We’ve already had very cold weather in Ohio, but winter isn’t quite officially here. Still, I’ve already moved some of my lighter weight fall clothes out to make room for a more winter appropriate wardrobe. So I thought today would be a good day to run through a few of the more wearable winter fashion trends for 2024-2025.

Because the style houses do two runway seasons where they share the new designs, we generally think of trends really breaking onto the scene in spring and fall. But in fact, there are trends that are also unique to winter and summer. We don’t tend to talk about those quite as much, and indeed some of the winter trends are in fact holdovers from the fall. But I do think there are enough uniquely winter trends to spend a little time talking through a few of them.
As in the fall, many of the items that are trending are indeed classics that are just having a moment. So they never really go out of style, but they are more prevalent this year than in some other recent ones. Let’s see what’s popular this winter.
Funnel Neck Tops, Sweaters & Outerwear
Turtlenecks are actually prevalent this winter. But the more unique neckline that seems to be everywhere is the funnel neck. You’ll see those that still fit fairly close to the body, like the one below…

But you’ll also see a lot of truer funnel necks that stand away from the neck some, creating a more interesting visual. And this neckline can be even more flattering on some body types.

Of course, I’m using visuals from favorite retailers for this post. Some are pricey, while others are very reasonably priced. And I’ve collected a pretty wide variety of options to include in our shopping widgets, too. So click through any of the images in the shopping widgets that you’re interested in for more details. You’ll find many things are reduced in price right now.
Barrel Jeans
Barrel jeans (aka, lantern jeans or horseshoe jeans) have been quite polarizing for a couple of years now. But that means they’ve also had time to grow on many of us. And designers have gotten a little smarter with them, too, streamlining the silhouettes a little to make them more appealing and nuanced.

I actually like the barrel jeans. But if this is a pass for you, no need to worry. The straight leg jean is still very on trend and always classic. If you do choose to try a pair of barrel jeans, make sure you choose some that are the right length for you. This is not a pant that you want puddling at the ankles. You lose the silhouette that way, creating somewhat of a mess. But a full length barrel pant or jean can look quite flattering with a bit of heel and just a little bit of ankle (or boot) showing.
Liquid Leather
Leather and faux leather have been popular for some time now. But this year we’re seeing evening silkier, more fluid leather-like fabrics in items like skirts, pants and dresses, as well as jackets.

Faux leather is another fairly safe trend to invest in because it’s always beautiful and rich looking.
Classic American Sportswear – Trousers
I really like to consider the broader trends when we’re talking about trending fashions because they help you to understand the style elements and how to wear them better. Quiet luxury continues to trend, but so does classic American sportswear. And when I say sportswear I don’t mean athletic clothing, but the sportswear of the 1940-50s, made popular by Katherine Hepburn and her contemporaries.

Think classic button-up shirts, crewneck sweaters, pleated and wider leg trousers, loafers and trench coats. Most of us have some of those items in our closets, but the one that we may need to update is the classic trouser. Personally, I’m quite pleased that the fuller leg, classic trouser continues to feel stylish and modern.
All Furry
Like faux leather, faux fur is a texture we just can’t seem to get enough of this year. Again, faux fur has been popular for several years now, but it’s growing in favor even more this winter.

Expect to see faux fur textures of all sorts, plenty of colors to choose from and all different silhouettes. You could go with an animal print, a creamy winter white, chocolate brown, deep winter blue or classic black.

And you can wear you faux fur jackets and coats with practically anything. No need to wait for a special occasion. In fact, pairing your faux fur with denim is so chic.
Capes & Wraps
Another outerwear trend to look forward to this winter…and into spring…is capes. I’m hearing more talk of capes than I’m actually seeing in stores, but they are out there to be found. We’re talking true capes, too, with define shoulders, front closures and arm holes.

But other wraps also continue to trend. So I’ve included wraps and ponchos in our shopping widget, too.

Equestrian Details & Riding Boots
Another general trend we continue to see this winter is the fascination with English countryside. That means equestrian details continue to show up especially on accessories, but also sometimes outerwear.

And we’re also seeing the return of the riding boot. Again, these are classic boots. So they’re never completely out of style. But they look very on trend this year. But we’re not going back to the early 2000s and wearing riding boots over skinny jeans. Instead, I suggest looking for riding boots that are fairly lean and clean, but do have minimal, tasteful equestrian accents, then wearing them with dresses, skirts or thick, pant-like leggings.
Fair Isle Sweaters
There are dozens of other winter trends, of course. But the final one I’ll draw your attention to here is the Fair Isle sweater. This classic sweater seems to be the “jumper” of the year. It’s perfect for the holiday season, but looks festive and fresh and pretty for the rest of the cold season, too.

You’ll see so many Fair Isle cardigans and pullovers this winter. And the sky’s the limit for colors and silhouettes. I’m seeing slim fitting sweaters as well as those that are chunkier and longer. Look for them in alpaca, cashmere, merino wool, cotton and blends.

It’s a good time to add a Fair Isle sweater to your wardrobe because so many are marked down right now as we approach the holidays.

Blessed for My Day
“Do not be afraid, Mary.” Can you even imagine? Surely Mary was afraid. But the angel assured her that she did not need to be because God was gracing her with His favor. Because of God’s favor – or grace – she could fulfill her calling with assurance and peace and even joy.
You, too, can fulfill your calling because you have been graced. Because of Jesus Christ, we can know that God is with us. We never have to walk through anything alone or without resource. Do not be afraid, dear friend. You have found favor with God.
And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” ~ Luke 1:30-33

I love a gorgeous funnel neck and the best I’ve found is the cashmere one from Quince. The neckline is so very flattering and the price is great. They are oversized, so unless that’s your desire, size down.
Great to hear. I didn’t even think to check Quince this time. Shame on me! ☺️
Thanks for the update. I love most of the trends — even faux fur — but am going to pass on barrel jeans. I’m not sure they have staying power, but more than anything, I think they make most women look knock-kneed. One other thing that perplexes is the color of linings. The longer faux fur jacket has a light-colored lining, which is clearly visible behind the jeans. It makes you wonder if the manufacturers got a deal on the lining to use something that clearly doesn’t elevate the look of the garment.
All classic pieces for sure! Funny how it’s all about “faux” fur now. I have 3 genuine fur coats and I wear them proudly. One (full length brown mink like the faux one in the photo that was featured) was my mother’s. When I was a teenager my mother bought my sister and I rabbit fur jackets. I just found one on line that looks almost exactly as I remembered mine. I can’t wait to wear it. I agree about fur coats and jackets really looking so chic with jeans. And if I’m dressed up, there’s nothing more timeless and sophisticated than my full length black mink that I treated myself to on my 32nd birthday more than 30 years ago! I know genuine fur is controversial but I wear mine with no shame! ahaha
Funny about this blog post since I just the other day, made a little capsule wardrobe for the rest of December. Of course I had a fair isle sweater in there, my fur coats and jacket mentioned above, cashmere sweaters, a tartan vest and tartan pants and blue and black jeans. I might throw in my buffalo plaid flannel shirt too. That should do me for the rest of the month as we’re not going to any fancy parties. Have a great Christmas!
Hope you had a fun weekend with your family and especially your 1 year old granddaughter! I chuckled at your comment about the equestrian boots trend and you said we are not wearing them over our skinny jeans. Of course we are! How are you supposed to show off all those trendy and classic buckles and straps? I do wear mine with a dress/shirt sometimes, but usually with jeans tucked into the boot. I have several pairs of skinny jeans for exactly this purpose!! Safe travelling today!
You can certainly enjoy your boots that way. 😊 It’s just that the sources I checked all said that the more modern ways to wear them are the ones I shared. 🙂
I don’t wear my riding boots over skinny jeans either. I just wear cuffed pants with them or skirts/dresses. Never liked skinny jeans on me. I’m glad they’re not on trend anymore.
I had to laugh when I heard what your dad yelled out. So great he knows you and your moms love for Talbots. I miss my dad all the time. He died at 63 yrs old from a fall from a ladder. Now my mom is in memory care at age 86 and slowly loosing her from dementia. Hold onto your dear parents close. You are blessed to still have them around. Loved the BFMD.
I am indeed blessed and we are so grateful to have them in our lives. ☺️
Now I had to laugh out loud, because last saturday I did a little shopping and bought guess what: a lovely mint green faux fur jacket, a turtle neck pullover sweater and a fluid black faux leather skirt that I‘ll be wearing with … yep, riding boots.. The barrel jeans I bought last month., and there are two self-knit fair isle sweaters in my cedar chest. And now I see that I‘m so on trend … Big fun!
Have a safe journey home and a wonderful christmas time! xoxoxo, Ulrike
Hahaha! I love that. Enjoy!
I love beautiful winter clothing – wool, cashmere, tweed, riding boots, cozy sweaters. How I miss them as I now live in sunny SW Florida. However I look forward to January when the resort wear catalogs appear and I can shop again.
I always love a good pair of riding boots, and I do have one snowflake pattern fair isle sweater, but otherwise these trends are passes for me. 🙂
PS I’m Carolyn #8, a different Carolyn than #7, but I also live in a warm climate. 🙂
Hi Kay,
You mentioned wearing thick pants-like leggings with riding boots. Would you be able to recommend where to shop for them? All I have are skinny jeans ☺️
I haven’t worn them in several years, but I always liked these before: https://rstyle.me/+kf2FbNHcbBZW2d_A2SO5Mw Usually Talbots comes out with some about this time of year, too. I haven’t seen any yet, but I do think their corduroy jeggings would also be a nice option: https://rstyle.me/+cK3s2F8H5X_s9-aI_FMNEg
I have some of these pieces except barrel jeans. I don’t like them. The models make them look worse standing like cowboys about to rope a calf. I don’t understand why they stand like that. Who wants to look bow legged! I like fur jackets but I wouldn’t get much wear out of one in Central Texas. I like real leather. My faux leather jackets all peeled within 2 years. One peeled in the back and I didn’t know it. I saw it when I took it off coming from church. It’s funny now but it wasn’t that day. It’s cute what your Dad said about Talbot’s.
It’s interesting how satin skirts are paired with casual sweaters. I don’t think I would wear it, but it’s an interesting look. I really like funnel neck sweaters. They are often a better look than a tight turtleneck.
