I get questions almost daily about my hair. What products do I use? How do I style it? Do I color it? and more! So today I’m sharing the details about how I style my latest haircut. And I’m telling you about all the hair styling products recommended by my hairdresser. The best news? I found them all at Kohl’s!

My hair is cut in a layered medium-length bob with texture and lots of movement. And for the summer I asked my hairdresser to do whatever it took to create a “do” that I could just wash and go. My hair frizzes and loses all style terribly in the humidity, and I was tired of straightening it with a flat iron only to have it frizz out the moment I opened the door. So she thinned it out even more so that I could get more lift and body with my wash-and-go style.

But I also wanted all the products I would need to create this look. So I asked for her recommendations. She used the Bumble and bumble haircare and styling products on my hair that day, and she showed me how to use them. I was thrilled when I was able to get everything she demonstrated at Sephora at Kohl’s. That way I can easily order the things I need through the Kohl’s website and then pick them up at my local Kohl’s.

I also appreciate that the day I ordered these products I was also able to order other items, including this v-neck tee and these sandals. And of course I also get double the earnings and double the perks when I shop Sephora at Kohl’s. I earn Kohl’s rewards and Sephora Beauty Insider points on each Sephora at Kohl’s purchase.

Bumble and bumble shampoo and conditioner

Because I’m trying to make the most of my natural waves but not have frizz, my hairdresser suggested I use Bb. Curl moisturizing shampoo and 3-in-1 conditioner. I can already tell a huge difference in the texture of my hair after using all of these products for just under a month. Sometimes women assume that if their hair frizzes it is over-moisturized. But that’s just not true. Frizz means your hair is “reaching out for” the moisture in the air. So if you keep your hair moisturized with good products it will “behave” better.

By the way, no I don’t color my hair at all anymore. I had a few highlights well over a year ago. But when I mentioned getting more just recently, my hairdresser talked me out of it, assuring me my hair has plenty of light and variation and brightness. So I’m quite happy with letting it go grey. I guess it is grey, not just going. Ha! And the Bumble and bumble moisturizing shampoo and 3-in-1 conditioner seem to be working very well with my hair texture and color.

Invisible Oil Primer

Even though I’m not using much heat on my hair these days, my hairdressers suggested I use the Bb. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil primer on my hair after washing and gently towel drying. She says it’s just a good leave-in primer that helps keep moisture in and harmful UV rays out. So I use this spray before any kind of styling I do on my wet hair, and I can also reapply on second or third days if I’d like. It’s very lightweight. I spray in about 6 sprays and then work it into my hair with my fingers. My stylist says most women forget this step and that it’s very important to take the time to gently manipulate the product into your hair.

At this point I have two options. If I am using the hairdryer followed by the straight iron to style my hair, I use the Bumble and bumble straight blow dry cream. I gently massage a dollop of cream about the size of a dime into my hair, starting at the ends and working toward the roots. That straight blow dry cream gives me a silky blowout and helps to fight the frizz.

Blow Dry Cream

But this summer I’m really not doing much of that. Instead I’m using the diffuser on my hair dryer to dry my hair just a bit, setting in the little bit of curl or wave that I have, and leaving it at that. So my stylist recommended the Bb. Don’t Blow It thick (h)air styler cream. This cream is formulated for thick hair, but if you have thin hair you’ll get good results from the Bb. Don’t Blow It Fine (h)air styler cream. Again, just a dime-sized dollop evenly worked into your damp hair from ends toward roots will work.

Don't blow it

As the name implies the Bb. Don’t Blow It thick (h)air styler cream and the Bb. Don’t Blow It Fine (h)air styler cream are formulated to work without heat. The benefit of the products is that your hair can dry naturally without getting that crunchy texture that mine generally gets without heat styling. Can anyone relate? And it seals in the moisture, reducing frizz and giving your hair that polished look without the fuss.

That said, I do like to use my hair dryer just to get the process started. I generally don’t have time to just let my hair air dry completely. I set my Dyson Supersonic hair dryer on the lowest heat setting and use the diffuser, so it’s basically like airdrying but sped up a little. And I still get the great results from the thick (h)air styler cream.

drying my bangs

Because I have a cowlick in the front of my hair, I do also dry my bangs, styling them with a round brush (similar). But I still keep the heat very low and use the diffuser.

Using the diffuser

To use the diffuser, keep the hair dryer turned off while you place it where you want it. Then turn it on low and allow the diffused airstream to gently dry your hair, keeping the appliance still. Turn the diffuser off and then move it away from your head and onto the next section. In other words, you’re not trying to “blow” your hair. You want the curls or waves to dry on their own. You’re just helping the process along a little. Make sense?

adding texture

After my hair is dry – whether I’ve gotten it all dry with the diffuser or it has air-dried completely – I add a little texture with the Bumble and bumble sumotech flexible lo-shine cream solid. I get just a little bit on my fingers, rub them together and then work into a little bit of my hair. This takes a little practice, but I think I’m getting better at it. You don’t really want too much of this on or it will weigh your hair down. But if you don’t put enough on it does nothing. The goal is to achieve a sort of piece-y effect. A little can look modern and fresh; too much ends up looking a little dated.

Oil
Bumble and bumble hairdresser’s invisible oil

I’ve been using a light dusting of oil on my hair for years, but I especially like the lightweight formulation of the 6-oil blend in the Bumble and bumble hairdresser’s invisible oil. You only need one pump of the oil per application. Rub it into your palms and fingers and then work it into your hair with a very light touch. Really I just sort of brush over and under my hair with it, oh so lightly. The oil also helps keep away frizz, adds a little shine to your hair, keeps it more manageable looking and provides some UV protection.

Sometimes I stop right here. But if I’m going out or doing a photo or video shoot, I sometimes spray on a little hairspray. I’ve been using the Bumble and bumble spray de mode flexible hold hairspray and I really like the results. Since I want a very natural look I don’t need a firm hold. But this Bb. product seems to provide just enough hold to help my waves stay fresh throughout the day.

I don’t ever spray from the top of my head because I don’t want to flatten my hair. Instead, I spray from underneath to give my hair more fullness and bounce.

By the way, I also picked up another Bumble and bumble air dry product from Sephora at Kohl’s recently, the Bb. seaweed air dry cream, shown below. I haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds like it will be similar to what I’m already using…just another option.

Blessed for My Day

Have you ever heard someone say something like, “It was a very hard season of life. But God was with me and I felt His presence?” Sure you have. I used to hear things like that and think to myself that “God with me” was some sort of a consolation prize we got when bad things happened. Like, you lose…but hey, you get “God with me” as a consolation.

But once I had gone through a few of life’s hard seasons I learned that nothing could be further from the truth. “God with me” is not a consolation prize you get when you really lose. Indeed, God’s presence is the richest blessing we can enjoy. His presence brings courage and strength. He walks with us through the valleys and celebrates with us on the mountaintops. God holds us up when we are weak and He helps us through the details of the hard things. It turns out “God with me” is not a consolation prize; it’s the treasure.

Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ ~ Isaiah 41:10

xoxo, Kay

  1. Great ideas from you plus Kohl’s! The store is everywhere and these products are familiar to most of us out here in North America! It’s always delightful as well as educating to read your post every day. Gives me a few minutes to sit down and relax while I enjoy it and think about myself too!

  2. Great post! I live in CA but I’m on the east coast this week visiting family. The humidity is off the charts! Thanks for all the product links – I’m experimenting with letting my hair dry naturally when I’m in higher humidity. It’s a bit dryer where we live so my hair just falls flat! Appreciate all your tips!

  3. Your new haircut looks great! Nice and fresh. It reminds me that I am in desperate need of a haircut! I think my last one was last fall or late summer! Thanks for the tips. I forget about oil helping frizz-I have some and forget to use it. I don’t need it in the winter as much.

BFMD-I agree! The presence of God and His subtle messages to us are much stronger in the trials of this life. He is Good.

  4. That was so very helpful as I have hair similar to yours and don’t always know the right products to use. Thank you!

  5. The most important words I’ve read today…I never spray my hair from the top so as not to flatten my hair. Genius! I rarely spray but when I do it’s from the top. Not any longer. Thanks Kay.

  6. Hi Kay I absolutely loved your BFMD , how very true 🙏🏻 It helped me remember when a few years ago I was having such a difficult time after I had nursed my dad and he had died . I spent so much time railing against God and being so so angry for leaving us . But without me realising he was carrying me and guiding all the right people into my life to help heal me . So I make sure every day and every night I give my Gratitude to God , and Im trying my very best to live by God’s way ❤️.

Thank you Kay for your hair advice today , your and the products you use and how . hair looks gorgeous and your colour is absolutely beautiful and like you say its natural . There are women out there going to Salons to have that colour done and you have been blessed with it naturally ❤️.

  7. I’m going to try these products. I have fine curly hair that frizzes. I want to take a break from blow-drying during the summer. I have been trying to find a good product. Thank you Kay.

    Love Blessed for my Day.
