Button Front Shirt Outfit Ideas for Fall

I was a little late to the game, but now I absolutely love wearing a great button front shirt with jeans or trousers on a fall day. Add a completer piece and you have a classic outfit formula that’s always simple but never boring. Earlier this week I shared eight of my favorite button front shirts for women. So today I’m sharing how I styled a few of those shirts with favorite jeans and jackets or cardigans. Maybe these will inspire your own button front shirt outfit ideas for fall.

Classic Blazer and Full Length Jeans

Nothing looks more timeless and easy on the eyes than a classic button front shirt worn with full length jeans and a blazer. Of course, you can interpret this outfit formula so many ways using the pieces in your closet.

blazer// white button up // jeans c/o // purse // booties // similar belt

Here I’ve worn my white Lands’ End shirt with a camel J.Crew blazer and my L’Agence Scottie wide leg jeans.

For this outfit I kept my choices classic and minimal. That means each piece needs to be elevated and feel a little special. But classic pieces worn in modern ways will always look effortlessly chic and pulled together.

That raw edge hemline is still in style this year and I’m loving it. That makes getting your jeans to just the right length so easy. Just use a tape measure and a good pair of sewing shears to cut them to the desired length. If you’d like to prevent the edge from unraveling too much, a little Fray Check should take care of that.

blazer // button up shirt // jeans c/o (or here in other washes) // purse // sneakers // bracelet // necklace // earrings

Here’s a similar outfit but with subtle changes. I’ve worn the Frank & Eileen striped Eileen shirt with my dark wash Frame Le Slim Palazzo jeans with a patch pocket.

My Madewell blazer has shades of black, grey and brown, so it’s a truly versatile blazer. I even took this jacket with me on my Adirondacks fall getaway, wearing it on some of my travel days.

And I finished that outfit with my Rag & Bone sneakers. Such a fun outfit formula to work with a button-up shirt this fall.

Button Front Shirt Outfit with Juxtaposition

Next I’ve paired a less traditional button front shirt with jeans and a trending barn jacket. This outfit is full of juxtaposition that keeps the look interesting and modern.

jacket c/o // white shirt // jeans c/o // booties // purse // similar belt // bracelet // necklace // earrings

The lacy white shirt from Sezane stands in stark contrast to the cropped length barn jacket. But this is the modern way to wear these trending, classic jackets. Any time you create a little juxtaposition in your outfit try to have two elements of one aesthetic and at least two of the other.

So here my shirt and suede boots are a little elevated, while my barn jacket and raw edge jeans are more earthy.

These are the Mother the Kick It straight leg jeans in blue medium wash. They’re a super comfortable classic jean with an appealing high rise. I sized up to a 31 in these, as I usually do at Mother.

A Non-Traditional White Shirt with an Elevated Cardigan

You may remember this Cissa Daily shirt from Tuesday’s blog post. Be sure to check out the post for the details, but this shirt is anything but traditional when it’s styled using the extra buttons.

cardigan c/o // white shirt c/o // jeans c/o // booties // purse // bracelet // necklace // earrings

I’ve worn the Daily under an M.M. LaFleur cardigan that is one of their hallmark pieces. They carry this luxurious classic in several colors, but I love this latte shade.

By the way my beautiful suede satchel is a new purchase. And I’m loving it! This husk shade is so pretty and versatile that I also purchased these boots in the same shade. They fit so nicely true to size, and they’re a nice nod to the Western trend without being over the top.

Grey Jeans with a Beige Faux Leather Blazer

blazer c/o // white button up shirt // jeans // booties c/o // similar belt // similar purse // bracelet // necklace // earrings

Ooh! Here’s a personal favorite of mine. I just love grey jeans. These Paige Sasha jeans in smoky grey run true to size; I’m wearing a 30 very comfortably. You can pair grey jeans with camel, brown, black, cognac and ivory.

But here I’m wearing the jeans and my Citizens of Humanity Kayla shirt with a smoky taupe faux leather blazer from Chico’s. This jacket is such a winner. I love how it is fitted at the waist, but also relaxed and slightly long.

Since the grey jeans, white shirt and smoky taupe blazer were so light, I added a little intensity with camel accessories, but black would work nicely here, too.

Do you love wearing a button front shirt? Or are you considering giving them a go? Hopefully today’s post provided a little style inspiration. Thanks so much for stopping in!

Blessed for My Day

This, sweet friend, is my prayer for you today:

I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.  ~ Ephesians 1:16-21

  1. Liked all your outfits. I love blazers and sweater blazers. Hard to choose which one I liked best, but the plaid one in your 2rd outfit might be the one. I bought the blazer and absolutely love it! Wore it for the first time yesterday, with the brown tee from Madewell and my light tan endless pants from Athleta. Love those pants! I have 3 pairs now, Mushroom or tan, black and the new berry colored. As usual your BFMD is right on. Have fun!

  2. What a beautiful picture and the place you stayed looked so pretty. I live on the West coast so never get that far East. Best time of year to travel there with the leaves changing. I live the outfits you styled. So classic and I like that blazers are still in. Maybe not like a few years when trending but still in. Have a great rest of your trip. Can’t wait to hear about it on the blog.

  3. Awesome way to style jeans, button downs and jackets! I am already figuring out how to use my button downs, jackets, shoes and bags with my jeans. By the way, two of my button downs are patterned, one is white and I am considering adding a striped button down to my wardrobe. Thank you!

  4. All the outfits are great looks! I’m personally not a fan of a barn jacket, but I’d sub in a leather jacket instead. 🙂

  5. I have button-up shirts that I tend not to wear because they seem too “dressed-up” for the way I live but with jeans and a knit cardigan (I have two from J. Crew, more relaxed for me than a blazer) I think I could wear them. I just have to commit to ironing them! The photo at the top of this post is just beautiful and I hope the rest of your vacation is wonderful.

  6. Kay-
FYI-The link for the Chicos faux leather blazer goes to their sweater blazer. I did find the actual faux leather blazer of their website, and like its looks better than the sweater blazer! Thanks for all the research you do, and I appreciate your BFMD!
