How I Really Dressed for My Day This Week

Happy Friday! We just got home from a quick overnight trip to Covington, Kentucky, to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful dinner last night at a Southern cuisine restaurant called Otto’s. After a nice lunch in the Hotel Covington, where we stayed, we rushed home to prepare for our son and daughter-in-law’s arrival late this evening. We’ll all be going to see the University of Arizona men’s basketball team play University of Cincinnati tomorrow. They both graduated from University of Arizona, and we’re all huge basketball fans. Anyhoo! I’ve rounded up my outfits from the week to share with you how I really dressed for my day.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

I like to focus on sharing a little about where I wore these outfits, how and why I styled them the way I did and maybe even what I liked or didn’t like. So I won’t necessarily call out every piece I’m wearing. But you can always find links to anything I show that is available in the captions of the photos. Just click on the word and you’ll go straight to the store’s website for more info and shopping. I’m 5’8″, have an hourglass shape and have even proportions. I’m generally wearing size mediums and 10 these days. You can assume everything runs true to size unless I note otherwise.

Friday Morning

Last Friday I had some appointments and places to go, so I spiffed up a little in this jeans and blazer outfit.

top (exact color is unavailable) // hooded dickey insert // blazer // jeans // booties not available // bag

The weather had shifted a little so that it wasn’t as cold as it had been. So it felt good to wear just a blazer as my outerwear again. I love the combinations of soft brown, dusty brown and dark chocolate brown in this outfit. This is a style uniform I could wear again and again.

Friday Night

That night we had a church Christmas party at a good restaurant. I opted for my stretch silk shirt from Quince with full length black wash jeans and a leather blazer. This felt festive and fun without being over the top. I knew no one else would be very dressed up, so I wanted more of a Friday night date look.

Like many of you, I’m sure, I’ve struggled a bit with finding wide leg jeans that really work for me. The Paige Sasha jeans are definitely my favorites because they have a not-too-wide leg and a high rise. They’re highly rated jeans for a good reason and you’ll find lots of options here. They also come in petites.

Saturday

Saturday was a stay-at-home day. I really took some good time off this holiday season, timewise and in quality. So I think I probably spent Saturday doing a little watercoloring, laundry, reading and watching Christmas movies. In fact, I believe that’s the day I watched Little Women, an annual favorite.

crewneck sweatshirt // joggers // sneakers (very limited sizes available) or similar option

A friend in our church had given me this sweatshirt the night before, so I eagerly put it on for a cozy day at home. I wore it with my black T by Talbots joggers and sneakers.

Sunday

Sunday was a rainy, cool day. I decided to try out my new Sorel weather-proof boots with a comfortable, but colorful outfit. This plaid flannel shirt and barn coat from L.L.Bean felt just right for the day.

barn jacket // flannel shirt // jeans // boots // purse C/O (use code KAY10 for 10% off at Patricia Nash Designs) // necklace and earrings C/O (use code KAY20 for 20% off at Penelope)

I had received this fun shoulderbag from Patricia Nash, so I decided to take it for a spin. It seemed a good choice with this outfit. By the way, the boots feel great and they’re currently 25% off. We have more snow coming this weekend, so I’m sure I’ll be wearing them again.

Monday

Monday I had an extensive meeting with my assistant Lucy as we did some planning for the year. Afterwards I got busy on some of the projects we had decided on, so it was just a busy work from home day. I work best when I’m dressed for the job, so I put together a simple but polished outfit of cords and a turtleneck sweater.

turtleneck sweater is no longer available in grey // corduroy pants // boots no longer in black// belt // necklace // earrings // bracelet

I accessorized this simple outfit with a belt and jewelry from Brighton. I wore my black Chelsea boots when I stepped out for a bit in the afternoon. I have to remind myself that getting dressed is a choice. This outfit felt just as comfortable as jeans and a tee, but I felt smarter and more motivated in it.

Tuesday

Tuesday turned fairly warm (in the 50s!), so I opted for my Me+Em ankle length jeans and a shirt with a vest over it. I wasn’t going anywhere, but enjoyed feeling pulled together for the day.

similar sweater vest // cotton silk shirt // jeans // ballet flats // earrings // necklace C/O (use code KAY20 for 20% off)

Nude suede ballet flats felt like the perfect way to complete this simple outfit.

Wednesday

Of course Wednesday was New Year’s Day, so I decided to wear my embellished jeans again for a little dazzle. Ha! This time I simply topped them with a red cashmere sweater.

sweater // jeans // loafer (currently 55% off- now $58.49 compared to $130) // earrings // bracelet

This outfit felt perfect for our lazy day at home, but also a little special and happy.

Thursday

It’s turned cold again, so I knew I needed to bundle up as we headed out for our little anniversary trip yesterday. You’ll actually see this outfit again in an upcoming post, but no harm sharing it now.

cashmere sweater C/O // wide leg cargo pants // button-up shirt no longer available // booties C/O (use code KAYBOOTS for $50 off your first pair of boots at Ally) // earrings C/O // bracelet C/O

I’d purchased these fun wide leg cargo pants from Veronica Beard a few weeks ago, but I needed to have them hemmed before I could wear them. They’re a sharp pair of trousers with really modern vibes, so I think they make for a really cool outfit. Just what I wanted for my special date night. I topped them with a button – up shirt and a cashmere sweater from Lily Silk.

So that’s how I dressed for my day in real life this week. Thanks so much for dropping in. Have a lovely weekend!

Blessed for My Day

Have you made new year’s resolutions? Or, maybe like me, you like to set some goals and make some plans at this time of year. I am a goal setter, but I also know that I’ll never reach my goals if I don’t also have a plan and, just as importantly, systems in place to help me work the plan.

Not only will I be working on things like my health and fitness, my business and a reading list, but I also want to improve in some aspects of my relationships, my personal response to things and they way I serve my community. I can set goals like these because I know I don’t have to accomplish them on my own. The Holy Spirit will be working from within while I do my part by cooperating with Him. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, but only if my goals are for His glory and righteousness.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age…~ Titus 2:11-12

xoxo, Kay

  1. Love this kind of post. You look great. Love the date night look with the new wide leg pants. I haven’t found or wore wide leg pants yet. At 5’3” it hasn’t been my best look. Enjoy your family and the basketball game. We live an hour and 1/2 from Portland Oregon so our team is the Portland Trail Blazers. We rarely go see them play. We are 3 hours from Seattle Seahawk football team and have gone once to the game.

  2. Kay,
Thanks for sharing your outfits from this week. You look great in them!
What I enjoy the most about these posts is that I have similar pieces in my closet and it motivates me to wear them and go to the effort to style them. I love you in blazers, but with my short curvy frame, 5 foot four, 140 pounds, I find I purchased them but then never wear them. I’m so happy “lady jackets” have come back in style because that works much better for my body. And I think the shorter length, makes me feel more comfortable wearing them

I’m excited for your style series this year; how to utilize clothes that we already own. I love shopping for clothes, but I really do not need to own more!!!!! And I have also taken very much to heart, your comments to shop for our actual lifestyle.

    Thanks so much,
    Tammie

  3. Happy Anniversary to you and James! 🎊 Time does march on doesn’t it. It needs to slow down! lol What lovely outfits this week Kay. Soo much outfit inspiration I love it! I just have to tell you I was in the grocery store this morning and a middle aged guy in line told me I looked sharp! It made my day! I did like you said and booked ended my boots and outerwear and it did look great! So thank you for that! 😀

  4. I’ve never heard of a hooded dickie! Live and learn.
I LOVE the grey cashmere, wide legged cargo pants and the jacket. Lots of what wore this week was right up my alley, but that outfit was perfect!

  5. My husband and I had Easter brunch at Otto’s last year. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Our children treated us to a Mother’s Day brunch at Hotel Covington a few years ago, very nice. I always enjoy your advice on dressing for our day.

  6. Church Christmas party and Thursday (both with and without your coat) outfits, look fantastic on you!!!

  7. Hello, Happy New Year and thank you for sharing your wonderful styles! I love them, and I found them quite the inspiration. I’m in Michigan, and it appears that the ebb and flow of the weather was similar. I loved everything, with special shout-outs to the sharp black leather blazer/black wash jeans date night outfit, the barn jacket with jeans and plaid shirt outfit (that was a “Debra outfit” if ever there was one!) and any of the sweaters with pants (especially the corduroys) pairings which were styled perfectly. Thanks for keeping us on our toes, Kay, and blessings to you and your family!

  8. Happy Anniversary! You look nice in all the outfits this week just as you always do. Your get away sounds like it was so nice.
Question for you, if you are not usually a petite but want to order a pair of jeans in petite because of the length will they fit you the same? I really like the Paige Sasha jeans but need a 30” inseam. The regular inseam in these is 32”. If I ordered the petite for the 30” inseam would they be ok or are other things different about the petite cut?

  9. Hi Kay,

    Greetings!

First of all, I’d like to express my admiration for the way you guide us on what to wear and how to carry ourselves with both style and comfort—it’s truly inspiring.

I’m a visual storyteller with a slim body type and wheatish skin tone, and I was hoping you could help me by suggesting the types of clothing and styles that would suit me best. If you need any additional details to tailor your advice, please feel free to let me know.

    Looking forward to your response!

    Best regards,
    Hina Maryam

    1. Hello Hina. I don’t typically offer personalized advice. I’m not a professional stylist, just a woman passing on to others what I’m learning. But I do recommend you check out my various style series that can all be found under FASHION in the header menu of my website. Thanks so much for following along.
