The Key to Wearing No Tuck Summer Outfits

These days the trend is to look polished and pulled together, but also relaxed and no-fuss. That means no tuck outfits are more on trend than ever…but not the way we wore them 10 years ago.

Stay away from those skinny pants or leggings topped with tunics. No matter how you dice it, those outfits just look very dated and out of style. Instead, even when you’re building a no tuck summer outfit, you want to reach for on trend straight or wide leg pants and flattering tops with interesting details.

And of course you also want to do the math, so to speak, so that your outfit looks balanced and the proportions are pleasing to the eye. What proportions would those be? In art and design we learn that the eye loves to see images or pictures where 2/3 of the area is filled with one object or “scene” while the remaining 1/3 is something different. To achieve those pleasing proportions in fashion, we generally, but not always, like to define where our waist is so that the top 1/3 of our outfit is at the top of our body and the other 2/3 is clearly from the waist down.

shirt // pants // sandals // purse // necklace // T-bar necklace // earrings // sunglasses

It’s easier to achieve those proportions when you do tuck your top into your pants or skirt. Plus, tucking and belting adds a dimension of structure to your outfit that can be pleasing. But during the summer especially it’s perfectly acceptable and often preferable to leave our tops untucked for a more casual look and a little coolness.

In all three of these looks I’ve achieved those desirable 1/3 to 2/3 proportions by wearing slightly cropped length tops. Now these are not your granddaughter’s cropped tops! We’re not showing midriffs here. But these tops all just cover the waistband of my high rise pants. When shopping for these tops, look for shirts that say “cropped.” And disregard the models; they frequently pose or wear their bottoms so that their midriffs do indeed show. But use the measurements provided for the top instead. I measured all three of these tops with a tape measure and all of them are 22″ from shoulder seam to the bottom of the front hemline. So I know that is a good length for me. I suggest you find the ideal length(s) for you and look for that when shopping.

All three of these tops also fit fairly close to my body. They’re not snug. They don’t need to be. But they graze my body so that the eye can easily tell where my waist is. Even though the fit is relaxed in all three outfits, the clothes look like they fit my body. When you wear a long, drapey tunic in an effort to hide your tummy, you look, indeed, like you’re trying to hide something…and honestly it’s not working.

Another Important Detail

If your goal is indeed to draw the focus away from a protruding tummy, resist the urge to wear those blousy tunics. Instead work your magic by wearing a top with interesting details at the neckline and/or an attractive neckline that puts more focus on your face. In all three outfits I’ve worn flattering necklines – a V-neck, a button-up that is unbuttoned partially and a scoop neck. But I’ve also used bold jewelry, a scarf and a detail like gathers and a bow at the neck to draw attention towards my face.

What About the Pants?

During the summer we enjoy wearing shorts, skirts and lightweight pants with our outfits. But I created all three of these looks with cropped or ankle length pants because I hear from my followers that these are what they turn to most frequently during the warm months. Me, too!

shirt // pants // sandals // earrings // necklace // bracelet // sunglasses

Because we do like to wear shorter length pants during the summer, that’s all the more reason to make sure our untucked tops are short enough to just cover the waistband of your pants. If you choose carefully you should still be able to create an appealing look that is proportional and stylish.

Blessed for My Day

You may already be retired for work and living on your retirement funds. Or, like me, you may be stashing away as much as you can right now with retirement approaching fast on the horizon. Either way, the temptation for those of us at a certain age can be to believe that our security is in those funds. Whether we have plenty or barely enough, we may assume that what’s left of our future is dependent upon that money.

Of course it’s smart to save and prepare for the future. But the Bible warns that to put too much stock in those savings is like building a high wall in our imaginations. We can assume that it is our strength and security, but, like that wall, it can crumble. Instead, let’s remember that the best way to prepare for today, tomorrow and the future is to get to know our Lord a little better every day. The more we know Him, the more likely we’ll run to Him in tough times. And that is where we’ll find our safe place and strength.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
A rich man’s wealth is his strong city,
and like a high wall in his imagination. ~ Proverbs 18:10-11

  1. Right up my alley! I never tuck in my tops, not because of trends, but because ever since I can remember, I have had a very sensitive tummy. Any pressure there from a non-elastic waistband or from a belt, from hosiery waistbands, or from extra fabric from a tuck, is uncomfortable. So my whole closet is “untucked”. But yes you are so right, proportions and defining the waist are both very important when clothes are styled this way. 🙂 Thank you for the BFMD reminder.

  2. Cute, casual Summer outfits. Nice BFMD. Know you are enjoying the visit from Abagail and your granddaughter. Precious times.

  3. Enjoy time with family. Great BFMD reminder.
I’m waiting on this same chambray tank to arrive as I ordered it when you first styled it but I can’t find my order email and no update responses yet. Do you know how I can check on this order? Really want the top. 😌

  4. Love this post. Please show us more “untucked” outfits.
Question for you, what size are you wearing in the chambray tank top?
I really like that and think we’d wear the same size.

Enjoy the time with your girls!

Ok, now I’m off to preview the N Sale!

  5. The chambray top was my favorite! It’s nice change from a tee shirt style. I have had great luck buying tops that are identified as cropped. I specifically search for them and they fit just below my waist. I look for tops that look too short on the models and then I know I’ve got one I will like! At 5’2″ you’d think I’d look at petite sizes and have success but the overall fit on a regular size is better for me. Tall models +short tops are a win for me.

  6. I love the chambray top and was thrilled to find it at an affordable price and in plus size. It is in my cart!💜
