How I Dressed for Cold Weather Recently

We’re getting cold and snowy quite early this year in Ohio, and it’s not even officially winter yet. I don’t mind the cold or the snow, but I’ll almost certainly be tired of winter well before it’s over. For now I’m enjoying putting together cozy, warm and stylish winter outfits, both for home and out and about. Let’s see how I dressed for cold weather recently.

How to Shop Here: To shop the items I feature, just click on the words in the captions of photos, the highlighted words in my text or the images in the shopping widgets I sometimes include. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links. Items that have been gifted to me by the associated brand are indicated with “c/o”.

I like to focus on why I wore what I wore and how I put my looks together in these weekly posts. So I may not call out each item shown. You’ll find links to anything that is available in the captions under the photos. I’ll also share fit information there IF the garment doesn’t fit true to size (TTS). I try to be transparent about gifting; gifted items are indicated with a C/O beside them, meaning they were given to me “courtesy of” that brand. Finally, I’m 5’8″ and about 160 pounds, so I normally wear a misses 10. I have even proportions and an hourglass shape.

What I Wore Last Friday

Last Friday I got out to run a few errands, but otherwise I was at home working from my office. We keep our home quite chilly, however, so I still dressed warm. With snow on the ground it felt like a good day to go grey. These castlerock grey cords are an ankle length (28″ in the regular length, but they come in petite sizes, too), but they worked nicely with my new waterproof Chelsea boots from Blondo.

So yeah, I really started that outfit with my boots, then chose the corduroy pants and moved from there to the sweater. With a light grey sweater, darker grey pants and black boots, I decided to add a splash of color near my face with that red mockneck.

Sunday’s Outfit

Saturday we shot videos, so I don’t have an outfit photo for that day. I was just in and out of clothes most of the day. And I probably switched into this loungewear when I started editing the footage. But let’s move on to what I wore Sunday to church and out to lunch.

Actually you may have seen this outfit in my blog post, 5 Keys to Creating Monochromatic Outfits this Winter. In fact, that post was born out of my struggle to create that outfit. When I ordered the Fair Isle sweater I neglected to note the color: light camel. I had it in my head that it was ivory, so I ordered these corduroy pants (not shown) in pale bone. But when the pants arrived I realized they have a warm, yellowish tint, whereas this light camel sweater is more cool to neutral in tone. Fortunately I already had the Varley wide leg pants in my closet and they are a similar cool camel. If you want more insight into how I put this outfit together, definitely head to that blog post.

How I Dressed for My Day Monday

Monday was, well, Monday. I was dragging a little so I forced myself to get dressed head to toe. I just accomplish more and feel better at the end of the day if I get dressed for my day. I put together another black and grey combination, this time accenting with an ivory turtleneck.

cotton turtleneck // Fair Isle cardigan (almost sold out; available in only a couple of sizes) similar sweater // jeans // booties

These slim-wide jeans are a favorite because of their 11.5″ rise and 27″ inseam. So I can wear them nicely with sneakers and flats, but they work well with a slim shaft bootie, too.

What I Wore Out and About Tuesday

Tuesday I had a couple of appointments out and about and needed to do a few things at the mall, too. So I treated myself to lunch and made it a day. I’d worn jeans a lot, so I opted this time for my wide leg cargo pants that I’d purchased last year from Veronica Beard. As long as this silhouette feels current I’ll be wearing these super chic pants. The high waist and knit fabric makes them super slenderizing and they always draw compliments.

I wanted to try on this stunning coat (which I ended up buying for myself with a boatload of Nordy notes that were about to expire), so I intentionally kept my base outfit simple and neutral. Since I was going to be trying on a raspberry coat, I decided it would work nicely to wear my red double faced wool coat with this grey and black duo. Mine is from a couple of years ago, but it’s very similar to this one from Talbots, which I’ve passed on to a friend.

Oh, and I did treat myself to my first ever high end designer bag. It’s undoubtedly my last, too. LOL! This was no rash purchase. I’ve been eyeing the Gucci Horsebit 1955 medium shoulder bag for a couple of years now, watching it appreciate in price each year. So I finally pulled the trigger and I’m quite happy with it. I think it looked smart with this outfit.

How I Dressed Wednesday

Wednesday I worked from home all day, but I did have teleconference appointments, so I wanted to look nice for those. I chose to wear my brown toned Fair Isle sweater and light medium wash jeans for a soft look. On the website they show this sweater with a red turtleneck underneath, and I would have loved to have worn it that way. But mine was in the laundry, so I opted for the ivory lettuce trim turtleneck top instead.

I’m telling you, it’s been C O L D here, so layering has become the norm. If you don’t see me with a turtleneck, mockneck or tee underneath my sweater, I’m probably wearing a camisole.

How I Dressed for an Appointment Thursday

Thursday I had my annual physical, so I also visited a new Dorothy Lane market that is near my healthcare provider’s office. I actually love walking around grocery stores just checking out things, and this one is delightfully interesting.

Anyhow I decided I’d worn enough black this week, so I chose to wear a pretty warm pink cashmere sweater. The color is called maple, but it’s really a medium, rosy hue. I started this outfit with the sweater and then chose the medium washed jeans to keep the contrast in intensity minimal. Next I chose to wear my camel boots and carry the slightly brighter camel purse. The camel boiled wool car coat seemed like a good choice to round out the look. And later I actually wore these gloves (in brown) and this oatmeal cashmere beanie to protect against the cold and snow.

Thanks so much for dropping in. I hope this post about how I dressed for cold weather supplied you with a little winter style inspiration. Share with me in the comments about a favorite outfit you wore this week. I’d love to hear from you today. Have a great weekend!

Blessed for My Day

Why is it necessary to repent of our sins by confessing them to the Lord? Have you ever wondered that? Over the years I have learned that the power of sin is often in the secrecy of it. Other times the stronghold is found in our own denial. Either way, speaking aloud or writing out our prayer of confession can break the bondage of that sin. When we confess with our lips (or our pen) that we have been doing or did something that defied God, we break the power it has in our lives.

Sometimes we avoid speaking aloud of our sin because we don’t want to admit our guilt. Other times it just feels ugly and distasteful to wrap words around our wrongs. But we needn’t fear. These assumptions are really lies of the enemy, who would like to keep us in bondage to our sin. The truth is that confession and repentance bring “seasons of refreshing.” (Acts 3:19) Jesus lived and died to give you freedom from the penalty of your sin, but also to free you from the power of sin. You can step into that freedom by confessing your sin to Him and turning away from it with His power.

Take words with you and return to the Lord. Say to Him, “Take away all guilt And receive us graciously, So that we may present the fruit of our lips. ~ Hosea 14:2

  1. Lovely outfits! The Fair Isle sweaters really flatter you. I especially love the monochromatic look- so elegant.

Outerwear has been my splurge this year after wearing the same puffer for years, but I have to stop. That Max Mara coat is absolutely gorgeous- good thing for my budget it doesn’t come in my size, since I have no Nordy Notes! Is the camel boiled wool coat in the last pic the J. Crew Daphne?? I scored one on eBay over the summer for less than $100, and I love it.

    1. Yes, that coat is actually the Daphne, purchased last year. It’s very similar to the one I linked to. But does have a collar whereas the other does not. It’s a great coat, isn’t it? Good for you!

  2. The black boots are beautiful, but the ones that show up via link are not the same style. That company’s products are so elegant and well-made. Enjoy our Ohio winter weather! It definitely has surprised us with such an early start this year.

    1. You know what? You’re right! Those are my Blondo waterproof booties. They’re great, too. I do have the Sarah Flint booties and they are lovely. But it looks like I opted for the Blondos that day. That’s for pointing that out. I’ve fixed it now.
