of black is another one of my favorite style formulas, and you just can’t go wrong with it. But remember, you can get the same effect with any other color that you match above and below, including navy, white, denim blue and any other color you can think of.

Because I did want my outfit to still look interesting when I removed my contrasting camel coat, I did add a pendant necklace to this all black outfit. This particular necklace is adjustable so you can wear it to really any length you desire. And I noticed it is 50% off.

Pro Tip: When creating a column effect, it’s important to wear the same color or neutral neckline to toe under your contrasting coat, jacket or cardigan. The only exception would be if you wore flesh colored shoes or strappy sandals that “disappear” on your foot.

By the way, I could have worn a black belt here, too. But I decided I needed to show at least one outfit with my sweater untucked. Since it fits nicely and close to the body, I think it looks good this way. But if you have a more voluminous sweater you may want to consider tucking. You may have noticed that when all was said and done, I wore my sweater each of three ways in the three outfits: partially tucked, fully tucked and untucked. They all serve a purpose.

Style Boards

Because there are always additional ways to style the classics, I’m providing style boards in this 2025 style series, too. I hope you find them inspirational as you’re putting together outfits during the last weeks of winter.

wool coat // cashmere turtleneck sweater & here (more affordable option) // grey pants // black flats // black bag // sunglasses // earrings // necklace

For the first board, I wanted to combine black and grey. It’s such a classic combination. These grey pants are a beautiful, modern silhouette with a cropped length. So you can wear them now and into the spring. I’ve completed the look with black ballet flats since they will show nicely with the ankle length pants. Such a sharp look! But so feminine, too.

And since we had a look with black jeans and one with blue jeans, I thought we needed a style inspiration board with white jeans. I just got these high-rise, slim fit, wide leg white jeans in and I can tell you they are great jeans, but they run large. I got a 30 and need to size down to a 29. The denim is nice and thick and the silhouette is modern.

I hope you enjoyed a little style inspiration for your remaining winter days today. I’m not sure if I’ll have any more of these posts for winter. I fully intended to. But as is always the case at this point in winter, I find myself needing to prep our wardrobes for spring. We’ll see. If nothing else, I may just do a round-up of stylish winter outfits that I’ve already shared so you’ll have them in one location.

Blessed for My Day

Not only does the good Lord stand ready to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness if we will confess our wrong and return to Him (1 John 1:9), but He also desires to redeem the mess we made along the way and turn it into something useful. Maybe you have experienced a time of waywardness from God in your life, and you know the havoc such rebellion can cause in a life. I sure have and do. While I don’t like to talk about my willful mistakes very much, God has given me occasions here and there to encourage someone who finds themselves in similar circumstances. What a blessing to be able to see God use your worst stuff to do something amazingly beautiful in another person’s life. That’s redemption!

But, as God said in Jeremiah 15:19, in order to effectively share our mistakes and pardons with someone else in a way that truly edifies them and glorifies God, we must first “extract the precious from the worthless.” Most importantly I’ve found that I must focus my testimony of redemption not on what I did, but on what God did and continues to do. Always use your story only to point to Jesus.

Therefore, this is what the Lord says:
“If you return, then I will restore you—
You will stand before Me;
And if you extract the precious from the worthless,
You will become My spokesman. ~ Jeremiah 15:19a

  1. Thank you for your outfit inspirations today, Kay. I find I am really struggling with choosing my daily outfits lately. So, since you offered, YES please put together a post with outfits that you have already styled this winter! That will be so helpful! And sometime will you please explain the process you go through in putting together outfits? Do you start with a top, or a bottom, or shoes, etc. to help you decide what to put together? Again, that will be so helpful! Thank you for all your hard work! I look forward to your post every single day. God bless!

    1. Sharon, I love your question about what item you start with when planning an outfit. I know you didn’t ask me but I was thinking about that. For me, it depends on my mood and/or the weather. For example, if it’s raining I might want to plan an outfit around my duck shoes or another pair waterproof shoes or booties that I have. Sometimes I’ll plan an outfit around an outerwear piece I want to wear that day. If I just want to be comfortable for running errands, I’ll pick a 2 piece set I want to wear that requires little planning other than to decide which sneakers to wear. For more dressed up occasions, sometimes I will plan around a blouse or a pair of shoes I want to wear. Occasionally, I’ve even planned around a certain belt or bag I want to wear.
