While I love and wear the red-based plaids we frequently see during the holidays, my favorite plaid to wear this time of year is the moody Black Watch tartan. I’ve been wearing the Talbots Black Watch plaids for years now and I think they do it beautifully. Today I’m teaming up with them to share with you three ways I’m styling Black Watch plaid for the holidays and beyond.

Styling the Black Watch Tartan Plaid Coat
In the past I’ve stuck with safer options for Black Watch tartan plaid. But when I saw this wool blend coat I could tell it looked luxe and warm. Swoon!

Unfortunately this Black Watch plaid wool blend coat is sold out in most sizes as I write this post. But you could take a few notes on how I’ve styled it and use them to also style this tie waist shirt jacket in a similar plaid. That said, just in case your size is still available, the coat does run beautifully true to size. And it feels warm and substantial. The coat is fully lined for a silky, comfortable fit and extra warmth.

Because Black Watch tartan is comprised of black, dark blue and green, I styled this wool blend coat with my black velveteen straight leg pants. I think the black pants anchor the look nicely, but you could certainly go different directions here. These velveteen straight leg pants looks so much more luxe in person than they do on the website. They fit true to size comfortably and come in misses, petite, plus and plus petite sizes. I love that Talbots is a size inclusive brand, offering many of their styles in a full range of sizes and fits.

I topped the black velveteen pants with a cashmere turtleneck in radiant sapphire. I love the way the blue sweater pops against this field of Black Watch plaid, making the coat look even more brilliant. But don’t worry about trying to exactly match a blue sweater here. I also think this bold blue ribbed turtleneck, this tranquil blue cable knit sweater or this highland green cashmere sweater would have worked nicely here.

I completed my look with black accessories, a Talbots brooch (from a couple of years back) and some dazzling pearl stud earrings. Keeping it simple is key to letting this rich, moody plaid shine. By the way, my black leather Chelsea boots are the Talbots Tish boots, but they’re several years old. They’re my favorite boots and I have four pair!

On the day we took these photos it was a frigid 18 degrees Fahrenheit. But this outfit kept me warm enough and looking classy at the same time. Who says you have to sacrifice style to stay warm?
Styling Black Watch Tartan Plaid Velveteen Pants
I’ve had my Talbots Black Watch tartan plaid velveteen pants for several years at least. They’re a favorite I love wearing on repeat through the holidays especially. I’ve styled them so many ways, but this year I decided to keep my look dark and sporty.

In the past I’ve topped these Black Watch plaid pants with a neon green sweater and jacket, a denim shirt, a Kelly green cashmere sweater and a navy blue blouse. But I’m loving the contemporary feel of this black cashmere turtleneck topped with a black quilted down puffer vest. Bottom line, these plaid pants are more versatile and easier to style than you might expect.

The Black Watch tartan plaid velveteen straight leg pants fit even more comfortably than the solid velveteen straight leg pants. They seem to have a tad more stretch in them to me even though they are 98% cotton and 2% Spandex, whereas the solid pants are 90% cotton, 8% polyester and 2% Spandex. Also, note that they are plenty long on me, even at 5’8″. I have to either wear them with a heel or have them hemmed. But these plaid velveteen pants do come in petite, plus and plus petite, as well.

My black cashmere turtleneck is just like the radiant sapphire one above and fits true to size. I can comfortably wear a camisole underneath it, as I was on this day when it was just 15 degrees Fahrenheit outside and felt like 0 degrees. The quilted down puffer vest is so smart looking, with pretty gold hardware and a slightly cinched waistband at the back. It’s also available in indigo blue and red pop, and comes in petite and plus sizes, too.

For me, the quilted down puffer vest does run a little large. I sized down to a misses small for a good fit even when I zip and snap it closed.

I love the way this Black Watch tartan plaid outfit pulled together. But like I said, on this day it was way below freezing. And I had to head out to an appointment right after this photo shoot. So I decided to bundle up and…go mad for Black Watch tartan plaid!
Going Mad with Black Watch Tartan Plaid
Yes, I topped the Black Watch tartan plaid velveteen straight leg pants, black cashmere sweater and black quilted down puffer vest with the plaid wool blend coat. Bold? Or crazy? I vote for bold, and I wore it with confidence!

Everything still fit beautifully and the layers kept me warm. Sweet friend, if you want to wear the plaid pants with the plaid coat…go for it! If you don’t, that’s perfectly fine, too. On another day, I might not. But life’s too short not to go mad for plaid occasionally.

Blessed for My Day
I have a big announcement to make. And I figured the people who read the Blessed for My Day portion of my blog posts should be the first to hear. For our 2025 blog series I’m going to take us in a new direction. I’ll be sharing blog posts that will help us to “adorn” the “hidden person of the heart,” the inner woman. Inspired by 1 Peter 3:3-4, this blog series will share my thoughts, biblical perspectives and practical tips for developing our character so that it shines even brighter than our most dazzling earrings.
I’m still working on a title for this blog series, and I’m open to suggestions if you want to give them. But more specifically I’d appreciate your prayers as I begin to think over and plan this blog series. I want it to be down-to-earth enough to invite in women who are not necessarily believers. But I also want it to be biblical in its teachings so that it gives you real fortification. Please pray that I’m able to strike that balance so that it edifies those who read it, but ultimately honors the Lord.
Your adornment must not be merely the external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on apparel; but it should be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. ~ 1 Peter 3:3-4

Excited for your new Blessed For My Day series! Maybe something with the word adorn in it? The Spirit Of Adornment?
Love the word adorn.
Love your plaid outfits! I could see you wearing the black watch plaid ones all winter. I grew up with a Dad who loved his Pendleton plaids. I also wear and love plaid but I wear them on top and Talbots always has some very pretty plaids blouses. Thank you for all of the styling ideas!
So excited for your new blog series!! 🎉Praying now that you will find that perfect balance.
I’ll certainly look forward to your blog series. Your Blessed for My Day is part of my morning routine. 🙏🏼
So thankful for you and your work. Praying for you to honor the Lord in the new blog series and approach. I look forward to your daily emails, and especially look for your Biblical thought for the day.
Your writings are a blessing to me and so so many others.
Looking forward to blogs in 2025. Merry Christmas.
Your new blog series will be a happy addition to your already wonderful messages. While I’ll be continuing to work on my wardrobe this coming year, my real emphasis will be on growing and shining my spiritual relationship.
Blog series title: “Adorning the Heart” – that’s what came to my mind.
The black watch from Talbot is probably one of the nicest I’ve seen. That said, I’m not a plaid gal. Velvet and sparkle are my holiday thing. 🙂
Praying for your new series and the balance you desire. I’m sure you will ace it, you are a blessing to many. Love the black plaid coat, very classic.
The new series sounds wonderful–to learn how to “develop our inner beauty.” There are so many ways that you can help us women. Without inner beauty, we are just wearing clothes. But what is really precious to the Lord? That will last forever!
God bless you on this new direction. —Janie
I love the verses in I Peter 3 – the hidden person of the heart! I’m excited to see where this is going. I am looking forward to your new blog in 2025! God bless your efforts!
Kay, I just love this new idea for your blog posts….what a wonderful way to begin the new year…I am going to set my goals for this year as we study together….have a great day❤️❤️❤️
Kay you look so striking in the plaid coat outfit. Love it. I’ve always liked this plaid but haven’t seen it much the last few years. In the 90’s I had a black watch plaid dress with a black velvet collar. I’m going to check out Talbot’s for black watch plaid. I’m looking forward to your blog series. I know it will be inspiring like your daily devotional. 🙏
OHHH…..can’t wait for this! God bless you with insight and understanding and wisdom as you study and plan!❤️
Excited for your new idea for your blog series! Can’t wait to read it!
Title for the blog series “Hidden Person”. I love this verse, I try to quote it to myself as I dress for church each Sunday to remind myself what is precious in the sight of God.
Kay, I just wanted to let you know that you will be in my prayers as you develop your new blog series. I’m really looking forward to it!
Fashion can be fun and a distraction, too, but it is certainly not the most important thing – glad you will be addressing “the pearl of great price.”
Kay I’m excited for the “adorn your soul” theme! I hope there will still be some fashion advice. But will be grateful for what you can share.
I love your fashion posts Kay, but I am always most eager to read your Blessed for My Day posts at the end. You have been blessed with many unique gifts and I want to thank you for sharing them.
I am all for your new idea! After all, most of us are up there in years and it’s time for us to really be a blessing and encouragement to those around us, our family, children, grandchildren, etc. Your blog will assist us along the way. Prayers for you!
Black Watch is my fave! The first outfit…….a perfect 10! Can a person have too many plaids in their closet?! This post tells me no! You look lovely as always, thanks Kay!
