Happy Friday! I was scrambling a little for a blog post today because I had hoped to do a How I Really Dressed for My Day post, but I hadn’t taken adequate photos for that. So as I wrapped up my nail appointment yesterday morning it occurred to me to drop into the mall and try on a few things at some of your favorite stores. Readers frequently tell me they love these try-on sessions and find them helpful. So today I’m sharing a try-on at J.Crew and J.Jill.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.
As usual with these try-on sessions, please pardon the hair and horrible lighting. I did my best to get a clean background for the photos, but that wasn’t easy to do. I’m wearing my Ally booties throughout (except one time when I forgot to put them on and traipsed out to the mirror in my socks!). Yes, these booties feel great on and even worked fine walking through the mall. I had worn them for a photo shoot that morning, so that’s what I ended up wearing for the day. (Use code KAYBOOTS for $50 off your first pair of Ally boots.)

J.Crew Try-On Session
As so often happens, especially after Black Friday sales have stripped the store of inventory, J.Crew was a little low on my size. So several of the things I tried on were not the right size, but they piqued my interest. The red pleated slip skirt below is definitely too big, but I do think it would work perfectly in the correct size 10.

This is a thin, georgette maxi skirt with a partial slip underneath. It’s definitely more of a party skirt than everyday. It features a pretty, pleated waistband with a zip and hook closure in the back. The skirt also comes in black and an interesting plaid this is on final sale. This particular skirt is not final sale and it is 36% off.
The brushed cashmere shrunken cable-knit crewneck sweater, shown above and below, is dreamy and fits true to size, but it’s not on sale right now. It comes in three other colors and the brilliant berry is dreamy. I really wanted to try it on, but they didn’t have it in my size.

Here’s a case where the lighting is not doing these wide leg velvet sailor trousers justice at all unfortunately. These are the black trousers and they are really gorgeous. Definitely check them out on the website for a better view. But I can tell you that they fit really nicely true to size and maybe even a little large. I’m wearing my true to size 30 here, but since they do have stretch in them, you could probably go with your lower size if you waffle between two.
Next I decided to do a little “palette cleanse” and try on something that didn’t feel especially holiday-ish. I probably would have purchased this drapey button-up shirt in cherry-printed viscose twill if they’d had it in my size. But I’m wearing a large and it’s definitely too big.

Above I’m wearing the high-rise slim wide jean in 1996 semi-stretch in my normal size 30. I LOVE these jeans. They feel great on and look sharp and modern. I would have liked to try them on in the 29, but they didn’t have them. Definitely go with your lower size on these. They do come in other washes, too.

I also like the high-rise straight jeans above, but they didn’t have them in my size. The ones above are a size 31, and they were much too large. But they’re a great jean, again modern and comfortable. The Rollneck™ sweater in Supersoft yarn above is super cozy and a popular choice. It runs true to size; I’m wearing a medium. It’s also available in other colors, and it’s marked down significantly.
J.Jill Try-On Session
It always feels like I’m trying on so many clothes in these try-on sessions. But then when I send the photos to my assistant I realize I only have a handful of outfits to share. I do my best; those fitting rooms were stuffed with clothes! But I guess it just felt that way because they’re winter clothes and they take up a lot of room. Ha!
Anyhow, moving on to J.Jill… They’re giving you 30% off everything at J.Jill right now, with 40% off full-price sweaters, outerwear and accessories. I love purchasing their accessories as gifts.

Because I neglected to bring anything into the fitting room to try on with the button front cardigan above, I’m wearing my black cashmere turtleneck from Talbots. But the cardigan and jeans work really nicely. The jeans run true to size (wearing a 10) for a nice fit and the cardigan runs a little large. I’m wearing a small, as I usually do in J.Jill tops.
That all said, I don’t generally wear jeans from J.Jill because they’re just not the best fit for my body. Talbots jeans work great for me, these generally do not. But we’re all different, and I know many of my readers love the way J.Jill jeans work for them. I’m continuing to wear them in several outfits below.

The button-up shirt above is on the long side, as many of J.Jill’s tops are. But I think it works nicely with these slim fit jeans and longer vest. I do especially like that vest, very sporty and a nice fit. I sized down to a small in both.

Above I’m just wearing one of their long sleeve Pima cotton crewneck tees. I do think they’ve made these a little shorter than they used to, and I like that. I’m wearing a small here, but I might prefer the medium. I’m wondering if J.Jill has reworked their sizing a bit because their tops are not as big on me as they once were. And I haven’t really gained any weight since the last time I was in there trying on things in the early fall or summer. But who knows!

I really love the pullover sweater above. I’m wearing the small, but I do think I’d prefer the medium. So I’m going to say it runs true to size. It’s a nice hearty sweater that will look great for the holidays and beyond.
I know many of my readers enjoy the J.Jill ponte pants so I tried on a few of those. Below I’m wearing the wearever straight-leg trousers in camel heather. They’re a nice fit true to size. I’d prefer they were a little thicker, but if you live in a milder climate these could work nicely for the winter.

I topped the pants with the plaid button front sweater in a size small. It fits, but if I were to layer something under it, I’d want a medium. So I’m going to say it runs true to size.

Above I’m wearing those same Wearever straight leg trousers in cream. Again, they fit true to size. I do wish they made these pants a little longer. That said, they do come in Tall, but those tend to be too long for me. I should go ahead and mention, that J.Jill is a size inclusive brand with a full range of sizes in petite, misses and (usually) tall. The velvet burnout top above is a little small on me. I’m wearing the small, so I’d say it runs true to size. It’s a pretty option for a dressier top.
Probably my favorite thing I tried on at J.Jill is the high-neck sweater below. Such a pretty color and texture, and I nice silhouette. I’m wearing a small, but would probably prefer a little more oversized fit with a medium. I’d say it’s true to size.

The ponte slim leg pants have pockets and an elasticized waistband. They fit true to size and come in other colors. So that’s a wrap! Thanks so much for dropping in. I hope you have a lovely weekend. Oh, I do have a bonus YouTube vide tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Blessed for My Day
Is it hard for you to admit when you’re wrong about something. I must say, the older I get the less difficult it is. I think after 60 years of life on this earth I’m finally learning that I get it wrong much more often than I get it right. Ha! But I do still run into situations where my pride kicks in and I don’t like to confess that I made a mistake.
With God the stakes are even higher. If we can’t confess that we’ve missed the mark with Him, we’re just deceiving ourselves and the truth can’t dwell in us. But the good news is that He has promised to graciously forgive us and set us on a new path when we confess our sins to Him. Truly, freedom and joy begin when we get real about our sins before God. Don’t let the enemy of your soul ever convince you otherwise.
If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ~ 1 John 1:8-9
Kay, I have been trying to find a nice pair of pull on trousers with a pin tuck front. Those from J Jill look perfect. And by a small miracle, they still had the camel in my size (though it said almost sold out; the cream was sold out in my size). So I ordered a pair! I have never tried any of J Jill’s clothing, so this is a new one for me. Here’s to hoping they work out well! Thank you!
Just wanted to follow up and let you know I received my order (J Jill camel trousers), and they turned out to be great trousers! The fit was perfect (very comfortable too!) and they look very chic. I love that pin tuck! Thank you for highlighting them. I’ve never purchased from J Jill before, so it’s a new-to-me brand. I wouldn’t have given them a consideration if not for your input.
Sure hope you get the heater fixed soon. Thank you for all that you do for the us. Blessings.
So much fun! Thanks for the post. I particularly liked the J JILL clothing.
Good message on the devotional. I hope you got your unit was repaired so you have power. It’s tough not having heat or AC if it happens on a really cold or hot day. It’s funny you you mentioned you wish the pants were longer. I ordered two wide leg pants from Loft and I wish they were an inch longer too. I’m short and sometimes even petite pants were too long. I wonder if they’re making them shorter because so many women wear sneakers now. The cream and black pants are really nice.
