One of the questions I receive most frequently starting about this time each year is, “Can I wear socks with my loafers and jeans/trousers?” And of course the next question is, “What color or type of socks can I wear if they’re going to show?” Great questions! And I’ll be answering them more extensively in additional posts this fall and winter. But before we go any further, the answer to that first question is a resounding “yes!” Now let’s talk about the trending socks you need for fall.

The Styling Rule for Wearing Socks

I’m all for throwing most fashion rules out the window, but when it comes to styling certain items it is smart to know the current trend. Right now if you choose to wear socks with your loafers when wearing jeans or trousers, the “rule” is that you want to treat those socks like accessories, not underwear. By that I simply mean that if your socks are going to show, make the best of it. Choose socks that contrast with your shoes, as well as with your pants. Don’t try to match them to either one.

If your socks are not going to show most of the time – for instance when you’re wearing booties – then you can choose more subtle socks that blend in with your shoes or pants.

In today’s outfit – that you may recognize partially from this blog post on 8 of the Best White Button Front Shirts for Women – I’m wearing loafers and full length jeans (TTS; wearing size 30) that do show my socks a bit when I walk or sit. So I’ve chosen socks that contrast with my jeans and shoes. I’ve treated them like an accessory that adds interest to my outfit, not like undergarments that I’m trying to hide.

See the post 8 of the Best White Button Front Shirts for Women for more details on this and other button up shirts I recommend.

So whether it’s fall or winter, when you wear socks that will show, treat them like an accessory. Now let’s talk about one of the most fun sock trends for fall!

The Trending Socks You Need for Fall

During the fall, while it’s still a little warmer but you’re ready to add a sock to your jeans or trouser and loafer outfit, try the new trending socks: sheer, patterned socks. You’ll look so modern and chic if you accessorize your jeans outfit with contrasting ankle socks that are sheer and feature a subtle design, like polka dots, stripes or animal print.

I especially love to wear white or ivory socks with jeans and loafers. I just think it’s such a smart choice, and you’ll never go wrong with this neutral. But my sheer dot ankle socks do come in other colors, such as black, navy, pale blue, pink and coral. A color could be a fun choice if you’re using them to bookend an outfit that features that same color up top in a sweater, top or jacket.

But white or ivory socks always work. Think Diane Keaton, God rest her soul. She definitely left her mark, not just in the roles she played, but in her fashion sense, too. And we frequently saw her wearing loafers with trousers, white socks peeking out at the hemline. Such a fun and current style.

But the trending socks for fall are the sheer socks, often found with subtle designs. I’ve collected quite a number of them for you to consider in a shopping widget at the bottom of this post. I have the Bombas pointelle calf socks which are thicker but still sheer, and I can tell you they fit nicely and stay in place. The only others I can speak confidently to are the sheer dot ankle socks I’m wearing, and they do stay put very nicely.

Like I mentioned, we’ll definitely talk about socks more in the future. But today I simply wanted to share these trending socks for fall. When the temperatures drop, many of us will be ready to opt for something more substantial. But meanwhile, I’ll be sporting these trending socks for fall.

Sheer ankle socks are trending this fall, but in another few years you may be tossing them from your drawer. That’s the nature of a fashion trend. There’s no harm investing a portion of our budget in it, but we realize that it’s a passing fad.

On the other hand, if we invest our lives in things that we hope will make us feel satisfied, loved, purposeful or significant other than our relationship with the One true God, we forsake the opportunity to fully know God’s steadfast love. We trade in what is real and permanent and deeply satisfying for that which is a cheap and faulty substitute. I don’t mind encouraging you to consider a pair of sheer ankle socks to look cute and up to date. But friend, do not waste a minute or a dime on an idol that promises what it cannot deliver. Instead, think about how you can more fully devote yourself to knowing and loving God today.

Those who pay regard to vain idols
forsake their hope of steadfast love. ~ Jonah 2:8

    1. I personally do not like to wear socks with other flats. But you can if it suits you. I do think the sheer socks would be the best option if you want to wear socks with flats.

  1. I do like the sock look with loafers so think I’ll give it a try this Fall when the temps lower. Especially with the longer length jeans. The older I get the more I like comfort and to be warm. lol
