How I Really Dressed for My Day 05/21/21-06/06/21

June 7, 2021

Well it’s been a while! I try to post my daily outfits every Friday, but bear with me while we get back on schedule. First the move interrupted the schedule. And now I’m heading out on a little vacation to visit friends and family. So this Friday I’ll be at the lake, where there is no Internet connection and my cell service may even be sketchy. So I’m posting a couple of weeks’ worth of daily outfits today and I’ll try to get back to my Friday postings next week. But enough of my excuses! Let’s see how I really dressed for my day from May 21 through yesterday.

How I Dressed for My Day 05 21 21 06 06 21 0

Sizing Information

Just for reference, I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 155. I generally wear a size 8 or medium in dresses, tops, jackets and pants (or 29 or 30 in jeans), so that’s what I’m wearing in these looks unless I tell you otherwise. That way you can assume everything I show you is true to size unless I alert you to sizing up or down. I wear a size 9.5 shoe and, again, I’ll just let you know if I sized up or down in a shoe, otherwise it’s true to size.

How This Works

I want to focus more on styling tips and less on the products. So please assume everything I’m wearing is true to size and fits and feels great unless I tell you otherwise. After all, these are the things I’m choosing to wear in real life.

I’m providing shopping widgets after each outfit, and a lot of what I’m showing you is still available. I’m also trying to include more economical options where that’s appropriate. But if I forget to do that, just ask.

One Day Over a Week Ago

As we get closer to today, I remember more about what days I wore these outfits and why. But with seven days of hard moving, much of the past two weeks is a blur. So bear with me until I get to more recent days. I just know I was still at the rental house and probably packing and working from home when I wore these drawstring waist cropped pants and camo print tee.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 001

My drawstring waist cropped pants are so, so comfy, but they’re about sold out. But I found these similar ones at Old Navy. And this Old Navy camo print tee is a less expensive option to my camo print tee.

One Evening

I have a feeling this was one of those days I didn’t really “get dressed for my day,” but just wore something really scruffy not worth showing. And then after showering in the early evening, I put on my pajamas and decided to share those with you instead. Good choice! These are the greatest!

How I Really Dressed for My Day 002
poplin pajama shirt // slub ribbed tank // poplin pajama pants (my color no longer available) // poplin pajama shorts (not shown here) // Acorn spa thongs

Here’s how I do pajamas…almost always. I buy the shorts, pants, shirt and a tank. I wear the tank, shirt and pants in the evening while I’m watching tv or reading. Then I change into the tank and shorts to go to bed. In the morning, I slip back into the pants and add the shirt to have coffee. That’s just how I roll. And these cotton poplin pjs from Gap are the bomb! So comfy and I love this pretty muted stripe. The slub ribbed tank is very soft and comfortable, too. I have mediums in everything but it’s all very roomy, so you might could size down unless, like me, you prefer a roomy fit.

Another Day

Obviously I went somewhere this day, but I have no idea where. I don’t know if it’s age or just that these past two weeks have been so stressful and tiring, but I really do not know what I did in this outfit. Should I be concerned??? Probably not. I’m starting to fee more like myself each day. And a vacation will surely help.

We’ve continued to have some chilly weather (although I think that has come to an end), so I was layering this day. I’ve loved these open stitch sweaters for that purpose. And this clay pebble color is so versatile. It’s on sale as I type this post.

I did a little front tuck just to preserve the proportions. But the sweater is barely tucked in and then folding over to conceal the waist band. Have you seen my video, How to Stylishly Front Tuck Your Top?

I ordered and tried on and sent back so many pairs of espadrille sandals this spring. I love wearing espadrilles, but they need to be comfortable. I wanted a heel and I wanted a V or crisscross strap in the front, not a strap that went straight across my ankles. And I wanted them in a nude or soft white. I finally found these espadrille wedge sandals from Eileen Fisher and sucked it up and bought them. But since then I’m seeing lots more to choose from. I’ve included several great options in the shopping widget below.

A Warm Moving Day

Seeing this photo, I know it was a moving day. And this was one of the hot ones. The day they moved our furniture it actually cooled off significantly, but we had several hot days leading up to that one. So this skort and twist neck tee seemed like the appropriate choice.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 004
skort // twist neck tee // earrings no longer available // Teva sandals

My daughter absolutely loves Teva sandals, so I decided to give them a try this year. And I’m really enjoying these Teva midform Universal sandals. They come in a variety of other colors and patterns, too.

By the way, I did size up in the Brooklyn 16″ skort because the website suggested I do so. But I’m not sure that was necessary. It’s quite roomy on me. So if you want a loose fit, size up. But if you like it sort of trim, stay with your usual size. It’s also available in violet and navy.

Another Warm Moving Day

Obviously I was getting tired at this point in the move. I didn’t put makeup on this day. But I did manage to get dressed in something cute and breathable. I wore my Banana Republic flyweight wide leg cropped pants with a trim fit tank from Athleta.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 005
Banana Republic flyweight wide leg cropped pants // trim fit tank // white sports bra // Madewell retro trainers // no-show socks // Fitbit (my band)

I like these Banana Republic flyweight wide leg cropped pants better than similar pants I’ve owned in the past because, while they’re wide legged, they have a trimmer line. And I love this abalone color, but they also come in black and navy. These pants are lightweight, water resistant, wrinkle resistant, and breathable. And they have 4-way stretch for comfort. Oh, and they have pockets, including a hidden zip pocket. So they’re great for travel.

When I wear this trim fit Momentum tank from Athleta, I just also wear it with this white sports bra. You have to remember that I’m quite small up top, so I can get by with duos like this. And this was one of those days when no one was going to be seeing me but my husband, and we were climbing up and down stairs all day moving boxes and tubs full of our belongings from the basement of one house to the basement of another. Whew!

How I Dressed Last Saturday

Okay, I’m getting my bearings now. I know this was last Saturday because I didn’t have to move as much. We hired movers to move just the heavy furniture. So I just had to be at the house to start putting things into position while they moved us in. I wore my new S.E.A. Suit from Outerknown.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 018

I’d seen Jennifer on The Daily Connoisseur wear this jumpsuit as part of her spring capsule wardrobe. Jennifer is oh so polished and feminine and elegant. So I figured if she could wear this “garage mechanic” coverall and look darling in it, maybe I could, too! Anyhow, it’s comfortable and fun. And it was perfect for this day. I’m wearing a medium comfortably.

How I Dressed for Church Sunday

As is often the case right after moving, getting dressed for church the next day was a challenge. Ha! I basically I had to wear what I could find. James needed to do some work on the closets before we could put our clothes in them. So all of our hanging clothes were still in hanging boxes in the garage at this point. Anyhow I scrounged together my pink linen pants, a white linen tee from last year (similar) and my silk kimono.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 019
linen pants (pink is sold out) (more economical option) // linen tee from last year (similar) // silk kimono // espadrille wedge sandals // convertible multi strand necklace (not in widget) // earrings no longer available

This silk kimono is still available at more than 60% off. I think it’s a fun addition to my summer wardrobe. This silk kimono is featured in my upcoming video.

How I Dressed for Monday

This is where things start getting back to normal. In fact, you’ll notice that I really brought my game this week. Ha! After all that moving and sweating and yuck, I felt like putting on pretty clothes and makeup. I started off the week in my new Caslon stripe linen blend pants that I got in my recent Trunk Club trunk.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 008

These stripe linen blend pants are available at a great price and in a few options of colors and patterns. They run true to size for a roomy fit, and run a little long. That’s why I had to wear my platform wedge sandals with them. Fortunately these shoes are quite comfortable, so I didn’t mind. I topped my look with the Henley tee in butter cookie.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 008b

Just to add a feminine touch to this sporty look, I wore my freshwater pearl pendant from Rachelyn. I love Rachelyn Jewelry for its feminine vibe. Everything is so dainty and just lovely. And our community has a coupon code for a 10% discount. Yay! Use code KAYHARMS for 10% off your order. I recently ordered the conch necklace to pair with my freshwater pearl pendant, just as it’s shown on her website.

What I Wore Tuesday to Run Errands

Tuesday I had lots of running around to do. So I wanted to be comfortable. But I was also aching to put on something pretty. So I wore my new black knit wrap dress from Banana Republic. I mean the whole purpose of a dress like this is to be pretty while also feeling comfortable. And I absolutely love this dress.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 010
knit wrap dress // adjustable necklace // shoes and bag no longer available // Veronica hoop earrings

I had a black knit dress from Lands’ End for years. I mean I wore that thing to death. I guess that’s why I finally retired it just a couple of years ago. So I’d been looking for a very classic, versatile dress to replace it. This knit wrap dress fit the bill. It runs true to size, and unfortunately they’re selling out. I love that it has a modesty closure at the top of the neck, and the skirt wraps and stays securely as well.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 011

The knit wrap dress also comes in other colors. I decided to keep the look very pared down and neutral. So I wore my cap toe slingback pumps and carried my taupe leather tote. I find myself reaching for this Olive adjustable necklace quite often during these warmer days because it can be adjusted to fit inside most any neckline.

How I Dressed for Thursday

Thursday it was raining and I needed to go over to our rental house one last time to clean the blinds. We hired someone to clean the house, but she didn’t do blinds. ?‍♀️ So I needed to clean blinds, run a few errands and have lunch with my friends. Because it had turned cool yet again, I wore my cargo cropped chinos with this fun “good days” tee. Unfortunately it’s about sold out. But here’s a great alternative.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 012

I topped my tee with my pretty dusty pink sweatshirt. I even put it on over it at one point. But most of the day I wore it just like this or tied loosely. I wore my leopard print sandals to keep things lively and added my Tima stud earrings since I’d be doing housecleaning.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 013

I liked the way this look was comfortable and easy for the menial tasks I needed to do, but also colorful and interesting for meeting up with friends.

How I Dressed for a Day at Home Friday

Well, what goes around comes around. Because I’d been out and about for the past two days I had to buckle down and work at home all day Friday. I was prepping for a video shoot on Saturday and beginning to think about working ahead for this week. Plus I needed to do laundry and cook dinner. So there was just no time for makeup. I pulled on my favorite black linen pants (no longer in black) and a colorful tee and called it a day. Ha!

How I Really Dressed for My Day 014
black linen pants (no longer in black) // colorful tee (also in other colors, fits TTS) // leather crossover sandals // Veronica hoop earrings

I’m not sure if I would have worn my brown leather crossover sandals with my black linen pants if I’d been going out. But I was staying in, so I was just concerned about comfort. And these leather crossover sandals from Everlane are the perfect stay-at-home sandal. Yeah, you can absolutely wear them out and about. But they’re also just a nice alternative at home instead of house shoes. I’m a shoe girl, meaning I pretty much wear shoes all the time. My husband almost always goes barefoot at home, so we’re quite opposite in this. But these Everlane shoes come in handy on days like this one.

What I Wore Saturday

Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day. I needed to get things done at home and then step out for a few errands before shooting my first ever beauty video. (It’s coming, y’all! Mark your calendar for June 30th!) I decided to wear this Flyweight Jumpsuit from Banana Republic because it had been hanging in my closet just begging to be worn. Ha!

How I Really Dressed for My Day 015
Flyweight Jumpsuit // slide sandal (economical option) // adjustable necklace // gold hoop earrings

Like the flyweight cropped wide leg pants above, this Flyweight Jumpsuit is made from performance fabric that is both comfortable – light, stretchy, breathable and soft – and sustainable – made with recycled polyester from 26.1 plastic bottles. Cool, huh?

Yes, it’s a little difficult to get in and out of. If you have an overactive bladder, this jumpsuit may not suit you. But I managed just fine. And it was just plum fun to wear it. This line of clothing from Banana Republic rarely goes on sale, and I bought this jumpsuit at full price. But through today only it’s included in the 40% off (plus 20% off if you use your Gap family brand credit card and code BRCARD20) deal. This is the time to snag up any of the Conscious Luxury line at Banana Republic that you may be interested in.

Flyweight Jumpsuit // slide sandal (economical option) // adjustable necklace // gold hoop earrings // organic linen & cotton cardigan

When I went out to run errands I added this organic linen & cotton cardigan. Since I’m crushing so much on neutrals these days, I decided on this natural white (really more ecru) cardigan for my summer splurge. But any lightweight cardigan or even a denim jacket would look great over this jumpsuit.

How I Dressed for Sunday Church

And Sunday I finally got to wear my embroidered button front dress that I featured in this video on How to Wear a White Dress Like a Boss this Summer. It’s just been either too cold or messy every other Sunday. It was so fun to wear this ultra feminine dress.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 016

My dress is only available in limited sizes now, but it is permanently marked down about 40%. However, Dillard’s, where I got this dress, has so many other beautiful white dresses to choose from. Here’s their full selection of white dresses. By the way, I’m wearing an 8 in this dress.

What I’m Wearing Right Now!

And as I type up this post on Sunday afternoon I’m wearing my favorite Sunday afternoon loungewear. I’m wearing my Sunday shorts from Soma with a short sleeve v-neck raw edge sweatshirt.

How I Really Dressed for My Day 017

Oh so comfy! Oh, and I washed my pink Acorn spa thongs, so I’m wearing them again. I love that I can just throw these in the washer and dryer and they look and feel fresh and new.

Since I’m going to visit family and then join some friends at their lakehouse this week, I have made the hard decision to only post three times. I could stay up all night prepping posts for the week, but then I’d be even more exhausted than I already am from moving. And at some point the madness just has to stop.

I love showing up here every day, and I love interacting with you here. But I thank you for understanding the need to take a little time off. I’ll be posting a video on Wednesday and then another post here on Friday. I’m also going to try to post a bonus post on Saturday. I just wanted you to know what to expect. Have a great week!

Blessed for My Day

No doubt about it, our culture is changing. It seems to be getting harder and harder for believers to find our place in this world. And sometimes we’d simply rather burrow in at home and hide instead of trying to get involved in the divergent world around us.

But I believe the best way for us to make a difference in this world is not through boycotts or letters to the editor, although there’s nothing wrong with those things either, should your conscience so dictate. But the best way we can make a real difference in this world is to compassionately share the gospel. How can we do that in a world that seems antagonistic and contemptuous? We must earn the right to be heard by engaging in relationships and conversations, graciously, kindly, respectfully. Honestly, that’s challenging. But that’s why we have the Holy Spirit within, to empower us to do the hard stuff.

So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.  Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.  And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? ~ Acts 17:17-19

  1. Love all these outfits. Love your comments. You make me laugh as you are so honest and give great tips!

Mom passed this week and I needed your comments. ???Love the way you put outfits together and help us all on this mission called Life!

    1. Oh I’m so sorry Maureen. May God bless you richly with His presence and grace as you go through the coming days. Much love. ???

  2. Thank you so much! What a full post ! And you’ve had a very busy fortnight. I appreciate all the information, and admire you posting without make up. Great work x

  3. Good Moring, this is Jackie, I look forward to seeing your weekly posts, I would like to ask about crop pants, not sure if you remember me, I had asked about white pants about a month ago, just a refresher, I am 5’1” apple shape, I really love the crop pant look, I remember you mentioning crop pants need to fit just right so not to look so awkward, I am lost on this, can you refresh me? Also I cant tuck my shirts in, I have a bit of a tummy, my shirts are usually long enough to cover my tummy. I am slowly updating my wardrobe, I am in need of. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Jackie. Thanks for reading. You can wear crop pants but I suggest either creating a column of color by wearing the same color top and a lightweight cardi or linen shirt or at least wearing a top at the optimal length. I think you’d want to wear a top that maybe just covers or camouflages the tummy but not any longer. Otherwise your legs are going to look extremely and disproportionately short. So when I say they need to fit right I’m mainly just talking about length. Obviously you want them to fit your body too. But lengthwise I suggest the be ankle length, hitting at or just above the ankle bone. Finally, you’ll be best wise to wear flesh colored sandals or flats. Those will help elongate the leg visually. Hope that helps. ?

  4. My favorite is the striped linen pants with the pretty color top. I don’t wear knits because I’m busty with a small frame which makes me think God called in the B team on the day I was created but I’ve learned to just live with it.
The culture has become so crude. We’ve gone from the days when a boy wouldn’t dare curse around a girl to women cursing worse than men and the teenagers are doing things we didn’t even know about at their age. We need to pray for revival. This country needs it.

  5. So look forward to your emails. Very informative and love the styles you wear, exactly my taste in clothes as well.

  6. I would like not personally thank you for the inspiration your have been in my life. My body has become a shape I never thought it would. No name for it and I was really struggling to accept it and trying to figure out how to dress now that my stomach is huge and bulging but my weight goes down. Your thoughts, ideas, suggestions have been my answer so I thank you. I have never had this much confidence before and at a time when I am dissatisfied with my body shape. FYI I am 80 years old.

    1. Ahh, I’m so glad I’ve been able to provide some help and encouragement Marilyn. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It’s not easy getting older, that’s for sure. But we have hope! And perspective is really crucial, too. Don’t you think? And of course having a few style tools in our pocket helps! Thanks again for sharing. ?

    2. Marilyn,
If you are losing weight but your abdomen is getting larger please see your doctor. It could be a medical problem. My mother made a passing comment that was very similar when she was 80. It turned out she had ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has very non specific symptoms. It may present with bloating, constipation, clothes feeling tight in the abdomen and feeling full easy.
I am a doctor and regret I didn’t push more to have my mother get checked out when she had some of these symptoms. You almost have to ask to be checked out for it. Many doctors don’t think about gyn problems when patients prevent with gastrointestinal symptoms. Pelvic exams won’t pick it up. Typically a special ultrasound and a blood test is done.

This is not to alarm you. Your comment just registered with me. I try to educate women about ovarian cancer when I can.

  7. Thank you for all the work and effort that you put into each post. I really hope that you enjoy the week with your family. Please give yourself some of the grace that you give others. Don’t worry about missing a few posts. Just rest and recover!

  8. Thank you for another great post! Prayers for a safe trip and a relaxing vacation with family and friends!

  9. Hi Kay, it must be very hard to feel you can have a couple of weeks off, like in any other job, but you must need that sometimes, especially after the exhaustion of a move! Give yourself permission to have a fortnight off sometime to totally relax- your subscribers will still be here when you get back. Enjoy your break!

  10. I laughed when I read your description of how you change your pajamas between wake and sleep times. This is because I pretty much do the same thing. Love this weekly post. It is authentic and refreshing.

    1. Hahaha! I get hot at night with long pants but cold if I’m up and about in the evening or morning with the short pants and tank. ? Is that you, too?

  11. Love the what I wore posts. I so appreciate hearing how you chose your daily outfits. I think that’s my hardest step. I am trying to get dressed for my day. But these past seven days have been an exception. We are in process of prepping our house to put it on the market. So I am cleaning and painting. Currently I am wearing relax clothes. My husband just fell off a ladder yesterday. Praise the Lord for helpful neighbors who heard him! He only has a sprain. He is back to work but hobbling. Anyways I am distracted with all those things. But want to remember to get back to getting dressed for my day soon!
I want to wish you a good visit. May it refresh your soul!

    1. Oh my. Bless your heart. I totally get it. Yes, give yourself a little “wardrobe grace.” I’m so sorry about your husband’s accident. That must have been scary. Take care! ?

  12. Please, Kay, take some much needed time off and enjoy your vacation. We will be here when you get back. That you can count on! Loved all the outfits in this post.
I especially enjoy each BFMD as you relate what the Bible teaches with everyday life.

  13. Kay, Thank you for your thorough, informative posts. I have a question that maybe you could answer in the future sometime. I have almost identical hair as yours but I’m a brunette. I love to wear it straight as you do, but occasionally I mix things up and embrace the curl. Do you use a specific product and/or process when you go curly? Currently, I am using a product from Moroccanoil called Curl. Apply when wet, let dry or diffuse. Always trying to control the frizz. I know you are on vacation so please don’t rush in answering this. Thank you.

    1. Hi Christine. No problem. Just sitting in the car all day! I was intent on going all curl or wave for a while last summer but in the end decided it was actually more time consuming for me because I had to work on my hair so much between washes. But recently I’ve been letting it just dry instead of styling it occasionally simply because I’ve been tired. And I liked the way it turned out some days and not other days. And when I applied any product at all it actually did worse. I do try to use a moisturizing shampoo when I’m going to let it go wavy/curly because I know that dry hair is the demise of curls. But otherwise I don’t really have any recommendations. Sometimes I use a diffuser to hurry it along and other times I don’t. I think I’ve decided to only go wavy on rare occasions.

      1. Kay, I’ve come to the same conclusion…that is why I asked. I seem to spend too much time just trying to be natural. Then the product seemed to weigh it down as the day progresses. Thanks for your quick response. Enjoy your much deserved vacay. Friends, family, and the lake. Doesn’t get any better than that. The Lord bless you.

  14. Kay, I like so many of the outfits you put together, even on the no makeup and moving days. You are doing a great job styling your hair, and as much as I liked your hair long, I think the shorter length is even better. I hope that you and James had a safe drive to GA, and that the rain really will ease off after today (Tuesday), so that you can have some outdoor time.I’m glad that you are taking a few days off from the blog to really unwind and be present. Safe travels back to OH at the end of the week!

  15. Thank you so much for taking the time to post all these outfits when you must be so busy and stressed with moving! I love all your outfits, you manage to look so polished every day.

  16. Kay, thank you for helping me learn to dress. I found the striped linen pants and yellow shirt outfit very appealing. I wondered why. Is it that the style flattered your shape, or had you lost weight from moving and this photo played that up? I am trying to understand the elements that can make one outfit stand out above the rest. Or possibly it is just that the style speaks to me. Am I seeing something different in this picture? Lol! I know you’re busy, so don’t worry if you can’t help me on this! I’m learning so much already!

    1. Hi Jana. I think the reason that outfit looks so slenderizing is because those pants are very long. I’m 5’8” and they’re long on me. So I’m wearing heels. That combination of long pants and heels is always slenderizing. ?

@dressed_4_my_day
