Guess what today is? It’s my mom’s 90th birthday! 🥳🎉✨ I flew into Georgia earlier this week so I could celebrate this momentous milestone with her and my dad, along with a few other family members. I’m beyond tickled to be here with her for this fine day. Later today the three of us are going to see the new Downton Abbey movie and then my brother and sister-in-law will join us for pizza out. Tomorrow more of the family is gathering at my aunt’s home for a real birthday dinner, so we’ll just continue the fun into the weekend. Anyhoo! I just couldn’t start today’s daily outfit post without sharing that big news with you, dear reader. I know that many of you are big fans of my mom’s since you saw her in this Talbots blog post a couple of years ago. But before I embarrass her any further, let’s check out how I really dressed for my day this past week.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.
I like to focus on why I wore what I wore and how I put my looks together in these weekly posts. So I may not call out each item shown. You’ll find links to anything that is available in the captions under the photos. I’ll also share fit information there IF the garment doesn’t fit true to size (TTS). I try to be transparent about gifting; gifted items are indicated with a C/O beside them, meaning they were given to me “courtesy of” that brand. Finally, I’m 5’8″ and about 160 pounds, so I normally wear a misses 10. I have even proportions and an hourglass shape.
What I Wore Labor Day Weekend Friday
Did you have to do a double take when you saw me wearing linen in that header graphic? Hahaha! Yeah, I went ahead and included some outfits from the past two weeks since I hadn’t had the opportunity to share them yet. There’s nothing wrong with wearing linen past Labor Day, by the way, especially in warmer climates. But I’ll undoubtedly be putting mine away when I get back to Ohio in a couple of weeks.

The outfit above is one I wore out to do a little “blog research,” also known as strolling through the mall and ducking into all of our favorite stores. This was just before Labor Day, but I’d wearing this simple pairing again tomorrow since the weather has warmed back up a little. You just can’t beat a pair of chic lightweight trousers and a white button-up shirt for a sharp but effortless look.
What I Wore Labor Day Weekend Saturday
That Saturday I decided to get at least one more wear out of my white linen getaway set from Frank & Eileen. I have thoroughly enjoyed wearing this pants and sleeveless shirt combo this summer. I wish I’d purchased it earlier and I could have gotten even more wear out of it. But I know I’ll wear it again next year.

Even though it wasn’t even yet the end of the summer, it was fairly cool that day. So I made the look a little more autumnal by adding a sweater over my shoulders and wearing chunky cognac sandals (use code KAY10 for 10% off).
What I Wore Friday to Run Errands
Now we’re jumping over a week when I didn’t take photos. About this time I figured you’d seen me wear the things I was wearing over and over as it was. But last Friday I started wearing some new things and thought it was time to start snapping those OOTD photos again. Friday I went to the mall to make a few returns and pick-ups, and I treated myself to lunch at a favorite spot.

The weather was crisp and cool and I felt so sporty and chic wearing my Endless high rise pants with a simple brown tee and my new plaid blazer. I completed this effortless look with my sneakers and simple jewelry. By the way, those pants are no longer available in this color, but they have several new shades in. They fit true to size and are the perfect travel pant. Oh, and that blazer is fairly lightweight and also fits true to size.
What I Wore Saturday Out and About
Saturday I got a notice about our local J.McLaughlin hosting a shopping party where 10% of the proceeds would go to a charity I like to support. So I put on this feminine ruffle front top and my Madewell jeans and headed out.

I ended up leaving J.McLaughlin with these super comfortable suede loafers in Cyprus tan and this ribbed button-front top in brown (TTS). But I’m considering ordering this silk scarf that they didn’t have in the store.
What I Wore to Edit Videos on Monday
Now I have to explain this outfit a little. Monday we recorded the video for two weeks from now and I’m sharing five fall fashion faux pas that can make you look frumpy. The photo below is actually of the “wrong” outfit. LOL! But I forgot to take a photo of the “right” one, which is also what I ended up wearing most of the day. Can you guess the faux pas in the outfit below?

So the right outfit consisted of the denim shirt shown above (sooo comfortable and amazing quality) and these High Hopes cotton modal pants (NOT shown above), both from Ayr. Oh. My. Goodness. Those pants are aptly named. As I took them out of the package and felt that amazing fabric I literally said out loud, “I sure do hope these fit…I have high hopes for these pants!” (I had forgotten they were named that!) And they did not disappoint. I used their size guide to determine that I needed a size Large Long and ordered accordingly. They fit like a dream and they look amazingly sharp and polished, not at all like the “pajama pants” they FEEL like. You’ll see them in the video in a couple of weeks, but I would check them out now. I got the black, but they come in three other colors, too.
What I Wore to Run Errands on Tuesday
Before heading out on my trip I had a nail appointment and then made a few returns at the mall. The weather was pleasantly cool but beginning to warm up a little. I wore the J.McLaughlin brown shirt I’d purchased a few days before with black jeans and brown sandals. I love combining black and brown like this.

This is such a great transitional season outfit: lightweight and comfortable, but also polished. Everything here runs true to size; even that ribbed shirt (wearing a medium).
My Wednesday Travel Outfit
I was so late getting packed up for this trip. I even left my makeup brushes behind. They’re sitting on my bathroom counter all packed up and ready to go! I had no way to apply makeup Thursday, as you’ll see in a bit. Ha! But I managed to get out the door on time in my brown high rise trousers from Athleta, a simple white tee and my L’Agence Janelle jean jacket in biscuit.

I finished my outfit with my Paul Green sneakers because they’re easy to slip on and off. I have TSA pre-check and don’t usually have to remove my shoes, but you never know! This outfit felt perfect for a day of travel. And the airplane was so cool; I was glad I had my jacket.
What I Wore Thursday to Breakfast with My Parents
By the time I took this photo I had managed to find a brush that I could apply my brow putty with. Hahaha! But I did indeed go out to breakfast sans makeup. Anyhow I’m really not so vain as to mind. But I do feel a little more presentable when my brows are at least shaded in a bit.

That said, I wore my black Eileen Fisher cargo pants (I wear a small) with a leopard print short-sleeve cashmere sweater and sandals. The pants are lightweight and just right for this time of year, and the sweater felt casual enough but still interesting.
So that’s how I really dressed for my week. I’m so excited for today to unfold. We’re going to make it a really good one for my mom, who, by the way, is doing splendidly. Thanks so much for dropping in for a little style inspiration. I hope you have a blessed and beautiful day.

Blessed for My Day
I’ve come across John 12:24 several times this week, and each time it has spoken to me about the power of sacrifice. Then Charlie Kirk’s life was ended tragically short on Wednesday, making this scripture come alive in my mind all the more powerfully. I just have to think that, while this young man may no longer be alive on this earth to engage in honest conversations with young adults on college campuses, his legacy will live on all the more powerfully because of the ultimate sacrifice he has now paid.
We certainly do not like the way his life ended. His young widow and two children have also sacrificed much, and our hearts break for them. But we know that Charlie is now in the presence of Jesus, and the Lord had his days numbered before the foundation of this world. We grieve, but we can trust that God will use this tragedy to His glory and for our good. Why? Because if a “grain of wheat” …”dies, it bears much fruit.”
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. ~ John 12:24-25
..it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. ~ Philippians 1:20-22
Your mother is such a blessing to you and your family! Enjoy every moment of this momentous birthday weekend.
Kay, I like these “what I wore” posts. Gives me a variety of good ideas!
Loved all of your outfits! Enjoy your time with family! Happy Birthday to your mother!!!
Happy birthday to your lovely mom! I’m sure she will enjoy everything you have planned for her this weekend! I like all the outfits you wore this week.
Have a beautiful 90’s birthday with your mother. Loved the leopard sweater and blazer in the Labor Day Friday picture.
Thanks so much Sherry
Happy Birthday Mom! Have a great one!
Thanks so much!
Spot on about eyebrows! I’m 75 and darkening my eyebrows is the one makeup item I will not neglect!. Everything else is negotiable.
Hahaha! I hear ya!
Thanks for today’s Blessed for My Day.
I’m glad that ministered to you. Thanks for letting me know.
Happy birthday to your mom! Your family is so blessed to still have your mother at 90! May her health continue. Thank you for the BFMD.
Thank you so much for that kindness.
Happy 90th Birthday to your Mom! I pray your family has a blessed weekend.
Thank you so much, Diane. I think we are treating her pretty well and she’s enjoying it.
Kay, thank you for your comments about Charlie Kirk. I have been especially grieved by his death and these reminders from Scripture help.
Thank you, Cindy. I did lose a number of subscribers who left ugly messages on their way out the door because of my very simple comments. So I do appreciate hearing from readers such as yourself.
Hello Kay, I think it was important for you to comment on the terrible death of Charlie Kirk and I believe any decent person would be shocked and saddened by what happened to him.. I’m In the UK and hadn’t heard of him until his death but was so very sorry to hear about it. Please continue to share your thoughts with us about what is important to you.
Thank you. I really appreciate that. Not that I want to talk about social, moral or political issues frequently or regularly. I don’t. Like most of my readers it really takes me a while to process how I feel and think about such things so I have no desire to do that on a public platform. My thoughts on such matters are generally far too clumsy to articulate with any eloquence or even accuracy. But I do hope women see me as more than a single dimension person who thinks of nothing more than fashion. So it only bears to reason that when we have weeks like we’ve just concluded I may share a tiny bit of that side of my life. 🙂
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your Momma!!! Love your weekly outfits, always a good source of inspiration. This week, I tried some of the fall color combinations you wrote about several days ago. I did a rosewood pink and olive green outfit, with chocolate and cream accents, and a turquoise and warm gray outfit, with peridot green and chocolate accents. Loved both! 🙂 Thank you for the kind tribute to Charlie Kirk, as well as to his faith in the Lord. I am still quite depressed about it all, despite knowing he is home with Jesus. Your verse for today was a comfort, and I pray for much beautiful fruit to come from that very ugly day in American history.
Thank you for the birthday wish. And I appreciate your support. I’ve lost a number of subscribers because of those comments, so it’s aways good to hear from those who are grateful for them.
Kay, you are most certainly welcome. One thing is true – when one stands up for what is right in God’s eyes, there will be people who reject what is said and sometimes even reject us. I am not surprised people unsubscribed because of what you stated. They are free to do that, just as you have every right to express your beliefs and faith. I’ve exited a blog before. I stopped following a blogger who has the opposite views that I do, when this individual decided to post a very strong opinion that I vehemently disagreed with. It wasn’t just what the blogger said, but also the comments that concerned me, a lot of vitriol toward views that I hold dear to my heart. I realized I wouldn’t be welcome there if I spoke my views, so I quietly exited. Not everyone cherishes what God says is good, right and true. Better to please God than try to please everyone.
Today is my mom’s 90th birthday, as well! We celebrated Labor Day weekend when the family could be all together. We were both celebrated because it was my 70th birthday. Enjoy your posts!
Amazing! I hope she had a lovely day today as well. What a blessing!
So happy for you and your family celebrating your mother’s 90th birthday. Such a blessing. I have a white linen shirt and navy linen pants. I have same color accessories too. I think I will copy your outfit when I go to church on Sunday.
Thank you!
Happy Birthday to your beautiful mom! It is truly a gift to be able to share this time with both of your parents! Enjoy a wonderful break!
Thank you. It is a blessing indeed.
Your hair looks fantastic, Kay! I liked it in the longer style as well, but it’s absolutely lovely in this style. Thanks for sharing your OOTDs. I am still working to get the details right and your outfits look “finished.” I think it’s the shoes that still need some work in my outfits.
Thank you. I’ve always been one to change up my hairstyles often. So it will undoubtedly be different in a few months at the most. Ha! But I’m enjoying it for now.
Kay, you are the only blogger that I follow that changes their hair style. Want you to know that it is noticed and appreciated! A new hairstyle brings new energy to us and our look..
I always enjoy the “how I dressed for my day” post. Happy Birthday day your Mom and thanks for your comments about Charlie Kirk. He was a great Christian man!
Thanks so much. Mom has had a lovely birthday weekend. 🥰
Do you get gel nails or acrylic? They always look so nice. Have a great weekend with your family!
I get gel manicures. I’d gladly do my nails myself and did for years. But as many photos and videos as we shoot I found it just makes more sense to make sure they look good with a gel manicures every 18-22 days.
Sending birthday wishes to your mother for every good thing in life! Yep, if I don’t do anything else, I still do my brows – I don’t like the “no brow” look I have otherwise!
Thanks so much. 🥰
Thank you so much for mentioning Charlie’s life and legacy. I follow your channel for ideas on how to dress, presented by a truly classy and kind lady… but this post encourages me in the midst of shock and sadness. Thank you for tying your thoughts directly back to scripture.
You’re so welcome, Sarah. And yes, taking it back to Scripture will always keeps us anchored as we process things.
