You absolutely can shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale for great bargains on wardrobe staples at lower price points. But I do also like to use this annual pre-fall sale to splurge on a few higher ticket items that I won’t be able to get later in the season at these prices. The way I see it, since I’m buying these splurge items before the fall season even begins, I’ll be able to get even more wear out of them than I would if I were to wait for them to go on sale later, thus lowering the price-per-wear. Still, I’m selective about my bigger ticket purchases and I do select them strategically. Interested? I’m sharing my #NSale 2023 favorite splurges and my reasoning behind them.

Let’s Talk About Splurges
Obviously splurges are highly subjective. What constitutes a splurge for me may be a drop in the bucket for you and vice versa. But here we’re really talking about anything you might spend a little more for than you normally would. And generally I think we decide to splurge on something because it “promises a little more.”
We might choose to splurge on something because it simply promises an intangible joy. But as a rule I only allow myself to splurge on items in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that promise either:
- longevity in my wardrobe (think coats and handbags)
- great comfort (think shoes and boots)
- excellent versatility (think button up shirts, sweaters & accessories in my colors)
- more style (think beautiful dresses, skirts or even accessories)
- real benefit (think beauty products)
- or daily wearability (think quality undergarments, sleepwear or jeans)
Before You Splurge
Even if something fits into the categories above, I do ask myself some serious questions before I take the plunge. And this is one of the reasons I love the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale preview: it gives me the time to make calculated, thoughtful purchases rather than going “sale crazy.” Amen?
After putting the “candy” that caught my eye into my Wish List, I look back over that list and ask these questions about each item:
- Does it help me achieve my style goals for the season?
As beautiful as the metallic check tweed jacket from Veronica Beard is, it doesn’t really play into my more relaxed, casual wardrobe for this season of my life. But the Allsaints Dalby leather biker jacket in moonlight pink feels a little more like my speed. It will play nicely with my fall and winter wardrobe of mostly jeans and black pants. Plus, I’ve decided I probably have enough Veronica Beard blazers for now. I love them and highly recommend them, but for me this is the year of the leather jacket.
- Does it fill a hole in my closet or is it a duplicate of something I already own?
I love, love, love the Reiss camel longline belted coat (and someone needs to snag that thing!), but I already have a similar coat. No, mine doesn’t look like the same quality as that Reiss coat, but I’m going to stick with what I have for now. Instead, I’m going to fill the hole I have in my closet for a finger-length wrap coat in a soft grey with the Avec Les Filles cocoon belted coat.
- Is it in the colors I’ll be wearing this season? And does this shade of the color flatter me?
This year deep, smoky reds are really trending. So I plan to participate in that trend big time. I love red and I get lots of compliments when I wear most any of the cooler shades. And I’m so excited that my favorite summer skirt has been duplicated in this stunning plum wine red smocked waist midi skirt. So yes, that midi skirt and the coordinating Vince short sleeve wool & alpaca blend sweater are both on my personal wish list.
- Will I wear it or use it frequently enough and long enough to justify spending this amount on it?
I almost always purchase a couple of pairs of new premium denim jeans in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. These are some of the best prices I’ll get on premium denim, so I take advantage of it. And since I wear jeans frequently, I don’t mind spending a little more for really good jeans. And yes, premium denim feels and wear very different from lower price points. It’s just the truth. That doesn’t mean you can’t find good jeans at lower prices. For instance, I love my Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans, priced more moderately. But for the most comfort and great style, I have really high hopes for these Mother ankle straight leg jeans.
- Does the quality live up to the price?
Of course this is a question I can only answer once I receive the product. The good news is that shipping and returns are free in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (and always at Nordstrom!). So that means I can risk splurging on something that I’m not quite sure about and can return it if it doesn’t deliver on its promises.
That said, I’ve been using this large container of Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Wash for right at a year and I LOVE IT. Yes, that $72 bottle of facial wash, valued at $95, lasted all year in my shower for morning face washes. So I KNOW it lives up to its price. I have just enough left in my bottle to get me to the day the new one comes in!

Below are some of my favorite splurges in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. These are items I’ve found while scouring the sale, but you may have found other worthy items, too. I won’t be purchasing all of these. Boy howdy! But I guess they’re sort of the “I would if I could” items.

We often talk about the things we see God doing around us, perhaps even in other people. But did you know God is doing great things in you? In my life, God has brought healing where once there was deep hurt. He has provided strength and soundness of mind in difficult emergency situations. And He has always provided enough for our family to not just survive, but thrive. While sometimes I may feel like God is working more around me or in other people’s lives, I need to reflect occasionally on how He has worked within me.
Today I encourage you to pause and think of how God has provided for you in difficult times, how He has changed you from the woman you were ten, fifteen years ago to the woman you are today, how He has planted good things into the soil of your heart and woven His wisdom into the fabric of your mind. Give God the glory, glory. And know that He is doing great things around you, but also in you.
