One of my favorite style formulas is to create a column of color underneath a contrasting third piece. When we think of this magically slenderizing combination, we often think of wearing black under a pretty print or color. But you can actually use any color to create a continuous column. Today I’m using the fabric many of us live in to create a column of color with denim on denim.

Despite the fact that so many new synthetic fabrics have made our lives even more comfortable and cozy, denim continues to be the fabric we live in. In fact, denim on denim on denim is one of the hottest trends of 2024. So pile it on! Denim skirts and dresses have risen in popularity and jean jackets continue to be a wardrobe staple. But today I’m using the must-have denim or chambray shirt along with a new favorite jean to create my column.

At one time there were well defined rules for wearing denim with denim. But in 2024, the rules have been tossed out the window. That said, if you want to create that slenderizing column with a denim shirt and jeans, I do suggest choosing pieces in as close to the same wash as possible. But don’t overthink it.

In this outfit I’m wearing pieces from Frank & Eileen, a favorite brand for truly comfortable and casual clothes that are also stylish and unique. But you can create this trending outfit formula with similar pieces from your fall wardrobe. I’ve topped the Galway gaucho jean in their 1972 wash with the Eileen relaxed button-up shirt in vintage stonewashed denim. The shirt fits true to size; I wear a medium.

The Galway gaucho jeans fit true to size according to their size charts; I’m wearing my usual 30. They feature a mid-high rise (10″ in the front), a 26″ inseam and a 23″ leg opening. The denim is a butter soft, Italian denim that feels light and extremely comfortable. It holds its shape beautifully for all day wear.

Creating a denim on denim column is definitely a style statement on its own. But don’t forget to add a few stylish touches. For a comfortable, relaxed and on trend look like this, I think it’s fun to use a half tuck to define the waist while still signaling that this is a purposefully casual outfit. I also popped the collar of my shirt, rolled up the sleeves and added a belt. Any time you add a little hardware to an outfit you add a little polish.

Frank & Eileen is known for their comfortable, unique triple fleece fabric. They have tops, pants and jackets in this cozy fabric that are perfect for a casual lifestyle. I especially love them for travel. Here I’ve topped my denim on denim combination with a triple fleece Mini Belfast jacket in crimson. Unfortunately this color is sold out, but you could create a similar look with the Mini Belfast in rosemary or evergreen. And of course you can use any other contrasting color jacket or cardigan here, too. But remember, the more stylish and on trend the topper, the more contemporary you’ll look.

I finished my denim on denim outfit with cognac accessories. None of my three leather accessories are available, but I’ve linked to similar items in the shopping widget below. To complete the look I added simple gold jewelry from Ana Luisa. I love my Ana Luisa jewelry for everyday style.
So that’s a wrap! I love creating a column of color with a denim on denim outfit. Let me know if you have any questions. Do you like to wear denim on denim?

When I lose my temper…I lose. In the moment it may feel like an act of force – a display of power – to express anger through harsh words, a raised voice or even demonstrative physical expression. Yelling or throwing things may feel powerful, assertive. But in fact, when I show such anger with my words, voice and body, I’m only demonstrating how little control I have over my spirit, my inner woman.
On the other hand, when I manage to keep my emotions in check and walk away from the situation without exploding, I’ve indicated that I have my emotions under control. This is true power. Do you struggle with an explosive anger? Or has something pulled at your last nerve to the point that you feel like you might “lose it?” Ask the Lord to help you rule over your spirit today with His peace. Remember that you can always take your emotions to Him, even the most raw and ugly of them. Jesus is our safe place to run when we feel ourselves coming undone.
One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty,
And one who rules his spirit, than one who captures a city. ~ Proverbs 16:32

I look forward to wearing denim on denim this fall. On Monday, our temps change. I almost bought a light wash and dark wash denim shirt each, but then went to my favorite secondhand shops and found one of each!!
That’s great!
Kay what a wonderful outfit! Love that red jacket! Hate it is sold out but maybe I can find something similar. By the way, I really enjoyed your last video on our one mistake we are making. My mother always made us make our bed as soon as we stepped out of it growing up. She always put on her work cloths, make-up and all everyday before work. I am from a large family and she would make us all breakfast before she headed off to work as well. I have done these things my whole life with such a wonderful role model. I soo wish she was here with us still so I could tell her how much I appreciated all she did for us and herself. 🥰. Thank for such a lovely reminder. I didn’t see it then but do now as you talk about it. I am not the best dresser but with your help I am getting better! Thank you Kay for all you do for us gals out here! 😘
Love this look. I’ve never worn demin on denim but love this look with the pop of red. I’m going to look for a similar red jacket. Thanks for the idea.
I had to chuckle as I am wearing a denim on denim outfit today!
Denim on denim (Canadian tuxedo) is not a look I would wear, but I have seen people (like you) pull it off very stylishly. I do like wearing a good pair of jeans, and I will toss on my jean jacket on a cooler day, but never together. 🙂 Your BFMD is spot on!!!
I absolutely love this look! Especially the red jacket on the denim in denim! You look great! Elevated yet casual and fun!
