Hello and welcome to Dressed for My Day! My goal here is to inspire and help women like you and me to dress beautifully and appropriately for our unique days so we can engage with those around us authentically and graciously and influence them well. That’s a mouthful, but it helps me to stay true to my mission if I repeat my purpose statement occasionally.
While I like to invest in quality pieces for my wardrobe essentials that I hope to wear year after year, I value a good deal as much as the next gal. That’s why I’m pleased to bring you this Target try-on session today. I think you’ll be quite pleased with what I found at Target yesterday.
I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 150. I have an X or hourglass shape and fairly even proportions. I generally wear smalls or maybe mediums in shirts, tops, dresses, coats, etc. I almost always take an 8 in pants, skirts or dresses. But in jeans I vacillate pretty evenly between 8s and 6s.
I’ll let you know if things run true to size and what size I’m wearing in the photos. But if you have any additional questions about fit, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.
MY TRY-ON SESSION
I was a little amazed at the beautiful selection I found at Target. Of course, I didn’t try nearly everything that I could have. But hopefully these photos will give you a feel for what’s available and how the different lines fit.
Keep in mind, you can order from Target.com and get free shipping to your local Target. I use that form of shopping frequently at Target. Sure the item may already be in your store, but availability is higher online and you can think a little better in front of your computer than you can meandering through the store. I also find that I stick to my budget better with online shopping than I do in-store shopping.
Let’s see what I found.
A New Day Women’s Regular Fit Mid-Rise Pleated Pants in cream (wearing size 8) // I was a little discouraged right out of the gate. These cream mid-rise pleated pants just didn’t work for me at all. I’m wearing a size 8, and maybe if I sized up to a 10 they would have worked better. But I’m not very impressed with the silhouette either.
Long Sleeve Crewneck Pleated Blouse in red (wearing size small) // This red pleated blouse however, is much prettier on than it is on the hanger. The small is plenty roomy for me. The blouse feels rich and has a removable same color/fabric camisole under it. The pleated blouse features a slight peplum. The photo doesn’t do it justice. I really liked this blouse. It also comes in blue.
A New Day Women’s Ponte Pants in black (wearing size medium) // These ponte knit pants were one of the biggest surprises of the day. First of all, they’re quite long for a regular fit. Keep in mind I’m 5’8″ and they’re a little long on me. But you can work with that if you’re tucking them into boots. Most importantly, these ponte knit pants are thick and soft. The fabric feels good and smooth. I can highly recommend these.
Next I changed into some slim ankle brown micro-plaid pants and a leopard print pullover sweater.
A New Day Women’s Plaid Mid-Rise Slim Ankle Pants (wearing size 10) // I did size up to the 10 in these pants and they fit pretty well. I think the fabric is pretty, on trend and comfortable. They’re fairly lightweight. I probably wouldn’t wear them with these shoes. I think this outfit would look great with my black suede pumps, which I bought from Target last year.
Leopard Print Long Sleeve Rib-Knit Cuff Crewneck Pullover Sweater (wearing size small) // If you want to add some fun leopard print to your wardrobe this sweater is very economical and a beautiful way to do that. The sweater is comfortable, fits true to size and features a pretty animal print. Size up for a roomier fit if you prefer.
Next I tried a turtleneck t-shirt for layering. I wouldn’t wear this shirt by itself, but I wanted to show it to you so you could get a feel for thickness and length.
A New Day Women’s Regular Fit Long Sleeve Turtleneck Ribbed Sweatshirt (wearing size medium) // It took me forever to find this thin layering tee on the Target website because they have it labeled so oddly. This is not a sweatshirt. It’s a layering tee with a short turtleneck. It’s got lots of stretch, but definitely fits close to the body. I’m wearing a medium. Honestly, I don’t recommend this tee, but I do like the sweater I tried on over it next.
Long Sleeve Open Neck Layering Rib Cardigan in brown (wearing size medium) // The main thing I like about this cardigan is the rich brown color. I think it looks lovely with these plaid pants, but it would also pair beautifully with black pants. It has lots of stretch and is fairly thin.
Long Sleeve V-Neck Chenille Pullover Sweater (wearing size small) // This pullover features a fairly boxy fit, so it works well with high-waisted trousers or jeans. I’m wearing the black, but it’s also available in gold, cream, and dark green. If chenille is your jam, this one is sweet.
A New Day Women’s Long Sleeve Ribbed Cuff V-Neck Pullover Sweater in camel (wearing size small) // This lightweight sweater comes in myriad colors, but I think this camel is so versatile. I’m wearing a small, but I’d probably prefer a medium for a roomier fit.
Animal Print V-Neck Tank Top (wearing size medium) // Obviously I wouldn’t wear this camisole by itself, at least not at this time of year. But this post is about showing you how things fit, so I wanted you to see it. This is not a silky or satin camisole. It’s rayon. But it would still make a nice layering piece under a blazer or cardigan. And I layered it under the camel pullover in the next photo. The straps are adjustable.
Well, this pleated red skirt doesn’t seem to be on the Target website. I’m going to leave it here in case it shows up later and I’ll add the link. Meanwhile, you might find it in your local store. It seems like it also came in black or some other color. It fits true to size and is definitely on trend. I suggest a soft front tuck with this skirt to prevent tummy bulge. Or you could pair it with a boxy short pullover sweater.
A New Day Women’s Long Sleeve Mock Turtleneck Sweater Dress in burnt red (wearing size medium) // This dress appears to be available in only cream and charcoal online, but I might like those shades better anyhow. This red is pretty, too, and you might find it in your local store. Or it may be online soon. Anyhow, the dress runs quite roomy through the chest and mid section and a little snugger below the hips. But I think you could also stretch it to work for you a little better. It’s quite thick and has a lot of stretch. The dress comes with a self-fabric belt, but I added this A New Day Women’s Hammered Buckle Embossed Sash Belt for a more chic look. I would recommend wearing shapewear with this dress.
Plaid Single Breasted Top Coat (wearing size medium) // When people tell me to size down in coats, I usually think no way! But I would definitely need a small in this coat, even for an oversized fit. It’s not especially heavy, but it is lined. And the plaid is definitely trending. If you want to add a fun plaid coat to the mix this winter, but you don’t want to drop big bucks for it, this coat is a nice option.
A New Day Women’s Slim Fit Long Sleeve Crewneck Luxe Rib T-Shirt (wearing size medium) // Again, I wouldn’t wear this layering t-shirt alone, but I wanted you to see it fully. This is a great white tee, and it also comes in black, teal, and brown. I’m wearing a medium. I might could wear a small, but as long as it fits close to the body I’d rather err on the side of it being roomy.
Women’s Highest-Rise Skinny Jeans Universal ThreadTM Dark Wash (wearing size 8R) // These jeans do not exactly look like the ones showing up on the website, but I entered the sku number, so I know these are indeed the highest-rise skinny jeans. Y’all. These jeans are a winner. They are amazingly comfortable, long enough even for my 5’8″ frame and very flattering. I came home with these.
Women’s Honeycomb Long Sleeve Open Neck Layering Sweater in brown (wearing size medium) // This sweater is soft and thick. It will keep you warm, but it’s not itchy or overly heavy. I’m wearing a medium, but the small would have simply been a slimmer fit. This sweater comes in several other nice shades.
A New Day Women’s Regular Fit Long Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt in black (wearing size small) // I tried the regular long sleeve crewneck t-shirt in a small, just to see the difference. The other tee has ribs or ridges. This one is smooth, but it still has lots of stretch. So the small works fine, too. I think it would purely be personal preference here.
Universal Thread Women’s Long Sleeve Crewneck Fleece Tunic Pullover Sweatshirt in rose (wearing size small) // This crewneck fleece tunic pullover sweatshirt definitely runs a little large. I’m wearing a small, but it’s ample large. I appreciate that the sleeves are long enough and that the shirt, while boxy, creates a slenderizing silhouette. It comes in several other colors, too.
I’ve got to pause here and tell you a funny story. I had been freely going into the common area of the fitting rooms to snap my photos. Hardly anyone else was in the fitting room area. But when I opened the door of my fitting room to go take the photo of this next outfit, I discovered the man across from me had left his door open and was changing clothes. He just had his shirt off and his back was to me, but it was just too much for me! So I stayed in my rather messy dressing room for this photo!
Long Sleeve Collared Button-Down Shirt in olive (wearing size medium) // This shirt is very, very soft and comfortable. I love this olive, but it’s available in several other colors as well.
Next, I tried another pair of jeans and a lightweight sweatshirt with a tie waist.
High-Rise Skinny Jeans (wearing size 8R) // These jeans are part of Universal Thread’s Fair Trade Certified line. They feature a slightly lower high rise fit than the other jeans and a darker wash. These also fit true to size (for my usual larger size in jeans) and feel great on. In the past I’ve recommended Target’s jeans with a little hesitancy, but I can wholeheartedly recommend both pairs I tried on.
A New Day Women’s Long Sleeve Mock Turtleneck Pullover in black (wearing size small) // I think this lightweight sweatshirt is cute, youthful and comfortable. I’d certainly wear it. You just need to be on-board with having the drawstring tie hanging in front.
Plaid Long Sleeve Cotton Flannel Shirt in gold (wearing size medium) // I’ve had a crazy hankering for some good flannel lately, and I’d yet to find a flannel shirt I really like. Until yesterday. I found a full selection of them! This plaid flannel shirt is the perfect weight, not too thick. It’s soft and roomy. I love this color, but I also like this red one and this navy one.
Sherpa Bomber Jacket in cream (wearing size medium) // I’ve been seeing so many bloggers and Instagrammers wearing these fuzzy sherpas and decided to try one. I opted for the full length zip-up style rather than the pullover because I know I would struggle with wearing a pullover. And I love it! It’s a lightweight but warm bomber style jacket that feels roomy and comfortable but gives a surprisingly pleasing silhouette. This jacket is also available in a rich chocolate brown.
Long Sleeve Raglan Fine Gauge Sweater Cardigan in olive (wearing size medium) // This sweater was a nice surprise, too. It has a rich thickness to it without feeling overwhelming. It’s soft. I could probably fit into a small, but I like the oversized, comfortable feel of the medium for this one. It’s a great price for chunky knit sweater.
Time for another t-shirt!
A New Day Women’s Long Sleeve V-Neck T-Shirt in black (wearing size small) // This t-shirt isn’t quite as thin as the other layering tees I’ve shown, and it fits slight bit looser. I like the v-neck for wearing under most cardigans and blazers. But I’m still trying to decide if I want a v-neck or crew neck for my long sleeve tees. What are your thoughts on this conundrum? If I go with a v-neck, this is the tee.
A New Day Women’s Plaid Oblong Scarf in maple syrup // Target has so many pretty scarves to choose from. They’re not especially high quality, but not every scarf needs to be. If you’re looking for something trendy and fresh, there’s a great selection. I like this oblong scarf belted, especially with this great belt bag.
Universal Thread Women’s Belt Bag in cognac // I’ve purchased a couple of higher end belt bags on sale recently, but this faux leather one is every bit as trendy and cute at a fraction of the price. This is definitely a beautiful option if you’re wanting to dip your two into this trend without making an investment. I LOVE this belt bag and it came home with me. I’ll be doing a post soon on how to wear belt bags! This one also comes in black.
Next up, a pullover sweater and another great handbag.
Universal Thread Women’s Long Sleeve Crew Neck Raglan Pullover Sweater in cream (wearing size small) // This is just your basic pullover sweater, but it’s a good one. The sweater is soft, fits nicely (size up for a roomier fit if you prefer) and comes in several pretty shades.
Flap Closure Satchel Handbag in maple // This faux leather bag is available in a number of shades, but I think this fall maple is so pretty and authentic looking. It’s a sweet price, too.
Next up, another easy to wear sweater dress.
A New Day Women’s Long Sleeve Crewneck Rib Knit Dress in rose (wearing size medium) // This is a lightweight, thinner sweater dress. With the right shapewear worn underneath, it would create a pretty silhouette. It skims the body close, but does not cling tight. There’s plenty of stretch in this dress. It comes in several other pretty fall shades, too.
A New Day Top Handle Crossbody Bag in brown clay // This sweet top handle bag is also available in solid black. If you need a pretty dress bag, this one gets my vote. And if you’re wanting to dip your toe into the snake print trend without wearing it, here ya go!
Well that’s a wrap!!
I found other great items at Target, of course. And I came home with a few pieces of jewelry (including these earrings), a flannel shirt, these boots and the belt bag. I would have snapped photos of these things, too, but after the very last outfit my phone died. Ha! Go figure.
Here’s a shopping widget with everything from Target featured in today’s post and a few of the other things I mentioned. These are affiliate links and if you purchase anything while shopping through them, I potentially earn a commission, but at no cost to you. Thanks so much for shopping my links and supporting my work here at Dressed for My Day! And remember, shopping Target online is so easy and convenient. You can usually pick up your items at your local store, often without getting out of your car!
Have a lovely day, dear gal!
Blessed for My Day
I want to be a woman with a sense of humor. And I’d like for others to think of me as friendly and approachable. Sure, I’d like to be a little stylish and not frumpy. But more than anything I want to be wise.
While it’s noble to desire other character traits, nothing pays the dividends that wisdom does in our lives and the lives of those around us. Lord, make us wise women! Give us something of value to pass on to our children. Give us Your perspective as we watch the news and listen to friends share their difficulties. And give us good words to speak to our own hearts and into the lives of others during uncertain times.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. ~ Proverbs 9:10

So much cuteness in this post! I really appreciate the links because my Target is not a Super Target and never has all the cute things. I like the A New Day line of clothes pretty often and will definitely try some of these. Thanks!
I’m glad this was helpful to you, Stacey! Have a great day! ?
Wow, thanks for this post! So much to think about! You must have been exhausted after trying on all these clothes!
Hahaha! I was a little tired, but I’m learning a few little tricks to make it go more smoothly. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. ?
Some nice items here! You are such a trooper because that had to of taken a lot of time!
Did you purchase the boots in black or brown? They are such a good price .
It was fun and you gals fuel the work! ? I got the boots in brown. I’m wearing them with a skirt and tights today. ?
Thanks for this Try-On session and post! You found a LOT of cute things to consider. As you said, not everything from Target is the highest quality but not everything needs to be. They offer budget friendly fashionable items
Yep! That is the way I see it too. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. ?
I’m new to your site and I must say I’m thoroughly enjoying your posts. I am a Christian lady with similar coloring (hair and skin) and
almost the same age. I have been following a couple of other bloggers but they were brunettes and younger than myself, so I am delighted to find you. I am not a Target shopper, but I must say I love the scarf and the belt bag on you … so, so cute! Great post.
Keep up the good work!!
Hi Camille. Thanks so much for introducing yourself. I love it when readers do that. I’m wearing the belt bag today with my denim shirt https://shopstyle.it/l/9sUV and plaid skirt https://shopstyle.it/l/9sXp from Talbots. ?
I love the way you styled the scarf! So cute!
Thanks Rhonda! Fun, huh!
Hi Kay! What a variety! Something for everyone! I like the little bomber jacket (that sticks out in my mind). Your story reminds me of the time my sister & I were looking at sports bras in our local Target. We’d forgotten the dressing rooms were recently changed to unisex! When we say men going into the dressing room the same time we were, needless to say – we went the other way! Now I have a phobia about Target dressing rooms! I live too far away to have that worry really! lol
Yeah, I’m really not a fan either. I think next time I may just buy things, try them on and return them. I really did not like being in there with him. Just felt kinda creepy.
Whew! I’m worn out just reading the post? I buy some clothes from Target. I bought the same jeans earlier in the week. Thanks for all you do. God tells us to ask for wisdom! Great post!
I LOVE the way you wore the scarf and belt bag! So darling on you. I actually thought it was a cape or jacket syle! Hope you bought that scarf too!
Kay, I REALLY appreciate you doing a post on some of the fashion finds at Target! As a retiree, on a fixed income, living in a very rural area, I no longer buy many investment pieces. I continue use to be very happy with my purchases from Target. You shared so many pieces that look great in you! I think that a crew neck long sleeve tee, for layering, would be more versatile. Kohl’s and Old Navy also has lightweight flannel shirts that are economical and very comfy. Thanks again!
