With a winter storm bearing down on us tomorrow, it may seem a little silly to even think about transitioning into spring with our wardrobe. But I fear that if we don’t start thinking about it soon we’ll find ourselves in warmer days and feeling all befuddled. Does that ever happen to you? The transition between seasons can be a little tricky when it comes to dressing both appropriately for the weather and feeling stylish. So let’s talk about how you can prepare to transition your wardrobe into spring beautifully and smartly.

Those late weeks of one season and the earliest of the next often present us with myriad weather conditions, changed plans and confusing packing dilemmas for travel. Not to mention, as we tire of one season and anticipate the next we sometimes get ahead of ourselves changing out our wardrobes, only to have to reach into storage and pull things back out for real life dressing. Let’s skip the crazies this year and prepare to transition your wardrobe into spring in a smart way that helps you enjoy the season to come while still dressing appropriately for the weather.
Let’s Get Real About Spring
Now if you live in one of the warmer climates – I’m talking to you, Southern states – Spring may indeed almost feel like summer. But even in those more balmy places, Spring weather can be very unpredictable.

So it’s time to come to terms with the fact that our spring wardrobe needs to include items that help us dress for widely varying temperatures and precipitation…all in one day. This is not the time to put away cool weather essentials like long sleeve tees and shirts, full length jeans and trousers and even booties and other closed toe shoes.

Learn to Layer Like a Pro
Spring, like fall, is the time to layer on and off throughout the day as needed. That means you need to be ready to create outfits that look complete, intentional and stylish when they’re pared down to the base layers, but also seasonal and beautiful when you’ve layered up for additional warmth.

So keep your closet stocked with lightweight layers that have personality and that work together beautifully. That’s just one more reason to lean into a self-imposed, limited color palette. I find that having fewer colors in my closet makes it so much easier to layer.
Add Spring Colors in Essential Pieces
Really the first step in taking your wardrobe from one season to the next is to shift your colors. Even now you could begin to lean into more cheerful hues. As I transition my wardrobe into spring I like to fill it with colors that reflect what’s going on in nature.

So I think earthy brown, new growth green, cheerful yellow, soft pinks, sky blues and stormy greys. The outfit I’m sharing here today makes me anticipate the fresh green buds we’ll soon see on trees and dotting the fields. But the pieces are still substantial and warm, layering on and off seamlessly.
Don’t Put Away Your Booties Just Yet
Especially if you’re in a more northern climate or live where there is a lot of mud in the spring, don’t put your booties away quite yet. You can still wear them confidently through this temperamental season and feel quite fashionable.

Keep Enjoying Your Brown Accessories & Garments
In fact this year since brown and suede will continue to trend into spring and summer, I’ll be wearing my brown suede booties well into the season. The brown will look seasonally beautiful when worn with more springlike colors, such as grass green, daffodil yellow, soft violet or Easter egg pink.

Other neutrals that will look fresh and on trend this spring include true navy and stormy grey. And the color of the year is a soft, cool ivory, so incorporating it into your outfits will serve as an easy way to transition your wardrobe into spring.
Add Beautiful Spring Outerwear to Your Wardrobe
Like fall, spring is a great time to wear that third piece. So completing your outfit with a stylish blazer or cropped jacket is certainly a smart choice. But don’t forget to add beautiful spring outerwear to your wardrobe, pieces that will stand up against the elements.

I absolutely love wearing a smart trench coat or jacket during the spring as much as possible. But you could also add a more casual rain coat or mac. Be on the lookout for more cropped length jackets to be trending this spring. But personally I’ll probably lean into longer versions that provide real protection from the elements.

Blessed for My Day
Comparing ourselves to others is never a good idea. Comparisons lead to envy, discontent, self-pity and a sense of entitlement. Then those attitudes propel us to make choices and do things that ultimately lead to our destruction and even hurt others. Plus, when I’m looking around at other people to see how they are doing or what they have that I don’t have, I’ve taken my focus off of the Lord and the path and blessings He has graciously chosen for me. It’s wasted energy that causes me to miss the best parts of my own life.
Beware the comparison trap. And when you do notice the blessings that others have, simply celebrate those things with them and for them. I’ve found that celebrating other people’s accomplishments and blessings, rather than coveting them, helps me to keep those things in perspective. I can see those things as God’s goodness in their lives and remember that He has also done good things in my life. Then I can turn my attention back to God’s plans for me and move forward with my eyes on the road ahead of me rather than looking side to side at what others have.
Yet the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, “No, but there shall be a king over us, so that we also may be like all the nations, and our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” ~ 1 Samuel 8:19-20
I’m glad you’re enjoying the time with your granddaughter. My mom used to bake cookies with my sons when they were little too. I like the green sweater with the shirt layered underneath. That’s the kind of clothing I like to wear.
I always like a navy cardigan for a winter to spring transitional piece. It pairs well with the usual spring colors of pink, yellow, grassy green.
My thoughts about transitioning to spring is to wait at least one month. If I were to wear the color I see outside, I’d be wearing white for snow. It’s becoming more seasonable, but the season is still winter: we have a week in January and then all of February when we are wearing our winter sweaters, coats, and boots — and this can last well into March. We go through this every year when retailers try to push us into a new season, but the reality is very different. Let’s bundle up and enjoy the season we’re in.
Thank you for your great advice, as always. I love the outfit you have put together and the green sweater looks so fresh. It’s always lovely to get the feeling of Spring. I like to have gloves and scarves in some pastel colours so even if it’s still cold enough to need them, I can bring some of the colours of Spring into my outfit. I’m looking forward to your further posts on Spring outfits and the video next week.
It’s so nice that you are enjoying time with your granddaughter.
Glad you are having a good time with your granddaughter. I live in a warmer state but I will be wearing winter clothes till end of February. I do a lot of layering. Stay warm and I hope you don’t loose power. That’s what worries me when we get a big winter storm.
Living in a very warm climate year round, I “create” the seasons by shifting the colors of my clothing. January, I’m still wearing winter colors. Will not start the shift to spring colors until end of February or into March.
