During the winter we tend to lean into sweater and jean combinations for our casual lifestyles. But to elevate this everyday outfit combination for work, church or any occasion when you want to look more polished, why not top your classic trouser with a beautiful pullover sweater instead. Today I’m sharing classic style tips for the modern woman as we continue our style series. I’ve got a few secrets to share!

Secret #1: Create a Stylish Blend of Classics and Trending Details
The first key to styling your favorite classics from your closet is to blend them with pieces that feature trending details. These pieces can also be classics, but they’re trending or, as we say, “having a moment.”

In my timeless, elevated winter outfit I’m wearing a classic trouser in an on-trend full leg silhouette that features menswear inspired cuffs and outward facing pleats. These LilySilk trousers are made beautifully with a machine-washable wool-silk blend fabric that has a smooth, silky hand and dreamy drape. They feature a hidden elasticized waistband in the back to ensure ease of movement through your busy day. These pants , also available in almond and black, will be in my closet for years to come.

Secret #2: Add Energy and Vibrance to Prevent Boredom or Staleness
Also on trend, my classic loafers with a horse bit detail complete my outfit and set the tone. These shoes feel timeless and modern at the same time, and when combined with contrasting socks that mimic the color in my pullover sweater, they add a youthful energy to this classic combination. To keep your classic pairings from looking boring or stale, be sure to add some whimsy, energy or vibrance to the mix. You could do any of the following:
- add an unexpected pop of color
- pin on a whimsical brooch
- top with a sporty jacket
- wear a youthful fashion sneaker
- let a crewneck tee peak out of the neckline of your sweater
Can you think of additional ways to add energy and vibrance to prevent boredom or staleness when dressing in classics?

Secret #3: Give a Nod to Femininity When Wearing Menswear Inspired Combos
Menswear inspired pieces continue to trend in 2026, and I actually love many of the options. I’m a big fan of blazers, tailored pants, loafers, button-up shirts and waist belts. But if we’re not careful, these menswear classics can add up and tip the scale of our ensemble toward masculine. You can easily rectify that with a few simple, more feminine choices.

I suggest keeping your hairstyle soft and feminine, wearing a little makeup, adding some pretty jewelry and maybe tying the look together with a silky scarf. Looking back, I wish I’d added a silk neck scarf here, maybe one with just a little bit of color. What do you think?

What classic pieces are you wearing on repeat this winter? How are you balancing them with modern touches, keeping them from looking boring and maintaining a little femininity? I’d love to hear from you today. You can shop my look through the links in the photograph captions as well as through the shopping widget below. But I bet you have similar items in your closet that you could use to create a similar look.

Blessed for My Day
There are some commands in the Bible that I breeze right through. And no, I don’t mean I accomplish them easy-peasy. I mean I sometimes over simplify them and under deliver in obeying them. I think to myself, “oh, I’ve got that!” But really, if I take the time to look at the directive and then examine my life in light of it? No, I don’t “got that” at all.
For instance, Jesus tells us that if we love truly God we must also love our brother and sister. (He’s not even asking us to love our enemies here; just our brothers and sister. I assume that means those who are also believers in Christ.) So I tend to skate over verses like these. But then I bump up against one of those brothers or sisters. Know what I mean? Bump up against them? Feel a little rubbed the wrong way? How do I respond in those situations? With the godly love described in 1 Corinthians 13? With patience, kindness, humility? Do I forgive easily, assume the best and put their needs first? Hmm. Turns out this command is not so easy-peasy after all.
If someone says, “I love God,” and yet he hates his brother or sister, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God must also love his brother and sister. ~ 1 John 4:20-21
Hi – I like menswear look, too. I think the pendant necklace and your purse add a nice note of femininity. You could do a scarf, but it’s really a choice.
I am pretty much the same especially in the cold weather since I have retired. I have been retired for a few years now and I am pretty much a homebody too. This week I will be out and about for the past 4 days in a row. Unusual for me in the Winter, but I had dentist and a couple of other appointments and Bible study group this morning. I actually dressed up in dress pants and sweater for the dentist and today cords, sweater, and blazer. Otherwise, it is jeans or casual joggers, etc. Like this look and loved the BFMD. It is hard to love our neighbors sometimes, especially the unlovable. But you have to try to be like Jesus. I have to say to myself I am trying Jesus.
I don’t particularly like menswear for myself and my lifestyle except in very dressy occasions. But appropriate for others, I’m sure.
Need your suggestions to make a plain solid sweater and jeans outfit not boring. I am stuck. Could you do a blog on ways to make that look special? Thank you.
Sure. Meanwhile check out this video: 4 BIG Sweater Weather Tips for Polished Outfits

Not that you asked me, Alli but for me, it’s a belt. Something impactful. Or a really pretty scarf. OR an unusual necklace of some kind.
Same vibe for me today – classics in lighter neutrals (I’m wearing a warm ivory top, lighter gray trousers). 🙂 How do I keep my classics from being boring or too masculine? My style angles are classic, feminine, polished, so I’ve built a wardrobe around classics, but keep it feminine with softer fabrics (jersey, cashmere, quality knitwear, lace, etc) and graceful necklines (like cowl or scoop), delicate princess-y jewelry, and my shoes are decidedly feminine, with bows or rhinestones on them. My only pair of loafers is leopard. 🙂 I think you balanced your look well, without the scarf looks lovely, and it would look equally lovely with a scarf.
Great looks! Yesterday I wore my classic vintage tweed blazer I’ve had since the 80’s and paired it with my rust colored paperbag denim pants. I wore a mockneck rust colored cotton top under a deeper rust colored cashmere crewneck sweater. I loved the way that came together. Gave me Ralph Lauren vibes but with the updated look with the choice of pants. I topped it off with burgundy accessories (belt, bag and booties).
Same. My current work outfit formula is a trouser pant with a pullover sweater in neutrals with a color thrown in here and there. I’m currently on the hunt for a long ball pendant necklace like the Lagos caviar but a little easier price tag. Love all your looks and this new series.
Hi Kay, you wear belts so well. I’ve been avoiding belts. So what are your recommendations to avoid looking like a stuffed sausage when wearing a belt. Ha… Believe me, I’ve see it around.
Try them with a front tuck and then having the back of your sweater or top draping out gently in the back. Also keep the tuck in front gentle with a little give. Really you just have to play around with them a bit. And I don’t always wear one because they don’t always work for me either. But even with a bit of tummy you can get them to work with a lot of combos, and I find it worth the effort. Thanks for reading along.
I agree that this menswear look could have been softened and brightened with a scarf tied around the neck with some brighter colors.
Love the Blessed for My Day message. You’re right not easy. I like the outfit too. Thanks for the styling ideas.
