Styling a Modern Polo Shirt 3 Ways for Fall

This fall polo shirts and Johnny collars are really trending. These two classic necklines are quite similar in that they both sport collars, but the polo shirt typically features buttons while the Johnny collar does not. I love both because they create a flattering v-neckline while also adding the interest and structure of a soft collar. Today I’m styling a modern polo shirt three ways for fall. I love all three!

The Modern Polo

This modern polo shirt is from Evereve, which generally offers fashions that are basically classic but with very modern vibes and silhouettes. From the brand Design History, this top is listed as the Alexa Henley Pullover. But Henley tops generally feature the button placket without a collar, so I’m not sure why they named it that. Let’s you and I call it a modern polo. How’s that?

What makes this polo modern? I think the dusky beige color, the black trim, the soft ribbed fabric and the slim fit all combine to give this polo a modern vibe. It runs true to size; I’m wearing a medium. The top has lots of stretch in it, and while it is a slim fit, it does not fit tight at all.

with black pants

For the first outfit I paired the modern polo with my favorite black straight leg travel pants from Talbots. Indeed, this pairing would make a great travel outfit for a road trip or air travel. It’s comfortable, but oh so chic. The travel pants run true to size for a very generous, comfortable fit. They feature side zipper pockets and a functional front zipper and snap closure, but also have a forgiving elasticized waistband. They look really sharp. Of course you could recreate the look with other black pants or jeans.

Next I used the modern polo to style my Ann Taylor accordion pleated skirt for fall. I purchased this skirt in January and styled it for winter (here) , spring (in this video) and summer (here). Of course the skirt is no longer available, but this gives you an idea how the modern polo would work with similar skirts you might purchase (such as this one, this one or even this one) or that are already hanging in your closet.

Black Sarah Flint Pumps

I completed the skirt and modern polo with my Sarah Flint black perfect pumps for a more elevated look. But I also tried the combo with my Sarah Flint black ballet flats for another look. I think both work well. Sarah Flint shoes are quite pricey and these were gifted to me, but I have purchased others because they are so extremely comfortable, classic and wellmade. with wide leg jeans

And for my final look with the modern polo I wore it with my Joe’s Mia wide leg jeans (more options here). In fact, I originally purchased this close-fitting modern polo to wear with these wide leg jeans. That’s one of the secrets to wearing the wider leg silhouette: pair it with a closer fitting top.

Modern Polo with Wide Leg Jeans

Wide leg jeans like these Mias that I purchased in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale are very on trend this year. These jeans feature a high waist, full legs from hip to hem and a raw edge hemline. They run true to size with a little bit of stretch in them. And they are in fact 40% off right now with sizes going fast. By the way, I cut an extra inch off of these and I still have to wear heels with them.

Wide Leg Jeans

It’s fun to try new trends like these wide leg jeans, but it’s going to take me a little wear and time to get used to them. I’m so glad I purchased a few close fitting tops to pair with them because having the right top makes all the difference in the world.

Blessed for My Day

Have you ever been in a situation where you just didn’t know what to do? Perhaps you had several options but you struggled to know the path that would yield the best results for all involved? Of course you have! We all have been at those crossroads. At such times we yearn for wisdom. And honestly, we’d love the opportunity to see into the future and know how everything turns out.

The problem comes, I’ve learned, in being more concerned about pleasing all the people involved rather than trying to please the Lord. When I determine to put the other voices and opinions aside…at least temporarily…and listen only to the precepts and principles I learn in God’s Word, the right choice becomes more in focus. It’s as though something shines a little bit of extra light onto the situation and I can actually see more clearly. That’s because I’ve chosen to honor God with my decision rather than try to please people.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. ~ Proverbs 9:10

  1. I was so moved by your introduction to yesterday’s blog.
I enjoy your blog’s fashion information. I very much identify with your style.
But, most of all, you come across as such a genuine, kind, and caring person.
Being concerned about those who may not have had a “good weekend” truly impressed me.
I am happy to follow you and support your business!

  2. All of your posts are so informative and enjoyable. I know this post is focused on the polo top, but I am thinking more about the versatility of the skirt. I’m trying to develop a small wardrobe for more upscale or unique occasions when you don’t want to wear pants. I love how this skirt transcends seasons. Thank you for your thoughtful posts!

  3. Morning, Kay!

I just love your Blessed for My Day posts. Sometimes God has put them so squarely in front of me with perfect timing. I’ve tried to figure out a way to save them for future reference and reminding, but haven’t figured that out. Do you have them anyway saved? What an amazing book these would make. Should you write one I would preorder it today :-). I just received all your books from Amazon and look forward to enjoying those with a cup of tea or coffee in my prayer space. Thank you for all you do. God Bless.

    1. Hi Mary Ellen, I do not have any way of saving them to share with you. Nor do I have a book. But that’s an idea I will tuck away. Thanks so much for sharing. I’m glad you enjoy them.
