When it comes to summer 2025 color trends, none are quite as smooth as buttercream yellow. This pale, sweet cream color doesn’t scream for attention, but instead it makes a subtle statement that is understated and oh so chic. But since many of us may not have a lot of experience wearing yellow of any hue, I thought I’d share a few styling tips for how to wear the on-trend buttercream yellow for summer.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog post, 5 Tips to Look More Stylish this Summer, we want to wear color strategically. That’s one of the reasons wearing any color can be a little tricky, and it’s worthwhile to put a little thought into how you’ll incorporate it wisely into your outfits.

The safest way to wear any color well is to wear only that one color against a backdrop of neutrals. I think buttercream yellow wears especially nicely with bright or soft white, creamy ivory, grey, navy or black. And you can also safely pair it with some warm browns. Of course blue denim works as a neutral background for buttercream yellow, too.

My pale yellow sweatshirt is no longer available, but you can see how lovely it works with my navy side-stripe track pants. It doesn’t really look like I’m wearing two colors, but a color and a neutral.

If you just really want to wear buttercream yellow with another color, I would create an intentionally color-blocked outfit like I described in my recent YouTube video. There I mentioned that color-blocked outfits work best when the colors are near each other on the color wheel and in the same vibrancy. So with buttercream yellow I would maybe consider wearing a soft orange sherbet, a light lime green or even a pale sea blue.

But honestly, those are very iffy choices. I recommend letting the on-trend buttercream yellow be the star of the show against a neutral backdrop.

If you do decide to keep the look more neutral, I suggest using texture and patterns to add interest to your outfit…if you desire. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a pared back look. So the outfit below with just a creamy ivory boucle sweater vest and coordinating sandals (no longer available) is perfectly elegant.

Of course, even there I did add interest with a textured sweater vest. But elsewhere above I’ve created a similar outfit for a more casual day with my metallic sneakers.

Because gingham is also very on trend right now, I created another fun look by adding a gingham flight jacket to this simple pairing.

I think that outfit is so sporty and fun. It looks youthful without looking childish, playful but not silly. But below I’ve added a different print for another way to add interest to a buttercream yellow and neutrals outfit.

Again, adding black and white stripes to the outfit is a much safer way to add interest to the buttercream yellow outfit instead of adding another color. My striped top is definitely a winner in my book, but I found a similar option for a fraction of the price.

In order to pull the high contrast outfit together for a more cohesive look, I bookended the outfit with my black sandals and carried a black bag.

But remember, you could create similar looks by swapping in navy or even grey top, shoes and bag. The key is to keep the outfit fairly simple, allowing the pattern and the on-trend buttercream yellow have the day. What is it about juicy news that begs to be shared like a thick slab of chocolate cake served with extra forks? For some reason the minute we hear that something new and interesting has happened we feel compelled to tell others. Whether it’s hearsay or factual, mischief or achievement, positive or damaging, we’re wise to take a breath rather than share our newfound knowledge so quickly.
When you hear intriguing news about someone in your circle do you immediately spread it to others? What if the good news should have been theirs to share? Or what if you got the facts straight…but there’s more to the story? And, worse yet, what if spreading the word could do damage? A wise woman is one who has learned to keep some things to herself until she knows for sure that those things can be shared with freedom and grace.
A prudent man conceals knowledge,
But the heart of fools proclaims folly. ~ Proverbs 12:23
Kay, so often I’ve noticed the beautiful bags you carry. Can you also describe them for your fans and tell us the brands??
Hi Kathleen, I did link the bag I used here. And I’m pretty sure I do usually link them in other posts, too. You can always ask for a link to a particular item if you don’t see one. The bag I featured today is from Veronica Beard and it is currently on sale: https://go.shopmy.us/p-12644839
Thank you for the devotion today. It is a great reminder for me. Thanks for the ideas on buttercream yellow. Have a blessed day.
I like the pants and how you styled them. I didn’t think buttercup yellow would look good on me now that I have white silver hair. However I bought a buttercup yellow short sleeve sweater this week. It doesn’t look bad at all. I bought the sweater mostly because it’s just the right length that I don’t need to front tuck and it’s soft cotton. Now I like the color too. It’s going to look with my white jeans and ecru jeans yoo. I like your advice about keeping news even good to yourself. I’ve had to do that recently.
I like the buttercream pants with the white top or navy top, Buttercream is a pretty color for Spring, but I would have to wear the color on the bottom as you did or as an accessory, Nice BFMD.
Really beautiful styling! I love color so I’d be tempted to pair the buttercream with apricot or sage green, and then a neutral or two. 🙂 Excellent BFMD!
Kay love reading your blogs each day
Can you show a video on how you style your current hairstyle. Do you use a brush or is it a finger style?
Your prayer post is right on today. I think we all know this but don’t always practice. Thanks for the reminder. I love the yellow pants. They look amazing with the white top. Thanks for you daily style inspiration.
I think I asked this before, but on the intensity video could you please say what the intensity applies to whether it is the color of the top to the color of the bottoms. Also if the top or pants are high or low . Also if it applies to eyes or hair color. Can you tell I am confused ! 🤷♀️
Yes, we’ll cover all of that. Thanks for asking.
Another winning post, Kay, and since buttercream yellow has been a spring and summer time favorite of mine for a while, I was particularly delighted to see it in a “starring role” here. It’s a beautiful color and as you so aptly pointed out, it coordinates so well with neutrals. Very nice!
