While I’m a consistent advocate for getting dressed for your day – putting in a little effort and tying together a cohesive outfit that makes you looks smart and feel confident – I’m an even bigger proponent of another daily habit: practicing good skincare. Several years down the road we may not even remember the days we neglected to get out of our pajamas or workout clothes. But we will see the visible and lasting evidence of the days and nights we failed to properly cleanse our skin and apply moisturizer and/or sunscreen. Skincare really matters. So today I’m sharing a simple, effective skincare plan for women over 50 that I’ve used myself and highly recommend. This post is NOT sponsored, but I simply believe in these products enough to share.

Why I Recommend the Doctor Rogers Simple, Effective Skincare Plan

On the regular I use some fairly pricey skincare products. I absolutely love applying my Prestige La Crème Texture Riche moisturizer from Dior. It goes on silky and light, leaving my skin feeling pampered and thoroughly hydrated and moist. My makeup applies beautifully over it, too. But this product is also prohibitively expensive. I’m not even sure how much longer I’ll continue to invest in it…especially after I retire (one of these days – not soon).

So when women ask me about my skincare and what I recommend, I hesitate to recommend this moisturizer and the Prestige La Micro-Lotion de Rose Advanced Formula serum I use beforehand. Yes, I stand by their effectiveness and I do recommend them. But I also wanted to thoroughly familiarize myself with a simple, effective and more economical set of products that I could wholeheartedly recommend without reservation. So I set out, independently of any sponsorships, to find said products.

After experimenting with probably a dozen different skincare brands, I’ve landed solidly on one that I am extremely excited to share with you. Not only do I enjoy using the simple, effective skincare products from Doctor Rogers, but I am thrilled with the results. Even more importantly perhaps, I appreciate Dr. Heather D. Rogers’ skincare philosophy and approach.

Doctor Rogers Skincare

Skincare SIMPLIFIED. RESULTS perfected. Doctor Rogers Skin Care, was founded and developed by Dr. Heather D. Rogers, MD – a double board-certified, nationally recognized dermatologist who guides patients to their best skin every day. For her namesake line, she offers a simplified, science-backed approach to achieving healthy, beautiful skin – without compromising safety or efficacy.

Dr. Rogers seems to loathe overcomplicated, overhyped skincare as much as I do. Her expert opinion is that beautiful skin doesn’t come from using more products—it comes from using the right ones. Each product in her small, curated line is multi-award-winning, hypoallergenic, nontoxic, plant-derived and biodegradable—setting the gold standard for safe, effective skincare. Dr. Rogers’ products all…

  • prioritize ingredients that work in harmony with skin’s biology to support barrier function, repair, and long-term skin health. They utilize bioactive ingredients.
  • are formulated with scientifically studied ingredients at levels shown to be effective and well tolerated—never included simply to support marketing claims. They include effectively dosed actives.
  • avoid ingredients known to increase the risk of irritation or sensitization, even when they are widely used or aesthetically appealing. The products are free of common allergens, including fragrance, essential oils, propylene glycol, lanolin, sulfates, and more. They contain no common irritants.
  • contain no hormone disruptors, carcinogens or otherwise questionable ingredients. When credible scientific evidence raises concerns around hormone disruption, toxicity, or long-term safety, they err on the side of caution.
  • prioritize ingredients that biodegrade rather than accumulate in our bodies or planet.

A Simple, Effective Daytime Skincare Plan for Women Over 50

Because Dr. Rogers believe skincare should be enjoyable, simple and effective, her daytime plan includes just three of her products and a fourth recommendation. She recommends a simplified daytime regimen of a gentle cleanser, a day preventive treatment, a replenishing face cream and your favorite sunscreen.

face wash // sunscreen // face cream // preventive treatment

The Doctor Roger face wash is a gentle, gel-based cleanser that removes the day’s buildup without any harsh sulfates or surfactants that strip skin of essential moisture – leaving skin clean, soft, hydrated and ready for skincare. Using a dime size amount, work the cleanser into a rich lather and massage over damp skin for 20-30 seconds. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel. This face wash is suitable for all skin types and sensitive skin, too.

face wash

The Doctor Rogers day preventive treatment is the ultimate defender against daily free-radicals, powered by advanced antioxidants that help prevent, correct and reverse the visible damage caused by UV, pollution, blue light and stress. I’m showing it in the travel size here, but it comes in a larger 1 fluid ounce refillable size that I would recommend for daily use. In the mornings, after cleansing and rinsing your face and patting dry, apply 1-2 pumps (1 works well for me) to the face, neck, chest and back of hands. With regular use you can expect reduced redness and inflammation, improved tone and brightness, enhanced collagen production and visibly fewer fine lines and wrinkles.

day preventive treatment

For the next step in this simple, effective skincare plan for daytime, you have two options. The face lotion (not shown here), a lightweight daily hydration calms irritation and maintains a healthy barrier. Dr. Rogers believes face lotions and creams should simply nourish and calm the skin, not tax it. Powered by bioactive ingredients including hydrating Squalene, dullness-fighting Niacinamide and soothing Jojoba Esters, the face lotion is a fragrance-free formula that helps build a stronger barrier for acne- and rosacea-prone skin and is ideal for combination and normal-to-oily skin types.

face cream

But I’ve been using the Doctor Rogers face cream shown above for normal to dry skin. “This rich, deeply-hydrating face cream restores healthy radiance to dry or mature skin, leaving it instantly feeling more plumped, firm and replenished. Dermatologist-formulated with advanced, clean, bioactive ingredients like hydrating Squalane, calming Shea Butter, barrier building Centella Asiatica and brightening Niacinamide, this multi-tasking moisturizer reverses dullness, reduces inflammation, diminishes fine lines and improves tone. This thick, silky cream can be applied liberally to the face, neck, chest and eyes after the treatment serum. In fact, even if I use a different face cream, I’m continuing to use the Doctor Rogers face cream on the skin around my eyes because it’s just that good. I’ve suffered from dry skin around the eyes for months, but no more.

sunscreen

After the face cream has had time to absorb into the skin a little, you’ll want to apply your favorite sunscreen. I stand by the effectiveness of the sunscreen from another doctor, the Dr. Brandt Liquid Sunshield. It’s a lightweight, 100% mineral sunscreen with broad – spectrum UVA/UVB SPF50, HEV/Blue Light, infrared and pollution protection. I feel like I get good coverage with this silky cream, but I also appreciate that it absorbs quickly and my makeup goes on beautifully over this product.

Night

face wash // face cream // face oil // night repair treatment

I appreciate that Dr. Rogers truly keeps her skincare regimen simple. It changes only minimally for nighttime. And I do add one additional product that I highly recommend.

face wash

Again, you’ll want to use the Doctor Rogers face wash to clean off makeup and the grime of the day without stripping your skin of necessary oils. It’s gentle and soothing.

night repair treatment

The only real change in the evening plan is that you next apply a night repair treatment instead of the day preventive treatment. “This dermatologist-developed formula features science-backed bioactive antioxidants, Glycolic Acid, Bakuchiol and Gluconolactone in a creamy, skin supportive base, to assist cell turnover without the irritation commonly associated with retinoids like retinol or tretinoin. So if you’ve had a sensitivity to those harsher products in the past, you might want to give this repair treatment a try, incorporating it into your routine every other night if you’d prefer.

face cream

Again, you’ll work either the face lotion or face cream into your skin after the night repair treatment has time to absorb into your skin a bit. Your face will fee nourished, not stripped or parched.

face oil

Finally, I still light to end my nighttime routine with a good face oil. I enjoy using the Colleen Rothschild Face Oil No. 9. One pump of this silky, light oil locks in the benefits of the night repair treatment and the face cream so that they can do what you’ve paid for them to do on a deeper, cellular level without dissipating while you sleep.

So that’s the simple, effective skincare plan for women over 50 that I highly recommend. The Doctor Rogers products have worked beautifully for me. I can tell they are high grade ingredients and I love the way they make my skin feel, both day and night. The prices are reasonable and several come in containers for which you can buy refills. They also have subscription options for additional savings.

restore healing balm

I did want to mention one more product from Doctor Rogers. When I had my Mohs surgery several years ago, my dermatologist recommended that I use a glycerin based product to prevent scarring and aid in healing. Doctor Rogers has a restore healing balm just for that purpose. But unlike mass-market healing ointments that simply coat the skin with petroleum and are often mixed with unhelpful allergens, this dermatologist-formulated healing balm contains three well-tolerated bioactive and biodegradable ingredient superstars proven to speed recovery. I applied it to a burn on my finger recently and the blister was completely healed the next morning. Use this balm for…

  • Post-procedure laser or stitches, even around the sensitive eye area
  • First aid cuts and scrapes
  • Dry, chapped lips, hands or skin
  • Skin sensitization, irritation, rosacea and eczema flares
  • Overnight slugging companion to lock in moisture
  • Tattoo after-care that preserves ink dimension
  • Postpartum and breastfeeding recovery

Blessed for My Day

Taking care of our skin may seem like a frivolous concern, vain even. But remember that your skin is in fact the largest organ in your body. It not only looks better when it is properly nourished and cared for, but it will be healthier for it. In fact, the health of your entire body is tied to the way you care for your skin. It is wise to consider carefully what you apply to your skin and to invest in products that are helpful, not harmful.

If you feel like your life is compartmentalized into things that are practical, essential, spiritual, physical and recreational, but that they don’t overlap, think again. God wants to be involved in every area of our lives. He can provide us with wisdom, discernment, knowledge and a sense of direction, peace and calm as we manage both the practical and the more aesthetic parts of our lives. Invite Him in to your processes for caring for your body in the same way you pray to Him about more “spiritual” concerns.

Now when the turn came for each young woman to go in to King Ahasuerus, after the end of her twelve months under the regulations for the women—for the days of their beauty treatment were completed as follows: six months with oil of myrrh and six months with balsam oil and the cosmetics for women— the young woman would go in to the king in this way: anything that she desired was given her to take with her from the harem to the king’s palace. ~ Esther 2:12-13

  1. This sounds good. I’ve used Dimebeauty for years now and like it. It’s CLEAN and I love how you can click and read on every ingredient in the products to read what it is. It’s a simple routine for day and night and affordable and they have many sales and also rewards build up for points for mobey off. Thanks for sharing. I like to hear of other CLEAN products. Do any of these have a strong scent? I can’t do scents. Triggers my migraines. Thanks.

  2. Thank you for this helpful post. I have been searching for the best skin care products for my aging skin (I am 77 years old), and have not been satisfied with what I have tried. Some of the products have been quite expensive which prohibits me from reordering when I run out. On a leap of faith in you and these products I am ordering some and am excited to try them out. You always succeed in giving good advice and tips, and your skin looks wonderful.

    1. Wonderful. I really think you’ll like these, Doris Ann. They’re very simple, but quite effective. And they feel clean and hydrating. Please let me know how they work for you in a few weeks.
