I’m loving all the classic garments, fabrics, colors and accessories that are trending this year. Truly, you don’t have to be a trendy gal to enjoy the styles that will look current and of the moment this fall. Today I thought I’d share a few ways I’m styling a fall trend to try: the button-front vest. And I’ve found so many at your favorite retailers if you’re interested in trying this trending classic, too.

I remember sharing that the button-front vest would be trending a couple of falls ago. And then…there were none to be found! Ha! That demonstrates the time gap that often occurs between the announcement of a trend, based on the showings in New York Fashion Week, and the time when that trend shows up in the stores where we really shop. Sure, there were a few random button-up vests here and there in 2022. But NOW I’m seeing these suit vests EVERYWHERE.

I was eager to try the trend in 2022, and I did. But it wasn’t until this year that I’ve begun to see plenty of style options and inventory. So really I feel like we’re just stepping into this classic trend. It usually takes us a minute or two to figure out how to wear something when it first hits the stores (i.e., wide leg jeans). So I’m definitely not an expert at styling this menswear inspired garment.

Recently I found this very traditional “waisted vest in yarn dyed plaid” at Madewell and decided to snap this one up. By the way, this is also about the time in a trend cycle when, while the inventory is up, the sales are also fast and high. So they fly off the websites and racks fast. I noticed at least four different button-up vests on the Evereve website that had “sold out” signs but also promised restocks.
Below I made a shopping widget with lots of other great button-front vests that I found in the stores where you love to shop. Click through for more information or to purchase.

When you add something completely new-to-you to your wardrobe, you really just have to play around with it to discover how to wear it. Sure, you can check the website where you purchased it to see how it’s worn there. In this case, the button-front vest above is featured on the website worn with jeans alone with nothing under it, buttoned up (of course!). They also show it with the coordinating jacket worn over it. And here you can see the vest worn with the coordinating pants. But the jacket is quite boxy and has very oversized shoulder pads that can’t be removed without a tailor, so I decided against it. And I haven’t tried on the pants. And of course I’m trying to style it for fall, so I’ll definitely be wearing something under this one.

After playing around with styling this waisted vest a bit, I think I prefer it unbuttoned for me. And it’s okay with the short sleeve tee, but I really prefer it over the button-up shirt (more economical option). I may enjoy wearing it later with long sleeves tees, as well. You may have noticed above that I also tried it with one button buttoned. I like that pretty well, too. But I definitely prefer the more relaxed vibe of the unbuttoned vest for my personal style aesthetic. What do you like for your personal style?

Above I wore the vest buttoned over the same tee with corduroy wide leg trousers in the same silhouette as my trouser jeans from J.Crew. Like the jeans, these wide leg trousers fit true to size; I’m wearing a size 30. They do feature a high waist, which is worth pointing out because all of the pant choices I’ve shown have a similar high rise. Most of the vests I’m seeing are a little cropped in length, so they work best with a high rise jean or pant. I do love these cords.

My vest has black, brown and blue lines in it, so it works nicely with all three of these pant options. I think it could work with ivory or off white jeans (less than $50 right now!) or cords (yes, I got the ivory ones, too!), as well.

I do suggest tucking your top and adding a belt, too, for a more pulled together look, especially with this particular kind of vest. Of course, if you button the vest you won’t need the belt.

Thanks so much for stopping in for a little style inspiration. While it is a classic piece, I know that a button-front vest it not for everyone’s tastes. Will you be trying this fall trend or passing? It’s fun to consider trending pieces to add to our wardrobe and it’s a great way to keep our closets current. But it’s also important to choose trending items that are also true to our personal style.

Sometimes we mistakenly hinge our hopes on another person, a promising venture, the money we’ve stored up in the bank or an institution. But the Bible teaches us to look toward the only One who can really meet our every need. Our help comes from the Lord. When we lean into Him for help, we can be assured that indeed help will come.
But if you’re familiar with the promise of Psalm 121:1-2, you may remember that there is more to that verse. “My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.” If God can make heaven and earth He can surely provide the resources, rescue, redemption or restoration that you need. Lean into Him today and know that not only is He reliable, but He is able.
I will raise my eyes to the mountains; From where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. ~ Psalm 121:1-2

Love vests either pullover or button up. Have too many. Always useful; but why are they still trying to make us love those awful wide legged pants of any fabric???? I won’t buy them ever.
Thanks for sharing. That’s an interesting perspective. I don’t ever think someone is trying to make me like something. I just really enjoy wearing wide leg pants and jeans. But personal preference is the beauty of fashion! 🥰
I wondered what happened yesterday. You are very consistent. I went to the blog to see if my email just didn’t get it. I watched part of the Alaska video again instead. I am going on a cruise to New England soon. I’m excited! You have a lot of videos and I realized I would like rewatch some of them.
Stuff happens, It all works out in the end:)
Have a fantastic day!
I like the vest buttoned or unbuttoned according to what you wear it with and what your mood is that day. I purchased a white linen vest this Spring from Talbots and wear it both ways. I wore it buttoned up with nothing under it when it was hot. I am not completely on board with the wide leg pants. Do not have your height, as I am only 5’3″ I have to be careful how wide they are and are always too long. Glad the video was pulled yesterday, as I am disappointed when an influencer shows something i really like and it is sold out. Nice DFMD.
Two years ago I picked up a men’s suit vest at a thrift store (I didn’t break up or buy the whole suit), in medium grey wool. I will most definitely be wearing it over a tailored shirt with various trousers/jeans/cords this fall/winter.
Thrifting is so smart! Wish I could see how you style it.
You look fantastic in this look. Being “doubly blessed” I just don’t think it would work over my chest. You have inspired me though to give it a try undone. Sometimes it is just sad when you like a style but it doesn’t work with your body. Thanks for all you do.
Love seeing how you styled the vest three different ways and talked about even more options. I love the vest on others but find I don’t like it on me(but can’t decide if it’s because I don’t know how to incorporate it into my wardrobe?!). I have decided to try wide leg pants and I think all my energy is going to making these work for me. Trying to find tops that flatter that look in my price point is about all I want to add right now.
I don’t think I will be getting on this wagon! It’s not for me.
I was worried about you and James. I wondered if one of you were sick or had an accident of some sort. Life is forever changing and challenging weekly unfortunately. Glad all is ok! I am really liking the Vest look, might try and find one that is less expensive since it is a trend. You styled it beautiful!
A bit too masculine looking for my personal aesthetic. 🙂 But it probably works well for those with a stronger leaning toward classic style than I have.
I like vest, but just not the more men’s inspired ones for me. I do like this one on your and like it best unbuttoned. I still haven’t purchased any vest yet. As for the wide leg jeans/pants, I love them on others but at 5’3″ anytime I’ve tried them, they look too dumpy and add visual weight and are always too long. But, thats okay, as there is plenty of other styles to wear and I can wear the wider leg linen pants in the Spring and Summer. I’ve found some that aren’t too wide or long. I missed you yesterday, but figured something came up. I’m new to your blog, so don’t know how often you can’t post.
Hi Kathy. Thanks for sharing. I almost always have blog posts on Monday and Tuesday, then a YouTube video on Wednesday, followed by blog posts on Thursday and Friday. Welcome to Dressed for My Day! 🥰
I like those vests. I wore them in the 70’s with my wide leg pants. I was smaller busted and had no trouble buttoning that type of vest. I’ve tried some and I can’t button them anymore. I’m one of those women who’s weight shifted to my chest with age. If I could find one that fit properly I would buy it. It would be perfect with my wide leg jeans and pants.
Yes, I can see where that would be a challenge. The one from Talbots may be more constructed for a mature woman’s body. 😉
Thank you for the suggestion Kay.
I ordered 2 vests because I love the look. I think the pointed hemed vests are very flattering. The problem is, they are diffiult to wear for larger brests, being too tight across the chest, or too loose at the waist. Instead I purchased a button up knit vest. Unfortunately no slimming points with a knit, but the modern look is achievable. I’ve also dived into the outdoor lightly quilted vests to add color and style to my jeans during fall.
Yes, really all types of vests are trending. Those sound like great options. 😊
The vest looks awesome on you. It goes with so many colors! I enjoyed BFMD too. Have a beautiful and blessed day. It is beautiful up here in Kirtland , OH, NE Ohio on the north coast!
I like this look! Does it work for those of us with larger bosoms?
That’s not something I have any experience with, hahaha! But I seem to be hearing from other readers that it can be challenging. I have a feeling the vest from Talbots may be a little more forgiving for a more mature woman’s body, but I haven’t tried it yet. And I would probably get a vest that fits as well as possible, but then still leave it unbuttoned. I don’t think you want a vest that looks like it can’t be buttoned.
