It’s going to be FREEZING here next week! So I thought we better turn our attention to winter dressing before we’re caught out in the cold. While the type of coat you need in your wardrobe definitely varies depending on your lifestyle, location and personal style, I think it’s smart to think in terms of the colors you need your coats to be. So today I’m teaming up with Kohl’s, where you can always find affordable options from the brands you love, to share the three coats you need this winter…color-wise.

Red Coat

Have you guessed the three colors I think we all need for our coats? Well, I don’t actually have three specific colors in mind. Instead, I think we do need coats, especially if we wear them frequently, in three types of colors. I suggest you have coats in two neutrals – one dark, like black or dark grey or navy, and one in a lighter neutral, like camel, beige, ivory or soft grey. And then I think it’s smart to have one coat in a pretty color that you wear frequently.

Black Coat

If you have coats – in whatever styles work for your lifestyle – in those three types of colors, you’ll have the outerwear you need to create polished winter looks with the outfits you love wearing this time of year. Today I’m showing you how different colors of coats can make the same streetwear look completely different.

In the past I gave little thought to how my winter coats would work with my outfits. I just purchased coats I thought looked nice, but didn’t consider how they coordinated with the other clothes in my closet. Now I always make sure I have these three types of colors (selected from my personal neutrals and colors for the season) so that I don’t sabotage my outfits when I add a coat. Instead, my coats actually make my winter outfits look more striking.

Black Coat

Today I’m sharing three coats from Kohl’s. Above you saw my black double-breasted peacoat. It’s extremely warm and cozy. It has all the fisherman vibes! Oh, and the peacoat is also available in plus sizes. I styled it, as I’m styling the next two coats, with these black slacks and a camel sweater and a red ribbed turtleneck. I finished all the looks with these great black block heel booties. (Everything fits true to size.) Did you notice how the black peacoat looked equally great with the camel sweater and the red ribbed turtleneck, but the completed looks were very different?

Camel On Camel

I didn’t bother to create a monochromatic look with the black double-breasted peacoat, but I did with the next two. I love layering a coat over the same color of top or sweater. I think this just intensifies the impact and is so striking. Above I’ve layered a camel single-breasted faux wool coat from Nine West over that camel sweater. So chic!

And below I’ve created a similar monochromatic look with a red double-breasted wool-blend coat from London Fog over the red turtleneck. Notice that the color of the coat and the color of the top do not have to be exactly the same for this style formula to work beautifully.

Red Coat and Red Turtleneck

Also note that I added a red shoulder bag for even more emphasis. If you’re interested in creating a similar look with red, consider this similar shoulder bag and this more economical option.

When you have coats in the right colors for your wardrobe, you can create multiple striking outfits like these without a lot of thought.

And if you’ve chosen those coats well, you should also be able to wear them with contrasting neutrals and colors in your wardrobe, too. Below I’m showing you my camel single-breasted faux wool coat with the red turtleneck. Yes, we have three colors in this outfit, but it all feels very cohesive and easy on the eyes still.

Of course these formulas work with jeans and other pants, too. But I chose to share them with black slacks because I think most of us also need these essentials in our closet.

Pants

And these black block heels boots work so nicely with all of my coats, too. It’s important to think about these pairings when we’re selecting our outerwear for winter.

Isn’t it interesting how I just wore one pair of black slacks and black block heel booties with two different tops, but I have half a dozen different outfits because I have coats to pair with them in various ways? Which was your favorite pairing? Or do you, like me, just love that you can have so many striking looks with such few pieces?

Blessed for My Day

How do you prepare for Thanksgiving? I’ve already laid out my clothes to pack for our trip to our son’s. And my husband braved the grocery store yesterday to purchase the ingredients we need for the pies we are taking. My dad texted me my mom’s recipe for chocolate pie. So all I have to do today is bake the pies and pack up. I’m so ready for Thanksgiving.

But wait. I think there’s much more important things to do in order to have my heart in the right posture for this holiday. Sure the food and festivities are fun and important. After all, saying thanks together is truly a beautiful part of this season. But let’s not forget to also prepare ourselves spiritually for this occasion. We can begin by praising God and giving Him genuine thanks even as we do the baking and setting of tables, the packing and traveling and joining of hands. Let’s praise the Lord so passionately this week that He truly moves into our lives and makes Himself known. Oh my, we sure could use that!

Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! ~ Psalm 95:1-2

  1. Great post! I have all of these types of coats in my coat wardrobe – light gray pea coat, red car coat, and cobalt blue dress coat – all in wool. Plus puffer coats and lighter options as I currently live in Southern California. Depending on the weather where I live or where I travel to, I am set. Love the red coat on you! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family!

  2. Such nice coats! I am thinking of replacing my black coat as it is really old and worn. I love the idea of having a red coat for the holidays and Valentine’s Day.

I’m making a chocolate pecan pie for Thanksgiving. The recipe has been in our family for awhile and everyone loves it! It has maple syrup in it.

Have a lovely Thanksgiving everyone! Jesus reigns!

  3. Oh dear, I already have 4 red coats but I love that red double breasted one you are wearing. And I have Talbots red plaid gloves from a couple of years ago but they have them again this year. They go good with my red coats but also my black puffer coat for when it gets really cold in Michigan.
Have a safe trip and a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

  4. As always, such wonderful, practical — and beautifully realized – advice! This color palette mirrors my own, except that I can never stop at 3 (or 4, or 5, or 6, etc.!). Your taste is impeccable, and I love the red bag! Best wishes, always!
