Welcome to Fall Denim Week 2024 at Dressed for My Day. I don’t know about you, but I’ve not worn much denim during the summer. However, with fall fast approaching I’m reacquainting myself with my favorite jeans and I’m adding a few new trending styles to the lineup, too. That has me scratching my head trying to remember what shoes I wear with which silhouettes and lengths of jeans. Anybody else? Well never fear! This week we’ll run through the most popular styles of denim and how to pair them with tops and shoes for the most stylish looks. Let’s begin with how to style straight ankle cuff jeans for fall.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

The Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

The straight ankle cuff jeans began to show up sparingly in the stores last fall, but I really noticed them surge in popularity this spring. Usually fast to adapt to new silhouettes and styles, I was a little hesitant to even try this rather quirky, inherently casual jean. But when Talbots came out with their own straight ankle cuff jean this month I decided it was time to give it a try.

Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

You’ll find this rather new trend in denim in all of your favorite stores now. The deep cuff at the base of these straight ankle jeans is not especially elongating or figure flattering. But that’s a deliberate sacrifice made to create a visual point of interest that is decidedly unique and fashion forward.

Here is a shopping widget with other straight ankle cuff jeans you might want to consider. If you just want to dip your toe in this trend, you might want to start out with a low-cost option like this Scoop Benton high rise straight ankle jean available through Walmart (online only). A few of the jeans in the shopping widget may actually be wide leg cuff ankle jeans, but they can be styled the same way.

But if the straight leg ankle jean isn’t your bag, just take a pass on this fall 2024 denim trend. We’ll cover other more traditional jean silhouettes the rest of this week; I just thought it would be fun to come of out of the gate for Fall Denim Week 2024 with a bold selection. So if you’re game (or at least curious), let’s go!

How to Style the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans for Fall

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

Because the deep cuffs on these straight ankle jeans do create a decisive line at the bottom of the jean, I think it’s smart to keep your top short or tucked. That will help you show more of the top of the jeans and create a longer leg visually.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

You can wear a cropped length or “short top” and leave it untucked so that it conceals just the waistband of the straight ankle cuff jeans. Or you can tuck a longer shirt or at least give it a gentle front tuck, draping the rest of the top toward the back over the waistband.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

If you choose to tuck or front tuck your top, I think it’s smart to also add a belt. That belt can help balance the deep cuff at the bottom of the jeans, pulling the gaze up so that the cuff doesn’t “weigh down” the outfit visually.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

Because the straight ankle cuff jean is inherently casual, it will make any top you wear look a little less elevated. So, yes, you certainly can wear a simple t-shirt and sneakers and call it a day. That’s a truly authentic pairing with these jeans. But you can also create some fun juxtaposition by wearing a more elevated top, like this tuck stitch cardigan with gold buttons, with the straight ankle cuff jeans.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

I finished that look with metallic gold slingback pumps, sort of sandwiching the casual jeans between more elevated elements. I think this is a bold, modern combination for a casual work day, ladies lunch out or girls’ night.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

You can also add a jacket over the straight ankle cuff jeans, of course. A blazer would work nicely, too, but this time I opted for a trending elevated tweed bomber jacket. Again, a cropped length jacket will generally serve you well here, pulling the gaze back up towards your face and balancing proportions. I tried these jeans with a longer blazer, thinking that might be a nice look. But this long tailored stretch blazer just really pulled the whole look down, making me look pretty sad. LOL! I love the blazer, but I’ll wear it with something else. These cuffed ankle jeans need a shorter jacket.

Styling the Straight Ankle Cuff Jeans

Finally, let’s talk shoes. I love sneakers with these straight ankle cuff jeans. They’re just a natural option and very seasonally appropriate as we head into fall. I suggest opting for a low profile sneaker like a court shoe or a field or soccer shoe. Again, that will keep the look balanced, whereas a chunky sneaker will weigh the look down at the bottom.

But other nice options include ballet flats, pointy toe flats, squared off flats and loafers or mules. Below my red squared toe sling-back flats add another touchy of whimsy (along with that leopard print top!), keeping this look with my straight ankle cuff jeans on point.

Let me know if you have any questions. I just got this jeans Friday and immediately began playing around with them, but I’m definitely still learning my way with them. Tomorrow we’ll continue Fall Denim Week 2024 with how to style wide leg full length jeans, one of the most prevalent trends for denim this year.

Blessed for My Day

I was chatting with one of my best friends recently who is also a seasoned women’s Bible study teacher. She and I both admitted that, while we’ve taught and studied many books of the Bible, we’d never seriously studied the book of Revelation. Maybe you can relate. Even for the most seasoned Bible student or scholar, this book of prophecy and end times can feel intimidating.

But recently my husband has been preaching through Revelation verse by verse, and I’m really enjoying it. James is a thoughtful and careful student of the Bible and takes exegeting it very seriously and solemnly. He’s an excellent teacher and communicator, too. I tell you all of this because James is sharing his Revelation sermons on his podcast, Discover the Bible with Dr. James Harms. Trust me, I get it if you’re just not ready to tackle this book. But I feel we may very well be ebbing very close to the time of Revelation, so I’ve finally decided to become a serious student of this book. If you’d like to also, I invite you to try out James’ podcast. You might want to start with this episode. You can listen to James’ podcast anywhere you listen to others, but I’ve linked you to his YouTube channel (it’s audio only) because I know many of you are already used to watching me there.

Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near. ~ Revelation 1:3

  1. I think this is one trend I’ll skip. As you said, it’s definitely not figure flattering at all. And, though I really hate to say it, it looks too young and trying too hard. But thanks for showing your readers all the options.

  2. I don’t like the wide leg deep cuff jean! However, I like the relaxed everyday cuffed jeans by Talbots. I think they are much more flattering.

  3. I try to stay positive and open minded. Wide leg, Cropped, and Cuffed (a wide cuff at that). This style of pants is the perfect way to make a woman’s legs look as short and fat as possible. A light wash with horizontal distressing just adds a cherry on top. I do think the look with the hat and jean jacket looks fun. I’ll give that a try with my straight leg, full length, dark wash jeans. Thank you!

  4. Hi Kay I have been wanting to try these new 2024 Wide Cuff Jeans , but at only 5’ tall I’m not sure , however I love the way you have styled them both Casual and Elevated , I might have to go with the kitten heels with mine , but I did get some of those Platform Trainers you wear , I will take your advice and get my husband to take photos of me so I can look at them and make a judgement , plus I always value my husbands opinion he is so honest but in a kind way . I have mentioned before how I love Vintage and these are just like the early 1950s jeans , I even have a pic of Marilyn Monroe wearing them casually with her navy blue Keds Sneakers . I will look forward to listening to James Podcast on ‘Revelations’ , like you he has a very compelling voice .

    1. This trend is not for me. But I appreciate your showing various ways to wear these jeans. I also find I don’t wear jeans very often. I prefer joggers or khakis

  5. Could I take a straight leg jean and cuff the bottom? I love the red shoes. I have a pair of Bass loafers in red from years ago. I’m going to add them in the rotation. Also happy to see leopard print back even though I don’t think it ever goes out.

    1. Hi Cyndi. You can create your own cuff on straight leg jeans. You’ll get the most on trend look with relaxed fit straight leg jeans and a good stiff denim that holds the cuff well.

  6. The jeans and the outfits you created with them are adorable! Unfortunately, being under 5 ft it is a style of jeans that I can’t do. But I can use the same ideas with my wide leg pants (I buy cropped regular pants and they are the perfect full length. Lol!) Thanks for the cute fall ideas.

  7. I am intrigued by the cuffed jeans, more so after seeing how you styled them. The Talbots jeans you are wearing are they tts, and is the material a thin softer jean or thicker heavier jean? Thank you for your content, always love seeing what’s out there.

    1. I’d say the denim is a medium weight and thickness. They feel good on. And they run a little large. I’m mostly wearing a 10 in Talbots pants these days, but these are a comfortable 8.

  8. This style does not work for me as many other readers have said and it looks as if someone decided to go to a party with fancy kitten heels and then decided the dress code should look more casual. Shoes do not match the jean look which I will always dislike.

  9. Kay, Thanks for the various looks here today. I’ve shorter cuffed my pants occasionally for years–to get the capri look usually. I think it looks best with straight leg pants (not the wide pants), personally. It is a great tip to keep the top shorter for balance–thanks for that.
That is great that your husband is doing the audio on Revelation. We are one day closer than we were yesterday to the coming of the Lord. The Bible study that we are doing in our local BSF this year is the book of Revelation. A slow, but steady study throughout the months will be so good for me.
I was with my daughter’s family here for lunch yesterday–that was very enjoyable. They (fortunately) live 10 minutes down the road. They are a blessing.
Thanks again. and God bless you.

  10. Though I think the wide cuff jeans look adorable on you, because you are tall, I am only 5’3″. I don’t think they would look very good on me, even though, I could cuff, but not that big of a cuff. I think that big of a cuff would make me look shorter. I wish that sweater jacket Still in the hot pink. So cut! I do have 1 from a couple years ago same color just not gold buttons.
Our pastor at church is teaching on Revelation. He told us when he started the series, that he thought God was telling him because of the times we’re in right now, to teach it on it. Good series.

  11. Interesting to see the style, but at my age, would look silly. I know you’ve previously said not to put too many trends into one outfit. I got that feeling with the new jeans style, leopard top and red shoes. Cute, but I’m undecided on that one. The red hat is a big nay from me. Sorry.
I am definitely going to listen to the Revelations series as I totally agree it is time to know. Thank you.

  12. Love your post although I will probably not try the wide cuff jean look. One question…where did you find the cute red cap?
Thanks for all that you do. I’m looking forward to listening to James’ podcast on Revelations.

  13. I enjoyed your BFMD. Revelations is very interesting and speaks to me. It is also scary. I feel that we are living in Revelations and humans as well as the earth are dying a slow painful death.

  14. Love how you styled your wide cuff jeans! I’ve been wearing mine since last fall and I’m in my late 60’s. I’m all for fashion being fun and you can wear almost anything if the style suits your personality and lifestyle, and if the fit is in proportion to your body. A good tailor might be a necessity. I love trying new trends and I hope I never stop loving to try a new color, style or accessory. Keep up your amazing work!

  15. I like the cuffed jeans because they look edgy and modern. I like how you styled them with a conservative but bright pink sweater. I’d wear them with sneakers for a more casual look since that fits my lifestyle. Can you show more edgy pieces?

  16. Sounds like a wonderful week for you last week. Glad you had a great time! Love all the fashion inspirations.❤️. I feel the same about our son when we leave him. Takes me a little bit to get back on schedule without him with us.😢 Will you be doing a post on fall make- up? I need to replace my lipstick for the fall/ winter season. Hope you have a wonderful day!

  17. Thanks for all the fun, fresh looks you have come up with. I love the jeans. I’m 4’11” and and no longer worry about elongating my body parts, possibly because I’m 82. I’m giving them a whirl!

  18. I’m with Susan this will be trend that I will not partake. Although I think it looks great on some, but not on me. Also, our women’s group is going to be studying the book of revelations in September. I’m looking forward to it a little nervous but it’s a book that I’ve always wanted to dealt deeper into, have blessed day

  19. I think the cuffed wide leg or relaxed leg jeans trend looks very jaunty. Alas, jaunty is not one of my three style words so I will not likely try this look although perhaps I will with a slimmer silhouette. I do like the outfit with the red cap, sneakers and the striped top. It’s very cute on you.

  20. I liked the jeans with flats and sneakers on you. I didn’t like them with heels. I prefer my wide leg and flare jeans. Thanks for showing us all the options.

  21. Not same Carolyn as above in comment #20. I’m a different Carolyn, the one who is petite, and wears an autumn colored palette. 🙂 Anyhow, this trend is a hard pass for me. Being petite, the ankle cuff just makes me look out of proportion. Aesthetically, it also just doesn’t suit my classic, feminine style. I love the leopard top though. 🙂 Revelation – my favorite book of the Bible (because there’s a glorious future coming), and it is the first book of Scripture I ever read.

  22. Kay, I’m petite as well, seems that is true of a lot of your readers, and just have to pass on “clown pants”. I’m only 73 Hehe but I remember well someone saying about shoes – sneakers/gym, leather/jeans and heals with skirts/dress pants and I still stick to it. The other thing is I do things, so when I wear jeans I am wearing something that I can do anything in comfortably. And that can be a lot of messy, sweaty, dirty, hairy or just plain grandkid loving stuff. Yes, a nice top is necessary, but my feet have to be comfortable too and able to move and walk without looking like I’m at my gym class. And my dress shoes will never have a pointed toe, but silver Birkenstocks, yes! I’m missing seeing your beautiful hair, it has always been an inspiration to me. And everything you do, thank you!

  23. I really like the wide cuff jeans looks and I love that you share exactly how to style them for the best looks. I am tall (5’9”) and I cuffed a pair of straight legged jeans that are on the longer side on me and I really love them now. Saved me investing in another pair of jeans and now I have multiple ways to wear this one pair, love it. I wore them with a short Jean jacket and strappy sandals and felt great!

  24. I listened to your husband’s podcast this morning while on the treadmill, and it’s fantastic! I’m anxious to listen to more episodes. Thank you for suggesting – it’s very enlightening.

  25. Ok, the deep cuff jean … I thought your last style w the leopard top and cognac belt looked really quite good! Very confident and modern. A tad French, peut-etre. Appreciate your candor about the challenges this style presents. As a 5ft3in “curvy” woman, I think I’ll need to admire this trend on others. But that last look has possibilities! You should definitely wear it again! Smashing!
