Three Casual Fall Outfits from JCPenney

A couple of weeks ago a YouTube viewer recommended a pair of jeans from JCPenney, so I decided I needed to try them out. I’m always looking for affordable options that still look fashionable and have good quality to share here on the blog and at the YouTube channel. So I ordered a couple of pairs of the viewer’s favorite jeans along with tops and shoes. Today I’m sharing three casual fall outfits from JCPenney and when I get home from Texas I’ll shoot photos of the other outfits for you.

In these first three casual fall outfits from JCPenney I’m wearing the St. John’s Bay mid-rise straight leg jeans in dark formation rinse. These jeans fit comfortably and true to size; I’m wearing a 10. However, do keep in mind that they are a mid-rise jean. I’ve gotten quite use to the comfort of high-rise jeans myself, but I know that some readers actually prefer a mid-rise. Keep your proportions in mind.

For this first casual fall outfit from JCPenney, I topped the jeans with a black tank (similar) from my closet and this fun red and black plaid flannel shirt from JCPenney. Being a Georgia Bulldog, I love the red and black here, but this plaid flannel shirt comes in four other great color combinations, too. It fits true to size; I’m wearing a medium.

I added jewelry from my collection and my Hobo crossbody. The loafers I’d ordered from JCPenney hadn’t arrived yet, so I wore my black Chelsea boots from Talbots.

This is a really pulled together casual fall outfit for running errands and average days, but I’d also wear this to a casual gathering of friends. For the next look I took off the tank and buttoned and tucked the plaid flannel shirt. I topped it with a comfortable and versatile cotton blend cardigan.

The cardigan runs true to size; I’m wearing a medium. And it’s available in a handful of other nice neutrals. I wouldn’t say cardigans like this one are especially fashion forward, but they’re definitely practical and very wearable. If you need a good cardigan for work or just everyday, don’t shy away from wearing them. Just keep the rest of your outfit up-to-date and current.

Really I think that’s a very fun and pulled together casual outfit for fall. And I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to wear it. For the final outfit with my mid-rise straight leg jeans I topped them with a classic v-neck cable knit sweater in rumba red.

PUllover sweater and jeans

I could also wear the plaid flannel shirt under the pullover sweater, but honestly it was hot that day I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Ha! But you get the picture. These JCPenney separates mix together beautifully to create multiple casual fall outfits.

Blessed for My Day

At some point in life – preferably earlier than later – we must decide who we are living to please. If we live to please people, we will soon discover that it’s impossible to make everyone happy. Worse yet, pleasing people sometimes means doing things contrary to God’s ways and biblical standards. It’s a trap, people pleasing is.

On the other hand, if we decide we will live for the pleasure of an audience of One, we will still have struggles, but in the end we’ll have a clear conscience and know that we are on the right track. To live a life that pleases God we must trust Him. Do you trust Him enough to follow His precepts and walk in His light even when you walk alone or in a different direction from others in your life?

The fear of man brings a snare, But one who trusts in the Lord will be protected. ~ Proverbs 29:25

  1. Hello! I haven’t shopped at JC Penney in years. I always found the department store inviting and pleasant. I am ordering the jeans and red flannel shirt you are wearing in your post. Very affordable!

  2. I don’t shop at JC Penney on a regular basis but have found their ana line well made and a but more current and order jeans sometimes. I have two our if natural ( off white) jeans and they do look modern and fit beautifully. I typicalkye wear Chicos or Gap jeans as a comparison.

  3. Thank you for featuring JC Penney’s today. I shop this store because they carry current, good quality merchandise at reasonable prices, and have great selection. Good choice to showcase Penney’s!

  4. I don’t shop JCP a lot, but I do have some finds from there. I would second Paulette’s comment that the natural-colored jeans from a.n.a. fit well and have lasted through multiple washings for me. I do find the zippers and fastenings lesser quality than brands I shop more frequently, and on my a.n.a. jewns, the fabric is slightly coarser and more loosely woven, though they are well made. Of the affordable brands, I find JCP the best quality overall, better than Kohls or the Target brands. They are worth a look for sure.

  5. I absolute love these jeans! I also like that they are midrise. I think midrise is more flattering than the other 2 options . So glad that you showcased them.

  6. I love JCP, besides the St John’s Bay jeans, I like the Liz Claiborne line. I don’t buy much anymore since I’m retired, but wore a lot when I was working,

  7. JC Penney has been my go to for years! I love their clothes and usually find something nice that fits well and lasts. I’ve been annoyed with them for other reasons but their clothes are really pretty good especially if you are on a tight budget.

  8. I used to shop a lot at JCPenney some years back, but their quality dropped for some years and the store next to my house closed also. The next nearest store is 15 miles away. But I still wanted to check out the store and I went there last month and was very happy and so bought some clothes. Its very reasonably priced and quality is good for most part. I like their St John’s bay and A.N. A brands the most.

  9. JCPenny is a go to for me for work clothes particularly Liz Claiborne. It is disappointing that so many stores have closed over the last decade.

  10. Over the years I have frequently shopped JC Pennys for mostly basic pieces. Tanks and Tees are usually more affordable and, in many colors, depending on the season. Their dresses are not as fashion forward or age appropriate as those of us following DFMD but occasionally I have found a summer dress that worked. Sweaters are usually available in seasonal colors and good for casual basics. The Liz Claiborne line often have pieces that can work with separates outfits. Fit is usually true to size (I’m a 10/M). Overall, JC Penny quality is not up there with Nordstrom, but good enough if looking for a seasonal piece that may not make the cut in following years.

  11. Yes i do shop JCP. We don’t have stores like Dillards or Macys or Nordstroms here. I would love more from JCP and Kohls. We are so limited on where we can shop here.

  12. I am 5’11”, so I shop Penny’s specifically for the St. John’s Bay jeans in tall sizes. I wear a tall size 8 and the mid rise actually looks like a high rise on me. About an inch or so higher than those look in your picture. They are comfortable and they wash up well. I hang them to dry. I have them in mid wash and black and will probably order the dark wash as well. I bought them because my skinny jeans are out of style and I wanted to try the straight leg style to see if I liked them before making a bigger investment. But I like the quality and fit of these jeans and find myself reaching for them often. That’s about all that I buy from Penny’s. I have to be careful because another tall brand that they carry only has a 32″ inseam and I need a 33″ inseam.

  13. Always love your devotion messages. The mid rise jeans look good on you because you have long legs. Mid rise makes my legs look shorter. I only buy high rise now. I used to buy a lot of clothes at JC Penny’s a long time ago. They had fashionable petite clothes but not so much the last ten years. Last year I bought St. John Bay bootleg jeans. I went up on size because of the mid rise waist. It was a mistake because they stretched out a lot after only an hour. I had to give them away. That was my last buy from them.

  14. Thank you for making me aware of these jeans. I wear a size 6 in high rise jeans. Because these are mid rise I sized up to an 8 and they are a perfect fit! I think these jeans are well made and a great value for the price.

  15. I ordered them in tan after reading the YouTube comment-can’t wait for them to arrive! Thanks for styling, Kay!

  16. Kay,
I have just recently started following you for the last few months. I wish I had known about your blog sooner. You are amazing! I love your style and fashion advice. I love your Bible verses and Christian writings. You absolutely speak from the heart!

I do shop at JCPenny and Belks. Mostly because those are the stores in the next small town. I live in a very rural area. The JCPenney cloaked their brick and mortar however I still shopped online. I shop JCPenney because they carry talls or longs. I am tall and it sometimes difficult to find pants and blouses that are long enough in the sleeve and leg.

I have prayed for you at your conference. I think you have brought wisdom and classic style to the conference! Thank you so much for giving style advice that is classic and modern. I appreciate your work. I also love the other sweet people that follow you and their kind texts and responses. We need more love in this world that your site has.
Thank you for your hard work, style advice, and Bible truths.
    Sincerely, Karla

    1. Hello Karla, Thanks so much for taking the time to drop in a comment. It’s nice to meet you and I appreciate your kind and encouraging words. Thanks for the prayers, too. It was a good conference and I felt the presence of the Lord with me. Blessings!

  17. I’ve been making more purchases at JC Penney’s than ever before. I have found some very appropriate midi length church dresses there. The brands were perceptions, a.n.a, and Saint johns bay. I also found some St. John’s Bay brand casual crinkle shirts in fall colors. They washed up very nicely when hand washed in line dried.
I found some St John Bay cargo pants that had back elastic in the waistband. I have previously purchased some Liz Claiborne cargo pants in lightweight material and various colors for the summer. I discovered that Macy’s and JCPenney’s both sell the MSK dress brand, but they were almost twice as much at Macy’s. I am lucky enough to be in a location where I can shop from two different JCPenney stores, each within a 7 mile range, so I can go to the store and try on the items. I’ve also discovered that if you order the items online and pick them up in the store, you get an even higher discount. Thank you for highlighting. The JCPenney store is another option for women in their 50s and 60s and beyond. I enjoyed your latest posts so very much! I think it’s very important that you highlight a variety of stores, for those of us that are retired and watching our budget.

  18. Hi Kay , loved these casual and comfortable 3 outfits , they look good . Mind I do also like that longer length cardigan . The red of the shirt and the v sweater really looks good with the denim jeans . Im just gutted JC Penney don’t ship to the UK. Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration for us ladies and also the grace you have in acknowledging the recommendation of one of the ladies who follows your Blog. Loved your BFMD too , something to really think about

  19. I do shop at J C Penney. There is a store in my small town, and I like to order Tall sizes, then return (if necessary) through the store’s customer service counter for free. I am 5’10” so I’m on the cusp of Tall sizing, but I think Tall sizes give me a better fit in long/sleeve shirts, coats, and full-length pants.

  20. ‘Hi Kay. I shop a lot at our Penney’s . They have a large selection of cute things . I really love the sweater with the flannel shirt . I thought it look great. The Tx fair is going on in Dallas, If the the fall like weather continues I will wear that combination you and I have the same taste in clothes. I love the way you pull things together.

  21. I shop at JCP fairly often. I love the St. John’s Bay T’s and have multiple colors. They are great quality, fit me well & are great to combine with cardigans for my business casual office with skirts, especially my denim skirts.

  22. I used to shop a LOT at JCP, but, honestly have not in the past 10 years or so. I have enjoyed perusing their site again with your blog! I used to get my essentials pretty much exclusively from JCP… tees, jeans, workout wear. I am going to try a few pieces that you have styled here to see what I think of their quality, once again! I appreciate the commenters pointing to ANA and St. John’s Bay….I had forgotten those staple brands. Thanks for your blog, Kay!
