How I Really Dressed for My Day October Part 1

Building a Wardrobe that Works

October 25, 2019

Happy Friday! Can you believe October is soon coming to a close? Whaaa? But I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this month…once we got past a few steamy hot days. I feel like I’ve finally been able to wear the fall clothes I’ve been buying and sharing on the blog since the mid-July Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Today I’m sharing how I really dressed for my day in October…part one. Ha! I’ve collected so many of these mirror selfies in my phone that I’m going to break the post up into two installments. Plus that buys me a little time as we prepare for and celebrate my son’s wedding this Sunday. Yippee!

How I Really Dressed for My Day October Part 1

These are the clothes, shoes, jewelry and bags I’m really loving and wearing. You’ll see some repeats. In fact, you’ll see a lot of repeats. Remember, my goal this year has been to build a versatile wardrobe that truly reflects my personal style essence and works for me. Let me know if you think I’m succeeding.

I think most of what I’m showing in this post is still available. But if I show you things I’ve had in my closet for a while or things that have sold out, I’ll try to match you up with a comparable substitute that is available.

SIZING

I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 150. I have an X or hourglass shape and fairly even proportions. I generally wear smalls or maybe mediums in shirts, tops, dresses, coats, etc. I almost always take an 8 in pants, skirts or dresses. But in jeans I vacillate pretty evenly between 8s and 6s.

So that I can write more about styling, let’s assume that everything I’m showing you fits TRUE TO SIZE unless I tell you otherwise. And I will tell you. How’s that? But you want to know about a particular garment, just let me know in the comments section.

About My Days

Keep in mind that I’m a writer. I spend the biggest chunk of my day sitting at a desk in my home office by myself. But I’m also a pastor’s wife and we’ve only been at our current church a little over two months. So we have been pretty busy going to social gatherings where we’ve been meeting and getting to know the people of our new congregation. Thus, I’ve been dressing up a little more than normal.

I thought I would remember when, where and why I wore each of these outfits that I recorded on my phone camera. Alas, I do not remember. Ha! But I’ll make something up along the way…something that’s quite plausible, that is. LOL!

How I Really Dressed for My Day

First up, I’m pretty sure I wore this to one of the luncheons James and I attended hosted by one of our senior adult women’s classes at church.

Dark Floral blouse and cashmere wrap
dark floral silky blouse (sold out – similar and similar) // jeans // black flats (more economical option) // black reversible belt (similar) // cashmere ruana (sold out – more economical option) // shoulder bag (similar option) // bangle // necklace (similar)

Unfortunately my blouse, which I love, love, love, is sold out. I’ve linked you to a couple of other options, one in the same print. My jeans are from Ann Taylor, and I love the dark wash and comfort. They’re still available.

What I like about this look:

I like the column of color created with this look from the dark wash jeans and the dark floral blouse. The light grey cashmere ruana frames the column and lightens the look. I also love the way this Michael Kors bag from last year brings out the deep red in the blouse.

Well no doubt about where I wore this outfit. Ha! This is par for the course most any day that I work from home all day without leaving. Comfort is king! And these textured slip pocket leggings fit the bill.

Leggings and cardigan
textured slip pocket leggings // black v-neck t-shirt // hooded cardigan (now almost 1/4 the price!!!) // sneakers (gifted) //

What I like about this look:

I love the comfort of the leggings and the sassy vibe of these metallic Cariuma sneakers.

I wore the next look to Bible study one Wednesday morning.

girlfriend chinos and denim shirt
classic cotton shirt in denim // girlfriend chinos in dark moss // pointy toe flat in natural camo suede

What I like about this look:

I find these girlfriend chinos to be some of my comfortable pants. Maybe that’s why I have about five pairs in various colors. Honestly, I just love this denim shirt with everything! As you will see…

I’m pretty sure I wore the next outfit one day when I was out running errands, which usually means going to the mall for returns. Ha! Well, I do go the grocery store, post office, Jiffy Lube and other exciting places, too.

black cropped pants
Black cotton cropped pants (sold out – similar) // white v-neck t-shirt // leopard print belt // heathered Ann cartigan // booties (greatly reduced) // hobo bag (less expensive option)

What I like about this look:

My exact pants are no longer available, but they are so comfortable and fresh looking with their unfinished hemline. I like this combination of black and heather beige. And I love wearing these snakeskin booties . I like that these snakeskin booties are a different color combination from most I’ve seen. And they’re extremely comfortable. These shoes are now at Nordstrom Rack and tremendously reduced. Somebody needs to snap these babies up. I’m telling you, they are great shoes.

Next up, my plaid blazer. Be prepared to see this again…and again…and again. Don’t for one minute think that a plaid blazer is not versatile.

Plaid blazer and cords
denim shirt // corduroy jeggings in harvest wheat// leopard print belt // Seaport penny loafer // bangle (sold out – similar) // plaid blazer // fossil satchel (old – similar)

What I like about this outfit:

I really purchased these corduroy jeggings to wear with my boots, and I have worn them that way. But I also love wearing them otherwise. And I like that they go with so many of my other clothes.

I know I wore the next outfit to church one Sunday. I wore the same camel cashmere cardigan that I styled in this post, but open and without the belt.

Camel Cashmere Sweater and plaid pants
plaid ankle pants // mixed media bauble trim blouse in winter white // cashmere camel sweater (sold out – similar) // suede pumps from last year (this year’s edition) // leopard print clutch (last year – similar) // necklace (similar) // bangle (similar)

What I like about this outfit:

I’m drawn to camel lately. But I don’t seem to be able to find camel colored slacks I like. And I don’t think a camel pullover is best for me. So I’m beyond thrilled that I found this camel cashmere wrap sweater when it was marked down and before they sold out. I love this way this outfit comes together from every angle – shoes, sweater, jewelry, etc.

Up next, I bought this next sweater in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I’ve been waiting since July to wear it! The pullover is sold out in the color I’m wearing, but it’s still available in a dark charcoal grey. The sweater is soft and creates a pretty silhouette.

Pullover Sweater and Jeans
cozy v-neck sweater (available only in dark charcoal grey, I’m wearing a small) // AG high waist ankle skinny jeans (wearing a 29) // snakeskin booties (greatly reduced) // hobo bag (less expensive option) // necklace (similar)

What I like about this outfit:

I like the way the snakeskin booties are in the same color palette as the sweater. That’s a great key to style. If you can match your shoes and something at the top of your look – your top, hat, scarf, topper – it will pull your whole look together without much effort needed elsewhere.

Next, I wore my plaid blazer, fall pumpkin t-shirt and boots to one of the gatherings James and I have been going to in order to meet our new church family. Or maybe it was the women’s ministry leadership meeting and dinner? Who knows! I really meant to remember.

Plaid Blazer and t-shirt
AG high waist ankle skinny jeans (wearing a 29) // t-shirt (sold out – similar and similar) // plaid blazer // leather riding boots // leather tote

What I like about this outfit:

I love wearing graphic tees with blazers of all kinds. And I especially love how this graphic tee has all the same colors as the plaid jacket.

Bummer. I wish I had taken a photo of the next outfit without the belt bag, too. The poncho sweater hangs beautifully. And it’s so soft and pretty.

poncho sweater
pointelle poncho sweater in pinkberry heather (wearing xs/s) // AG high waist ankle skinny jeans (wearing a 29) // leather riding boots // Rebecca Minkoff belt bag (less expensive option) // brown long sleeve t-shirt (not on shopping widget) // necklace

What I like about this look:

Well, I love the sweater. But I have to tell you, I’m really enjoying wearing/carrying belt bags now that I’ve bought a couple. I got this one for a much reduced price at Nordstrom. They’re sold out now, but it’s at Last Call for a reduced price, too. I removed the tassels from mine.

That’s a wrap for today, ladies! I actually have ten more looks that I’ve been squirreling away. Ha! So I’ll pick up with Part 2 next week, maybe Tuesday or so. Thank you so much for reading today. Blessed for My Day

What do you need today, dear gal? Is your mind spent? Do you need a break? Or maybe you’re lonely and could really use a pal. Do you ache for healing of your broken heart? Or maybe you could use a good laugh, the kind that makes you shed a tear or double over.

Whatever you’re needing today, Jesus compassionately wants to meet that need. He may not meet it exactly in the way you would plan. But He can and desires to meet your need. Why not share that need with Him today. Then ask Him to satisfy that hunger in a way that could only be Him. And when He does, tell Him thank you.

In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat. ~ Mark 8:1-2

Spread the love

  1. Enjoyed seeing all your “what I really wore” outfits! Some weeks, I’d die if anyone saw mine, LOL! (Like the jogging pants & pullover top I wore for 2 days when I felt under the weather)… I think the blazer w/the jeans & boots are a favorite of mine, such a classic look. I live in jeans and different tops that I seem to change throughout the day, When I get working around the house, i always get hot, then it’s short sleeves. When I sit down for lunch, I cool down, then it’s back on with a cardigan. And so it repeats itself all day, hot, cold, hot, cold! Enjoy your wedding festivities this weekend. How wonderful for all of you! All the fun, without all the planning, lol!

    1. Hahaha! I had to laugh at your hot, cool, hot, cool. I’m like that too on busy days. Im sitting here with my coffee feeling a little overwhelmed with the day ahead. I still have so much to do to get ready for guests. Top of the list: bathe the dog!

    2. My oldest son is getting married next month…I’ll be right where you are in a few weeks! Congratulations to all, best wishes and blessings for the happy couple!

  2. May God bless your son and daughter-in-law’s wedding and marriage! And may God bless you and your family this weekend too! Enjoy the festivities and celebration! Praying for you and your husband this weekend. ??❤️??

  3. Really enjoyed your many looks today! Casual but very good looking.
Have a wonderful weekend! Weddings are so magical and pass in a blur.
Blessings to your family as you all travel and share in your time together!

  4. I love these “what I really wore” posts! I can get so many idea’s on how to style my own clothes. So excited for your son and his new wife to be! It’s a joyous time when your kids get married but bittersweet too. Girls tend to come home more for visits and boys are usually dragged to their in-laws more but all that being said, I’m VERY close to both of my kiddo’s and very thankful for that. Will be thinking about all of you on Sunday! Blessings to you all.

  5. Congrats on gaining a beautiful daughter in-law! Thank you so much for sharing how you styled so many great outfits. I’m inspired to dig in my closet and come up with something that will make me feel great as I spend time with girlfriends this weekend. God bless you!

  6. Congrats on your son’s wedding! Please show us the dress you decided to wear! I really love the first outfit- those colors just look beautiful and beautiful on you!! Praying for hood weather for the wedding!!

  7. Hope the wedding is wonderful. Can’t wait to hear about it and see what dress you picked. Enjoy the time with your family.

  8. Great post, Kay! Thank you for sharing all of these beautiful outfits! Have a beautiful and blessed day on Sunday at your son’s wedding! ???

  9. I love your post. I look forward to them each day. I am also working through your Bible study, “Satisfied at Last”. It is a wonderful, encouraging study that is just what I need at this time. I plan to recommend it to a group of young and older ladies that I am a part of.

    1. Hi Melba. I’m so glad you’re enjoying the website and the Bible study, but especially the Bible study. If you do find a group of women to do the study with, you can feel free to order the books through me directly. I can give you a discount on them if you order at least 10. That would be just wonderful! Thanks for letting me know.

  10. I really enjoyed this post Kay! I know that y’all are going to enjoy the family time, but especially the wedding on Sunday. I hope that you will share a few pictures with us, so that we can see how beautiful you and your daughter look, your handsome husband, and the gorgeous bride and groom. Blessing to all!

  11. Hi Kay! Hope you and your family have a wonderful celebration time at the wedding! What a blessing! I have two sons that are not married yet, so I will one day be in your shoes! Enjoy

  12. I’m looking forward to seeing a few pictures from your son’s wedding! Fall weddings are so beautiful!
May I ask what size you bought in the denim Talbot’s shirt? Sometimes I’m a small & sometimes a medium, just like you.
    Thank you!
    Barb

    1. Hi Barb. You can see a few photos in the Tues and Thursday posts. They say it’s going to be a while before we get more unfortunately. I have the Talbots denim shirt in a medium. The small fit, but felt a tad constraining in the shoulders. My shoulders are slightly wide.

      1. Thank you, Kay! I saw the pictures & they are beautiful! You look amazing!
I find the same issue with Talbot’s blouses especially if they are all cotton.
