Talbots January 2023 Try-On Session

Welcome to Dressed for My Day! It’s been a while since I’ve snapped photos while trying clothes on at one of our favorite retailers. So I spent an hour or so at Talbots yesterday trying on clothes from their newest collections, both the January set and the mini-collection for Valentine’s Day. Keep in mind that I tried on about 30 pieces of clothing and I was putting together combinations on the fly. Plus, sometimes the piece I would have liked to have tried with a particular item or another was not available in my size. So while I did try to put things together that worked at least a little bit, the point of this Talbots try-on session is really to focus on sizing and fit, not so much how I styled the items.

Sizing and Fit Information

Just so you’ll know how to gauge the sizing of items I’m trying on, I’m 5’8″, weight about 158, have even proportions and an hourglass shape. I pretty much consistently wear a size 8 in pants, coats and dresses, and size mediums in everything else at Talbots, and that’s all I tried on for this fitting room session. But I’ll let you know how things fit as we go.

I carried my own shoes to try on with everything, but sometimes I’m just in my sock feet. Let’s go!

Talbots January 2023 Try-On Session

Hearts Mockneck Pullover & Straight Leg Jeans Rio Wash

Let’s start with the one thing I brought home from this try-on session, the Hearts Mockneck Pullover. (I might have purchased more, but everything was full price in the store yesterday, so I limited my purchases to this one sweater.) I love the length of this sweater. Talbots seems to have joined J.Jill in having really long sweaters in the last couple of years, and I’m not a fan. So I love it when I find one that is a little shorter and more fitted like this Hearts Mockneck Pullover.

The Hearts Mockneck Pullover fits true to size; I’m wearing a medium. I’m wearing the light to mid weight 53% Cotton, 30% Polyester, 17% Nylon sweater with the Straight Leg Jeans Rio Wash. I wore the similar Straight Leg Vista Wash jeans into the store yesterday, so I don’t need these light wash straights. But light wash jeans are very in and will definitely work nicely for spring. I love Talbots straight leg jeans, and these Straight Leg Jeans Rio Wash fit true to size for me. They do run long, but that works for my 5’8″ frame (as long as I’m wearing a little heel). Just take that into consideration for your own height. These classic jeans do also come in Curvy Fit and Plus Size Exclusive Curvy Fit and Plus Size Exclusive.

Hearts Mockneck Pullover & Slim Ankle Jeans Panama Wash

Below I’m wearing the same sweater with the Slim Ankle Jeans Panama Wash. I do like Talbots’ slim ankle jeans, too. I find them to fit just a little snugger, but still true to size. And they are very comfortable. The rise is slightly lower than that of the Straight Leg Jeans, but still not low.

And these particular Slim Ankle Jeans Panama Wash have a fun dark shading down the side of the legs. This kind of fading is really nice for illusion dressing, meaning they create the illusion of a more narrow leg and hip.

T by Talbots: The Everywhere Pants & Cool Slub Active Tee

Next I tried some T by Talbots athleisure pieces. I struggled a bit to find separates that would coordinate in my size, so this first outfit (if you can call it that) is comprised of two pieces I probably would not really wear together. I just needed to show them to you, so I threw them on. Ha!

I’m wearing the Cool Slub Active Tee in navy. It fits comfortably to a little roomy true to size. It’s also available in white and black. It also comes in petite sizes. Most of Talbots’ clothing is available in a good range of sizes and in petite and plus sizes, by the way.

While I love Talbots’ Everyday Stretch Straight leg pants and their Out & About stretch joggers, I’d never tried on The Everywhere Pants. They are definitely shorter, I guess ankle length, and a little boxy. They fit true to size, but very roomy. You might want to size down. I’m wearing them in navy, but they’re also available in black and dark grey. They’re available in misses, petite, plus and plus petite.

T by Talbots: Cool Slub Active Tee & Everyday Stretch Leggings in Bias Texture & Cozy Brushed Terrain Jacket

The Everyday Stretch Leggings in Bias Texture fit a little differently than the tech stretch leggings I’ve gotten from Talbots in the past. They fit really nicely, but the waistband was a little unyielding and hard to get on over my legs and hips. But once they were on, they felt great. I do have wide hips though. So there’s that!

The Cozy Brushed Terrain Jacket is a nice one for running errands or getting in and out of a fitness class. It runs true to size.

T by Talbots: Cool Slub Active Tee & Performance Interlock Leggings & Brushed Tech Fleece Zip Hoodie

I think the dark cornflower blue Performance Interlock Leggings and the coordinating Brushed Tech Fleece Zip Hoodie are a nice option for the woman who wants a coordinating set. They’re both very comfortable and fit true to size.

The Performance Interlock Leggings have nice stretch and go on nicely. In my experience, Talbots workout leggings hold up very nicely. I’m still wearing the ones I purchased several years ago. I wash them in the machine, but I put them on a drying rack to dry. I don’t put any of my workout clothes in the dryer. In fact, I don’t put much of anything of mine in the dryer!

Johnny Collar Pullover in Simple Stripe & Straight Leg Vista Wash jeans

Obviously this photo was not taken yesterday. But I wanted to show you this Johnny Collar Pullover in Simple Stripe that I’ll be wearing in an upcoming video. They didn’t have either the blue or oatmeal and terracotta sweater in a medium in the store yesterday for me to show you. This 100% cotton sweater can be worn now, especially in warmer climates (or on unusually warm days like we’re having today!), but it will be a dream in the spring.

I had hoped to show you this Johnny Collar Pullover with one of the colorful shirts (further down below), but I think they do that on the website anyhow. It comes in petite, misses, plus and plus petites. And you’ll find similar sweaters in pretty solids HERE.

Denim Snap Front Shirt & Shaker Stitch Cardigan & Straight Leg Jeans Rio Wash

I also have this Denim Snap Front Shirt at home and it will be in that same upcoming video. But I wanted to include it in this try-on session because I like it so much. I’ve worn Talbots button up denim or chambray shirts for years. But I love that this one has snaps. You know I sometimes struggle with shirts like this being too tight in the upper arms, but this one feels really nice on. It fits true to size.

I topped the Denim Snap Front Shirt with a Shaker Stitch Cardigan in rattan. This 82% Polyester, 16% Acrylic, 2% Wool cardigan runs true to size and is available in misses, petite, plus and plus petite fits. It’s also available in peach blush and indigo blue. This is one of the few outfits I put together that I actually like. Like I said, I was really just trying to show individual pieces for the most part.

Wide Leg White Jeans & Splendid Paisley Shirt & Easy Chic Cardigan

Next I tried the Wide Leg White Jeans. They fit nicely true to size (wearing an 8), but I personally wish they were a touch longer. I really prefer wide leg pants with a little bit of a heel, but I could only wear my flats (from Talbots, but no longer available) with these. But if you like or want to try the wider leg silhouettes, these Wide Leg White Jeans are a nice pick. They hit just below the belly button on me, pretty much at my true waist.

I’m wearing the Wide Leg White Jeans with the Splendid Paisley Shirt and Easy Chic Cardigan in pistachio green. They both fit true to size. This is probably not a look I would actually wear, but it’s not bad either.

Slim Ankle Jeans Panama Wash & Whimsical Tile Shirt & Boucle Half-Zip Pullover

But here’s another combination I do indeed like. I’m again wearing the Slim Ankle Jeans Panama Wash, this time with the Whimsical Tile Shirt. I actually plan to purchase this shirt when they offer another discount. Today these new items are all full price, unfortunately. But watch for a good deal soon. I’ll keep you posted!

I topped the look with the Boucle Half-Zip Pullover. I’m not crazy about this particular knit, but I do like how it looks. The sweater is VERY stretchy and I’m a little concerned that it might lose its shape easily. But it is lightweight and very soft. I think it would be nice by itself, too. Consider sizing down if you plan to wear it alone without a shirt underneath.

Splendid Paisley Shirt & Cable Knit V-Neck Vest & Wide Leg White Jeans

Next I topped the Wide Leg White Jeans with Splendid Paisley Shirt and a blue Cable Knit V-Neck Vest. This vest is definitely a little chunkier than the ones Talbots sold last spring or fall. It does fit nicely true to size, and I never tried it on alone, but I imagine you could easily wear it that way, too.

I think I would prefer the vest with slimmer fit pants or jeans. So don’t rule it out. Since it is a little blousy and chunky, I don’t think the vest looks its best with the Wide Leg White Jeans. I had actually tried to try it on with some slimmer fit white jeans or natural colored ankle jeans, but they didn’t have any in my size in the store. (I do own both of those jeans and love them!)

Woven Hem Mockneck Pullover & Knit Wide Leg Pants

Now here’s another combination I don’t especially like together, so put the pairing aside to focus on the pieces. I was surprised how much I like the Woven Hem Mockneck Pullover. I think it would look very nice over straight jeans or pants. I would only wear it over full length pants or jeans, however, to create the best proportions. The Woven Hem Mockneck Pullover is very comfortable, feels great on and runs true to size. If you are wide across the hips or thighs, however, keep in mind that the shirt peeking out from under the sweater will draw focus to this area.

I had tried the Knit Wide Leg Pants before and knew I liked them. These pants feature a side zip and button to create a flat front. They have a lot of stretch in them and are a nice weight of fabric. I think you could definitely wear them now and later. You’ll see more of them below, but the pants do run true to size. They also are a little longer than the white jeans above, so I can wear a little heel with them.

Knit Wide Leg Pants & Smocked Cuff Popover

Below I’m wearing the Knit Wide Leg Pants with a Smocked Cuff Popover, which I feel is a little better match for these pants. This 100% Viscose popover feels silky soft and has a nice drape. It fits true to size and comes in petite, misses, plus and plus petites.

I especially like the smocked cuffs on this popover. They feel comfortable and add a nice detail.

Smocked Cuff Popover & Barely Boot Jeans Moontide Wash

I’d ruled out Talbots bootcut jeans several years ago becuase they were never long enough for me. Well now their Barely Boot Jeans Moontide Wash are long enough to accommodate a small heel with my 5’8″ frame, but they are too tight. Hmm. I mean I could barely button these up in my usual size 8. But they do look nice!

They didn’t have the Barely Boot Jeans Moontide Wash in a size 10 for me to try, but hopefully that would fix the fit issue. I did notice that several other reviewers on the website commented about a similar sizing issue, but others seemed to find them to fit nicely true to size. If you want a very slight bootcut, these Barely Boot Jeans Moontide Wash are good ones to try. I love the dark wash.

Smocked Cuff Popover & Straight Leg Jeans Starlight Wash

But next I tried the Straight Leg Jeans Starlight Wash. These are a very dark wash straight leg jean. It is very smart to have a good dark wash jean in your closet because they really dress up a look and can be so versatile.

The Straight Leg Jeans Starlight Wash runs true to size and is a similar length to the other straight leg jeans above. I may end up getting these, too. I agree with a few others I’ve seen who say that Talbots jeans are a “best kept secret.” I think their quality is as good as most high end denim I’ve tried. And the price is much better. They keep their shape and don’t stretch out with wear.

Portland Trouser in Faux Denim & Multi Stripe Crewneck Tweed Sweater

Now here’s another “outfit” I wouldn’t really put together. These are just the last two pieces I needed to share, so I threw them on. I was exhausted by this point. Ha! I think the Multi Stripe Crewneck Tweed Sweater is a little boxy for my taste, but it does fit true to size.

I like the fit of the Portland Trouser in Faux Denim, and I think this is a pant worth trying. But I wish they ran a little longer. I think with a closer fitting top the Portland Trouser in Faux Denim would make a really nice work pant. They are stretchy and comfortable, but also very polished looking.

Well, that’s a wrap! Today (Thursday) these new items are all full price at Talbots, but let’s hope they have a deal soon. I’ll keep you posted.
