Happy Friday! It’s once again time for me to share my weekly review of real life outfits. As you might expect, the weather was all over the place this first week of spring, so my daily outfits reflect that. I’m so ready to be “unleashed” to wear all the spring things!

How This Works

Because we’re always onboarding new DFMD community, I think it may be a good idea to quickly review how these posts work. These are my real life outfits from my own closet. Because it’s the beginning of a season, many of these things are available, but some may not be. When I can locate one quickly I’ll share substitutes and/or more economical options. But if I don’t provide one and you’d like for me to, just ask.

I try to focus on how I styled things and why I wore what I wore rather than product details here. But if you need to know more about a piece, just ask in the comments.

My Vitals: I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 160 these days. I’m wearing some 8s and some 10s in most everything right now. My proportions are even and I’m an hourglass shape. So keep those things in mind as you review these outfits and consider how they might work for you or how you’d need to style them differently for your body.

What I Really Wore for Date Night

Last Friday James and I got out for a matinee movie and dinner. We saw The Jesus Revolution, and I can heartily recommend it. If I recall correctly, it was quite cool outside and even a little misty. But I was determined to wear one of the date night outfits I’d put together for this week’s YouTube video below.

In fact, there it is. On the left side of the video graphic! Well, I didn’t take the wrap and I wore my gingham topper instead. It was just too cold not to wear a coat.

What I Really Wore Date Night
gingham topper // ruffle blouse // jeans (similar and similar) // black belt // black Ally booties (use code KAYBOOTS for $50 off your first pair of Ally boots) // handbag // jewelry not available

I really do prefer this outfit with the cashmere wrap. That’s definitely a more “date night worthy” combination. But I am beyond thrilled that I purchased this gingham topper this spring because I’m wearing it on repeat. Since I was wearing the black and white topper, I opted for a black belt and my black Ally booties to complete the outfit. I LOVED wear this pretty ruffle blouse and jeans (similar and similar).

By the way, after the movie James and I went to a fish fry at a neighborhood Catholic church, something we had never done before. Here in the Midwest you’ll find these neighborhood fish fries all over the place on Fridays during Lent. We really enjoyed the experience and the food.

What I Wore Working Around the House Saturday

Saturday I kept things really chill since I was just working around the house. This was a no makeup day, too. My day consisted of cleaning my office and guest bedroom, doing laundry and catching up on phone calls to family.

What I Wore Saturday
joggers (similar option) // pullover // slippers

So I wanted to be comfortable. That said, I’m the kind of person who breaks out in hives if I don’t match. Hahaha! So even my loungewear is coordinated.

What I Wore to Church Sunday

Sunday we went to church and I worked with the children. Then we had lunch with friends. It was cold that day, so I wore – for hopefully the final time this year – my came cashmere v-neck sweater and black pants.

I have no idea why my black pants look blue in the photo on the right. But these are my J.Crew Kate straight leg pants, and I really love them. They run true to size; I’m wearing a 10.

What I Wore to Church Sunday

Again, I wrapped up to go outside in my gingham topper and this time I added my black and white butterfly scarf. I love colorful scarves, but this black and white gauzy scarf is turning out to be one of my smartest purchases for spring. I finished the outfit with my Rothy pointy toe flats (no longer available) and my tri-color MK satchel (now marked down).

By the way, I’m not sure that black and white gingham topper would look quite as good with this black and camel duo without the addition of that black and white butterfly scarf. That’s one of the reasons I’m loving that scarf this spring. It really ties things together nicely. Of course, that tri-color MK satchel also helps the equation.

What I Wore to Work from Home Monday

Really every day this week I’ve just worked from home. I’m getting out of here today! Ha! Monday was sunny and cold, but I determined to go with the sunshine rather than the temps. So I wore my white jeans (and here) and soft blue cotton sweater. I have laundered this cotton sweater, by the way, and it did beautifully in the machine on gentle with cold water. Then I laid it flat on a rack to dry. Now it’s only available in a golden “chamomile” color, but I think it’s lovely, too.

I love the way this soft blue looks with white jeans. And I prefer to wear my white jeans with either nude colored shoes, metallics or white sneakers. Considering the weather and my day, the sneakers (similar) seemed like the best choice. Hahaha!

What I Wore Tuesday

Monday a boatload of shoes that I had ordered arrived. So I spent the day walking around in them to try them out. Well, I did that while I did other things. Hehehe! Anyhow, since I was going to be wearing heels I decided to make the most of it and wear something a little spiffy. Ever since I recorded Wednesday’s YouTube video in this t-shirt and blazer (more economical option) I’d been pining to wear it again…for longer than an hour this time.

What I Wore Tuesday
t-shirt // blazer (more economical option) // jeans (more economical option) // sandals // tri-color MK satchel // earrings

I love wearing the same color top and jacket. I think it’s such a smart style hack that always looks polished and intentional. By the way, those Marc Fisher Calia sandals are definitely keepers for me. I probably will wear them with my new Sheec Socks for added sticking power, but they stay on my feet really well and fit comfortably. You can’t go wrong with a pair of neutral colored sandals for spring and summer. These also come in ivory, black and gold.

What I Wore Wednesday for Dinner Out

Wednesday I worked in my office and then we took photos. Hopefully this was our last freezing cold photo shoot, but who knows. After the photo session we decided to reward ourselves with dinner out. So I changed into my black Talbots Hampshire ankle pants and this black and white striped cotton blend sweater.

What I Wore Wednesday to Dinner
Talbots Hampshire ankle pants // black and white striped cotton blend sweater // satchel // blue mac (similar option) // butterfly scarf // black and tweed flats (use code KAYFLATS for 10% off) // similar earrings

I completed the outfit with my black and tweed flats from Ally (use code KAYFLATS for 10% off). And when we went out I carried my satchel and wore my blue mac (similar option) and butterfly scarf.

How I Dressed Thursday

Like I said, I’m breaking out of here today. Ha! But yesterday was just another work from home day. I wore my black Frame jeans and my Jenni Kayne cotton fisherman sweater. I love this color duo. It makes me very happy.

Black Jeans and Oatmeal Cotton Fisherman Sweater

My cotton fisherman sweater is 20% off (along with everything else at Jenni Kayne) for a short time with code RESET20.

And that’s a wrap! Thanks so much for checking in with me today. Hopefully our weather will cooperate and I can wear some more spring like clothes and get out and enjoy it, too. I hope you have a great weekend.

Blessed for My Day

As the earth awakens from its winter slumber I thought we might enjoy reflecting on the beauty of the world God has created for a couple of weeks. So let’s close this first week of spring with gratitude that God created a sustainable system for feeding His creation. Isn’t that amazing? We have such a thoughtful, wise and artistic Creator, don’t we?

Take some time to think about where your food came from today. Consider the farmers on whose land it grew, the harvesters who worked those fields, the beauty of it all and how good it taste. Think about the way it nourishes your body and fuels you for the tasks ahead. And consider how delightful it is that eating is not just a thing we must do to keep going, but is in fact a beautiful, intimate and delicious ritual that brings us together and thrills our senses. Praise the Lord for His good creation.

Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit according to their kind with seed in them”; and it was so. The earth produced vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, according to their kind; and God saw that it was good. ~ Genesis 1:11-12

  1. Hello Kay!
I found your blog a couple of weeks ago and have enjoyed it so much. I am 53 and 5’9″, so your posts and suggestions are of great value to me. I especially like your positive, encouraging writing style and how you share your faith. I look forward to many more posts from you! Take care.

    1. Welcome to DFMD Heather. I’m so glad you found your way here. Thanks so much for pausing to say hello. 🥰

  2. I’m looking forward to going downtown for our cathedral’s fish fry which is at lunch. It’s so simple, but it’s my favorite. And since it might be as high as 52° today here in Iowa, I’m thinking of what I can wear from my spring selections!

  3. Hi Kay, love the white jacket w/graphic tee and your fisherman sweater on you. Great hairstyle too. Yep we also have up and down weather in Wisconsin. Last weekend in the 20’s with heavy wind and snow, 50 degrees one day and then we’re expecting 3-6″ of snow tonight. Ha! It never gets boring. The great thing about seasons is that you get a new wardrobe 4 times a year!

  4. I love the high contrast black and white, and black, white and cobalt outfits on you as well as the scarf! Your natural hair and your eyes have that same degree of contrast and those garments have that same intensity. I have the same coloring as you (but I’m a fraction of the height) so I am excited to try those combinations for myself! When I stopped coloring my hair, I was thrilled to see the different shades of natural hair from dark to light and how my uncolored hair sparkles.

    1. I do find that my hair has a lot of light and sparkle right after I wash it. But it seems to fade on the subsequent days. Oh well.

  5. What lovely outfits you wore this week! Beautiful! Love so many of the pieces and trying to build a small capsule wardrobe for Summer. Do you do a capsule wardrobe series when summer gets here? If so! I will be looking forward to it!

  6. Hi Kay, When I saw your new hair cut I thought how cute. But when I saw you wearing it straighter I thought it becomes your face better. What can I say, just my humble opinion. Here on the west coast we do not have the Friday fish fry. Originally from the east I do miss them!

  7. Dang girlfriend, that white blazer and tee is so eye catching on you! Love everything you wore here.
I’m also a Wisconsin Catholic girl and we sure love our fish fry’s – battered up with fries in the tarter sauce, Amen! 🤭

  8. Hi Kay couple of days late here sorry , all your outfits for your “What You Really Wore “ last week , Spot on and beautifully coordinated as usual , even your lounge outfit looked Fab . Love your articles and I specially love the Blessing you choose for the end , it cheers my heart up ❤️🙏🏻Xx
